Leopard won't install on G5 iMac - nothing happens after restart

I put in the Leopard DVD into my first generation G5 iMac. A Leopard window opens and asks allows me to click on "Install Leopard." I double click and it tells me Leopard wants to restart my computer and has me type in the computer password. I do. The computer restarts and the gray screen comes up with the gray Apple logo/icon in the center of the screen. Nothing happens. The fans start to come on. It's stuck. Tried this 3 times. I have never had an install fail this way. I have to wonder if Leopard is ready for prime time.

I called Apple, in India I think. After going through my serial number (hold the computer upside down in your lap and use a magnifying glass to read the serial number, holding the phone in the other hand) I was asked the most inane questions like "Where did you buy the iMac." I don't remember and had to say "What does it matter where I bought it? I don't remember. Can we please get to the question I called about... this Leopard software I just bought from your company?" So, we got into the problem. Anyway, I was told to restart the iMac with the C down on the keyboard. I am using a wireless keyboard and suspected it wouldn't help... I thought the bluetooth software wouldn't work until the computer had booted... but lo and behold, the "spinning gear" soon appeared and, after that, the rest of the normal Leopard installation. It's going on now. Fingers crossed.

  • Leopard won't install on PPC iMac G5

Hello, I've had my iMac G5 (non-intel) since 2005. I've recently upgraded my iphone to a 4, and I want to install Leopard so I can sync with my computer. After going to all the trouble and expense to get the software, I stick it in and click upgrade. I get the language box on the restart, then preparing install, but then I just get a message that says "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer. The software cannot be installed on this computer."
As far as I know, my computer meets the minimum requirements for an upgrade. Any ideas?

The gray discs are machine-specific, meaning that they will only work on the models of Macs they originally shipped with. They do not have drivers and code for other Macs, meaning they are useless unless they are with the original computer or equivalent model.
If you call Apple Phone Sales (800 MY APPLE in the US), you can still order a retail version of Leopard for $129. You may be able to find a retail disc elsewhere online, but make sure it is the black disc with the big X on it, not a gray disc.

  • Leopard won't install on my iMac

So I erased my hard-drive to re-install my copy of leopard that came with my computer but it won't install- it keeps stopping about halfway and saying it can't be installed on my Mac. Any ideas?
My computer was working fine until it froze trying to update Adobe reader and when I forced it to restart it got stuck on the grey apple screen. I tried restarting from safe boot and it didn't work- it would only boot from the cd. I tried repairing the disk and permissions but it kept giving me different errors so I just went ahead and erased everything, which brings me back to not being able to reinstall the os.

Was it repairing disk or permissions that kept giving different errors?
I think this was available in 10.5 installs, but can't check... hit CMD+L before starting the Install or right after, that should show a log of what exactly is going on.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Leopard won't instal on G4 iMac

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I'm new to discussions and can't find it anywhere.
I have a G4 iMac with X.3.9 and wanted to instal Leopard. The Disk made a frightful racket and stuck for hours -- had to zap the pram to get it out.
So I tried X.4 installing as an interim and it said the installation was unsuccessful, due to and I think it said disk defect or maybe error.
I have repaired permissions and tried Disk warrior, which also seems to stick halfway, though it will eject. I daren't try using the install software to repair the HD, as the instal software comes in 3 disks and is so far behind the 3.9 that I use that I'm afraid it will downgrade the software and wipe the software and programs installed after the upgrades to 3.9, also that I would lose the contents of the mail client.
What do I do now -- the computer works OK most of the time, though it is slow. But I have X.5 on my iBook (which is packing in for the 2nd time) and would like to have it on the iMac. Please help!

You should never install any software, especially a new OS on a broken computer. It will never fix anything and will usually break it.
You should immediately clone your HD since your computer is clearly in need of repair and you will lose all your data if you do not back it up promptly.
When you say that your computer works "most of the time" that means it's broken and must be fixed. A new OS does not fix broken hardware.

  • Leopard won't load installation on iMac G5

I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro, but it won't install on my iMac G5. The DVD loads and I restart my computer, but once it boots up it just goes to the grey screen and sits there. The disc makes all sorts of noise, and I just get the beach ball. I've let it sit for 15 minutes, and nothing happens. The DVD is in fine condition. What should I do?

If you an individual license for Leopard (the standard $129 purchase or the up to date program), you can't have more than one installation of it on more than one machine simultaneously legally.
If you do have the family license or other multi-person license for Leopard and this disc is from that family licensed purchased pack, consider the steps necessary to upgrade safely your iMac G5 before actually upgrading*:

Perhaps you missed one, which could fix the problem.

  • Leopard won't install on my G5 Dual 2Ghz

I made a clone of my hard drive onto an external Firewire drive and tried to install Leopard on there to test compatibility. It gave up after 15 minutes...
"Install failed. The MacOS could not be installed on your computer. The installer could not verify the contents of the 'Essentials' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
I tried this a few times with he same results and then tried a clean install on an internal drive. This time it was Mail.app that could not be verified when it gave up.
I made a disk image of the installer on an external hard drive and tried to install from that. Same error.
Leopard installed on my Mac Mini without a problem.
    There's something seriously wrong here.

I can also confirm: *Leopard won't install on my G5 dual 2 Ghz EITHER.*
I get as far as "Select the Drive you want to install Leopard on" and only my second drive bay HD appears. My primary startup HD with the OS on it does NOT appear in the window as a selection.
In addition it took 4 tries just to finally get the procedure to recognize and display my Startup HD to select for rebooting the computer when trying to QUIT the install process. Apple, you got a problem. Stock machine here. NEVER any problems doing OS upgrades since Oct. 03....until this moment. No peripherals attached. Standard hardware config. What's Up?

  • Leopard won't install on PowerMac g4 AGP graphics

Leopard won't install on PowerMac g4 AGP graphics (2) which was pimped to 1.5 ghz with Sony dual power drive with 100 GB internal HD currently happy running on OS X 10.4.10 Tiger, the rest of the G5s (6) was upgraded bautifully. Again anybody out there with slick idea on how to deal with this leftover G4. The Leopard disk simply say " OS X 10.5 can not be installed on this computer" end of story if we insist on trying other ways the machine simply blank-out ( you know the dreaded question mark and the happy face folder). Our IT Guy is ready to chop-shop these machine and has painted himself in a corner on this matter, so I sent out this S.O.S.…I guest the world can help…anybody please.

If you have a corp IT department can't you convince them to refresh your machine more than once every 8 years? Most corporate machines are refreshed every 3 years... 8 is 2 2/3 times normal life. Maybe suggest a nice shiny new 24" iMac

It's a 3rd party app.  You really should contact Adobe Support and/or post in the Adobe Forums
    Mac OS X (10.6.6)
Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Unplug the device from power and plug it back in.
If it still fails to respond properly, connect it to a computer via microUSB and restore via iTunes.

My PC will not download iTunes 10.7. Nothing happens after clicking on Save File.  Do I have to uninstall 10.6.1.7 first?

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?
