Leopard Upgrade Problem with Mail

I'm trying to upgrade an iMac G5 to Leopard, but am having problems with the mail installation. Leopard is running fine on the machine, but is getting hung up on the initial opening of the Mail application. A window pops up saying "preparing to import messages." I've tried fixing permissions using the utility application, to no effect. I seem to remember this being a problem when Leopard was first released, but I can't find any info addressing the issue.
Thanks,
S.

Are you saying that the system hangs at "preparing ..." and does not proceed?

  • Problems with Mail after upgrading to MAC OS10 version 10.6.8

I upgraded to MAC OS10 version 10.6.8 about ten days ago, and have since had lots of problems with mail. Since I upgraded, I have downloaded several software updates, including one for improving the general softeware system of Leopard.  Since this morning, I no longer have the Mail icon in the dock and when I try to open it in Applications a window comes up saying:
'You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549)
Can I download a version that I can use with this Mac, and can anybody give me the site where I can find this. I have tried without success

You should consider downloading the 10.6.8 combo updater and applying it again.

  • Problems with mail after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hello,
since I upgraded to Mavericks, I have problems with Mail.
The mail app doesn't retrieve any mail from my email servers. IMAP or POP or exchange mail no longer work.
I have these problems on my iMac and my MBP.
The strangest thing is that I have no more new emails in my icloud account since the upgrade. Not only does mail not retrieve the emails but I even can't see any new mail online.
On my iphone with iOs7 the mails are retrieved, except of course the mails from the icloud account.
Has anybody a solution at hand?
    Thanks

this might help with the gmail problem: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/?viewall=true

  • Problems with Mail after upgrading to 10.9.1

I am running into problems with Mail after installing 10.9.1. I had NO problems with Mail prior to this update.
Problems I have encountered so far are:
    - I don't receive some e-mails on my Gmail account.
    - I have sent e-mails that supposedly got "sent" but do not show up in my Sent box both on mail and on web Gmail. My Outbox is empty also.
Has anyone encountered the same problems and found a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes Paul I have, but no solution. I cannot send email. My ISP uses a smtp mail server for sending and It will not log in. Have had ISP on phone and checked all settings. Can only put it down to Mavericks.
It worked OK for a week after upgrading then stopped. So now having to use web mail to send email.
Strange thing is I receive mail OK, just cant send.

  • Problems with Mail and Safari

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.11 and am having some consistent problems with Mail and Safari on my MacPro Dual 2.66. Here they are:
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, selecting these applications from the dock no longer opens the application (or a new window if already opened), but causes them to be revealed in the finder.
In Safari, when this problem occurs, another symptom seems to be that new windows will ONLY open in a new tab, even though I have preferences set to open links in a new window. If I click on a bookmark within a folder in the bookmark toolbar, Safari will open ALL the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs!!
In Mail, when I open my Inbox, clicking on various messages will highlight (in blue) ALL the messages I'm clicking on, instead of simply displaying the highlighted message in the reader.
The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot my machine, which is getting to be a total drag, especially since this seems to happen fairly often.
One other thing that may be related- if my screen saver is running, and I move the mouse to go to an active screen, the computer will "freeze." It stays like this indefinitely- I figured out that if I press the button on the machine itself it will go to sleep, and I can wake it up and then everything is fine, but I don't understand what's going on.
I have tried using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, and have used OnyX to clean out my system cache and aall sorts of other stuff, but to no avail.
Is anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm starting to get really frustrated. Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Scott,
I had posted earlier that I had Flash payer problems and then QuickTime and PDF preview problems too, on my Intel PowerMac. I could not figure out what the problem was, because fixing permissions and moving plugins did not work. Console indicated that the Quicktime components were not found, with the problem in a webkit pref file somewhere (nil field value). Anyway, I bailed and reinstalled Leopard from a 10.5.0 DVD, and then updated using the combo updater to 10.5.3. Everything worked. Then, after the 'Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 1', it all broke again. This time, repairing permissions resulted in:
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/lib/jvm.cfg", should be 0, user is 95.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Libraries/classlist" , should be 0, user is 95.
Now it all works again. This is obviously a flaw with the Java update, and also somehow Disk Utility did not find it earlier. Anyway, take a look at reverting the Java update, or manually changing user for those files (I suppose user 0 is root, but maybe it is nobody).
    Obscure....

  • Problems with Mail...

Initially, the problem started when why wife said that her e-mails disappeared.  I looked at her screen and saw that there was a warning triangle next to the Mailboxes' Inbox in the upper left corner of the Mail app.  I thought it odd that there was no list of e-mails in the right side of the window, but one of her mailboxes had a flag with the number 15, indicating that there were 15 messages, but there was "invisible".
So, I took at look at her iCloud account's preferences and tried to change the Port to 993, but I kept getting an error message about the incoming path could not be empty...
I then went to start Googling similar themes and reading the discussions here.  Nothing seems to help me, but somehow, I finally got Mail to work...
First off, IF you're using OS X 10.8.2 (Mtn. Lion) and Mail (6.2), the com.apple.mail.plist is NOT in the "usual" expected location.  Thanks poster Thomas A Reed, the com.apple.mail.plist can be found here:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
This was a BIG help.  But in my situation, the com.apple.mail.plist file was not there.  Instead, I found "com.apple.mail.lockedfile".  But even after I deleted it, Mail still wasn't working currently.
So, I decided to go back in time.  Thankfully, Time Machine does come handy at times.  I was able to get the com.apple.mail.plist file in Time Machine from a date prior to the problem.  But even this "new" plist file didn't help.
So, be it "voodoo magic" or just that God was on my side, I tried a couple of other things...
First, I took the mailbox offline (Mail's Mailbox menu > Take All Accounts Offline).  As I even tried taking things offline, but going back online didn't initially help.  But I took it offline again.
I then tried going back to into the Account preferences (Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information) and changed Alias to icloud.com, instead of mac.com or me.com, and typed in the correct password.  I made sure that the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) was "smtp.mail.me.com".  I went into Advanced and typed "imap.mail.me.com", made sure that Port was "993", checked Use SSL, and Authentication to Password.
I click to to another of Mail's preferences to bring up the Save dialog.  And when I clicked Save, it did not click.  It saved for the first time.  No error message at all.  A positive sign!
So, I then when to Mail's Window menu and selected Activity and when I selected to Take All Accounts Online, I could see that everything was working!  Yeah! Mail was now working as expected.  It was an awesome sight!
Now, please remember that these are my observations.  May this be a hopeful guide to your situation.  I cannot swear that this is THE solution, but something worked for me.  Like I said, maybe God was smiling on me as the problem with Mail was on my wife's MacBook Air.  So, Mail is now working, I'm happy and ultimately, my wife will be happy now that she can use her Mac like she expects it to work...

I have completley reinstalled the OS, starting from the Software reinstall disk, and did all the upgrades to Tiger, and am still having the problem.
My daughter didn't use Mail, as I didn't get around to setting up an account for her yet.
I just used Sync to try to fix it, by importing all my settings, but still no go.

  • Anyone else having problems with Mail after installing Mountain Lion?

Since upgrading to mountain lion, I have had a number of problems with Mail.  At the moment, it is predominantly when my desktop imac goes to sleep overnight. In the morning, it will not receive mail. The app will not close, so I force quit it.  Trying to reopen Mail after that just does not happen, so I have to restart my machine to get things going again. Any tips?

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Having connection problems with Mail after installing 10.9.4

I upgraded to 10.9.4 a few days ago, and ever since, I've been having connection problems with Mail. First, it stops downloading new mail automatically and second, it won't send any of my messages. When I try to send, I get a message that it is unable to connect.
Quitting Mail and restarting it seems to clear the problem, but then it happens again, maybe an hour or two later.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Problems with Mail since update Yosemite

    Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 13" from approx. Dec. 2010.
I made last weekend the update to Yosemite. Since then the Mail.app does not work correct anymore. I can send mails and I can get mails from my webmail server if Mail.app is open. When I start Mail.app new I can not get the incoming mails from the webmail server. Mail.app does not download the incoming mails arrived in the meantime as the Mail.app was closed from the webmail server. I tried to create the mail account new but that did not work. I can not create a new mail account either.
Now I tried to create a new main account and I installed one of my mail account. there. In this new main account the mail.app is working well again and got all mails downloaded.
So it looks that during the update of Yosemite my existing main account got an error.
I could work now on the new account. But how can I bring all adjustments and data's out of the existing account into the new account? Is this possible to do?
Or how can I fix the existing account that has an error? Do I have to go back to Mavericks again? And how can I go back to mavericks like it was before the update to Yosemite?
Hope I can get some answers that would help me in this case.
    Thank's in advance!
    Reto

Here is my list of problems with Mail since upgrading to Yosemite (all was working just fine before) ...
    [MacBook Pro, Retina 13", late 2013, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB, 500GB running OS X Yosemite 10.10]
Mail is very slow (seems to be a memory leak?)
Read emails not being marked as read (sporadic - sometimes it works just fine)
Deleted emails not being deleted (sporadic - sometimes it works just fine)
When replying to a message, does not close original message (sporadic - sometimes it works just fine)
When dragging a message to a folder cannot scroll up (can scroll down)
Message is sometimes blank (but the same message opened fine previously or later)
Message is sometimes one line of text and it is not possible to easily scroll horizontally to read the message (two finger side swipe on trackpad works but not Magic Mouse ... easiest way to read emails is to forward or reply)
Calendar invite messages not closing or being deleted when invite RSVP is completed
I should roll back my OS but this is a real hassle so I am hoping for Apple to submit an update to Yosemite or Mail & Calendar.
Has anyone else had any of the above problems? Anyone got any temp solutions until updates come from Apple? Perhaps changing settings can resolve some of the above issues - I have tried but failed.

  • Connection problems with Mail 6.2

Is anyone else having connection problems with Mail 6.2? I'm running OSX 10.8.2 and Mail 6.2 (1499)?
When Mail starts all my mailboxes connect to their respective servers (GMail, iCloud and an ISP). IMAP and SMTP connections are all good and mails can be sent and received. But then............ after a while (I've not timed it so I don't know exactly but say 20 to 30 mins) the connections begin to drop. First the SMTP connections to the ISP go then the SMTP ones to GMail then iCloud, then the IMAP connections drop. All connection settings are correct (it was working remember) and using the same connection settings on my iPhone everythig works just fine, but the Connection Doctor (Or whatever it's called) tells me that the mail account can't connect to the network/IMAP/SMTP server and asks me to check my connection settings. The only way to get it to work is to close Mail and restart it, whereupon everything is hunky dory for the next 20 to 30 mins.
As it's happening to all my mail accounts including Apple's own iCloud server I don't think it's a mail server issue. As I have internet connectivity it's not a network connection issue in that sense. As it was connected but then drops the connection I'm assuming that Mail is sending something it shouldn't to the respective server when it tries to connect to send and receive mails.
Everything was just fine until about a week ago and I didn't do any s/ware upgrades.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues or does anyone have any help they can offer to fix it? It's kinda tedious to keep closing and starting the Mail App.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes after updating to 10.5.6

    Hi all,
after installing 10.5.6 I have problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes.
The time to open mails, websides and iTunes store is increasing dramatically since the update. If I open a webside parallel with Safari and Firefox, Safari needs minimum 15 times longer to open the complete side. Mails containing HTML-code also needs a long time to be opened. Tha same Problem with iTunes store. Connecting to the Store costs at least 30 - 40 seconds. And unfortunately for every iTunes store side I open. Its terrible
Any idea or workaroung to solve that problem?
    Regards
    Michael

First, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and then restart.
I installed the 10.5.6 Combo update. Sometimes things get "lost in the translation" when you use Software Update depending on your installation. Perhaps you can download 10.5.6 Combo from the website and install it from your desktop.

  • Problem with mail for exchange after update on E72...

    Hi everyone,
I updated Nokia E-mail to ver 3.9 on E72. Now I am facing  a problem with mail for exchange. I have configured gmail on mail for exchange. I recieve a warning that "unable to sync contact administrator if problem persist". It started to pop up just after the update was over and is very frustrating. Even previously i used to recieve mails instantly but now it generally takes half an hour for me to recieve them. I deleted and created mail for exchange several times but to no avail.
Also i am not able to automatically recieve mails other emails which i have configured. every time I have to manually download them everytime.
Can anybody suggest a way out.
    Thanks
    Anil

It could be a problem if you're using your network's connections...
I was on a Pay & Go tariff with o2 some time ago, and needed secure connections for various things, o2 told me they didn't provide secure connections on Pay & Go tariffs...
Could be worth checking with them to make sure it's supported.

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.
