Leopard, Tiger, Panther, Calico, Alleycat - what are the numbers?

I'm getting so frustrated by references to these made up names when all I want is to understand something in a specific OS.
"About This Mac" talks in Version numbers.
Everywhere else the references are to cat names.
I got a G4 running OS 10.3.9
And I got a Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11
How about making this consistent and simple?

This is why the gods invented google. It is perfectly consistent and simple.
Just look at your install CD or DVD or your manual.
I won't get into G4, G5, MBP, Santa Rosa, Aluminum, etc.
Then there is quartz, cocoa, coffee, Aqua and on and on.
A simple google turns up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOSX
That's a good start.
But just remember your best friend is google for stuff like this.
It's not frustrating at all, in fact it's fun, like car models and airplane types.
Enjoy

  • What are the numbers preceding some posted questions

I tried to seach for this, but nothing came up. What are the numbers I see before some posted questions.

Is there a link to the Support Community from the KB article that automatically puts the KB number in the new discussion. I couldn't find one.
Or does the person creating the discussion manually put the article number in the topic.
I now know what the number is, I just don't understand how it gets in the new discussion topic.

  • What are the numbers next to the "Building edges from DisplayObject"?

    Dear colleagues,
Could you help me to understand what are the numbers next to the “Building edges from DisplayObject”, please?

this is test on iOS iPad 1 -- animation of dragon
Thank you in advance for help,
    Vlad

The number "x 3" means that "Building edges from DisplayObjects" happened 3 times. The time shown next to it is the total time for all three of these activities. The same is true for "Calculating dirty regions x 2" - it means that it happened twice. You shouldn't worry too much about the number of activities though, just the total time for them - e.g. if Flash Player didn't have anything to do, it might finish an activity almost immediately, and this would show up in Scout with a negligible time (e.g. a few microseconds) - that's not something you should worry about.
If you want to understand the display list rendering operations better, you can read the article here:

The 3D applications others have mentioned cost hundreds of dollars, so unless you are very keen or well-heeled, they won't be much use.
I can't help you with your effects as they sound rather complex.
When I do something I try to be open-minded as it often makes life incredibly easier. I have an effect in mind but if it proves too difficult I swop it for something similar but a lot simpler.
Often the alternative effect can end up looking better than my first idea!
Frequently the only people we satisfy with complex effects are ourselves ....... other audiences barely notice them.
Yes, those are too expensive, some cost more than FCE itself. I will try to alter the animation.

  • What are the numbers before some Apple Forums?

For example, before the title of a questions on Apple Support Communities, I see numbers such as HTS312 and TS4054. What do these numbers mean?

That is the code number of the Apple article from where the poster of the question first went in research of their problem and started the thread at the bottom of the page with "Start a Discussion".
Just go to one of those discussions and you'll see at the top where it originated and you can click on the link.

  • What are the numbers next to individual emails? e.g. 2,3

When checking emails some emails have a number listed next to them. When I click on the email it only shows one attachment or one email. I have a few emails that have either a 2 or 3 next to them.

The numbers indicate that there is a thread of emails that relate to the message.

  • What are the numbers on top of fields?

    Hi,
One of our users has the following when opening forms. The fields all have a number hovering over the top left of them. This both hides the value in the cases of check and radio boxes, and shortly after, the whole program crashes.
The form opens and works correctly elsewhere, and on the same PC as another user.
Any idea whether this is a user setting somewhere or how else to fix?
    Thanks

    Thanks,
    Any idea how to turn these off? I can see some other people have had the same issue but no real solution yet;

What are the steps I need to take to upgrade my Macbook with Tiger to Lion and the cloud?  I have the install disk for Snow Leopard.

Hi Carol, good/sound advice by Ziatron so far.
We need more info about your Mac to see if it will even be capable,
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 6 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.21f4
You'll need to buy SL/10.6 first & get it to 10.6.8, then get Lion... if you can run it.
Or if you can erase your disk...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
It looks like Apple will have Lion available on USB drives for $69...

  • What are the must have apps for Snow Leopard

Just downgraded from Mavericks to Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Just can't stand the frequent beach balls. Was wondering what are the must have apps that are still being updated by the developers?

Most of the apps that comes with OSX 10.6 are not being updated anymore. It would be great if you could recommend apps that are still being updated for security, stability etc for the following:
    1. Email
    2. Browsing
    3. Office Suite (like iWork)
    4. To do List
    5. Photo Editor
    6. P2P / File Sharing
I am aware that there are reviews in the net for best apps, but I am interested to learn what people in this community have used personally and suggest.
    Cheers

  • I'm thinking of upgrading from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this? What are the implications / consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware?

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. I know, I'm years behind, but it has become a necessity. My Mac is becoming slow and is incompatible with many softwares and websites. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this upgrade? What are the implications and/or consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware? Are there any precautions I should take before the installation? I have read some posts about Macs slowing right down after installing Yosemite. Any insights and information (in layman's terms please!) would be very useful. Thanks.

Huge thanks for your response Michel. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I have done as you suggested, the details are pasted below. Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.
    Problem description:
I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. Over the last week my Mac has Safe Booted on three occasions, so clearly there’s a ‘glitch’ occurring.

  • What Are The Correct Gray OS X Discs For This Imac?

I got a free 700Mhz G4, 15" Screen, 512mb Ram, 40GB HDD and I was wondering what are the correct OS X discs (Gray) that came with this Mac?
There has to be a serial or model number right? I have Leopard installed on it and I missing having the DVD player so could I connect the iMac to my PowerMac G5 using Target Disc Mode, and then install Panther or Tiger onto the iMac through it?

    Liquidus wrote:

The correct Mac OS restore discs are Mac OS X 10.1.2 and Mac OS 9.2.2. I have restore discs for a 600MHz Late 2001 iMac G3, which has the same identical software as the iMac G4. That part number for the disc set is 603-0372.
For the second part of your question, you can install Panther or Tiger through Target Disc Mode from your PM G5.

That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

  • What are the best practices to extend the overall lifespan of my MacBook Pro and its battery?

In general what are the recomended practices to extend the lifespan of my batter and other general practice to extend the lifespan and characteristics(such as performance and speed) like new on my MacBook Pro which this past fall (2011)?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
