LEOPARD UPDATE

Does anyone know if I can jump from Panther to Leopard without installing Tiger ( osx 10.4) or not? I can't find Tiger anywhere and need to update my computer!

Hi afrophonic, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Yes, as long as it meets the Leopard requirements...
* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
* 512MB of memory
* DVD drive for installation
* 9GB of available disk space

  • Snow Leopard Update Broke 2 Printers (Samsung, Brother)

One of the Snow Leopard updates has broken both of my printers. Both are hard-wired network printers that previously worked fine.
    1. Brother HL-5250DN B/W laser
    - When I print HTML pages, the page background color defaults to black, so I get a solid black page with graphics stuck in. I first noticed this in Safari; changing the "print backgrounds" setting doesn't fix the problem. I then saved a page (www.apple.com) to HTML source and tried printing it from other apps. Firefox & Text Edit both had the same problem. MS Word (Office 2004) did not.
    - If I create a PDF file from a web page in Safari, then print it using Preview, the problem occurs. If I print it using Photoshop Elements, it prints correctly.
Note that images LOOK fine. The all-black background only occurs when printing.
    2. Samsung CLX-3170 Color Laser
No matter what I try to print, I always get the same error: "couldn't create rgb colorspace". I have searched both these forums and the web and can't even find a description of what might be causing this (although may Mac owners seem to be having variations of the problem).
    3. Troubleshooting -- What I have tried (systematically, multiple times)
    - Re-installed latest printer drivers from Manufacturer's sites
    - Installed Gutenprint 2.4 CUPs drivers
    - Repaired permissions
    - Reset the Print subsystem and re-installed all printers
    - Tried different printer drivers where available (the Brother has a BR-script driver)
    - Run OS X software update
    - Restarted my system
    - Removed printer-related items from Logon
    - Reset Safari
    - Run Onyx and cleaned all caches and nearly everything else
    4. I have an iMac G5 running 10.5.8. It prints all of the above to both printers with no problems.
At this point I'm starting to wonder how well Windows 7 might run on my iMac... (only half kidding).
I've wasted hours on this problem. I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.

If you are using the Brother driver, have you tried using the Generic PostScript PPD as a workaround?

Which driver are you using when adding the printer? Have you tried the other one? Samsung has SL drivers for this model, so you shouldn't have to use the Gutenprint driver.
I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.
Apple doesn't write the drivers, so if using the Generic PostScript PPD or switching drivers doesn't work, you might have better luck contacting Brother and Samsung.

  • How do I force/re-install failed Leopard update (USB no longer works)?

    Hi everyone,
The last Leopard update last week went smooth with two out of three of my Macs.
Unfortunately the update did not work well on my MacBook Pro 17". I let the update
run over night and in the morning it was still stuck on an "installing" screen. I had no
choice but to force a reboot. From what I can tell a lot of the system .kext files were
updated, but my kernel was not. How do I know this? Well my USB ports no longer work
(well at least with USB memory sticks). I checked my kernel version and it says 9.3.0. The
versions for the System.kext file under /System/Library/Extensions is showing 9.4.0.
Obviously I got far enough into the update that the newer system file works (almost)
    with the older kernel.......
So how can I force this update to run again??? I really don't want to reload my MacBook Pro
from scratch. There must be a fix... Please help!
    Thanks,
    Mike Bender

Alternatively, restore your previous good and tested bootable backup/clone, then run the COMBO update again. Don't have one? Then take some time to peruse:

  • Photo window won't open since Leopard update

After I installed the Leopard update June 2 from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3, the next time I clicked on IPhoto, its name showed in the Finder window but the window with my nearly 18,000 photos did not show up. I tried the "Go - Volumes/" suggestion in a previous reply but it didn't work.
I tried importing new photos by inserting the media card which usually opened Iphoto where I could click "import" but although the icon for the card reader shows up on the desktop, Iphoto's window does not.
When I click on the card reader icon where only the most recent UNimported photos exist, a list of Canon folders show. I don't have anything Canon.
Those most recent images show in Cover Flow: the path is Device, DCIM folder, 197Canon folder, image.
Has anyone else had trouble with the Leopard update and Iphoto?
    What should I try?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Airport problems after leopard update

    Hello, guys.
I need your support to solve a "mistery". I remember a similar post 4 or 5 months ago but in this case issue was solved with the next patch.
I have been installing several leopard updates and now I can't connect me to my wireless lan. Leopard cannot understand my password.
No problem if I want to connect me to unsecure wireless lan.
I think that is a problem with the password entry window code.
    Some kind of suggestion ?
    Thsnks in advanced.

Today I downloaded the iPhone SDK 3.1.3 XCode 3.2.1 Snow Leopard update.
After installing it, I looked in the Project Info. In the Deployyment section, the "Mac OS X Deployment Target" is set to "Max OS X 10.5".
Naturally, as fussy I am, I changed it to Mac OS X 10.6, which is what I want. After Building, it reports an ld error: i.e.
ld: library not found for -lcrt1.10.6.o
Why does this happen? Did others have the same experience?
Is this normal or how to fix? (Other than the obvious step to go to look for the missing library and try to install it myself).

  • KEYBOARD NOT WORKING LEOPARD UPDATE POSSIBLE CODING ERROR??

having read through all threads concerning this issue of internal MBP keyboards not working after installing leopard, and comparing to my own experience, it seems that everyone started having this problem soon after they must have downloaded the 1st software update to leopard.
my MBP's keyboard currently does not work. How am I typing you ask?
With the new apple USB aluminum keyboard. My boyfriend has it for his mac mini.
Because all these keyboard problems are new and happening to everyone now, we have to assume this is related to the leopard update. They JUST released the aluminum keyboard around the same time they released leopard, so they probably had bugs with the usb aluminum keyboard and had to make some kind of change in the code with how leopard relates with keyboard input. so, it's most likely a coding error and we are at the mercy of apple for a freaking software update ASAP. Don't erase and install - because that will just take you back before the update, and then after you update your software again, it will happen again and your keyboard will crash. I updated my software yesterday and almost immediately started having this issue. my MBP is a week old and i had no issues before this with the keyboard until the update.
The best thing we can do at this point is FLOOD APPLE WITH PHONE CALLS. We paid upwards of $3000 for a computer - holding down a key and messing with text edit is NOT acceptable.
These are NOT solutions. Every time your keyboard stops working, and holds you up from doing your work, CALL THEM.
That's what we think is happening...maybe something more severe is happening and we're wrong. but, hopefully, this is all it is and they will FIX IT as soon as possible because it's really annoying.

Is anyone else running vmware or parallels?
I had both installed at different times and realized that for whatever reason the kernel extensions for both were installed on my machine. I downloaded both from their respective website and ran the full uninstall.
As of this moment my (then-persistent) keyboard issues are gone. I am not positive this was the solution as I just might not have had the problem yet (as they tended to be very sporadic), but it might be a good test if anyone else is using either of those software suites.
If you open a terminal window and type kextstat, you will be shown a full report of kernel extensions that exist on your machine. Towards the bottom of the list parallels and/or vmware will be listed if they are installed.
Hope this helps. Though I am still wondering if Leopard is the problem.

  • Recent Time Machine and Airport Leopard update causes Kernel panic

I had 15 iMac's in a classroom that were all updated to the new Leopard update for Time Machine and Airport. When they restarted, they all gave a kernel panic error. Successive restarts continue with the screen starting with the kernel panic error message and asking for a shutdown.
I am extremely sure that it had to be those updates because they were all fine before that. I doubt 30 pieces of RAM could have gone kaput all at once. Since we have a dual boot setup, if I press the alt key when I restart, I can boot into the Windows side without any problems.
If somebody has had a similar problem and found a way to do something about the kernel error, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I did the usual zapping RAM and stuff. It didn't help.

  • Leopard update unmounted some of my FW800 drives

I have a ton of video and picture data that I access often enough to keep it on FW800 drives instead of archiving to tape. Anyhow, over time, I have added and added. So I now have 6 drives varying from 500gb to 2tb each. Never had a problem, did update, boom half are gone from desktop and Disk Utility not seeing them. I have heard lots of debate on how many FW800 you can have. They are all G-Tech and they claim up to 16 daisy chained cables can be used, meaning 15 devices. The tech specs say 62 addressable devices. Again, this has been working for about a year with no problems.
Intel MacPro Oct-Core, maxed Ram, latest softeware updates.
    -Kevin.

I resolved this one myself - for any others reading this at a later date, this is the FYI.
Apparently my desktop got smacked after the update and when I used Disk Utility to verify my primary internal HDD, it said I had a lot of errors for the desktop. I rebooted off the Leopard update disc and ran Disk utility from the DVD on my boot HDD and did the repairs. Rebooted off HDD and then turned the power on one by one on the external FW drives until I saw each one mount individually and it corrected the problem.
    -Kevin.

Sony has put in a position that the camera was connected with their software called PlayMemories Home . This then allows you to import movies and photos on the computer and then use them in different ways. However, when the camera is connected to the mac and I said Mass Storage USB Connected , then you execute this program I told you about two seconds later , however returns an error message that is: Connect the device to your computer or multimedia support . I do not understand .

  • Imac i5 snow leopard update

Hi I bought an imac i5 27inch just before xmas 09. No problems. I bought the snow leopard update today ($40 from Harvey Norman) and tried to install it. Initially it started ticking over. It initially said 45 miniutes to install. Then I went back about 5 mins later than it said 49 mins to install. I then came back about an hour later and there was a white screen with the apple logo. I left it for another hour.....just the same. So I switched it off and on with the power button. White screen reappeared. Left it for two hours and no change. Took out all the peripherals. Switched it off and on....and left it for 5 hours....still the same. The mac does not respond. I cannot get the snow leopard disc out. Not sure what to do. The imac is getting quite hot (like it is doing something) when it is on....I have now switched it off. I would very grateful for any ideas. This imac was not loaded up with much.....most of the hard drive is free and there is extra (apple) RAM.

I don't understand why you bought a Snow Leopard upgrade disk. The 27" iMac i5, introduced in October of 2009, comes with Snow Leopard installed. Are you sure your iMac is the one described in this Technical Specification?
If so, the retail Snow Leopard DVD, released several months before it, does not fully support the hardware in your iMac & you should only reinstall the OS if needed using the system discs that came with your iMac.

  • Snow leopard update lost iPhoto

    Hi
Sorry but the preamble is a bit long.
My son gave me his mac mini - great. Had installed windows on it instead of snow leopard (why???).
He had bought the Snow leopard update disc - Mac came with Leopard.
    I want Snow leopard.
I inserted the Snow leopard disc and installed it fine.
    Where has iPhoto gone?
I think it's on the original Leopard disc but it's not in the optional instals.
The Mac will not boot from the Leopard disc (I suspect because it's the previous OS).
    Can anyone help?
I realise that I should have installed the original Leopard disc before the Snow Leopard update.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Barry Hemphill wrote:
I am surprised that you were able to install OS X 10.6 without your system having a previous version of OS X installed - in fact, I thought that was impossible from the upgrade disk.
This is only true for the special Snow Leopard upgrade discs that are not retail products. One example is the white "CPU Drop-in DVD" that came with some Macs manufactured shortly after Snow Leopard was released or still may come with some refurbished older Mac models that Apple sometimes sells. All these Macs originally came with Leopard installed (& that is what their included grey system discs install). The "drop in" disc allows users to upgrade these Macs to Snow Leopard but does require Leopard to be installed first for licensing reasons.
I received one of these discs in the box with the refurbished 2008 20" iMac I bought from Apple. You can't mistake it for a retail disc -- although both are white & have the same Snow Leopard picture on them, the "CPU Drop-in DVD" label & the "not to be sold separately" notice make it clear it isn't a retail product.

  • MacBook Pro and Leopard updates

I got a MacBook Pro in January with OS X 10.5 installed. Soon after I got it, I started having a variety of problems.
--After sleeping, it would wake up but the screen would be turned off. Sometimes the screen would turn on if I pressed the power button. Sometimes it wouldn't, and I'd have to shut down by pressing and holding the power button.
--If I plugged it in while sleeping, it would wake up, even if it was closed.
--It unexpectedly went to sleep a couple times.
--When I opened it after l sleeping, it sometimes would shut off rather than waking up.
--The sound turned off completely--iTunes indicated that it was playing, but there was no sound.
    --It froze frequently.
Other people have mentioned several other problems on MacBook Pros, especially with the keyboard, trackpad, and airport. See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1432781&tstart=0
I took it to an Apple store and they reset the power manager. That didn't solve the problems, so I went back. The second time he advised me to uninstall the 10.5.2 update, which came out in mid-February. Apparently there's something about this update that messes up the hardware on certain models of the MacBook Pro--specifically the 2.2 GHz models. I ran an "Archive and Install" (reinstalled Leopard from the install discs) and then didn't install the 10.5.2 update. I did that a week ago and haven't had any problems since.
My only problem now is that OS X 10.5 is not as good as 10.5.2. 10.5.2 fixes some of the annoying features of 10.5, like the translucent menu bar. Does anyone know when Apple will release a new Leopard update that doesn't cause these problems?

    Henry
I have an MBP 2.2 purchased earlier last year and have applied updates since. I've had none of the problems others refer to. So to your problems.
    1) Always run Disk Utility after an update and do the Repair permissions. If the window indicates that some permissions have been repaired rerun the program until it's all clear. Some advise to repair permissions both before and after an update.
    2) To upgrade to 10.5.2 download the combo update for your machine from Apple/Support/Downloads. This is more reliable than Software Upgrade for your situation. Again do a Repair permissions after the restart(s). Don't interrupt the restart process. I think in this case there is a double restart before the machine completes the update.
    3) After all this run Software Update to see how many more updates are required. Probably these can be done through SU. Again repair permissions after.
    4) Check your Energy Saver preferences in System Preferences to either set them to default values or as you want them. If at some time these were changed this could explain some of the unexpected behaviours.
There are all sorts of issues arise for different people but I have found Apple products to be very reliable since I bought my first Mac in 1984. Perfect - no.
