  • Share iTunes Library between Leopard & Tiger?

I have 2 internal HDs in my Quad G5. One boots Tiger, the other boots Leopard. Because of its very large size, I moved my iTunes music (and videos) from Tiger to an external HD, following the standard procedure for moving ones library. All works fine in Tiger.
However, because Leopard will allow me to use the new Front Row (I have a G5 Quad), I would like to access my music and movies when I boot into Leopard. In Leopard's iTunes Preferences, I have tried changing the iTunes Music Folder Location to the external hard drive, but Front Row continues to show the original iTunes contents (the one in Leopard's iTunes).
Is what I am trying to do possible, or can't the iTunes Library on an external HD be accessed from two OS's on separate drives in one machine? Thanks.

Just for your info, Vista ***** whatever you try to do. I'm stuck with Vista on a pre-installed laptop. All experience I have from Vista is bad, don't buy Vista or a computer with preinstalled Vista if you can avoid it.
We have three computers in a home network, one Macbook Pro, one PC with Windows XP, and the Vista laptop. All are using iTunes-8, downloaded and installed last week.
Sharing iTunes libraries using the option to share libraries on a local network works fine between Mac and Windows-XP. The sharing also works fine between the XP and the Vista PC.
But the Vista PC can't access the Mac iTunes library. When trying to open the Mac library, iTunes on the Vista computer says something like "Fetching library info from...". It's the same problem when trying to access the Vista library from the Mac.
We had a similar problem when trying to access shared folders on the local network. Thanks to a tip on this forum how to tweak the Vista registry, the shared folder problem was solved.
I'm think some registry setting in Vista might solve iTunes shared library problems. Maybe some Windows freak knows how to patch the registry to solve this issue.
Otherwise the solution is to trash Vista, and install Windows-XP.

  • Install Leopard & Tiger on different Mac.

I just purchased Macbook (Leopard). Usually when we purchase a Mac computer, the OS will include. Can I Install Leopard on my old Mac computer (MacBook Pro-Santa), and Tiger on my new Macbook? I just purchased Macbook (Leopard). Usually when we purchase a Mac computer, the OS will include. Can I Install Leopard on my old Mac computer (MacBook Pro-Santa), and Tiger on my new Macbook? I need some opinion. Thanks. Sorry for my English.

To expand a bit on Niel's answer, you cannot instal an OS on any machine that is older than the machine itself. If your machine comes with Leopard, you can't put Tiger on it, and the Leopard install discs that come with your new MacBook are machine specific and won't work with your old machine.

  • Library sharing - Leopard/Tiger

I'm running Leopard on a Mini and Tiger on a G5. I've got library sharing turned on, but the Leopard/Mini doesn't see the library on the G5. The iTunes on the G5 is version 7.1.1. On the Leopard/Mini it is, I believe 7.2.5.
Any idea what the problem is?

    Hi,
I don't that is completely true. I can share the Library on the iPhoto '08 with iPhoto '06 on Tiger. So on the MacMini running Tiger/iPhoto '06 I'm able to browse the iPhoto library of the MacBook Pro running Leopard/iPhoto '08. Unfortunately, the is reverse of what I wanted to achieve.
It also surprised me a bit that this works if the libraries are different because it suggests that '06 is forward compatible with '08. I would have expected it to be the other way around ('08 being backwards compatible with shared libraries of '06).

  • Freezing in Leopard, Tiger and Panther

Hi, I'm pretty new to Macs, so excuse any of my possible ignorance. I searched in the forum, but could not find any topic specifically answering my question.
I have an old eMac (1.25 ghz, 768 mb ram) I purchased from a friend. Upon my first plug in, I decided to upgrade to Leopard 10.5.4 (He was running a previous version of Tiger). After installing it, I found that it kept freezing after start up. At first I thought that it was related to running too much stuff at once, until it crashed on the desktop with no applications running. This freezing occurs anywhere from a minute to almost an hour *if I'm lucky* after startup.
Anyway, I decided that maybe I should run a clean install on Leopard. After all, I didn't really care about any of the stuff on my friend's hard drive. But no. That didn't solve anything. I then proceeded to go to my disk utility and repair the disk and the permissions. THAT didn't solve it, either.
Finally I figured, "OK, maybe my version of Leopard is just corrupt". I did a clean install and reverted to Tiger. For about five minutes, I was happy...until it froze once again. So then I was like, "Screw it, I'll just try Panther". Nope. It seemed to freeze more and more the more I downgraded.
I'm using Leopard once again for a bit, simply because it seems to freeze the least there. I know this is the Tiger forum, but can anyone here help me with my problem? Please?!

    Hello,
I have been having some freezing issues the past few weeks on my G5 tower. It happened after the last major update, even had a few kernel panics. I searched around the forums here and found the easiest fix for me which was running AppleJack http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/07/beijing2008_preparationsthre.html
If you follow the instructions very closely you might get some relief. I ran it yesterday afternoon and so far, (keeping fingers crossed) no problems.
I know we have differing equipment, but AppleJack will work with many Mac OS X versions.
You have to completely shut down, then roboot holding down the 'command' and 's' keys after the first chime upon boot. When screen is up, then type in 'applejack auto restart' - it starts to clean up your system and checks and repairs disks. (will automatically restart computer after fixing all) Best to read all the directions before trying.
Good luck. Let us know if it works.
    ps, i'm running Tiger, 10.4.11

  • Safari 3: Leopard / Tiger rendering differences

I am noticing subtle rendering differences in Safari 3 between Tiger and Leopard, is anyone else experiencing this? It appears to be related to box size calculation, as it seems to cause selected elements in one browser to not recognize certain margin values via css.

    OS Lucinity wrote:
Another thing about Safari 3 on Leopard, is that I cannot grab downloaded files from the Downloads list, to drag them to the desktop (or wherever) like I was able to in Safari 2, and Safari 3 Tiger.
I'm not able to do that in the Safari 3 beta in Tiger. (I just double-checked that.) As far as I know, I've never been able to drag files from the Downloads window in Safari. Perhaps you had a Safari hack installed that enabled that ability?
What I can do is click the magnifying glass next to a file in the Downloads window, which reveals that file in the Finder.

  • Leopard/Tiger Sharing Problem?

This is kind of hard to describe...
    1. I'm on Mac A (running 10.5.3) attempting to connect to Mac B (running 10.4.10).
    2. I select Mac B in the sidebar of a Finder window on Mac A. Status says "Connecting..."
    3. When it is done, it says "Connected as: Guest" with "Mac A's Public Folder" listed. Note: This is the Mac I'm trying to connect from, not the remote Mac B.
    4. If I click "Connect As..." the dialog says, "Enter your user name and password to access file server "Mac A". Again note that this is my local Mac, the one I am trying to connect from.
It seems impossible to connect to Mac B. Same thing happens if I try to connect to Mac B from Mac C (running 10.5.3). Mac A and Mac C have been running Leopard for a while, but this only started happening recently (maybe with the upgrade to 10.5.3).
I don't know if it matters, but all three Macs are on the same local network. Mac A is connected via Ethernet, Macs B and C are connected via Airport.
I have found a workaround: If I turn off file sharing on Mac A (or Mac C), then I can connect to Mac B properly.
Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix it?

The Tiger's address changes from time to time but I adjust for this by changing the IP address I use under Finder->Go->Connect to Server on the Leopard machine. The first three numbers of the IP addresses of the two machine are identical - "192".
    Thanks.

  • Leopard/Tiger Benchmarks DSL connectivity

I just checked my DL/UL speeds using my G5 running Tiger and Leopard on the same hardware and using my MBP as a refererence.
The test was made using dslreports via speakeasy, NY.
This test was made using Verizon DSL:
    Tiger:
    DL speed: 2854
    UL speed: 718
    Leopard:
    DL speed: 2848
    UL speed: 725
This machine (MBP still running the Tige)
    DL speed: 2794
    UL speed: 715
    All units are in kbps.
Within the margin of accuracy, there is no difference between any of these sets of numbers.
Leopard is neither faster nor slower than Tiger as far as the internet speeds are concerned.
These are real documented data, nothing more or less. Just the facts.

    Hi
I am internet sharing my macbook air with my imac and it is working really well for internet browsing the only problem is that my mba won't pick up email. It works fine on a wifi access point so I have not changed any settings on the computer. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get mail to come through using and airport shared internet access and if so, how to do it?
I have spent hours searching discussion forums (both for a solution and for how to post a new question!) but can' find any help at all. I will just cut my losses if its not possible.
    Thanks so much

  • Running Snow Leopard & Tiger on same Mac unit

How can I install both Tiger AND Snow Leopard on the same Intel Mac, and have the choice to choose either OS at start up to work with?

You would have to partition your hard drive into at least 2 partitions, then install Tiger on one partition and Snow Leopard on the other. When you boot you will have to hold down the Option key to have your Mac allow you to choose which partition to boot from.
Alternatively, you could install the second OS version on an external FW drive. But the drive would have to be connected & powered on before you start up your Mac in order to be able to choose it for startup.
Note: You should not, and in most cases cannot, install an earlier version of OS X than what came with your Mac. So, if your Intel Mac came with Leopard or Snow Leopard on it, you probably won't be able to install Tiger on it.
Why do you want to do this?

  • Leopard Tiger Upgrade on G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore-Shuts down on install reboot

G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore (upgraded from Dual 450)
    1.25 GB RAM
    130GB HD
    SuperDrive
    Radeon 7500 32MB
    Apple 17" Studio LCD
I've replaced my G4 DP 450MHz with a Sonnet Encore 1GHz upgrade, so I could successfully install and run Leopard. I'm using the upgrade DVD that camee with my iMac Core2.
The G4 has Tiger 10.4.11 installed and ran much faster after I upgraded the Encore 1GHz processor.
Leopard upgrade successfully installs. It reboots and I get the gray screen w/ Apple logo and loader circle animation.
Then the machine shuts itself down- turns completely off! Every time... I've even reinstalled the upgrade and it still happens.
This is also exactly what happened when I used LeopardAssist on the Dual 450 Processor, and a major reason why I bought the 1GHz processor upgrade.
"CPU Accelerator" was used on the G4 but I disabled it from startup before installing the upgrade. Also used in Tiger was "RapidoStart", which I didn't disable from startup items. Could that be whats shutting the machine down on Start Up?

As I recall, Leopard checks the original processor speed. If the sonnet upgrade is not specifically marked Leopard Compatible, it probably won't work.
You might attempt to install Leopard from another PPC that meets the requirements, via the FW target disk mode, as others have done. Whether Leopard will actually run is something else.

  • FCS 2 Leopard/Tiger project Compatibility

    Howdy Gang
I'm in the Television business and work with FCS 2 at work as well as at home. Recently I upgraded my home machine (intel iMac core duo) to leopard. Since the upgrade I've been having project compatibility problems. When I get home with a project I created at work, I get a message saying that the project is from an older version of FCS, and if I continue without Saving As, I'll not be able to open the project back up on the Tiger machine at work. I'm running updated versions of FCS 2 on both machines, but one is leopard and one is Tiger. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If any more info would help just let me know.

I have the same problem. Work OS is Tiger 10.4.11, home machine is Leopard 10.5.x (not in front of it) and both have FCS2 installed on them. The versions are the same, I just did the updates, and yet I'm still finding that the Tiger version of FCP can't read the Leopard files. I haven't tried the reverse, yet, but I'm headed home to grab some stuff and will do so there.

  • Networking Leopard & Tiger

I have a Mac Pro running Leopard and an eMac running Tiger and I'm trying to enable screen/file sharing and everything. With everything enabled in system prefs>sharing on both computers, I see in the finder of the mac pro under shared- the eMac, the administrator/eMac username, and the name of my airport extreme. However when I click 'connect as' or 'screen share' on the eMac or eMac username, I enter my name and password it keeps saying they are wrong. Obviously I'm not playing w/ a full deck but I don't know which cards are missing (my first network don't ya know)
    Any help out there?

To login to a leopard mac via screen sharing from Tiger wont work unless you first of all enable in the 'computer settings' 'VNC viewers may control screen with password' enable a password.
Then you can control it with a vnc client I would recommend either chicken of the vnc or jollysfast vnc.
Now back to file sharing. When you click to connect to the Leopard mac from your tiger mac you login with the user creditals you use for the account you hold on the leopard mac.
likewise the other way round you use the user credentials of the tiger account.

  • Usage of Leopard, Tiger and olders versions

    Hello,
For my study I'm searching for information of the usage of Leopard and older version of MAC OSX. Has anyone an idea?
I can't find anything usefull on google
    Regards,

First that article was written a few years ago. The prices of external drives has dropped much since then.
The flaw in what the article purports is that when the internal drive crashes, usually everything is lost. Even a corrupt boot sector or partition table or even a bad install can turn the drive into a boat anchor. And backing it up would require a separate backup for each OS and each partition.
It might sound convenient, and it is, until the HD fails and then it's a disaster.
I have Tiger on an external drive which is very small and if I wish, I can take it with me. It also serves as storage for other data and for TM.
The general rule of not putting all your eggs in one basket certainly applies here.
What you plan will probably work, but it is not something I would ever recommend or do myself.
On my PCs, I used to partition my drive so I could run Windows and Linux. I had multiple partitions for the several parts of Linux that can exist in their own partitions. When harddrives became inexpensive I installed a second drive for Linux and unpartitioned my original drive for Windows only. It's not only simpler, it's much safer.
This is only my recommendation, and nothing else. Maybe we all have to do things like this once. Just be careful and remember you must be very careful not to ever crash any of the partitions.

  • Leopard, Tiger or Panther on a 667MHz, 1GB PowerBook G4

Firstly, heres my situation. I am a 17 year old student who just needs a fast reliable laptop which I can take around and do work on. I currently have Tiger installed and it runs fairly slowly, I am wondering if reinstalling it will solve my problem.
I have access to all OSX's and can borrow a external DVD drive to install them with. I am wondering which would be the most useful for my situation. Also, just wondering if Panther comes on a CD, so I don't have to borrow the external DVD Drive.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each OSX. I realize Panther is the oldest and will probably run the fastest on this system, but I heard that Tiger was a great upgrade and still maintained the performance of Panther. And Leopard being the newest will probably be too much for my poor little PowerBook to handle, but will it run at all?
Also, how hard is it to get my hands on a processor upgrade for this? I wouldn't mind an upgrade to 1.5GHz or something similar. And how much would it cost?
    Thanks in advance, Nick.

Hi, Ronin. Your Powerbook doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for Leopard, and although you can install it anyway, it would run slowly and monopolize much more of your limited RAM than Tiger or Panther. I still run Panther on my Tibook because Tiger offered exactly nothing that I found even vaguely interesting, never mind essential. The only thing that will get me to upgrade again on this machine is some killer app (or killer new version of an app I already have) that requires Tiger. I won't upgrade to Leopard until my next new Mac, and even then I'll have to keep this machine to run Classic on: I have a couple of old apps I couldn't live without and can't upgrade. So I suggest either installing Panther or reinstalling Tiger, after wiping your hard drive clean.
No processor upgrades are available for your model.

  • ICal won't sync between Leopard & Tiger computers

So, I'm loving Leopard on my Intel iMac and iBook, however the work cpu is still on Tiger for technical reasons.
Problem: My iCal on the home computers doesn't sync with my work machine..... Am I doing something wrong (do I need to reset something), or is this a 'known' issue?
I appreciate any info... (i'm having a tough time syncing my home/personal calendars! :))

I found the solution last night -- and it involved resetting the sync data. I thought that I had already done this by resetting the sync data in the iSync application, but that was the wrong place.
    Here's what you should do:
First decide which computer has your "master" calendar. For me that was the one with 10.4.11 on it, as I could get my 10.5.1 calendar events onto the 10.4.11 computer, but not vice-versa.
Second, from the "master" computer, open up the .Mac preference pane, click on the "Advanced" tab, and then click "Reset Sync Data."
When given the option, make sure that you use the data on your computer to replace the data on .Mac.
Third, go to the 10.5.1 computer, and do the same thing (note that the .Mac pref pane is organized a bit differently).
This time, make the sync direction go the other way -- from .Mac back to your 10.5.1 computer.
Note that after clicking the "resent sync data" button, you are offered an option to limit things to just the calendars (excluding things like contacts, keychains, etc.). I recommend doing that.
Note also that you might want to export the database from iCal (and/or Address Book) before doing this -- you can do that from the "File" menu in both apps -- it's just a good back-up strategy in case disaster strikes.
That's it -- for me, everything synced properly between computers after doing these things.
Note that there is an Apple Support Document I also found on this topic that spurred me to try this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301378
    Good luck,
    -Barry
