Leopard/Tiger Benchmarks DSL connectivity

I just checked my DL/UL speeds using my G5 running Tiger and Leopard on the same hardware and using my MBP as a refererence.
The test was made using dslreports via speakeasy, NY.
This test was made using Verizon DSL:
Tiger:
DL speed: 2854
UL speed: 718
Leopard:
DL speed: 2848
UL speed: 725
This machine (MBP still running the Tige)
DL speed: 2794
UL speed: 715
All units are in kbps.
Within the margin of accuracy, there is no difference between any of these sets of numbers.
Leopard is neither faster nor slower than Tiger as far as the internet speeds are concerned.
These are real documented data, nothing more or less. Just the facts.

Hi
I am internet sharing my macbook air with my imac and it is working really well for internet browsing the only problem is that my mba won't pick up email. It works fine on a wifi access point so I have not changed any settings on the computer. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get mail to come through using and airport shared internet access and if so, how to do it?
I have spent hours searching discussion forums (both for a solution and for how to post a new question!) but can' find any help at all. I will just cut my losses if its not possible.
Thanks so much

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Tiger's Internet Connect App in Leopard and 802.1X

    Hi!
I discovered when I bought my MacBook Pro (in fact it was when I installed Leopard in my iBook) that Leopard doesn't support WPA Enterprise networks using 802.1X. The most common solution for this problem (since Apple decided not to care about "eduroam" users (let's say it's the most used wireless network system in european and australian colleges, included mine) that can't use their college's network under Leopard) is to install Tiger's Internet Connect App. Well, that's what I did. To discover that it can't find any network, and that I can't configure 802.1X, because the icon doesn't appear in the app. Someone can help?

The Internet Connect App from Tiger is no longer used under Leopard. I know it seems odd at first, but it's actually much more intuitive now (perhaps a little too intuitive for those that used prior systems, it took me quite a bit of searching to find the settings). Go into Network Preferences and click on Advanced under Airport. Then click on 802.1X in the top and then in the bottom left click on the plus sign which brings up three options: User Profile, Login Profile, or System Profile. The User Profile is as it says just for that user. The Login Profile goes to the login page so a network user can be verified through RADIUS. The System Profile allows the profile to run throughout the system including at login (so the username and password for the login window doesn't authenticate, it's already built-in and running). I hope this helps.

  • "Could not find PPPoE server" sudden error on DSL connection

I am having a serious issue I can't seem to solve.
I currently have two laptops running:
One PowerBookG4 running Tiger that stays connected to the internet through a regular DSL modem, and shares the signal through wifi to another laptop, a MacBookPro that connects by airport.
I have had this configuration for two years and never had any problems.
Recently my network service had a shutdown and came back up in a few hours. Ever since then - without ever changing any configurations - the PowerBook continuously gives me the error "Could not find PPPoE server".
But it is not a network problem because when I plug the cable into the MacBook Pro - that has the EXACT same network configurations as the PowerBook - it connects just fine.
My internet provider explained that it could be a configuration problem caused randomly and that I need to fix it, but I have no idea how to do it. Already scanned the disk, repaired permissions, everything seems fine.
My PPPoE username and password are correct.
Will I have to reinstall the system? Any help would be very very appreciated.

Hi Fernanda , and a warm welcome to the forums!
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON. So drag Ethernet up there on the PB if it isn't.
I don't think it'll require a reinstall, first let's drag these files to the Desktop, reboot, and setup everything again...

  • AEBS causing earthlink Zyxel modem to loose DSL connection

I hooked up my new AEBS n two weeks ago and I am having problems keeping connected to the internet. DLS and Internet light go off on Zyxel P-600 modem randomly. When I connect to the internet, via ethernet, no problems. I used to have a airport express hooked up to the modem and had no problems with dropping the DSL connection. Earthlink seem to think the AEBSn is causing the problem. Can you help?

    Hello again fleabee,
So sorry it's taken me so long to get back here and update my last post. I wanted to wait a few weeks to see if my new configuration with the Netopia router would really make a difference, and then I just got really busy.
Anyway, I'm happy to report that my wireless connection is MUCH more stable since switching away from the Zyxel to the Netopia. It is also important that you configure your Airport Express (or did you say you have the Extreme?) to be a 'bridge' letting your modem/router be the primary 'traffic director', if you will. Otherwise the two devices--your AE and the modem--will fight each other. I can try and retrace my steps on how to do this, or I'd suggest going to the genius bar at any Apple store if you no longer have AppleCare phone support. Please let me know if you need me to retrace.
To get a new Netopia modem from Earthlink, you can simply call as I did and request it saying your Zyxel isn't cutting it any more for you or that it died, whatever. They should upgrade you for free as they did me.
Oh, I also had to play around for a while to find a better location in my apt. for the AE. There are a LOT of wireless devices in my neighborhood apparently competing for the same airspace and that was also causing my wireless connection to suffer.
Lastly, if you can afford to upgrade to Leopard, I highly recommend you do so. Leopard along with Apple's first patch 10.5.1 really have helped with stability of everything. Hope all this helps. Good Luck!

    Hi ,
Have you got any additional public IP Address from your service provider , If yes on router you can have static route for those additional IP Address pointing to your ASA  outside interface .
    Accordingly you can configure NAT

So it means I can't connect to my HP Airprint/Wireless printer without exretnal connection through ISP?? Just need to print from my Mac and iphone. I have Vodafone Prepaid connection, which is directly connected to my Mac. Does that make an internal network possible?

You have to set up the Air Port with an internet connection to set up a network. Do you have a modem? If yes you can set up the network.

  • Safari 6 stalling DSL connection

Here I am with the exact same issue Safari 5 had when it was released.
I installed Safari 6 on my MacBook Pro whilst waiting for my Mountain Lion to download. I like the new changes and the page rendering seems to be super fast. But it keeps stalling my DSL connection. I know it's not an Airport problem, and it's not my MBP (other devices on the network are unable to load pages once the connection has stalled); which leaves just the modem and connection. Connection is fine when I'm using Chrome.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion, the issue was still present. So i backed up and did a clean install of Mountain Lion and still no joy.
Advice, suggestions, and resolutions very much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Yeah I am having the same issue - befor and after ML. Following on from the same issue, online documents ie. google spreadsheets become un-clickable, youtube videos do not stream smoothly...

  • Connecting 2 RV042 to different subnet and DSL connections

Small office, 2 RV042, 2 DSL connections. 1 is used striclty for the business side, and the other is for our CCTV network. They also have seperate DSL connections as we have 2 external IP address for clients to connect remotely. We don't want to take away our exisring setup, but would like to bridge both networks so a few of our internal clients can connect to our CCTV network and use some of the devices. Right now they come in on VPN but its not as fast.
Is this doable without adding additional hardware? Both networks need DHCP enable as well.
    Breakdown:
    DSL 1
    |
    RV042
    |
    192.168.20.X
    |
    | Would like to somehow join the 2 networks together.
    |
    DSL 2
    |
    RV042
    |
    192.168.40.X

Hi Matt, you may utilize 1 RV042 router and host the dual wan for each connection then bind the appropriate services to the WAN. You then may enable the multiple subnet feature on the router to allow both separate LAN IP network communication through the LAN.
Next you can make very specific firewall rules for the specific services.
The caveat of this router firewall is that it has a default state table. To bypass the default state table you will need to make such a deny all rule for every field.
Then make a service rule to permit source ip to destination IP using which WAN for what service. (Confusing isn't it?)
Reference this topic to get an idea what I'm talking about.

  • Flaky DSL connection

I have a DSL connection through Verizon that requires a username and password to get connected and once connected is always on. Now when I set this up with the DSL Modem/Router(it is a full router with all capabilites for networking like Linksys or Airport but a generic Westell verison) I inputted my username and password to log into the DSL Network. It has some firmware on it that requires the username and password be inputted into the router for the internet to connect properly. In the connection properties of the router it has DSL connection "connected/not connected" and Internet connection "connected/not connected". Also on my AEBS I have inputted my username and password for the DSL connection also.
    It is working like this:
My DSL Modem/Router connects to the internet using my username and password. DHCP is disabled and wireless is also disabled. So it is acting like a bridge to just supply the internet connection. My AEBS is setup with the same username and password setup under PPOE over Ethernet. It has DHCP enabled with NAT and also my wireless network setup.
The question is since I have my username and password for the DSL incorporated into both Routers could that cause a problem with my connection? I am seeing connection drops and drops in bandwidth also. It will go anywhere from 50 KB to 160 KB and flux in between. I want to make sure before I go after Verizon for bad service. If its my fault I want to know before I accuse them of bad connections.
I was thinking of either setting up the DSL Router w/ my username and password and setting AEBS to just Ethernet and let it do everything else or take my username and password out of the DSL Router and just let my Aitport make the connection. Which would be best. Thanks in advance.
iMac G5 2.0 Ghz 1 Gig RAM, AP & BT, 400 Gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iBook G3 700 Mhz 640 MB RAM Airpot

If i enable DHCP on the westell router it will give my AEBS a DHCP address and it will not function properly. I tried going through and disabling DHCP on my AEBS but it said to use PPoE you should leave DHCP enabled. Now if i remove the PPoE status on my AEBS and enable just Ethernet nothing goes throuh from that point on. It gets the IP from my router but then nothing functions. I was trying to figure out a way to let the westell be a gateway and make my PPoE connection for me and then once it hits the airport for it to distrubute IPs and do my wireless. The westell routr is generic and doesn't have many options. it came with my DSL setup package.
Now i did notice on the router it does have a routing table. Is it possible to setup a routing table to go straight to my AEBS and let it take it from there?
This is getting complicated now. I do tech support for networks for my day job and I have nevr seen anything this difficult to get working right. I think i might just call Verizon and try to get a dsl modem w/o a router and let my airport handle everything.

  • DSL connection gets slower than dial up at night

For the last week my DSL connection has been getting really slow in the late afternoon and evening. It is fine in the morning. Also in the evening I have started getting error messages such as Request Timeout, The connection was reset while the page was loading, and Can't find DNS server. Verizon has tried to blame my laptop, but the same thing happens with my two desktops and my wife's desktop. Verizon has also tried to blame my Belkin router, which I took out of the equation by hooking the DSL modem directly to my laptop. The modem is a Westell 6100G.
Could there be too much traffic through the CO in the afternoon and evening that is affecting my connection?

NDT Test is not showing packet loss yet the line sounds like it's behaving like there is a ton of loss occurring. I'll see if I can get someone. It's hard to say how Verizon has things set up but if 1Mbps is the top speed in your area and the sync rate was set that low deliberately rather than by some sort of provisioning accident, I wonder if your DSLAM is fed by bonded T1 lines. Not too uncommon to find that still to this day where DSLAMs are not fed by Fiber especially in very rural areas.

  • Flashing amber with DSL connection

I have a flashing amber on Airport Extreme.  I have DSL connection to the internet via Cat5e cable through the Airport, but no wireless signature and cannot find it with the AirPort Utility scan.

Plug the computer in by ethernet to the do the setup..
Is the DSL modem router?? then the AE should be in bridge mode.
You can then setup AE to create a wireless network.. and give it a suitable name.. remember in the Windows world names should be short,, 2-20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

  • Multiple WLANs & DSL connection

Has anyone had any experience with configuring multiple WLANs feeding into a single DSL connection?
I need to set up WLANs in 4 separate rooms that each have single cable back to a switch and a DSL connection.
The idea is that each room will be stand-alone as far as the WLAN is concerned and when they need Internet access they plug into the Ethernet port in the wall which is cabled back to the switch and DSL.
Each room will have a 4-port wireless router with DHCP server configured (the 4-ports are for those without wireless). Initially security won't be an issue but we realise that VLANs will probably be required down the track and a managed level-2 or 3 switch will be required. For now we are happy to just use separate wireless routers with minimum security.
I am assuming something like a WRT54G will do the job but how to configure the WLANs? Different SSIDs and channels? Could we use different networks (eg 192.168.1.x and 10.0.0.x) and then would we need to bridge them etc?
    K

Hi .. you can definitely configure the routers in the way you have described. You will have to set up different ssid and channel on each router in each room. Also you have to use different networks.Say eg 192.168.1.1 on the 1st router and 192.168.2.1 on the 2nd router and so on.

  • Unable to configure PPPoE in Cisco 877 for DSL connectivity

    Hi,
I am trying to setup a DSL connection with Cisco 877 as the CPE. The CLI does not list the option of PPPoE for protocol in the vpdn group config prompt. If i manually enter PPPoE as the encapsulation, the vpdn group configured vanishes from the config!
Any clues? Has anyone got a sample config for a cisco 877 connecting to DSL through PPPoE. I followed the sample config in the TAC website giving the example for cisco 827-pppoe -DSL.
Some more inputs - as soon as i connect the DSL line the ATM interface line protocol comes up but unable to see anything in debug vpdn or debug ppp auth. The router IOS feature set is Advanced Security services.

  • DSL Connection Very slow ONLY when using wireless router

My DSL connection was running super slow (approx 136 Kbs) - I disconnected the Linksys wireless router and plugged by DSL modem directly into the computer.  Then my internet speed increased to 1.4 Mbs (a 10 fold increase).
Any suggestions on how / why my speed drops so extensively when using the Linksys wireless routher (wrt45g).
    Thanks

Are you using the same test each time to measure the speed?
The reason I ask is that Windows usually reports its download speed in KB/sec (Kilobytes per second).  But most web (internet) speed tests report their speed in Mbps (Megabits per second.)
A 1.4 Mbps line will typically pass data at about 140KB/sec.
To help determine what kind of problem you are having, do the same speed test in 3 different ways:
    1)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    3)  Connect one computer, wirelessly, to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
Report back your results, and also, please state what line speed you are paying for.  Once we have this, we will hopefully be able to help you.
