Leopard vs Tiger with Logic/to switch or not to switch

That is the question. Tis nobler to stay with said tried and true tiger or switch to the inevitable new cat on the block.
Hamlet: 1600 and something......... or was it 1500???? 1400??? AD?? BC??? I digress....

Speaking as someone who has recently been forced to go to Leopard by buying a new Mac Pro (my G5 died), I would recommend staying on Tiger for the time being.
I've spent two full days reinstalling and reauthorizing everything from scratch, and am now effectively dead in the water since the following products just don't work right now:
Waves (Gold, V-series, API)
Duende
Access Virus TI
Guitar Rig 2
Garritan (Kontakt 2 player) (This plays but I can't authorize it)
Waves just isn't supported on Leopard yet (I've read that some people have made it work; I can't). Duende doesn't work on either 4/8-core Macs or Leopard, so I'm down on two counts there. The others should allegedly work, but don't, and I have calls into tech support for all of them.
I have read reports (here and elsewhere) of problems with the UAD-1, which is a real killer for me. I haven't installed mine yet to try it.
That doesn't leave me with much, so I'm just sitting here waiting right now...

  • Upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger with an external DVD drive.

I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Tiger 10.4.11 with an external DVD drive. The disc loads OK and prompts me for my password to restart and begin the installation. On restart, instead of being asked to accept the terms of use and etc... I just get the same prompt to restart and get caught in a loop. Any tips?

    Try this instead:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon of the Snow Leopard DVD.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Can't upgrade to snow leopard from tiger with mac box set

i have a macbook that runs 10.4.11. and this happened like last yr i think. i was going to upgrade it to snow leopard, and so i went to the store and bought the mac box set, the one costs $196. and here comes the trouble, no matter what i did, it couldn't be properly upgraded. like when it shows the window that says it is upgrading, it just tell you some errors occurred and then it couldn't proceed. so ever since i just continued using 10.4.11.
now i kind want to upgrade it again but im afraid that sth wrong is gonna happen again. so what should i do?? (b4 i upgraded, i erased everything in my mac, but still...)
the funny thing is, once i actually brought my macbook into the store and tried to upgrade in front f the technician, and it failed. later on they told me that i need to increase its memory from 1GB to 2GB, and i did so. but still........T.T

Hi, do you remember any of the exact wording of the errors?
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Report any errors it has.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Live Performances with Logic...or not

Hey everybody, Im running logic 7.2 on a powermac G4, and I'm using a onyx analog firewire mixer. Now the question is, can you put on a live show, using the eqs and plug ins on live audio music without that slight output delay. If not is there a certain software you guys would reccomend. Or is all new hardware recommended for this task.

well that is true in some cases, for example a 4
piece band with bass, drums guitar & keys that is
using the backing tracks just to add a few parts
won't suffer much if the computer froze up. but what
about the band that is using it for most of the
music, and the keyboard player is playing the VI's
with his controller. if the computer glitches, there
goes 90% of your music, Time to clap your hands,
stomp your feet and break into "We will rock you"
    while the computer reboots.
that is awesome... "We will rock you.... well hold on....we're going to a quick force quit and ..."
I agree. I am just starting to do this 'pure' electronic thing with a friend of mine. I am a bit nervous, but we have 2 separate machines running...If my machine tanks, while I reboot, he'll go bananas to make sure we keep the cacophony at constant level. Or that's the theory at least. If both machines tank, we're going to have to resort to the "every clap your hands like you just don't care" route.

  • Need help on my conditional logic (to switch or not to switch, that is the question)

I'm trying to write a function that will evaluate two variables, $misc1 and $misc2, they may or may not contain text. Essentially the possible outcomes are this:
    1) $Misc1 is blank and $Misc2 is blank
    2) $Misc1 is blank and $Misc2 has data
    3) $Misc1 has data and $Misc2 is blank
    4) $Misc1 has data and $Misc2 has data
    if 1, return $null
if 2, return the value of $misc2 + 5 blank spaces
if 3, return the value of $misc1 + 5 blank spaces
    if 4, return the value of $misc1 + 5 blank spaces + $misc2
Can I switch this, or does that only work on a single variable?
    [email protected]

Thank you mdkelley, ended up with this:
    Function Misc-Blank
    Param
    [string]$Misc1 = $Misc1,
    [string]$Misc2 = $Misc2
    if(([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and ([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return,$null}
    if(([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and (-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, " $misc2"}
    if((-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and ([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, " $misc1"}
    if((-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and (-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, "$misc1 $misc2"}

  • Soundtrack Pro, with Logic Studio. app will not work, while Garage Band is present on my iMac?

Still new to Logic Pro. Got the Soundtrack Pro when i bought the Logic Studio. am i to understand that this app will not work, while Garage Band is present on my iMac?
if this is true, i'd welcome any suggestions.  do i have to delete GarageBand on current machine which has Logic Pro?
    appreciate any help
    thanks,

My MacPro w/ OSX 10.6.8 runs GarageBand, SoundtrackPro and Logic 9 (Express) without issues.
Everything was installed fresh - ie no overwrite OS upgrades and no app version overwrite upgrades.
Just so we are clear - an UPGRADE would be from OSX 5 to 6 or from Logic 8 to 9 and involves a purchase. UPDATES are those decimal increments - 10.6.7 to 10.6.8  or Logic 9.1.3 to 9.1.6 that are free.
Sometimes the sequence of installs can make a difference.
    Good luck,
    x

  • To switch or not to switch.

    Hi all ...
I've been using Word (Mac) for a long time. I like a lot of the features and templates in Pages. My question is: "If I create my work in Pages, will my clients (many who are oriented to Word) be able to see, work with, and edit my pages document?"
I am aware that I can save the Pages document as a Word document, but what about the formatting, fonts, etc. Do they convert with ease?
    Would appreciate your feedback.

The nicer features in Pages do not convert or do not convert perfectly. If you stick strictly to common fonts they are OK. There is a little glitch that can happen at the tops of pages where an extra return is added and other little oddities.
It is not really suitable for passing backwards and forth from Word for PC and Pages on the Mac. Just the one off transfer of a relatively simple .pages file saved to .doc. Comments don't transfer and security is not compatible.
Rather than speculate, try the demo and transfer the type of material you will be using to see what the result is.

  • MacPro with both Leopard and Tiger drives. Want to switch iTunes How

I am running a MacPro with both Leopard and Tiger drives. I finally want to switch everything to Leopard and its drive. I have iTunes on the leopard drive but have never used it. How can I transfer my iTunes music, iPhone Apps etc. from the Tiger iTunes to the Leopard with the least amount of fuss?

    Hello hassiman,
For additional information regarding moving the entire library from the 10.4 partition to the 10.5 partition, see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If your iTunes Library is substantial, you may want to consider backing it up to an external location as well:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
    Hope this helps,
    Charles H.

  • Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade fails  with buffer overflow

I'm not sure where to proceed with the following situation:
I have a 17" MB pro with 1GB memory and 22GB free hard drive space. I booted into the installer from the CD and stepped through the prompts without changing any options to the point where the install starts doing it's magic. Shortly after starting, the install will crash complaining about a buffer overflow during/just after the part where it's finding system files.
I originally tried to do this with only 10GB free, but after the first failure, I did a repair disk using the Disk Utility and removed a bunch of really old files I no longer needed, which brought the available disk space to 22GB, but this did not help anything. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. I use Carbon Copy Cloner as a backup so I can do a full wipe and install, however I would prefer to avoid that as it is a lot of work to get things back.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Error log follows. I cut out a lot of stuff so please let me know if that detail is needed.

Regarding the need to buy the packaged bundle, I keep seeing folks here and elsewhere claiming that is not necessary.
That's because they have not read, or concern themselves with the license agreement. Section 2. "Permitted License Uses and Restrictions", section C says on http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf
It's been read forwards, backwards, and upside down. Nowhere on the packaging is there any identification of the $29 (or $49 family pack) version as only suitable as a "Leopard upgrade" version. There are vague mentions about it on Apple's online sales page and in press releases. I've read the license terms thoroughly and the only conclusion that could reasonably be conferred is that the $29 version carries a "single user" license simply because it doesn't say "family pack". There are plenty of reports that it installs over Tiger just fine.
Granted I've read numerous reports and I installed my copy over Leopard. However - imagine someone who vaguely heard about it, walked into a store and bought a copy, thoroughly looked over the box and the license terms (within the disc), and installed it in good faith over Tiger. There is ZERO, ZIP, NADA on the package that would lead anyone to believe it is anything but a copy with a "SINGLE USER" license where the terms don't preclude installing over Tiger.
    C. Leopard Upgrade Licenses. If you have purchased an Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer as long as that computer has a properly licensed copy of *Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it.*
    The emphasis above is mine.
While this may not be enforced by a software key, it is there in the license agreement on the PDF included on the CD, when you purchase the under $100 licenses, which are also called "Upgrade" on the store.
There's an opinion that "Leopard upgrade" only applies to the "Up To Date" versions that require proof of purchase of a recent Mac computer. The reports on those installer discs are that they do in fact check for a valid Leopard installation.
The following has the most in-depth discussion on the subject of whether or not the license allows for Snow Leopard over Tiger that I've seen so far:
    http://www.mackb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/mac/26361/the-29-purchase-price-of-Snow-Leop ard
This is the best description I've heard on it, from someone who identifies himself as "David Empson":
    http://www.mackb.com/Uwe/Threads/Single.aspx/mac/26361?ArtId=1j5mofd.1pw6lllbtpj dwN%25dempson%40actrix.gen.nz
If someone walks in and buys Snow Leopard, without written notice from
Apple that they are buying an Upgrade version which requires Leopard,
and without discussing that point with the seller, the buyer is under no
obligation to have researched their purchase in advance and know all of
Apple's publicity statements from three months ago.
They are buying it in good faith, and the contract (licence) is valid.

  • Will my new iMac come with Leopard or Tiger?

    Hi,
I'm going to Uni on Monday and want to finally purchase my Mac now that Leopard has been released.
My question is: If I order my new Mac on Monday, will it come with Leopard or Tiger?
In the online store it still states that it will come with Tiger, but maybe this has just not been updated?
If people don't know the answer, would you happen to know an Apple contact email address or telephone number I can call (in the UK) to check prior to ordering?

Are you sure you want to get a Mac with Leopard preloaded?
It may actually not be compatible with some of the software you depend on, and will have no chance of being so (unless the product is updated) because Macs historically have only been able to use the operating system they ship with and newer operating systems, and we are still learning which products need updates for Leopard.
The online store has a phone number in the upper left hand corner:

  • Correct binding order in a Cluster with logical switches, NIC teams, and vNICs on the host.

I have seen many recommendations to set the network binding order on you Hyper-V hosts to something similar to:
    Management NIC
    Cluster NICs
    iSCSI NICS
However, all of  these recommendations are for scenarios where the NICs are all physical NICs in the host.
Using Server 2012 R2, I am building converged networks with logical switches, NIC Teams, and vNICs on the host.  So when I go set the network binding order, I now have all these components to deal with as well.  For example, on a 4 adapter blade,
I might typically have the following items in the binding order drop-down.
4 - physical NICs (2- teamed for the 1 virtual switch, the other 2 used for iSCSI)
    1 - Team interface (Datacenter_Switch)
    5 - vNICs (Management, Cluster, LiveMigration, iSCSI-1, iSCSI-2)
So, should you only worry about order of the vNICS (placed at the top) and let the other components just fall to the bottom of the list?  This seems to be likely to me, since the binding order applies to service access to the resources, and the other
components are not being directly accessed by network services?
Or, should the order start out with the physical resources needed to access the vNICs, followed by any intermediate resources (switches or team interfaces, then the vNICS themselves, to ensure that the resources are available to the subcompnents accessing
    them?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    -Tim Reid

If by 'network binding order' you mean the order set in the Advanced Settings of the Network Connections of the Control Panel, then the most important one is to make sure the domain network is at the top of the list.  Whichever network is at the top
of the list is used first for auth functions.  So auth functions perform best when the proper network is placed first in the binding order.  After that, I don't know that it makes much difference at all.  (If it does, I'm sure my statement will
    start a lively discussion. <grin>)

  • Advice needed on whether to reinstall Snow Leopard with Logic Studio 8

Prior to purchasing Snow Leopard upgrade, my Imac 3.06GHz 4GB RAM was running Logic studio 8 really nicely. Plugins include Realguitar 2, Abbey Rd drums, KorePlayer and I use the Tascam FireOne controller for audio. After installing Snow Leopard I noticed logic was overloading much easier than previously. This appeared to be that only one core of the CPU was showing activity and once that maxed out the system stopped. I decided after much frustration to wipe the iMac and revert to the original OS. However I dont think the situation has improved much - although I dont get logic hanging when I quit the application, I notice it still tends to run out of steam long before it did before. Now I am wondering whether to risk reinstalling the Snow Leopard upgrade as I would like to get a trackpad and a few other features I miss from SL. I am guessing from what I've read on the forum that many users are happy with Logic 8 studio on Snow Leopard and are not getting the same issues as myself. I've read the articles on load balancing cores etc, but what I dont understand is why I never had to bother with this before .. it all just worked fine!
If I do install the upgrade to SL, is there an easy way to reverse if I am not happy without having to completely reinstall everything? If I backup with time machine, will that enable me to revert back to the OS?
Sorry for such a long posting but advice would greatly be received! I also have a macbook pro which I havent tried installing snow leopard on yet, maybe I could try it out on that first?
    Many thanks
    Simon

Snow Leopard is for Logic 9 and higher. Or vice versa.
    Cheers

  • Anybody experience with Mac Leopard or Tiger on Equium A210-17I

Has anybody experience with Mac Leopard or Tiger on an AMD Toshiba? I read about some folks installing it on AMD and Intel and wondered how it could feel and work on an Equium. I have A210 17l.
    Thanks for your input.

It seems to be that you are alone with this idea. If you will try it in the future please post a little bit about it.
    Good luck!

  • Ensemble with Logic 8 on Leopard stability question

I'm on the verge of ordering an Apogee Ensemble, particularly for its integration with Logic. I'd read that there were initially issues with drivers and stability. As I search the forum, it looks like there have been some mixed experiences in terms of stability even fairly recently.
Are folks finding that things are working reliably at this point between the Ensemble with Logic 8 (Studio) running under Leopard?
    Thanks in advance for responses!

I find my Ensemble to be rock solid so far (purchased last month). However Logic itself is flakier than a leper with chronic dandruff and exscma in a detergent factory.

  • Switching from leopard to tiger

I have been totally underwelmed with Leopard. sort of strikes me of the XP -> vista situation..
sow start ups mail freezing .. loss of utilities I used.. the usual two steps forward three steps back BS that I am sure they will work out after 5 or so more updates
I had already decided to keep my G5 farm on Tiger.... as well as my PB.... but the questions now arises is my intel mini-macs...
I remember that there was a beta of bootcamp that worked with tiger.. did that expire with the release of leopard>>??

Mail freezing is usually a matter of the hard drive being too full, permissions needing repair, or an outdated firmware on your router that needs updating. With third party routers because 802.11n is still draft spec, that could be a problem and sticking to 802.11g until your 802.11n router has a finalized 802.11n may be a good idea. You can run Windows in Tiger with many third party virtualization solutions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
However, if your Mac shipped with Leopard, you can't downgrade it to Tiger.
Only Macs which shipped new earlier than October 26, 2007 can be downgraded to Tiger. Macs can only run the Mac operating system they shipped with and newer up to the limits of the hardware.
The Windows operating system and Linux operating system options are endless thanks to Virtualization.
If you wish to isolate your issues in Leopard so that the freezing goes away, backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And we'll help you some more when you tell us that is done.
