Leopard vs PC server

We are a team of 10 graphic designer working on a PC network
I've installed leopard on my computer only, to make sure it's stable...
Answer is NO, not yet for the kind of work we do : pre-press, joggling with many client and many fonts...
Here's my problems
FONTS PROBLEM at opening: conflict with system font, should I disable or remove this font...
Where do I remove it ? User-computer-system-suitcase fusion? Anywhere else?
SHARING documents on the SERVER
All illustrator document are .exe, can't dble-click to open need to open by application
Cannot copy document on the server : not sufficient privilege
Cannot save .eps on the server?
Do we really need to put extension?
Is there any protocol I need to do to make my computer "talk" to my server without any problem?

I'm back with 10.4.10
Too much unsolved problem with Leopard
Let me know when all problem are fixed with a windows server and I'll be happy to work with it again!

  • Possible to change color depth for Leopard's VNC server?

I think it is very nice to include vnc server right into Leopard. But one problem, it seems it will only accept connection from clients when it is set to use full colors. This is painfully slow over WAN, any way to change the requirement from the server end?

Possible to change color depth for Leopard's VNC server?
Yes you can modify your screen sharing application so that you can adjust the colour depth. However you need to issue a command in the terminal to get this to work.

  • Sharepoint migration across to Leopard 10.5 server

I'm currently running an Xserve Dual G5 and Apple 3.7 TB RAID which contains all the sharepoints etc. It's currently running 10.4.10 and am about to upgrade it to Leopard 10.5 server. My question is: Are the sharepoints retained in the upgrade, or do I have to re-configure quite a complex sharepoint setup? I hope this not the case, surely apple wouldn't be that destructive in a upgrade path. I can't seem to find any clear answer to this question.
Any answers would be much appreciated.

Yes, it's entirely possible. Check the logs for your user's connection - it may indicate whether the problem is one of authentication (authentication failed messages) or network (no activity at all).

    Thanks in advance.

Can I install Mac OS X Leopard (not the server version) on a Xserve
Yes, but some functions may not work as intended. See here for some information; all Mac OS X 10.5 installations are universal binary.
and run BootCamp (to use Windows)
Probably not. Use a program such as Parallels Desktop.

  • Cannot login to network account (leopard client and server)

Up until now, I have used local accounts on my leopard server. I want to start experimenting with OD prior to implementing. I created a new user account in the /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 domain, and have bound my leopard client to the server using directory utility. On the login screen, "Network Accounts Available" has a green button to the left of it. When I try and login to the server account, the login window just shakes. At first, I could enter the password and then it would prompt me for a new password. Trying to enter a new password would not allow me to login. I went back to server admin and disabled the "require new password" setting, (as well as the other good security policies)...
I have also reset the password in WGM, and made sure to disable all the security stuff there too...
Lastly, I have deleted the server in directory utility, rebooted, then added it back in, and rebooted again...
I still cannot login to the server account, the login screen just shakes
Does anyone have an idea of what settings and or logs I can check to try and narrow down what is going on?
    Thanks in advance....

to close out the thread, I have working dns on my network, but I did not have dns enabled on my server. I enabled the dns service and entered just the info for my server, then assigned my server and client to use the server's ip addy as the primary dns server. Next, I created the home directory.
Once both steps were done, I was able to log in from my client to my server based account...
FYI-I found a document on afp548.com called "leopard server: advanced setup, rsync backup and automated reporting" that walks you right thru the process...Here is the link, it's a very useful doc....

  • Unable to bind MacBook Pro (running 10.6 - Snow Leopard ) to Windows Server 2003 domain

Hi there, I've been working on this problem for a few hours now (and a few hours last Thursday) and don't feel I'm getting anywhere, so I'm reaching out for help....
My organisation has just purchased a new MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) and as a Technical Support Engineer I have been asked to configure it for an end user.
I am currently trying to join it to our corporate domain, which is a Windows Server 2003 domain operating at the Windows Server 2003 Native domain functional level.
The MacBook is configured to use DHCP, and has been assigned valid IP address, DNS servers etc by the DHCP server. It can resolve all names on our network, including the names of our domain controllers. When I use nslookup to resolve the name of the domain "my_domain.local" it returns a list of DC's on the domain, which would indicate to me that name resolution is working perfectly. It is using our primary DNS server, 'Ponus' to resolve these names - Ponus is also the Domain Controller in this site.
To attempt to join the MacBook to the domain I have created a computer account for it on the domain, in the Computers container. I have gone into System/Library/Core Services and run the Directory Utility.
In the directory Utility I have ticked Active Directory and clicked on it to edit. The 'Forest' field is greyed out and set to 'Automatic', in the 'Domain' field I have entered my_domain.local, which is the FQDN of my domain. I click Bind and when prompted enter my Domain Admin username and password (in the 'Create Computer Account in:' field it displays correctly as CN=Computers,DC=my_domain,DC=local.)
When I click OK I get the message: Invalid domain. An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com).
I have attempted writing the domain as my_domain.local, my_domain.local., MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL and MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL. but I get the same error each time. I have checked and rechecked DNS is resolving OK, and cannot see why it cannot find the Domain and Forest from the FQDN that I am entering. Even so I tried creating records in the hosts file on the MacBook to point to the main Domain Controller at this site (Ponus) but this didn't change anything.
I have seen a few people report the same issue online but the responses tend to fizzle out before anyone gets to the bottom of it. I have seen some indication that people with an understore (_) in their domain name, or with a .local domain name may experience issues with joining Mac hosts, however these details are very vague and if true there must be a workaround.
If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, I'm running out of time to complete this work and have run out of things to try.
I have an inkling that this is due to the Mac for some reason not reading the SRV records for the DCs and LDAP in DNS, or to do with the Mac looking only at one SRV record (ie. there is one for a new DC that we haven't deployed yet), not being able to reach this and giving up, but I'm clutching at straws really with my limited knowledge of the Macs process for joining the domain.
    Many many thanks,

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

    Hi
It's easy enough to 'connect' any version of OS X Server to any other version of OS X Server. Use the Join button in the Users & Groups Preferences Pane. Alternatively use the Directory Utility itself.
You seem to be misunderstanding what an Open Directory Master and Replica are? They are not what I think you think they are. They are not a 'back-up' of each other if you're providing more than the shared Directory Service.
An OD Replica maintains a read-only copy of the LDAP Database (Usernames, Passwords and Policies etc) that's stored on the OD Master and nothing more. If the Master was to go offline for any reason the Replica can be quickly promoted to a Master Role and continue to provide information for the shared directory. This assumes it has easy and quick access to the Volume storing networked home folders? The LDAP Database in that case would then become writable. Later on and whenever you've fixed the problem with the old Master it can quickly be demoted and made a Replica of the now new Master.
Although this is for 10.6 Server (it is nevertheless still applicable) everything you need to know about Master and Replica relationships is here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/OpenDirAdmin_v10.6.pdf
    Page 55 onwards.
    From Page 64:
"The Open Directory master and its replicas must use the same version of Mac OS X Server. . ."
If your OD Master is also providing Mail, Calendar and Contact Services then none of these will be replicated. You will have to maintain a backup of these databases yourself using whatever method you deem fit for your needs.

  • MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard and Exchange Server

My wife is considering a MacBook Pro for her business (we have one at home). At her work they have Exchange Server. With our home MacBook Pro I have been able to connect to her Exchange server through Entourage. (however I think her Exchange server is version 4 and not 7). Anyway, we are getting mail, contacts and her calendar through Exchange but we are not getting shared calendars and I don't know how to access her files on the Exchange server. I really want her to buy a MacBook but we need to make sure that shared calendars and file sharing works. Can someone inform me about this?
Her company is upgrading to Exchange server 7 in December and I know that Snow Leopard allows Exchange to work through Mail, Address Book and iCal. Again, I need to know if calendar sharing and file sharing can work. Thanks.

    Hello,
Wondering if you had any luck getting this issue resolved (I have the exact same question).
    Thanks,

  • Snow Leopard's VNC server - does it work?

    Hi,
Question 1: Can you confirm if the VNC server in Snow Leopard works out of the box, once Screen Sharing and the VNC password are set up in Preferences? I am trying to connect from RealVNC from Windows XP.
Question 2: Does anyone have any idea how to reliably get an L2TP VPN working from Snow Leopard over a 3G connection? If I can get a working answer to Q2, then I don't care about Q1.
    The Back-Story...
I am trying to get access to my iMac desktop through a VPN running over 3G. I would rather use dial-up because it is easier and quicker (in that by the time I get this mess running I could have finished my life's work and retired) but something inside keeps saying that it should all Just Work.
For those who are amused by the misfortune of others, the VPN connects from my Snow Leopard laptop, but it will not pass traffic. No pings, no nothing. I tried to add a route sending all 192.168 traffic down the hose, but my reward was the grey curtain of death and an OS X reboot.
Anyway, I have given up on the whole 3G thing from Snow Leopard - it is so unpredictable that it gets embarrassing when other (Windows) people are looking on.
However, my macbook has a copy of Windows XP running in Fusion. It makes me feel queasy to even think this, but I get nostalgic for the networking in windows - it was a pain at the time, but now it looks positively shiny.)
I get it to take over the 3G usb thingo, and it creates a VPN first time, and I can access the web server on the iMac through it. I could probably even get it to share files if I spent half a day on it (Oh, right... I forgot - It Just Works... barely.) However, what I need to be able to do is see the iMac screen from the laptop. If the **** routing would work, I could use Apple's Screen Sharing, but it doesn't so I have to use VNC from the Windows VM.
Now I am trying to get VNC to connect from Windows to the iMac. This Just Works too... I have downloaded the latest version of realVNC (the free version) and installed it into Windows on the laptop. I have activated Screen Sharing in Preferences on the iMac, and set a VNC password.
When I try to connect using RealVNC, I enter the host name, I get another window asking for the password, then when I hit Enter, I get a bright flash of dark as VNC seems to open a screen window then ka-foopa - it is gone. In Task Manager, the client has disappeared.
I have seen a lot of messages doing a lot of discussion about this, and it does not look good. If I wanted to muck about with stuff just for the fun of it, I could have saved a lot of dough and switched to Linux.
It is nearly 2011, and this stuff should all be working by now - VPN and VNC have been around for a decade and it still needs witchcraft to get it to work. Why is that?

Mr Hoffman, you are right about the kernel fault it gives me the willies.
    _Client software and the dongle_
The dongle is a Sierra Wireless USB 308 branded as Bigpond Elite 21 (because I am an elite kinda guy) and it has been working well under many circumstances for some time. There is a connection app that is part of the OS X support kit for the USB 308 device.
For the VPN, I am using OS X's network prefs. The dong turns up in NetPrefs' connection list as USB 308. To make the connection, I start the connection app and it dials and logs into the network.
Also, I can use it to successfully connect to other VPNs, just not this one so it mostly works.
I have called the carrier's support desk and they don't provide free support for network apps. However, they do have a paid support product (Telstra Plus) which charges $59 if they solve your problem. I called them and they were very sympathetic until they heard "Mac" but bravely soldiered on until they completely lost interest when I mentioned "VPN".
    _Active Connections_
According to Network Prefs, the only active connection is the USB 308, and the IP address it is assigned is 124.183.blah. The DNS server addresses automatically set by the connection are 61.something. There is no indication of a 192.168.1 network other than at the target.
Output from netstat -rn on the client machine indicates that the only active networks are en2 (the USB 308) and lo0. There are no 192.168 routes listed in the routing table.
    L2TP
We know the L2TP is working (and that the carrier network supports it) because the windows VM on the MacBook can successfully connect using the identical hardware. The only differences are the client software for the USB 308 and the OS.
    PPTP
We don't use PPTP because (a) Microsoft cooked it up, and (b) L2TP over IPSEC is said to be solidly secure. However I have just taken it for a spin and it is working. So it is a fallback. It can be argued that PPTP must be OK because so many people use it, but you can say that about Windows too, and I won't believe you.
I have installed IPsecuritas (which I like a lot), I have carefully matched the settings in the router with the settings with IPSecuritas, and it still doesn't work. I suspect that IPSec/L2TP is not meant to be used, but rather just created to be admired from a distance.
Of course it could be the router. Any company that calls itself Billion is suspect from the the outset, no?
I will shake their tree and see if they will confess to anything.
    Russ.

  • Leopard client, Tiger server & ACLs

I've been reading many discussions on improper ACL settings due to a Tiger client being upgraded to Leopard. I'm having a similar issue, just a different setting. I'm using a Tiger server and did a fresh install of Leopard on all the clients. Everything so far has worked beautifully for the last few weeks. Today I just having a problem with ACLs that are in place from the Tiger server on a shared drive. For example, if there's an ACL that states a particular group has Full Access to that folder, it seems to work but I still have the "You have custom access" and an "unknown" user in the Get Info in Leopard's Finder. If I remove that ACL and make that group the actual Group of the entire folder, it recognizes that perfectly and I seem to have no problems. (By the way, it only started really becoming an issue with FileMaker Pro DBs. Sometimes they couldn't open, and if they did halfway through they would stop saving.) Anyone have any thoughts on how to manage this. We don't have any particular reasons to upgrade to Leopard server yet, besides potentially this issue, so I'd rather not spend the money if I don't have to.
    Thanks

You could try running the Terminal command recommended by Apple on the client machines:

That might take care of the problem.

  • Sharing files on Leopard in Client Server Application

I have an application that stores the data files for it centrally on my MAC. There are several computers in my network that access it. I updated to Leopard and now the sharing is very slow in connecting and has problems. What is wrong? I have set access rights for the folder and turned on file sharing as well as Windows Sharing for my XP Machines.

What is the application you are talking about?
How is your Mac networked? i.e wired or wireless? what is the speed of your network i.e gigabit or other.
What is the model of the Mac your are using as as server?
fyi A MAC is not the same thing as a Mac.
    MAC=Media Access Control
    Mac=Macintosh.

  • Leopard client, Lion server

    Hello,
It seems that this question is rather common, but I haven't found any answer yet.
I have a old but good powerBook G4, which can't accept Snow Leopard. The best version it can run is Leopard. I purchased a brand new macMini server with Lion server. Can I manage (accounts, home directories,...) my Powerbook G4 with my server ?
    Thanks for your help
    Yours

    Hello,
    Thanks for your help.
I'm always a bit surprised by the lack of compatibility between osx versions that are not really so different in ages.
I used Macintoshs since the early days of Lisa. I think that I can be considered as an Apple fan.
But, if I remember well, OsX is open source based. The open source world is based on transparency and openess. And, even while using a osx server 10.7 (when a Linux one would be sufficient technically, but Apple changes continuously the way clients authentify themselves), I cannot use it with a 10.5 client. Apple MUST clearly learn what upward compatibilty means. A concept that Linux, Windows, and many others apply.
    Best regards

  • NFS: Leopard Client - Tiger Server

We have a 10.4.10 System running as a server for all user accounts. The home directories are exported to the clients via NFS. With Tiger everything works out fine, but I started experimenting with integrating Leopard Clients.
When I try to log in with SSH I get this error +'Could not chdir to home directory /home/user: Input/output error'+
When I try to ls the home, it's empty. I wonder why the mounted home directory appears to be empty?
In former times, one could see the NFS mounts as a link to some automount/static..., in Leopard I miss this. There seems to be some massive changes to the automounter?
    Sorry for the bad english.
    zwitcher

I have a Tiger Server 10.4.11 and have a client on Leopard 10.5.5. I was having the same issue you were having and was getting all question marks when logging in. The issue was resolved after I selected LDAP Mapping "From Server" instead of Open Directory. However, now I have a delay when Authenticating of 20 seconds.

  • Leopard Software Update Server + Client

    Hello,
Now I have to use Mac OS X Tiger Server Software Update Server and OSX Tiger Client.
After installing OS X Tiger Server software update, I turned on the server and on apdaty do I download and have been prepared. OS X Tiger has found his client software update server, and everything worked.
Now I have OS X Leopard and Leopard Server Client.
Purely installed server and client purely installed. The server is running the server software update is downloaded updates. Leopard Client still download updates from the Internet and not from the local network and I do not know where the error. Why in the older version of all work without interference with the terminal and not now? Can someone please help me set the software update server to the client computers may not have anything set up and found this site automatically.
    Thank you
I apologize for my incorrect English

The Tiger systems must have some form of customization. SWU is not an auto-discover service. If you have one of the Tiger systems still available, enter both of these commands and report the results:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
    defaults read /Users/<adminusername>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
Does either of the results return the custom CatalogURL value? If not, then look in NetInfo Manager and look at your MCX values. There may have been a managed preference set for all systems. However, if Tiger systems are not bound that this is not possible unless an niutil command was run to insert the value.
Also, keep in mind that if your Leopard systems are not bound to OD, and you have Apple Remote Desktop, you can use a Send Unix command and hit all of your systems in a matter of seconds. It is really rather trivial.
Also, were your Tiger machines imaged from a DMG or a NetInstall Server? It is possible that the SWU custom address was set in the master image. This is why it appears to "just work."

  • Connect snow leopard to windows server

I try to connect my Mac with Snow Leopard to my work's Windows 2010 server. SMB is activated, no connection possible. Any suggestions?

Most Applications intended to run in that fashion would provide a Mac client, a Windows client and a Server component, designed to interact and keep a Master database on the Server up-to-date. Custom database software could also be written for that environment. Perehaps there are options for your package to be used in that fashion, but it would have to be designed-in from the beginning.
A web Application could also run in that fashion, with only a Web Browser on each computer interfacing to the Server software, which would keep the Master database and allow multiple access over your local Network.
