Leopard Upgrade and Loss of File Transfer to Windows PC

Loss of File Transfer to Windows PC - I successfully upgraded my MacBook to Leopard with the following exception where I was previously able to transfer files to a Windows PC. I can still connect to the PC but unable to see the folders in "finder" or move files over to it. I can still do this however from my other Mac (iMac) which is still on Tiger. What would the upgrade have done to prevent file transfer being done?
Thanks Neil

I had similar problems with browsing Windows shares... Initially I performed an Upgrade installation of Leopard. A temporary work-around was to use the IP address of the Windows computer.
For example (in the Connect To Server dialog) use:
smb://<IP address>/sharename
Obviously, you'll have to determine the local network IP for your Windows computer and know the name of the share. You can do this by opening up a CMD window and issuing the following command at the prompt:
ipconfig/all
Hope that wasn't too "technical".
Note: What fixed the whole problem for me was to perform a clean installation of Leopard... Now all the Windows computers on the network appear under Shared in the Finder sidebar.

iPhone contacts: file transfer to Windows 7 via USB-cable
My iPhone can communicate with the computer only via USB-cable (no mobile data, no bluetooth, no internet, no outlook). As I want to get the phone to the "doctor" I want to save specifically my contact data and calendar details on the computer (OS: Windows 7). How can I solve this task? I will appreciate your valuable information, thanks.

Using the iPhone, the USB cable, iTunes and Windows Contacts, sync the iPhone contacts to Windows Contacts. That will save them there. They are also included in the iPhone backup made in iTunes, and if you use iCloud.
I'm sorry, I missed the calendar part the first time I looked. For calendar, you need a supported application on the computer (Outlook) or if you use iCloud, you can use the iCloud contacts and calendar app to sync.

  • How to Uninstall Leopard Upgrade and go back to Tiger

I would like to go back to Tiger and was wondering how to uninstall the Leopard upgrade without having to do a full reformat. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

First, welcome to the Apple boards.
Backup what you have because it probably contains things from the original update you want to keep - network settings, passwords, etc. A bootable clone is your best bet - and test it out.
Then you need to format your HD (full, not quick) with the Leopard DVD and then reboot with the Tiger CD and install it. I am not sure how much you can migrate "downwards" from the Leopard backup, but some things will probably come along OK. Not sure about mail since it was converted by Leopard - will it unconvert? Don't know.
I have read of some who tried to simply install Tiger over Leopard but the results were less than great. You can try it once you have that clone backup, because you won't be losing anything.
I would suggest unplugging the clone during the erase and install process until you get to the migration point.

I have a brand new Leopard based MacBook Pro that I need to revert to its previous cat form of Tiger. Would you mind walking me through it? I have Tiger disks that came with another MacBook Pro so those should have all of the machine specific items I will need. As I understand this, I start the computer from the included Leopard disk and do a full format. (I noticed that there is a new partition style named GUID Partition, is this Leopard only?) Next, I load in my Tiger disks and install from those? I do not need to do any system backups as I have no information on this computer as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Brian

  • Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgrade and connected my printer to it too, and realized I have no sound anymore

Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgade and connected my printer too, and realized I have lost sound!   Can anyone help?

In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade?  If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8.  These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded.   You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too.

  • Reintsall of osx and loss of files

In a fit of inspiration I decided to clean up my daughter's iBook and while trying to get to disk utility ended up with an upgrade of OSX 10.2 getting put on the iBook.
I attempted to exactly duplicate her userID and password after the install but am not seeing any of the old files or apps. Have I committed an unrecoverable error?
If not any advice appreciated? Thanks

Ali, There are two users - the first is Katherine Sullivan, the second is Katie Sullivan - both are admins. The first was set up after the upgrade/install. The second to mirror the user that existed prior to the install/upgrade.
In the first user accessed via Macintosh HD - users; there are four files. The first is DELETED USERS - KATIESULLIVAN - SHARED and KATHERINESULLIVAN with the house. In KATHERINESULLIVAN are DESKTOP - DOCUMENTS - LIBRARY - MOVIES - MUSIC - PICTURES - PUBLIC - SITES. In DELETED USERS is a file katherinesullivan.dmg. In the file katiesullivan are the files: DESKTOP - DOCUMENTS - LIBRARY - MOVIES -MUSIC -PICTURES - PUBLIC - SITES. All with the exception of DESKTOP - PUBLIC and SITES are locked with insufficient privileges to open. When I change the privileges to open they are empty.
In the second user accessed via Macintosh HD - users; there are four files. The first is DELETED USERS - KATHERINESULLIVAN - SHARED and KATIESULLIVAN with the house. In the KATIESULLIVAN are DESKTOP - DOCUMENTS - LIBRARY - MOVIES - MUSIC - PICTURES - PUBLIC - SITES. All are unlocked, however when you click on DESKTOP you recieve a failed due to privileges message. When I change the privilege it opens but there are no files. The LIBRARY folder contains files, but there is nothing in them. (ASSISTANTS - AUDIO - CACHES - COLORPICKERS ... SCREEN SAVERS - SOUNDS; 15 FILES TOTAL) The PUBLIC file contains DROP BOX and the SITES file contains a folder IMAGES and the file INDEX.HTML
I believe this everything. Thanks for your continued efforts to resolve this.

  • Files transfer to Windows PC

I have a power PC with system7 installed. I wonna transfer all data files to a windows PC. And I have some Aldus Page Maker files in there and I wonna convert them to the Adobe PM. How can I do this. I am a newbie for the MAC. Please help me. My email is ruwan.alahakoon (at) yahoo (dot) com

There are several ways to do this.
Some of the PowerPC Macs had built-in Ethernet when delivered. See also the technical specifications. An external AAUI to RJ-45 transceiver may or may not be needed, depending upon the Mac in question. If you wish to use Ethernet, please post back with additional information about the computer model.
All PowerPC models should have an operating system with PC Exchange (look for it in the Control Panels folder). This means that PC-formatted floppies can be used for transfers. However, the file size limit will be somewhere around 1.3 MB.
You could connect a MiniDIN-8 serial port (Modem Port) on the Mac to a DB-9 serial port of a PC by combining a Macintosh hardware handshake modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) with a standard PC null-modem cable (DB-25F to DB-9F). A terminal emulation program with file transfer capabilities (such as the communications section of ClarisWorks on the Mac and HyperTerminal on the PC) is used on each computer.
If both computers have a modem, transfers via terminal emulation software can be carried out over the public telephone network instead (two lines required, one for the Mac and one for the PC).
A variant would be a direct modem-to-modem connection (in principle as in KB article # 22229.
With a modem for the Mac, and Internet software (if not already on the hard disk, it is not difficult to install a couple of small programs), you could use e.g. email for transfers.
The transport of an unprotected Macintosh file to a PC will result in loss (or damage) of the resource fork (that is, one of the Mac file parts). The remaining data fork is, usually, sufficient for documents. Check the Save as dialogue on the sending Mac and compare this to the Open dialogue of the receiving PC. Try to find a "common denominator" file format.

  • File transfer from windows

I used the migration assistant to transfer fils from my Windows pc to my new MacBook Pro, but the transferred files only show up in a new user created by the assistant I supose and I cannot access them from my user account. Can anybody tell me how to transfer them to my user account or access them from my user account ?

youreally, really need to back up and learn baics about computers.
I'm not trying to be difficult, but to make your life easier. Tough love or whatever.
Every computer on the planet has a file system that uses the analogy of folders inside folders.
Start on your desktop, double click your hard drive.  Double click on users. Then on your user folder (generally yourname or whatever you log in with) then on documents.  You will see your document files (but not, for example, musci or videos - those are in music and videos, and not all the support files for mail, etc.
But the bottom line is you really must know where your stuff is, or, if you prefer not to, call a service to come and help you (at $XXX per visit).
My bigger concern is that you'll never find all those support files like mail settings, bookmarks, etc. that migration assistant should have brought over.  I would tend to delete the user that was created, and start over, carefulyl following the instructions to get them to YOUR user folder.
All your stuff on a mac is in /users/you
on a PC its in /users (or is it user files?)/you (fancy that)
Explaining every step here is asking too much, really, for either of us.

  • Large file transfer for windows computer

i made an hd-movie which size is about 6 gb and would like to give copies to friends with windows computers. i have an external drive with a fat 32 partition, but it's not possible to copy the file on this drive, i think the limit is about 4 gb with fat 32 formatted disks. any idea how to manage this?
one of my employees has a mac with windows running on it, can he copy the file for me? the external drive has two partitions, one fat 32 an one os journaled, is windows running on a mac able to read an os journaled disc and copy the file on the fat 32 partition?

If you don't know, then look something up.
exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table, also sometimes referred to as FAT64) is a proprietary, patent-pending[2] file system suited especially for USB flash drives,[citation needed]
(EXtended File Allocation Table) An enhanced version of the FAT file system from Microsoft that uses less overhead than NTFS. It extends the maximum file size of 4GB in FAT32 to virtually unlimited.

As to NTFS being 'experimental' in which universe is that in? Mac NTFS drivers are sold by major companies for over 3 yrs and MacFUSE (a well respected developer of considerable talent and knowledge of operating systems I might add).

  • IMac and Moto Razor file transfer

Ok i wasn't to shure on were I should have posted this but here it goes. I have a iMac G3 400 10.3.9 and a recently upgraded my cell to a V3R Razor . Bluetoothing video files is not problem ( I have about 3 hrs of Bugs Bunny and Family Guy on it in MPG4 plays great too when I'm at lunch or on break ) My question is this when I use the USB to download my video files on my phone another file is placed on it with it ( it's like only 80 bytes but still it shows up in the menu and if I try to delet it I can't threw the phone ) It only comes when I download useing the USB , if I bluetooth it no extra file is placed on it . Also when I use the bluetooth menue to search the files on the phone I see the extra files and can't delet them either . If I use the USB the don't show up only in bluetooth and on the phone can you see the extera files . Now here is the kicker when I plug it into the USB on my Windoze pc they show up and I can delet the extra files with no problem . Any ideas??? Bluetooth transfer is 30kb a second usb is much faster .

I am certainly no expert but I think the extra files are just OS X system files the phone and the Windows computer don't recognise, so they show them as these extra files. When I attach various USB sticks I have to my Windows 98SE PC (it's faster than Vista lol) the same happens. My guess is that, when attached via USB, your mobile phone is just seen as a "volume" and appears on the desk top as such, so the Mac puts system files on it, DS store etc. but if you connect to your mobile with Bluetooth it does n't appear as a volume as you're just making a mutual exchange device to device. Personnally I am no longer bothered by the extra files I see when attaching my USB sticks to a PC, if I delete them on the PC they are recreated when it's been on a Mac again. The PC can't see the colour coding I use either but I keep on colouring files anyway.... In either case I would n't worry, Windows have similar system files too, hidden by default on PC and Mac, they take up little space, you have to choose between the speed of USB and "tidiness" of Bluetooth. That's my guess anyway

  • I installed Office:mac 2011 on my new iMac running 10.8.3 and discovoed my file transfer from my old macbook installed Office:mac 2088. Now I have both installed and none of the office apps work - I keep getting the same error message

I recently purchased an iMac to replace my 2008 macbook.
I used migration assitant to transfer all of my macbook files to the iMac. I noticed that I had the old 2008 version of Office:mac 2008 on the iMac and decided to install Office:mac 2011 which installed successfully.
However, now I can't open excel or word or powwerpoint now using either 2008 or 2011.... I just get an error message saying there was an error and the app had to close. It offers to send a report to Microsoft.
I tried moving Office:mac 2008 to trash but this didn't resolve the issue.
Can anyone help (I am not a really sohpisticated user so be gentle)
    Thanks Dave

  • What is the best way I should restore or start over after a complete meltdown and loss of files?

In May I moved all of my itunes content (movies, music, podcasts, app, books) to a networked attached storage device.  Long story short, recently I had problems with some content missing/being deleted.  Lacie, the hard drive mfg, told me the public share had become corrupted and I needed to delete it and start over.  Last night I appeared to have had a complete meltdown with the loss of most of my files, over 500gb of stuff.
Luckily it's backed up (but one backup is now about 2 weeks old) and it's going to take about 2 days to restore.  I have it restoring to my desktop folder on my imac.  I'm concerned about all of the itunes library folders and stuff that are out there.  I'd ultimately like to get it restored back to the external hard drive.
What is the best method?  I'm restoring just the content, not the various library files.  Should I uninstall Itunes and re-install it to try to start fresh, or just re-add the content?
I've already wasted a lot of time on this and I'm just looking to avoid more problems.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Anyone help with this?
I am restoring over 500gb to my local drive after a NAS was corrupted.  I'm very hesitant about putting stuff back out on the network drive again so i guess I may keep it on my local hard drive.  Currently, when I open itunes it has all of my old files remembered (just with exclamation points) and my playlists.  I'd love to keep that intact but point itunes to the correct files in a new location.
Is it as simple as going to preferences and changing the location of the itunes folder once I have it in place?

  • Snow Leopard Upgrade and ICal / CalDav access

I've upgraded half of the computers in the office to Snow Leopard only to find that now upgraded users cannot change the calendars. (problem.)
Getting "Only calendar admin and delegates with permission can make changes"... so no problem right? Just set up delegation on the server... well the version of CalDav we're using doesn't support delegation.
Shouldn't ICal recognize a server that doesn't support delegation instead of making the calendar read-only for everyone since it is impossible to create a delegate?
    Solutions?

Confirmed that iCal 4.0 (packaged with Snow Leopard) breaks when used with the Cosmo CalDAV server (http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/CosmoDevelopmentHome). Before in iCal 3.x it worked fine. When attempting to update a calendar I now get the message:
"You can't change events or to do items in the $calendar calendar."
I'd encourage Apple to test iCal with other popular CalDAV servers before releasing it as it is supposed to be compatible with open standards.

I tried to load in my ARD (Version 2) to my Powerbook that now runs the Leopard OS. It loads in but every time I try and run it, the program asks for my administrator password - then uploads some files and says the program is installed. I click "okay" and then ARD shuts down. This is a constant loop that won't let me run the program.
Any ideas why this is happening?
