Leopard TM files to Snow Leopard. How?

Greetings.
I happen to have one macbook pro with snow leopard and another macbook pro with just Leopard.
Obviously Leopard is my old one and snow Leopard is a new toy.
Is it possible to transfer all my data to new mbp via time machine back up files?
I mean will snow leopard "eat" a leopard's back up but still remain a snow leopard? (sorry if this sounds confusing).
What i want is basically transferring all my software, mail, files etc etc to my new Snow Leopard mbp up from my old Leopard mbp. How can i do this?
Ty.

Oh, nice. Didnt know there is such thing even :))
When i start my Migration assistant i have an option to load everything from a time machine back up — will this work in my case?
Another option as far as i understand is to do everything through network and since i am using a wi-fi network and dont have any special cables to connect my mbps it will take much longer. And i have my TM backup on firewire drive so its fast.
Are you sure that assistant is compatible with different OS versions btw? Its not clear from the program itself.

My operating system is Snow Leopard, Version 10.6.8.  I rearranged files in Adobe Bridge, how do I sinc my Finder?

    10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
If you want Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, the same Sales team can give you a download code to use at the Mac AppStore.
To get the App Store, you need to update your new Snow Leopard from 10.6.3 (which is the version on the installer) to 10.6.8 with the combo update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be warned that the upgrades will render a lot of older software unusable, and will need new drivers for printers and scanners in all likelihood.

  • In snow leopard, how make files "invisible"?

in snow leopard, how make files "invisible"?

You can make files or folders invisible from the Terminal. Enter the following command:
    chflags hidden
Don't press enter yet. Put a space after the the word hidden and then drag and drop the item you want to hide into the Terminal window. Now press enter. The item will disappear from view.
You'd better copy that path down though, because if you want to unhide it, you need to know the full path and file or folder name.
As a test, I did one as:
    chflags hidden /Users/myaccount/Desktop/test.tif
This of course is a file named test.tif sitting on the desktop of my user account. Upon hitting enter, it disappeared. To get it back, you unhide it:
    chflags nohidden /Users/myaccount/Desktop/test.tif
The item will reappear. You can see where it would be very important to have that entire path written down. If you forget the name or where it is, you'll be lucky to find it by guessing. It's either that, or you'll have to use the trick to show hidden and system files. Then you'll be able to see the hidden item you're dragging and dropping item into Terminal to unhide it.

  • After installing Snow Leopard, how do you prevent FH files from booting Fireworks?

Even if I choose "always open as" Freehand they still open in Fireworks when I double click the file. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

Do a Get Info (command I) on the file, and in the info window change the "Open with:" to FreeHand MX. That works on my iMac running 10.6.1, and it opens the file subsequently with FH. What doesn't work is the "Change All..." telling the finder to open all similar FH documents with FHMX. I guess we need to wait for a future OS update to fix that.

i reformatted my mac pro from lion back to snow leopard how do i get my music back. i have it on my iphone and when i sync up i still do not have my music on my mac how do i transfer it back to my mac.

Wow, you didn't make a backup of your files first?
You shoudl have come here first for help before doing that.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
All I can say is make sure you have the same account name on the computer like before, even if you have to create a new user under System Preferences>accounts, then log into your itunes account with that and try to reverse sync from the iPhone like you would normally.
Apple doesn't expect one to go backwards, so they are not all that friendly, you may have to ask around on MacRumors for third party software that can reverse sync from iOS devices.
    Good luck

  • Un-zip file in Snow Leopard

How do you un-zip file in Snow Leopard?

    Hey
Apple used to include a program called StuffIt Expander to decompress zipped files, but doesn’t now that OS X lets you unzip files (but not .sit files). However, StuffIt from SmithMicro Software still comes in handy for opening other types of compressed files, notably the .sit or .sitx compressed types. Go to www.stuffit-expander.com or www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html to download a free version of the software or to splurge for the Deluxe version. In addition to compressing files, StuffIt Deluxe lets you encrypt and back up files.

  • My Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. how to why install OS X Mountain Lion ?

my Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. how to why install OS X Mountain Lion ?

    How?
Upgrading to Mountain Lion - http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade
Mac OS X: System requirements for Mountain Lion (10.8) - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
Lion and Mountain Lion application compatibility - http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Kappy 08/2012 post on upgrading to Snow Leopard, then Lion or Mountain Lion -  https://discussions.apple.com/message/19401628 - including how to get Snow Leopard and Lion since Apple removed them from the online store.
MacBook upgrade possibilities - https://discussions.apple.com/message/19577869 - "The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion."
Why?  Good question.  I am a strong believer in not upgrading just because something new comes out, especially if you are running older equipment.  I would say unless you see a need for it, just stick with Snow Leopard until something comes along that absolutely requires Mountain Lion.

  • Problem editing hosts file in Snow Leopard

I am having trouble editing my hosts file in Snow Leopard. Well, I can edit it fine, but the changes seem to give no effect whatsoever.
My hosts file looks like so:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    127.0.0.1 localhost www.localhost.com
I cannot access localhost by entering '127.0.0.1' into my browser, nor can I access it by entering 'www.localhost.com'.
Firefox simply tells me either 'Unable to Connect' or 'The Connection was reset', respectively.
Is there something I am doing wrong?? I have been looking all over the internet all week and cannot see what I might be missing!
The only way I can connect to localhost is by visiting 'http://localhost:8888/'.
If it helps, I am running MAMP.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Never mind, I found out MAMP was using port 8888 instead of 80, so I reset it and now it works fine

I'm having to many problems with Lion freezing up and want to go back to Snow Leopard, how can I do this?

How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard

  • By upgrading to lion will it delete your files from snow leopard

I want to upgrade to lion, but i still have my files on snow leaoprd. If i upgrade, will i lose my personal files?

No. Lion does not erase your files. It will upgrade your Snow Leopard system files. You should do the following prior to installing Lion:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Create a bootable clone: Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means an external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Many more files in Snow Leopard

I recently cloned my Leopard 10.5.8 drive, and then upgraded the new drive to Snow Leopard, and applied all updates etc., on a first-gen Mac Pro.
Checking the file count on the Snow Leopard volume, it's just under 1.9 million files, whereas the Leopard volume had/has right around 1 million.
Any ideas on why so many more files under Snow Leopard? I've checked the file count of various individual folders, even using Onyx to check the hidden folders, and there's only around 600-700K files visible.
Storage footprint also went up maybe 10-20GB, but not that significant on a 1.5TB drive.
It doesn't appear to be causing any problems, but is certainly strange, and causes me to wonder if something went wrong in the upgrade, or if I have some subtle long-term issue.
Any ideas on what could have happened, and what to do to correct the situation? Or should I just ignore?
    Thanks for any thoughts.
    Ken

No, David--the top-level directory structure looks the same as the old drive. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

  • I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?

I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version (CC2014) and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file>open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?
I have tried 'Open with' and the version of the program now installed on my computer isn't even suggested as an option and when I browse for it, the file wont open with it anyway

On Windows (don't know about Mac), the latest version will always take over the file association, and become the default for indd files. It's impossible to change it.
But there is a plugin for ID that makes this possible. Never tried it myself.

  • My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.
