Leopard/Windows

I have Intego Virus Barrier X4 installed on my Intel iMac.  Fairly new
to Mac and in order to use some of my previous windows software I am
considering installing Win XP Home Edition via VMware Fusion (not
Parallels) but I am concerned about security issues with windows while
on-line.  My thought is to connect to the internet only when running Mac (Leopard) in the belief (mistakenly?) that windows being not on-line I should be OK. My Speedtouch 516 router has a  firewall on board which has proved perfectly safe so far. Is it best to activate the firewall within Leopard? If anyone has experience of Mac/Windows joint install I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

Thanks for your helpful reply, which if I read it right, should mean that if I disconnect from the internet while running windows and only connect when running Leopard then I should be OK. Or am I still not understanding? Thanks again.

  • Need walk thru for backing up Leopard/Windows systems

I have Leopard/Windows preinstalled on my intel 250Gb Imac (installed by seller of the Mac). I am tech unsavvy and would appreciate a step by step walk thru of how to back up both systems onto a single 500Gb external hard drive (assuming I am using CCC and Winclone). I am particularly confused about partitioning the external drive for this purpose. Thanks to any patient reader who can help.

No need to partition the external drive; just make sure it is formatted as Mac OS Extended using Disk Utility. Then start up CCC and clone using the default settings with the source being your main drive and the target being the external (this may take awhile). This will give you an identical clone of your main drive. Then you can run Winclone, which will copy your Windows partition to a file on whatever Mac drive that you choose. You will not be able to run Windows from the cloned file, but could use it to restore your Windows partition.

  • External Hard Drive with Snow Leopard/Windows 7

I just bought a 500GB external HD that I would like to be able to use with Snow Leopard AND Win 7. I won't be using it for any Time Machine backups. I just want to be able to read/write files on it with both Leopard and Win 7.
Is there any recommended format procedures in order to be able to do this. I may be wrong, but I don't think I can read/write to my external Time Machine external hard drive with my Windows lap top running Win 7.

a TM drive must be formatted mac os extended and windows can't even read that without extra software like Mac Drive. It also requires that the partition scheme be GUID which it's most likely not at the moment so repartition the drive with correct partition scheme now if you do decide to use it for TM in the future. also, snow bootcamp drivers once you install them in windows will let you red (but not write) to mac os extended formatted drives.
the only FS which is natively read+write from both OS X and windows is FAT. but it's very old and has many deficiencies especially on the OS X side.
    but it's good for interoperability.
or you can format the drive NTFS and use some software like NTFS-3g or NTFS for mac by paragon to make it writable from OS X.
you may also wish to split the drive in two partitions and format them differently.

  • Triple Boot Snow Leopard, Leopard, Windows 7 RC

I just managed a triple boot setup on a new MBP. I now have Snow Leopard 10.6.1, Leopard, 10.5.8, and Windows 7 RC and can boot easily to
any of them with the option-key at power on. These are the steps I followed:
    1) Installed the windows 7 RC via Boot Camp as per this
    recipe: http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/using-boot-camp-to-install-windows-7-on-you r-mac-the-complete-walkthrough/
    2) Formated an external FW drive with 3 partitions: Clone, Backup, and Media.
    3) Used Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to clone a 10.5.8 installation I have on a mac-mini onto an external FW drive. (Even though I have a
Leopard family pack install disk, you can't boot from it - at least I couldn't and anyway, most of what I wanted was on the mini anyway).
    4) Used Time Machine to backup the 10.6.1 onto the FW drive Backup partition (I guess I could have used CCC but I was familiar with Time
Machine and not with CCC until today).
    5) Used WinClone to make an image of the BOOTCAMP partition on the external FW drive (just in case)
    6) I booted the MBP from the Clone of 10.5.8 to make sure it would work and that there would be no driver issues (trackpad etc) - it worked
    just fine.
    7) Now comes the scary part: (I have read a lot of posts about the challenges of doing a triple boot with a Boot Camp Windows partition
already installed that result in XP or Vista not being bootable. Lots of folks have found workarounds to solve this I know). With the
machine booted from the clone of 10.5.8 -RUNNING ON THE EXTERNAL FW DRIVE, I launched the disk utility and and resized the 10.6.1 partition
to half what it was. (click on the 10.6.1 partition and then click on the + sign at the bottom left - this will allow you to keep the
contents of 10.6.1 intact but free up some space). Call the new volume whatever you like and format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    8) Used CCC to copy the clone of 10.5.8 onto the new partition created in step 7.
    9) Shut down and Power-up with the option key and all was well. All three OS's available. No modification of the Windows 7 bootmgr or any
    other boot parameters.
    10) Boot to the 10.5.8 partition and change the computer network name to something else other than the name of the mini.
Worked for me and wasn't as difficult as some of the other approaches.

Just one question: Why would you create a partition for Snow Leopard and Leopard?

  • Mac OS X Leopard & Windows 7

    Hi,
I have a duo 2 core iMac which runs the OS X Leopard. Can the bootcamp that came with the Leopard run with the Windows 7 32/64bit?

No. For Windows 7, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard:

  • Formatting a USB flash drive for Mac OS X Leopard & Windows XP

I'm pretty new to Mac, so forgive me if this seems a very basic question.
How do I format a USB flash drive so that it can be seen by both an Imac running Mac OS X Leopard and a PC running Windows XP?
If one or other machine can't see the drive it makes transferring files really frustrating.
    Your advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can either use Windows or OSx to format the flash drive to FAT32. This will allow you to read and write from OSx and Windows. If you just bought the flash drive then double check before you format as it may already be formatted to FAT32.
Use Disk Utility from OSx to format your flash drive OR from windows, click on *My Computer* and then highlight the drive letter and choose File from the top menu and then Format.

  • Mac Pro 2010 triple boot (Snow Leopard + Windows + Yosemite)?

    Hello All,
This is my first question here, I'm usually trying to find the answer myself, but this time I wasn't able to find anything clear enough to me. So I hope that someone can give me clear and easy to understand answer. I must also tell that my English isn't perfect, but should be more than good enough for communication. :-)
I have Mac Pro 2010, 4 core CPU 3.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI 5870.
HD Bay 1: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Snow Leopard 10.6.8
(Just to add: I am happy because when I bought my Mac it came with 10.6. I am happy with it, it's stable, and I want to keep it as it is)
HD Bay 2: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Windows 7 x64 (bootcamp, full drive)
(I am very happy how it works, so I want to keep it as is)
HD Bay 3: WD Green 2 TB - for all kind of data storage
HD Bay 4: Was empty until yesterday, but now I have another WD Black 1 TB to put it in - still not formatted.
I would like to install Yosemite on that new drive (first I was thinking about Maverick, but then I saw that some new applications will not run, like Final Cut Pro X, new MS Office, still in beta, plus I would like to use iMessage, etc.), and keep everything else as it is now - absolutelly untouched.
    • Is it safe to do it, or I can make some mistake and lose Snow Leo and/or Windows?
    • Is position of the drives important? Should I, for example, put new drive in a Bay 3, and move data disk to Bay 4, or it doesn't matter?
    • When I download it from App Store, and when installation starts automatically, do I have an option to select to keep untouched everything I have now?
(I don't want even to collect any data from Snow Leopard, like mail settings, bookmarks, applications installed - absolutely nothing, it should run as a totally new comp and without any interaction with Snow Leopard, except ordinary hard disk access, like any other hard drive)
    • Will my bootcamp drive be safe, I will still be able to boot from it?
I was also thinking about this:
I saw that it is possible to make bootable USB flash drive with installation. If I do that, and if I phisically unplug all other drives except a new one, then do installation, shut it down, and plug back all other drives, will everything work? Will I have triple boot when I press option key during start-up? Does all this makes sense at all to you?
Finally, does anyone have some experience with Mac Pro 2010 + ATI 5870 with Yosemite? Is it smooth, no problems with graphics or some other things?
I will really appreciate some answer about all this.
    Cheers!

Some tips about Yosemite and Core Storage from MacIntouch Reader Reports on Yosemite:
    Ric Ford [MacInTouch]
Yosemite's changes have led to questions and confusion about disk formatting and partitioning issues, backward compatibility, and dual-booting Mac OS X 10.6 and Yosemite. Below are a few notes on these issues from an email discussion (questions, tips and clarifications are welcome).
Core Storage changes debuted in OS X 10.7 Lion, with Apple's new FileVault 2 whole-disk encryption and hidden Recovery Partition.
Generally, running OS X 10.7 and up shouldn't corrupt or convert the HFS+ partitions used by pre-OS X 10.7 systems (still supported in later OS X versions). There are, however, a few special cases to beware, and this is where things get confusing. Here are some specific issues:
    1) FileVault 2 encryption and "Fusion" drives both depend on Core Storage, so applying those to any partition will render it inaccessible by pre-OS X 10.7 systems.
    2) Yosemite's installation process silently converts a partition to Core Storage, incompatible with Mac OS X 10.6 and earlier. Ars Technica's review describes this issue.
    3) Running Disk Utility's "repair" function in Yosemite against a Mac OS X 10.6 (HFS+) partition has caused problems in some cases, such as making the Mac OS X 10.6 partition unbootable.
(A search for Core Storage on MacInTouch will turn up more discussion and tips.)

  • Cannot print Snow Leopard - Windows 7 x64 Shared Printer

I need to configure printer sharing between a 64-bit Win7 Ultimate dektop and a Macbook Pro laptop running OS X Snow Leaopard (10.6). I have followed all of the conventional wisdom I can find on the net without success.

All updates applied to both systems, latest printer drivers on both.

Both systems in the same homegroup on the same subnet. IP addressed assigned via DHCP but preconfigured at the router -- essentially, fixed.

I've tried this with AV and firewalls on and of on both machines; same results
File sharing works in both directions

Win7 configured as follows:
All Print and Document Services Enabled
Printer: Canon Pixma MX700 connected via USB
Share This Printer on for both printer and FAX (it’s a MF printer)
Network discover: on
File & printer sharing: on
Anyone with network access can read/write
Media streaming: off
Enable sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption
Password protected sharing: off
Allow windows to manage homegroup connections
Network profile set to Work

Snow Leopard configured as follows:
    System preferences->Print&Fax->Add Printer->Advanced
    Add printer
    Type = Windows
    URL= smb://user:password@workgroup/cptrname/MX700 -or-
    URL = smb://user:password@workgroup/192.168.1.10/MX700
Print using: Chhose a Driver or Printer Model: Camon Pixma MX700
The printer configures successfully and I can queue print jobs from the Mac. It shows up in the appropriate print queue on the Windows machine as Remote Downlevel Document and hangs in Spooling state. The only way to delete the document is to reset the print subsystem on the Mac.
I also tried unchecking “Enable bidirectional printing” under the printer properties on the Mac to no effect.

Your issue is with the Canon driver. It cannot be used on the Mac when you have the Canon inkjet shared by Windows. For these types of connections, you need to use an alternate driver, such as the Gutenprint driver set.
The only problem with Gutenprint is that your MX700 is not listed as a supported printer. So, you could spend hours trying to find which of the other Canon models that are supported by Gutenprint will work to your printer. Or, you could look at purchasing PrintFab.

  • Triple Boot; Mavericks, Snow Leopard & Windows 7

    Hello

  • Another version of Leopard - Windows network problems

Like many others, I have a networking problem after installing Leopard on my G4 Powerbook. I had a successful ethernet network previously using two Windows 98 computers, an iBook G3 running Tiger, and my Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9
Only the Powerbook was upgraded to Leopard. The Powerbook can see, connect to, and read & write to all other computers using the Finder - Go - Connect to Server command. No problems, so I am better off than many others who have reported worse problems.
BUT, my Windows PC's cannot see the Leopard machine. I have done what I thought I should in the System Preferences - sharing pane. I have tried setting both folders and drives to shared, and have tried deselecting them and then selecting them again as some have suggested. My Powerbook with Leopard is still invisible to the PC's, both trying to use the "Open" command from a program, or the "Network Neighborhood" command from Windows Explorer.
Any suggestions? I know that some users cannot talk between PC's and Leopard at all, so I am glad I can at least read & write from the Leopard end!

Spoke too soon. For the past few weeks since installing Leopard, network connections have been erratic. The Powerbook with Leopard was working well yesterday, but then suddenly ceased to see the Windows computers. For the time being I have gicen up and reinstalled Tiger.
I will keep checking this forum and give Leopard another try when it seems to work better with networking.
Makes those Apple TV spots poking fun at Vista users going back to XP seem a little amusing.

  • Snow Leopard + Windows Vista =?

Yesterday I just purchased Vista Home Basic (don't ask, it was required for a business class) and installed it via Bootcamp. I also purchased Snow Leopard today with the upgrade deal ($10 for a new OS!?) but my concern is whether I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista after I update my current Leopard OS to Snow... will it be a seamless transition, or will I have to re-partition my HDD and such? Just a worry, and if you can put my mind to rest I would be grateful.
    Thank you in advance.

but my concern is whether I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista after I update my current Leopard OS to Snow
No, you won't. When in VIsta, insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and install the updated drivers. If you need to repartition or erase the drive for some reason, WinClone can be used to back up and restore Windows instead of needing to reinstall it.

  • Snow Leopard + Windows.....

Question, I am really very interested in Snow Leopard, however for some customers it will be vital to connect their few PC's to Snow Leopard Server to access all the new features, CalDAV and CardDav etc.
Without this vital connection they might go for something else which would be a shame...
Is apple going to produce an installer for windows to access these lovely features ???
    I hope so...

Why do you expect Apple to ship an installer for these?
CalDAV and CardDAV are open standards. As such any vendor can add support to their own products (doesn't even need OS support - the application can do it all on its own).
Check out http://caldav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html for a list of CalDAV-compliant clients or http://carddav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html for CardDAV clients.

  • Leopard  windows? virtualization?  --bootcamp void warrenty?

    hey there.
so im going to install windows on my imac
(gets here wednesday) via bootcamp, will this void
the warrenty? i understand its 'not supported'
but im under the impression that if it wipes my hard
drive im on my own, but they will fix my imac if
the fan driver is bad and it cooks; or something along the same lines.
when using bootcamp are hardware malfunctions still covered
    by warrenty?
itd be nice to know installing this on a 1700 dollar piece of machinery.
and, i hear theres going to be built in support for windows
in leopard. i think (and hope) they will inlude some professional quality virtualization software, so
theres no rebooting, also eliminating microsoft from the picture.
    what are your thoughts?
has anything been released on leopard?
looks like vista is copying alot off of tiger,
which is a 5 year old OS, so ill bet leopard will blow away vista (big surprise).

i've installed windows using boot camp already.. a few things i hate abt it.. first of all it is not able to sense my in built isight camera.. there was once when it seemed like it could finally sense it, then when i rebooted it was gone again. i have no idea why.. also, sometimes my keyboard juz dies out on windows.. i have to unplug and replug it again before im able to continue using it which is quite troublesome.. Other than that, im quite happy with windows on my mac
