Leopard Tiger Upgrade on G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore-Shuts down on install reboot

G4 1GHz Sonnet Encore (upgraded from Dual 450)
1.25 GB RAM
130GB HD
SuperDrive
Radeon 7500 32MB
Apple 17" Studio LCD
I've replaced my G4 DP 450MHz with a Sonnet Encore 1GHz upgrade, so I could successfully install and run Leopard. I'm using the upgrade DVD that camee with my iMac Core2.
The G4 has Tiger 10.4.11 installed and ran much faster after I upgraded the Encore 1GHz processor.
Leopard upgrade successfully installs. It reboots and I get the gray screen w/ Apple logo and loader circle animation.
Then the machine shuts itself down- turns completely off! Every time... I've even reinstalled the upgrade and it still happens.
This is also exactly what happened when I used LeopardAssist on the Dual 450 Processor, and a major reason why I bought the 1GHz processor upgrade.
"CPU Accelerator" was used on the G4 but I disabled it from startup before installing the upgrade. Also used in Tiger was "RapidoStart", which I didn't disable from startup items. Could that be whats shutting the machine down on Start Up?

As I recall, Leopard checks the original processor speed. If the sonnet upgrade is not specifically marked Leopard Compatible, it probably won't work.
You might attempt to install Leopard from another PPC that meets the requirements, via the FW target disk mode, as others have done. Whether Leopard will actually run is something else.

Hey, constantly since I installed the iOS 7.1 upgrade, my iPhone has been constantly shutting down and I think it's really frustrating and I whant to know how I can stop my iPhone from shutting down so I can downgrade to iOS 7.0.4?

7.1.1 is certainly compatible with the iPhone 4. Just try a reset first.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Scary issue with FCP shutting down after installing leopard????

I use a lacie external hard-drive 400gb and FCP HD. I recently installed leopard 10.5.5
My issue- when I try to open a project from the external hard drive after 38% it shuts down FCP. What is my prob here? I know that I also ran a update for FCP since reconnecting my apple to the internet.
I was so hoping that the installation of leopard would go smooth...not sure if it's the culprit though.
keep in mind everything worked fine before. I have installed a few widgets, apps, and downloaded a few updates and other software....nothing special

If by FCP HD you mean FCP 4.5 ... it is not supported under Leopard (aka OSX 10.5)
Time to upgrade your editing software to match the OS.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite keeps shutting down on its own

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite about a month ago, I have a macbook pro 2010, and in the last two weeks it started shutting down on its own. At first when i'd wake it, the fan would come on loudly and then it would shut down. In the last couple of days, I would make sure all programs were shut when it wasn't in use and then put it to sleep but every time i'd return it would be shut down and need a hard restart. If i just pressed the on button lightly it wouldn't start. And when i turn it on the fan comes on immediately. I'm a publisher so I'm working in indesign and illustrator a lot but I keep a constant look out for my memory and this isn't the problem. I'm working to a deadline here and can't afford to lose my computer for 3 days in the mac store (I live in Barbados) to get it fixed. Any advise?
    Thanks

  • PowerBook G4 will not shut down after installing Leopard

Hi - has anyone found shut down problems (or restart for that matter) after installing Leopard. I've got 30Gb of hard drive free on a Powerbook G4 (3 years old).

    No I don't.
Looking around for answers to this one it seems it is a fairly common problem with new Leopard users. One solution (apparently from Apple) was to delete the cache folders in both the user's home folder and in the top-level system folder. I have tried that but no luck yet.

  • Tiger upgrade from 10.2.8 - never got "ARchive and Install" option?

I selected the destination. Selected "customize" to add additional software to install. And then clicked whatever was next - sorry don't remember exact button name but it was the next step. AND THEN IT HAPPENED - the install. I noticed that it said "upgrade" for software under the custom install so at least something was recognized. BUT I wanted to select "archive and Install" and "Preserve Users and Network Settings". So am I now hosed? I guess I'll find out in about 10 minutes when its all done but I'm very confused / upset as I read EVERYTHING in advance to make sure this would go smoothly. So why didn't I get that screen as listed in the documentation? GRRRR

    Hello rstwohee:
You should be OK. A&I is an option - why you did not see the option is a function of what you did - and neither of us have any way of determining that.
Run permission repair after the upgrade. Also, it would not hurt to run disk repair from yoru software install DVD.

  • 1GHZ Sonnet and Leopard

    Hello all,
I plan on upgrading my Powermac G4 AGP to a 1GHZ Processor. Now, I could get an MDD for about the same price, but with some of the upgrades I put into the machine, it is a bit safer of a choice to just keep it.
Does anybody have a Sonnet processor, besides the dual, that runs leopard?
I plan on buying either a 1 or 1.2ghz Sonnet Encore ST Processor. A 1.6ghz is a bit overpriced and not what I am willing to pay, so it is out of the question. I plan on putting about 130$ dollars more into this machine for audio editing, and maybe a few dollars more if needed.
My main question is Leopard's performance with a 1ghz Sonnet processor. My max price for a processor is 100$, and the 1GHZ can be found for sub 100$ on ebay. I also like the purple heat sink it comes with, and the fan !
    Current System Specs:
    Powermac G4 AGP 400mhz
1.2GB Ram (768mb at the moment, the other 512mb will be here soon)
    ATI Radeon 9000 64mb
    7200 40GB + 6GB IDE HDDs
USB 2.0 PCI (Coming Soon As Well)
    Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11
Also, I have heard that a 9800 Pro card would be worth it due to my 9000 not supporting Core Image, which from my experience in previous posts, is needed for a smooth leopard experience, to take some of the load of graphics processing off of the cpu. So, in the end I should have 2gb ram, if all other upgrades go well.

Leopard runs just ducky on the Sonnet cards -make certain that you've gotten all the correct firmware installed.
I have a client whose daughter I set up with a Digital Audio G4 and a 1.2 ghz Sonnet, the Radeon 9000, 1.5 GB of ram and two internal drives - one a 40GB and the storage of 80 GB. It runs well enough for the 10 year old kid, but of course she's having problems with the flash-intensive game sites. (The world famous Apple/Flash un-mixy thing strikes again!) Video, sound and all the rest are fine - and for what you're doing - audio - you'll be golden.
Right now on my own G4 table frankenbox, I'm ripping vinyl LP's with an audiophile 2496 card and I've the stock 700mhz CPU. I thought of using the firmware 'trick' to get around the speed limitations of the Leopard installer, but QT 7.6.4, iTunes 9.2.2 and Audacity work well enough in Tiger for the work I'm doing I decided to let it be.
The one caveat with iTunes is when it rounds the corner on 10,000 songs it DOES take a bit of time to startup as it reads the library list.

  • MacPro randomly shuts down after upgrading to GTX 660

So I've had the EVGA GTX 285 mac edition in my MacPro 3,1 for a while now and decided to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 660 because I wanted a card that would provide more power for my 3d work and allow more gaming potential when I'm not working. After the upgrade I have been experiencing random shut downs. At first I thought it was during heavy loads (from my 3d software) but yesterday a shut down occured when I was just typing up an email with hardly anything running in the background. I've tried to diagnose the problem but to no avail. I believe the power supply is enough because the older card uses 2 of the power ports inside the MacPro while this new card uses just one. It's not overheating because everything runs at around 30C - 50C (rarely spiking to 58C.) Anyone know what could be the cause? I am working on my Windows partition by the way.

How interesting...we've noticed the same thing on 3 different occasions as recently as this a.m.. My wife was online for school, and the screen suddenly went "almost" black. There was nothing to do but shut down and turn it back on.
In 3 years since we've had this iMac, and running on 10.4, we never had this problem, so we're also hoping the community out there has some input on this issue.
    Thanks!

  • Encore repeatedly shutting down while transcoding

i am trying to transcode a 2 hour avi to mpeg for DVD...
since it takes a while (3-4 hours??) i normally set it to transcode
and then come back later to check on it...
but every time i do this...i come back and the program is shut down
automatically (this has happened 7-8 times already)
    i do not know why??
    any help on this???

i captured video from a DV tape using plextor 100au into pinnacle stuido software. then imported the avi into Primiere, edited, used the default codec to render an edited avi...
i have used this method successfully about 3-5 times in the past
to build a dvd in encore...
for some reason, encore shuts down during the transcoding phase...
i have seen it trasncode to about 60% and then next time i check
    the app is shut down.
i dont know why this would happen and why there is no error message
    at least.
any advice on how to find out what wrong?
    reinstall encore??

  • Since upgrading to Maverick my macbook pro randomly shuts down all the time, no idea why...

Since I upgraded to Maverick, my Macbook Pro shuts down quite often without warning. No idea why.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
