Leopard unusable

If you have not upgraded yet, count yourself lucky. This OS is unusable for anyone in software development. It is unstable, slow, memory-hungry, drive-intensive and generally unsuitable for use.
I have been an Apple developer since the Lisa, but this version of the OS has me seriously considering a move to a Linux platform. Since installing Leopard on my 10-month-old MacBook Pro with 3GB memory, I have, after five hours, been unable to even check my email. Starting with 12GB of free disk, I have since had to remove another 19GB of files to reduce (not eliminate) the number of 'disk full' messages.
I have so far found that I cannot run any of my LibXML-based development projects, and cannot compile new versions of LibXML. I have been unable to use the Finder to copy files from backup disks because the memory use soars through the roof stopping copies. In short, I have yet to discover one single solitary part of this OS that is working.
Before I get a load of the obvious, yes - I did manage to run software update. Once. It will no longer do anything more than go half-way through the checking for updates part before hanging. I have rebooted several times, though frankly that process is lame in the extreme. My Sun servers don't need rebooting except when I want to replace both PSUs at the same time.
What on earth was Apple thinking of with this 'upgrade'? They've obviously changed a ton of things at a pretty low level (note that the BSD-like ps -aux is now the AT&T ps -eaf). Would it not have been nice if they had mentioned to us software developers that upgrading would take a week out of our lives?
If anyone else out there has had the same sort of horrific experiences that I have, I urge you to spread the word - Leopard is spotty: beware.

Yes, there were developer previews out there - but does anyone in their right mind switch a development machine to pre-release OSs? I did the testing - my software runs alright on Leopard, but my development machine does not.
Specifics -
Incredible drive and memory use: Working on a machine with a 120GB, I had 12 GB free before the upgrade. Advertised in the upgrade window was 775MB, and at first that was right, but within seconds of rebooting after install, I got the first of many 'out of disk' messages. Eventually, I cleared down 19 GB extra - following the maths? That should be 31GB free or so. Right now, I'm back down to 4.9 free. Explain?
3GB core memory - that is the max that Apple offers on this machine - the premium laptop that Apple sold less than a year ago. Why then do I see an endless spiral of memory usage that culminates in 60% swap in about 10 minutes?
X11: what went on there? This was a working and useful tool - I spend most of my life in it. It is now a wastrel add-on that has lost a great deal of functionality including losing my hard-worked 'Applications' menu entries. Of course I have back-ups, but what on earth went on there? And why is X11 now dog-slow?
Compiler: Why can I not now compile and test LibXML2 when I could on 10.4 just a day ago? What has gone on that Apple has not figured out in the six months since release (note that I have not been hasty to upgrade - my livelihood depends on writing productive code every day)? for that matter, why has Apple not bothered to include recent releases of LibXML and LibXSLT when those seem tp be core technologies?
By the way - since I started this message, my previous 22GB free has fallen to 4.8GB. Any explanation there?
So far - and it has already been a long 7 hours - I see nothing except the glimmer of hope that is my backup - taking back to 10.4.

  • Expose in Leopard unusable on Macbooks?

    hey guys,
for those of you who run leopard on a macbook with intel gma 950 graphics.
how does expose run on your book? does it run smooth?
to me - when i've turned on my 3d dock and even if my dock is on the side of the screen (2d) - it seems that expose gets really slow. is this the case because of my intel gma graphics or is it a software bug? i have no chance to compare it to a new x3100 graphics macbook to see if it runs "smoother" there.
so with this slow expose windows it really doesn't make fun to work. this was 1000 times better in tiger.
    does anyone know anything?

You're not alone with your Macbook. I'm having the same probs as you with my 2.16 MPB with 2GB of ram. I have a number of friends who i spoke to who say they don't have any problems. It wasn't the case when I tried it for myself. I even went to the Apple store an tried it on a 2.4 17" MBP it's all the same. It's just the matter of whether you notice it or not. While it's probably not as severe as yours but it is definitely bugging the **** out of me. Though I like the 3D dock but I just cannot handle the jerkiness.
APPLE PLEASE COME UP WITH A FIX FOR THIS! I'm sure 3D gaming is way more taxing then some simple expose´ and 3D dock animation.
Btw, you can change the dock style to be non-3d at the bottom as well. Which is what I've done:
Type the first command in terminal, hit return then followed by the second.
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
    killall Dock
To get back the 3D dock just repeat the same steps but after "boolean" type NO

  • Snow Leopard unusable with Broken Pipe messages in the console

    Hello
Recently, probably after having installed OS X 10.6.8, I noticed that after a while, something within the OS becomes saturated leading to no new processes being able to be started.  All existing programs continue to run and all seems normal except if a running program needs to call another program (e.g., Mail needing to fetch a password from Keychain Access).
The console then becomes awash with broken pipe messages and a whole bunch of error logs are created for various programs.
This is causing me great irritation as everytime I am forced to restart the machine (sometimes by forcing a hard-reboot).
I would really appreciate any help on this matter.  I would rather not have to completely re-install the OS if I can help it.

I was hoping I'd get a magic solution instead of the dreaded OS reinstall.
That is the magic solution, it gives you a new OS X copy which you immediately update, leaves all your files and programs alone. (unless they have kernel extensions and you need to update those programs)
It's fast, easy and simple, it's Lion "overwrites" that are a pain because it needs the Internet.
There is only one person here that spends his time analyzing such under the hood details and usually has to tell you what I'm saying anyway because that's the only way to correct it.
I'm trying to get you done and out of my way and you back to your life.
I must say that I am quite disappointed with the kernel failing in this way - it is not really in keeping with the robust/Unix reputation...
Don't know what the problem is, it is very robust, but hard drives are based on magnetic bits and those bits fail, the best OS in the world can't stand up if the chair it's standing on is kicked out from underneath it.
OS X only takes 4.5GB, Apple could have incorporates a automatic recovery parttion check upon boot and restored OS X if if didn't boot, but they didn't do that.
Then when they have to place a recovery partiton like in Lion as they are phasing out the optical drive, they make one get online to get a new copy of OS X.
    How stupid is that?

  • Need to re-install Leopard but won't work with Retail Disks

Hi I have a Macbook 2.0Ghz (santa rosa) with a few problems (poor ethernet performance, poor open gl performance)
I have decided it will be best to re-install to see if that fixed the problems, however I have lost the install disks that came with the Macbook, I have a retail copy of Leopard (unused) 10.5.0 but when I try to install it says it doesn't meet the requirements, presumably because the Macbook came out after 10.5.0. So how do I re-install, is it possible to get replacement disks?
I've tried restoring 10.5.2 system onto the macbook but it still has problems with performance (taking 1 hour to copy a 10mb file over Gigabit Ethernet !!!)

I can't get my head around it, because when booted from the internal drive airport connection to the network is fast, which suggests the harddrive is ok and the ethernet card might be faulty, but booting from the external firewire gives me normal speed ethernet so it can't be faulty, which suggests its a harddrive problem since that is the only thing that has changed.
Its starting to make me mad!!!! lol
Most likely it could just be a faulty motherboard, or in the Mac world, a faulty logic board. (Can't really understand why can't we just call it a motherboard)

  • After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22. (Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)  Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? What can I do to fix it?

After installing Leopard, my G4 will no longer boot in OS 9.22.
(Classic still works, but I need it to boot in OS 9.)
Any clues about what the Leopard installer might have done to my machine that rendered OS 9 boot unusable? (And what can I do to fix it?)
    Details:
    G4 Gigabit Ethernet
    Boot ROM version: 4.2.8fl
    Accelerator card added: 1.6 MHz
    1.5 Gig Ram
I have erased the partition that had Leopard installed on it.
    I zapped the pram.
In Open Firmware, I "reset-nvram", and then "reset-all"
I tried to reinstall G4 FW Update 4.2.8, but that must be done when booted from OS 9, and of course, that's the problem: it won't boot into 9.
I tried restarting from 9.2.1 DVD.
I tried restarting from an external firewire drive containing OS 9.2.2.
I tried moving a fresh OS 9.2.2 system folder into an empty partition on an internal hard drive. (Partition was created WITH OS 9 drivers installed.)
All attempts to boot into OS 9 give me the same results - grey screen - no spinning beach ball, no icons or logos - just a blank grey screen.
This machine still works fine in OS 10.3 and 10.4, and it worked fine for many years booting into OS 9, until I installed Leopard, and I haven't been able to boot into OS 9 since then, although I have done considerable research online and tried many things.
I have since learned that this machine does not support Leopard - 10.5. Fine, but how did it break 9.2.2?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for checking in, BDAQua.
    Problem solved.
In the docs that came with my Powerlogix accelerator card, I found this sentence buried:
"If you reset the PRAM, the NVRAM code for OS9 compatibility is cleared, so you will have to boot from the Firmawre Update CD and perform this process again in order to boot in OS9."
The "process" it's referring to is the process of setting up the NVRAM for booting into OS9 from the CD.
Fortunately, I was able to find the disk, and it worked as expected. I can now, once again boot into OS9.
Conclusion: My (unadvised) attempt to load Leopard on this old machine apparently reset the PRAM on the accelerator card and cleared the NVRAM code for OS9 boot. Although I did attempt to reset the NVRAM via Open Firmware, it did not reset it on the accelerator card.
So, thank you BDAQua, for your "Ah yes" . . . that's all I needed to steer me in the right direction.
    Gratefully,
    tupester

  • Mac pro 4,1 2009 every OS but the Snow Leopard takes 6gb of RAM just on boot? Yosemite unusable

I have a 2009 Mac Pro quad 2.66 ghz with original 12gb of ram(an option at time of pruchace, but I also have different modules for 6gb from another machine of the same series, problem is not related to the RAM modules). I also have multiple hard drives and tried installing everything from Lion onwards to any of those (even having a single drive in the system), and the problem presists.
    The issue:
When I boot up Snow Leopard system takes around 1.5-2gb of ram and that is perfectly fine. Everything works great.
When I boot up Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, the system itself takes 6gb of RAM or more just too boot. This can't be right, how would any newer Mac even work with their 4gb.
I noticed that in Activity monitor system automatically opens a ton of apps that have no use on my system like WiFi(that I don't have). Seems like it automatically boots every single app that is part of the system, it takes it like 30 minutes to load all those useless features, and system is crawling then, works ok 30 minutes in but I have half my ram wasted.
How do I stop it from doing this? Everything is fine with Snow Leopard, but I am stuck in it, and I can't purchase a lot of apps that I would if I could actually use newer software?

    Problem description:
Yosemite takes up 4.5-6gb of ram just on boot compared to the 1.5-2 gb that Snow Leopard takes on the same system

Basically, 5GB of my RAM is gone just because I turned my computer on, and ok this is on HHD, but even then Snow Leopard is completely functional one minute after I push the power button, Yosemite takes that long too boot, too, but then it takes it another half hour to stop spinning the hard drvie for it's unused apps and actually let me load non-system apps and files and start working.
I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT! How do I stop the system from cache-ing recent files?

  • When iCal in Leopard starts, it is totally empty and unusable

After booting up and starting iCal, it is always totally empty and unusable (none of the buttons work)... There are no calendars, shared calendars, or subscriptions. Quitting and re-opening usually loads as usual and there is no data loss.
This happened the very first time I upgraded to Leopard (I thought everything was permanently lost) and has been happening since.
Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

I had the same problems as many others here and may have stumbled upon an answer.
I had no problems after installing Leopard, mine just occurred in the last day.
I deleted the prefs files and it brought my calendars back but when I tried to view my to dos, as soon as the side window opened, it didn't crash the program (i.e. shut it down) but it was useless and I had to quit anway.
    Delete prefs, start again.
I had a look at the calendars in there to see if this blank "home" and other folder was there and it wasn't. However I did find that a IMAP email account that I use, connected with another organization, was appearing in my list of calendars. I didn't put it there, but it was feeding info to iCal.
Once I disabled the account in mail, all functionality in iCal was restored.
    Hope this helps.

  • Some images created in Tiger unusable under Leopard - can crash Aperture

I have tried both updates and clean installs of Leopard on my MBP and external firewire disks. In both cases I find that a large number of images in my libraries (built under Tiger), give Aperture fits. For example, whilst I can see thumbnails, I can't export versions - messages come up to say the images can't be decoded. Similarly, if I try to edit or view some images full screen, I get a message saying "unsupported format". At times, trying to work with these images crashes Aperture.
In a couple of cases, I still have the offending images on cards and I was then able to import them anew into Aperture (running under Leopard) - these work OK.
Boinx Fotomagico under Leopard stopped running and quit without warning trying to run previously created slideshows that incorporate some of the above-mentioned images.
I conclude that there is a problem with Leopard's treatment of images rather than Aperture specifically. However, I have no clue how to address the problem. At present Leopard is just unusable for me.

Knowing such of these problems, I decided to use Tiger as my main operating system.
Here, as I play safety, Leopard is always in test, not in real use.

  • PS CS4 almost unusable with snow leopard

Installed Snow Leopard.  Ran the adobe uninstall for CS3 then did a fresh install of CS4.  Downloaded all the updates.  When I open Photoshop I get a constant stream of the same error message that reads "Could not complete your request because of a program error" screen shot attached.  It makes Photoshop pretty much unusable.  I'm not having the same problems with Illustrator.  I'm working on a MacBook Pro w/ 1.83 GHz Intel Processor and 1.5 GB 667 Mhz Memory.  If anyone could help me suss out the problem I'd be eternally grateful.
    Cheers,
    Bummersville

I have run CS4 with Snow Leopard installed by three different methods:
    1. Default Upgrade method to my Leopard volume
    2. Erase and install SL then migrate everything from my Leopard volume.
    3. Erase and install SL, install fresh CS4, no migration, no other software installed
All three crash Bridge and Photoshop frequently, especially while using the output module to make PDF contact sheets (crashes while entering the settings).
1 and 2 also crash on quitting the prog, (but my Leopard has spells of doing that too)
    Machine is Mac Pro 4 x 2.66 ver 1,1 with 8Gb RAM
Did all the standard stuff before and after installs, permissions, DU etc plus PRAM, SMC. Also trashed the prefs in Bridge and CS4.
The fact that the "erase/install/CS4 only" method crashes tells me that there is something hardware related in my machine (and probably other peoples too) which SL + CS4 doesn't like, and that there is no point in chasing software solutions.
I would be grateful if anyone who is having no problems with CS4 and Snow Leopard could spend a few minutes making contact sheets with the output module...use all the options. I have successfully done several contact sheets, but also had most crashes while entering the settings.
    Thanks

  • Front Row is unusable in Leopard

I knew I should've waited to upgrade until 10.5.2. I've been using OS X since 10.1 and every upgrade is loaded with problems. So, against my better judgement, I decided to upgrade right away again. After doing so, I find Front Row to be completely unusable. Here's the issues:
1.) On my iMac, when running Front Row the machine keeps going to sleep every 15 seconds or so. It sleeps for less than a second, but needless to say it makes watching video useless. When I say it goes to sleep, what I'm seeing is the screen go black and the light on the front pulsates.
2.) If I use my MacBook, also running Leopard, to connect to my iMac's library over Front Row, it'll be usable for a while and then it freezes. It takes several minutes for my MacBook to become usable and then I find that the internet connection on my iMac is gone. I only lose my internet connection when connecting from another machine through Front Row.
3.) I don't know who thought this was a good idea, and I was hoping they'd fix this on the Apple TV, but now my TV series have all their seasons lumped together into one big frickin' list!!! This is absolutely stupid. I know I can just change the series name to include the season number, but then the list of TV series gets huge. You'd think being 2 1/2 years in development they would've caught something dumb like this.
Anyone else experiencing the same issues?
    Thanks

I have been having a different problem. When I watch a DVD in Front Row, the remote works fine on the initial DVD menu, but if I select the "bonus material", the remote won't work right on that menu. I can't move the cursor around. If I press up or down it reverts to controlling the volume, and left/right just bring up the progress bar. I have tried this with several different DVD's.

  • Airport Disk Showing only unused space after leopard install

Now that I have gotten Leopard to recognize the Lacie 500 gig disk attached via USB to the AEBS, it will not show the existing files on the hard drive (400 gig worth), but does show the unused disk space and any new files I have added to the disk recently. Can anyone tell me how to get the entire drive to show up with the existing files? Also, when I "Get Info" on the disk it shows that the disk is 500 gig in size.
If I hook up the lacie disk via firewire directly to my macbook it works normally.
    Thanks
    Eric

    Go to Finder = Preferences
"General" icon and check [x] Connected Servers
I had to reboot to make this work. Your mileage may vary per when the disk icon is visible.

  • Snow Leopard has made my computer unusable

    Please advise:
Upgraded to Snow Leopard last week. After the install and software update (10.6.1), my iMac (24-inch : 2.66GHz,2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) totally freaked out: freezes during start up leaving the wallpaper but no menu bar or dock; apps like Safari, Firefox, and even iTunes crash the system and won't force quit; iPhone won't synch. I restarted up in Safe Boot mode and it worked fine, albeit with the limited functionality of Safe Boot.
I thought it was a bad install, so I restored the computer to 10.5.8 using Time Machine. This took hours. I installed Snow Leopard again, the crashing and freezing started immediately. I repaired permissions, verified fonts and all the usual suspects, but no problems were apparent.
Tech support suggested first that I remove all startup items. The computer finally booted up, but then crashed minutes later. I called back and the new guy suggested I erase the hard drive, then reinstall. He suggested I set up the computer first, then migrate all my data from a Time Machine backup as if I had just bought the computer. This took hours. As soon as my documents, settings, and apps came over, the system started crashing again.
Now I have a computer taht only works in Safe Boot mode. I guess I can just restore 10.5.8 using the Time Machine (again). is it possible for year-old Mac is not compatible with Snow Leopard? Is all this crashing soing any harm to my system?
Suggestions? I've never experienced problems of this magnitude with Apple software. I'm a relatively expereinced user, but have never seen anything like this.

Crashing is not great for a machine or system. No, your machine is Sno compatible. I would go back to Leo again--using TM, Then, I would make a bootable clone of this system on an external firewire 800 drive. This installation is your backup and fail safe device. Restoring the clone to your internal will be faster than from TM if you ever want to go back to Leo again.
Then, I would do an erase and install of Sno. In doing an erase and install, I would first repair disk. I would just use the quick erase method. At the end of the installation process, you will have the opportunity to restore your data and other things to your new installation from your clone or your TM. I would restore only my data--and from the clone. After doing so, I would reinstall all apps by hand (not by restoring from the clone). Repair permissions after your install is complete. I would use the same user name and password that you now are using on your Sno install. Be sure and be connected to the internet when installing and that all peripherals are unplugged.
I definitely would not restore your users and settings from your Leo install or your TM. If you do, then you may bring your problems to the new install. Above I said to reinstall your apps by hand. You might choose to take a small risk and to restore them from your clone to keep from having to reinstall all your apps assuming that reinstalling them would be a daunting task. If you are missing items after your install, then they will be in your home folder on the clone.

  • Leopard Upgrade DVD unusable - Not readable

    Hello everybody,
I can't install Leopard on my brand new Macbook Pro.
I bought this upgrade DVD on Apple.com for $10. I purchased my Macbook Pro on October.
Each time I insert the DVD in the laptop, the computer tries to read it, but fails. No icon appear on the desktop. After a minute or so, the DVD is automatically ejected.
Can Apple send me another Leopard Upgrade DVD ? Or exchange it ?
    Thank you.

    Hi gobolino28-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Problems have been reported with some installation DVDs. Is it safe to assume that you can read other DVDs?
You must contact Apple in France regarding an exchange. All I can offer is this starting point: Contacting Apple for Support and Service

  • After Snow Leopard upgrade, my HP Color LaserJet 2600n is unusable

I use my HP printer everyday with 10.5 and quite happy with it.
Now, after the recommended upgrade, I cannot print anymore.
I am quite lucky that I have a VM Ware with Windows OS installed. Now, I have to PDF the document I want to print and then print from my VM Windows OS.
How could Apple do that? They said this is incremental upgrade, but, it kills the printer drivers. Huh...
I then called local support. His recommendations are:
    1) Call HP and ask them why
    2) Downgrade to Leopard 10.5 and wait until the driver is available for 10.6; Then, upgrade the OS;
    lol.

I've exhausted all the suggestions that I've found on-line, IP printing guntenprint drivers, redownloaded hp drivers, etc, etc. Still can't print!! I've hooked up my laptop directly to the printer and still won't work. I see the printer via Bonjour but it will not add it using the HP driver, using the Gutenprint driver I can add it but it won't print.

  • HELP - Expose - Leopard - Basically Unusable

Since I upgraded to Leopard, Expose has operated terribly slow and awkward.
Whether using the hard side mouse keys or the hot corners, Expose flashes on screen with very jagged, herky jerky motion, most times freezing all together for a few seconds.
I ran into an old post somehwere talking about the same issue only regarding the Tiger Update and the fix being something to do with XCode tools and some an activated CRT monitor code.
All I know is, I hit the hard mouse buttons and Expose acts up, every time.
    Help Please.

Your upgrade must have failed.  Unless you very very recently upgraded Lion, as in the last hour or two.  Then you need to go to System Preferences and Energy Saver and stop it from automatically sleeping.  Let it sit overnight.  It could be spotlight re-indexing your disk and slowing you way way down.
If that doesn't work then you can re-install Lion cleanly.  You need to finish backing up your data.  Then make a Lion USB flash boot disk or DVD.  Hold option key when you boot and select the USB or DVD drive.  Run Disk Utility and delete then recreate the partition, exit Disk Utility and install Lion.  Then restore your applications and data.
