Leopard Vs. Safari and uninstall of Old OS

I did an archive and install. everything is ok, so now how do I delete Tiger, or is it already deleted? Also I'm working with version 10.5.5 and every time I try to run safari it says it doesnt work with this OS. so I tried downloading the newest version from Apple.com and that says that it "only works with version 10.2.something or later" why cant I install it? what is wrong?

there is Previous systems folder at the top level of your hard drive. the old system is in there. you can delete that folder.

You could be trying to run tiger's version of safari. try opening the one that's sitting in your applications folder. if that doesn't work, reinstall safari from the leopard install DVD and rerun 10.5.5 combo update to bring it up to the current version.
to reinstall it from the DVD, insert the DVD, open it in finder and open Optional installs folder. double-click on optional installs.mpkg and follow the instructions. on the screen where you choose applications to install choose safari.

  • Can i update from Snow leopard to Yosemite and still use old programs?

If I update from Snow leopard (10.6.8) to Yosemite will my old programs work? I'm referring to Freehand MX, Adobe Suite SC2, Microsoft office 2004. I cannot afford to replace ANY of them (I got a Mac when I was diagnosed with Dyslexia while at University so the University bought it all for me).
I have an external harddrive and was routinely backing up my computer however earlier this year it stopped working saying that there asn't enough room ( i though Time Machine deleted old copies?).  I've not very tec savvy at all (and don't underatand how to wipe my external harddrive to start again nor how to set up or use time machine properly).
Please can someone help, explaining in plain English (pretend I'm 90 lol)

I have an external harddrive and was routinely backing up my computer however earlier this year it stopped working saying that there asn't enough room ( i though Time Machine deleted old copies?).  I've not very tec savvy at all (and don't underatand how to wipe my external harddrive to start again nor how to set up or use time machine properly).
You are correct in saying Time Machine will delete old files off of the backend of the backup set. Why this is not happening with your Time machine drive I am not certain, but I have seen this error when, for whatever reason the boot drive was selected as the Time Machine drive
Open System Preferences > Time Machine and be sure the correct drive is selected, If not then change the selection to the correct drive.
    STOP
Otherwise, since you say you are not very tech savvy I am assuming you do not have any third party volume repair utilities and since we do not know why your drive is full rather than deleting files off of the back of the set you want to take extra precautions to be as sure as possible the Time Machine drive is healthy. So I am going to recommend an extra step in the process. I am also assuming your Time Machine drive is attached to your Mac with either a USB or Firewire interface — this will not work for network drives.
Open Disk Utility — you will find it in /Applications/Utilities on your Mac hard drive
Select the Time Machine volume and click on the Erase tab
The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
You can change the name of the drive if you want
Click on the Security Options button and move the slider one notch to the right
Click on the Erase button — this will erase the drive and write zeros to every sector on the drive which should remap any bad sectors to the spare sectors on the drive but it will take some time, so don't get anxious.
Assuming there are no errors when Disk Utility completes close it
Open System Preferences > Time Machine and reselect the Time Machine drive.
You Mac will then start a new Time Machine backup set. This may take several hours depending on the speed of your Mac the speed of the connection to the Time Machine drive and the speed of the Time Machine drive itself.

  • Why won't my safari and huffingtonpost slideshows load?

I try loading periodically the slideshow on Huffingtonpost.com but it does not load with Safari. Please advise.

    Hi...
The slideshows require the Flash plugin...  try troubleshooting.
    Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the old plugin first.
Then launch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

  • I have an Imac OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Safari crashes each time I try to print.

my operating system 10.6.8 was not listed.  Snow Leopard
My Safari and Firefox "crash" every time I try to print. This just started yesterday. Will not print and closes with a "crash report"

You can download a trial version of Data Rescue 4, then run it to see if it can find anything on the drive. If it looks like it can salvage a fair amount, you can buy it and run it.
However, it's possible that the enclosure itself or the cable is bad. Try it with another cable. You could open the enclosure, and remove the drive in order to install it in another enclosure or dock. You'll need another enclosure or a dock, obviously, if you want to test this possibility.

I upgraded from snow leopard to mavericks only to find that my backup files of all my CS3 indesign, illustrator, photoshop wo't run, how do I uninstall mavericks and get my old system back.  I retired from graphics a few years back but still have old clients I do work for and maintain files for.  Would not have upgraded if I had known of the incompatability.

You did not due any due dilligence to investigate if your legacy apps would run, you should upgrade your apps. However if you feel you have to downgrade back to SL then click

Let it go... these DL's take forever, depending on the spped of your connection and the traffic on the servers.
If by morning it is still sitting there restart and the DL should pick up from where it left off.

  • Safari slows and crashes on old imac

I have an 8 year old imac with a problem that I think might be caused by adobe flash player. I spoke to the people at Apple's technical help line and they said it sounded like something with adobe flash player.
The problem seems to have 2 symptoms.
One is that safari keeps crashing. It seems to happen a lot when watching videos or any page with a lot of animation. For example when I was trying to watch a page with a house floorplan I got the "spinning beachball" and finally had to force quit and then got a message saying "the application safari quit while unresponsive." When watching a slideshow on Flickr safari suddenly quit and I got the message "The application safari quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the flash player plug-in."  I get similar crashes and messages when watching Youtube or looking at the web sites of various newspapers or radio stations. The other night for the first time I was watching some video using safari and got the message "A script in this movie is causing adobe flash player 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?"
The other problem is that something is causing safari to slow to a crawl. It doesn't seem to happen with any other applications. It is especially bad when watching videos such as Youtube. I can only watch youtube in the lowest resolution and smallest screen and then it is stop and go motion with long stops in between action. I used the Activity Monitor application to try to see what was going on. I don't understand most of it, but in the part that shows the percent of CPU being used, when I watch youtube, or almost any time safari slows to a crawl, the percent of CPU being used shoots right up to 100% and stays there. It seems something is hogging all the CPU.
Is this a problem with flash player? Some people suggested I uninstall flash player and then download and install the latest version. If I am reading it correctly it appears that because my imac is old I cannot use the latest version of flash player. I looked at the adobe web site and only saw pages for downloading flash player for intel macs. I don't know what version of flash player my computer can use and I don't know where on the web site to find out nor where to download it. I saw a page for "Archived Flash Player versions" but I wasn't sure if this was for Mac or Windows. It also had "debugger" versions. I don't know what that is. Someone also suggested after uninstalling and installing flash player that I repair disc permissions. Is that right?
My imac is a 1GHz PowerPC G4 with 1GB of RAM. The operating system is OS 10.5.8  According to the page on Adobe's website that shows the version of flash player that is on my computer I have MAC 10,1,102,64.  My safari version is 5.0.5.
Despite my imac being 8 years old it has worked almost flawlessly the whole time, other than this one problem. It would be great if I could get it back into good working order.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

that's what i use on mine, works-no problems. keep in mind if you insert the dongle you can unplug the wire to your keyboard. you'll be no worse off than you are now.

  • Safari and Leopard seeing fonts which aren't installed?

I'm having a problem in which Leopard seems to be seeing fonts which aren't installed.
I like to have my web pages display in Helvetica, and I'm pretty obsessive about cleaning out all of the places OS X and the various Adobe and Microsoft apps stash fonts. With Tiger and earlier this wasn't a problem, but Leopard seems to be doing something new. Specifically, Safari--and only Safari--shows that Georgia, Verdana and Times are installed and renders web pages with them, even though I have removed all of those fonts from my system.
I have double and triple checked to make sure none of those fonts are left on my drive. I searched for them, took all the instances I could find, zipped them, copied them onto a second hard drive and deleted the instances on my primary drive. Searching with Spotlight doesn't find them. I open Font Book and it doesn't see them. No other application shows the fonts as available. If I open up Fontexplorer it doesn't show those fonts as active or available, and I have used it to clear caches and restart. Yet if I go to Safari->Preferences->Appearance, the fonts show up as available, and only in Safari.
Does anyone know if Apple has made some change in Webkit/Safar, or do I have some old cache file sitting around? I did a Archive and Install, and preserved my user settings. Could there be a file hanging around I don't know about?

does it pre-load/pre-install fonts into your system you dont have or something???
It can't add software to your system that is not there somewhere already, but it will activate fonts no matter where they are for use by an app if the app requests the font. You can set it to ask you first before it does this.

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

It's not a good idea to allow websites to redirect to another site until you know for sure the original site is trustworthy.
But if you still want to do it (again not a good idea).
Tools>Options>Advanced>General - In Accessibility, uncheck "warn me when web sites try to redirect..." option.

I was recently prompted to update my Itunes player to the latest version. I'm using Windows Vista. I was left with an error message MSVCR80.dll and consequently no new update. I uninstalled the old version and have tried to reinstall manually several times. No luck. Consequently I have no player.
    Any ideas for a fix?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:

  • How can I fix this "Adobe two-version" problem, so only the latest version stays enabled, the old version stays DISABLED, and/or uninstall the old version?

I went to my add-ons tab, and I DO, in fact, have two versions of shockwave flash, an 11.9...version, and a 13.9..., which, if I'm not mistaken, is the latest version. There is a "ask to activate, always activate, never activate" button for EVERY add-on. I clicked never activate on the older version, and closed the tab. I then tried to play a video off of the Web. It would not play, I tried another site with the same result, so I went back to my add-on tab, and the button for the older version had changed back to "always activate" by itself. It continues to repeat this, and WILL NOT stay on "never activate". Every few times I return to the add-ons page, THE NEW VERSION IS DISABLED, AS WELL AS THE OLD ONE. I've tried to uninstall the old version, but when I go through control panel, and bring up the folder contents, the old version isn't even there! I've done start, find, and typed in "Adobe", and the old version is NOT FOUND! Both versions keep changing back and forth on the activate button, and they both will disable on their own, no matter how many times I fix it! smh!!

@jscher2000: Didn't mean to lose contact. I still don't have my playback problem solved, if you can believe that. I've downloaded the uninstaller / installer links with someones help that's on this forum, used them in the exact same order. It did nothing to help. However, I was in the process of attempting your solution. I made sure all browsers were closed; in fact, I went offline before this procedure. When I used find, and typed in Shockwave, it came back..."no search results". I recalled a path I had previously used, and had to use it instead of find, C:/ Acer/ Windows/SysWOW64/ Macromed/ and here there were files for Shockwave AND Flash. I opened Shockwave, says " this folder is empty". Flash Player and Flash Util plugin, Util32 Active X, NPSWF32_13_0_0_214.dll...all files appear correct, BUT why aren't there ANY files in the Shockwave folder? NONE of the buttons you describe in your steps to let Firefox "clean up" the pluginreg.dat file show in my window...if I am in the right window. My username is at the top, and it's drop-down is "3 button"+sign out. One says settings, but it doesn't take me to any "help", Trobleshooting info, "show folder", nor any way to exit Firefox or to start it back up. Settings goes to "edit settings", and has a list of checkboxes...all with something to do with threads in one aspect or another, and one concerning private messages. Sounds to me like I don't know what I'm doing, am on entirely the wrong Mozilla /Firefox page, and I'm NEVER, EVER going to get this damn video playback crap fixed once and for all. Some sites will let a video play, but they are rare. Vikings.com is the one that has me red-faced. NOTHING plays there. Except ads, of course. You can't get those to STOP.

  • Font change in Safari and Firefox after installing Snow Leopard...

My apologies if this has been addressed:
Immediately after updating from 10.5.8 to 10.6.2 the fonts displayed in both Safari and Firefox have changed. They are now a barely-legible "handwritten" font. I have attempted to resolve the issue to no avail. The issue only seems to be present with Safari and Firefox- there are no applications (that I have noticed yet*) that are affected. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, NYeBeing & welcome to discussions
I have attempted to resolve the issue to no avail.
What steps have you taken, exactly, so we don't repeat, etc. I'll assume you've already used OS X's FontBook to check font health & remove dupes, and you've cleared existing font caches using Snow Leopard compatible tools such as QnyX or FontDoctor.
    What languages are enabled?

  • Can I delete or uninstall the old version of Firefox left on C: drive when I installed 4.0 on the F: drive to save space and not lose bookmarks or other info?

Wanted to save space on C: drive and installed Firefox 4.0 on the F: drive. The new install did not delete the files of the older Firefox version in the C: drive. Is the 4.0 version in F: drive using any of the files left on the C: drive? Can I delete or uninstall the old version with out losing bookmarks or other vital information? I want to get the space back for the C: drive but don't want a big headache. When comparing file trees from the new install and the old, there were allot more files in the old and it made me afraid to delete or uninstall the old version.

The version on the C drive can be deleted, it will not be used. The bookmarks, along with other user data, is stored in the profile folder which is in a different location than the application - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
There are more files in the old version, many of the files in the new version are placed inside omni.jar which is a compressed file.
