Leopard won't install; says it will erase HD

A friend of mine just bought Leopard and I went over to help her install it (I've already got it on our computers and we had NO installation problems at all) and we went to install it and there was a yellow exclamation mark over her computer's HD icon and when you tried to go further it said it could not be installed because the system wasn't changeable or something and then it said if we installed it , it would erase all the information on her hard drive!! In all my years on installing stuff on Macs, I've really never seen that one before. Any ideas? I don't have a clue. Thanks for any help.

There are many reasons for that Yellow !
I assume Tiger still works. Run Tiger and use the disk utility to check and repair, if necessary, the disk and the permissions.
Then read this Mac document:
Mac OS X 10.5: Only installation option may be Erase and Install
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306877
No guarantees, but it should work.

  • Leopard won't install on PowerMac g4 AGP graphics

Leopard won't install on PowerMac g4 AGP graphics (2) which was pimped to 1.5 ghz with Sony dual power drive with 100 GB internal HD currently happy running on OS X 10.4.10 Tiger, the rest of the G5s (6) was upgraded bautifully. Again anybody out there with slick idea on how to deal with this leftover G4. The Leopard disk simply say " OS X 10.5 can not be installed on this computer" end of story if we insist on trying other ways the machine simply blank-out ( you know the dreaded question mark and the happy face folder). Our IT Guy is ready to chop-shop these machine and has painted himself in a corner on this matter, so I sent out this S.O.S.…I guest the world can help…anybody please.

If you have a corp IT department can't you convince them to refresh your machine more than once every 8 years? Most corporate machines are refreshed every 3 years... 8 is 2 2/3 times normal life. Maybe suggest a nice shiny new 24" iMac

  • Update available for firefox 3.6.12 but won't install;says connection timed out

I've had firefox 3.6.12 for a couple of months. it says an upgrade is available, but won't install. says connection timed out. I tried it from IE 8 as well, same result. Took me a half our just to get to mozilla.com I installed IE 8 2 days ago, and since then, my monitor flashes the page when i'm in gmail. Also flash videos won't play worth a crap. I just installed K-lite Mega 6.6 to try to fix that.

I wonder if it's not some of the newer technologies like HTML 5 that the other browsers support. I have the same problem, and the sites load fine in Opera. I still have 3.6 (whatever's latest), and haven't upgraded to 4 yet because of all the extensions I use. I'm waiting until it's more stable and my more important extensions are usable. I use Hulu's desktop viewer and Opera to make up for it, currently.
Adding screenshots of my experience with it. The text will load, but no video or images. That's why I thought it might be some new language / protocol.

The music does not belong to you.  You have no legal right to it and there is no way to keep it.

  • How do i get my library from my phone to my new computer? I no longer have access to the old computer. When I try to sync it says it will erase everythiong from my phone.

How do I get my library from my phone to my new computer? I no longer have access to the old computer and when I try to sync my music, it says it will erase everything on my phone. My itunes library is not showing up when I sign into the new computer. Its not even showing any downloads.

The iphone is not a backup/storage device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which you sync.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone:  File>Transfer Purchases.

Bought a new macbook and want to manually manage music onto my iphone 4s (as it is already full of music from old windows laptop) but when i click 'manually manage' and then 'apply' i get the message saying it will erase everything already on there. Need help please!

Before you sync your iPhone make sure that all the music that was synced to your phonereviously has been copied to your iTunes on the new MacBook Pro. Then when you connect your phone you will be able to either sync all music or select only those playlists that you want on the phone.

  • Leopard won't install on my G5 Dual 2Ghz

I made a clone of my hard drive onto an external Firewire drive and tried to install Leopard on there to test compatibility. It gave up after 15 minutes...
"Install failed. The MacOS could not be installed on your computer. The installer could not verify the contents of the 'Essentials' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
I tried this a few times with he same results and then tried a clean install on an internal drive. This time it was Mail.app that could not be verified when it gave up.
I made a disk image of the installer on an external hard drive and tried to install from that. Same error.
Leopard installed on my Mac Mini without a problem.
    There's something seriously wrong here.

I can also confirm: *Leopard won't install on my G5 dual 2 Ghz EITHER.*
I get as far as "Select the Drive you want to install Leopard on" and only my second drive bay HD appears. My primary startup HD with the OS on it does NOT appear in the window as a selection.
In addition it took 4 tries just to finally get the procedure to recognize and display my Startup HD to select for rebooting the computer when trying to QUIT the install process. Apple, you got a problem. Stock machine here. NEVER any problems doing OS upgrades since Oct. 03....until this moment. No peripherals attached. Standard hardware config. What's Up?

  • I purchased a refurbished iPad and downloaded some videos via Wi-fi.  Now I want to do a sync backup on my computer but it says it will erase my ipad because it is already synced to another computer.  I guess the previous owner's computer.  What can I do?

I purchased a refurbished iPad and downloaded some videos via Wi-fi.  Now I want to do a sync backup on my computer but it says it will erase my ipad because it is already synced to another computer.  I guess the previous owner's computer.  What can I do without losing my downloads?

    Hi, mtsak.
I would recommend transferring your purchases to your computer.  After the transfer is complete your media should be in your iTunes library.  If the indicator that your iPad will be erased appears, just sync the transferred media.  Only media purchased via iTunes with your Apple ID will transfer.  From there, you should be able to backup.

Also, if you ever are missing purchased iTunes media, you can download it again free of charge by following the steps in the article below.

  • Leopard won't install on my iMac

So I erased my hard-drive to re-install my copy of leopard that came with my computer but it won't install- it keeps stopping about halfway and saying it can't be installed on my Mac. Any ideas?
My computer was working fine until it froze trying to update Adobe reader and when I forced it to restart it got stuck on the grey apple screen. I tried restarting from safe boot and it didn't work- it would only boot from the cd. I tried repairing the disk and permissions but it kept giving me different errors so I just went ahead and erased everything, which brings me back to not being able to reinstall the os.

Was it repairing disk or permissions that kept giving different errors?
I think this was available in 10.5 installs, but can't check... hit CMD+L before starting the Install or right after, that should show a log of what exactly is going on.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Wiped my entire macbook drive and now snow leopard won't install over snow leopard server, HELP!

I ordered, what I thought, was Snow Leopard a while ago because I was running Leopard and I wanted to get the app store so I could move onto Lion and then Mountain Lion. I ordered the disc over the phone and the woman sent me the Snow Leopard Server instead of just Snow Leopard, I didn't think much about it so I clean installed it and ran it on my unibody macbook for a while. I didn't see much use for the disc anymore seeing that everything was downloadable at this point, so I sold the disc on Ebay and carried on. The server edition started to slow my computer down due to all of its excess applications and what not, and I read online that Lion and Mountain Lion are also very slow on the old unibody Macbooks so I ordered a regular Snow Leopard disc, now available online, and tried to install it. My computer said Snow Leopard cannot be installed over Snow Leopard server so I went to disc utitlity and wiped my entire drive while the OS X Snow Leopard disc was running and trying to install. I went back to the install window and it still said OS X Snow leopard cannot be installed over Snow Leopard Server so I shut down my computer and tried to turn it back on and I all I got was a blinking folder with a question mark in it, what do I do????????
P.S. All of my content is backed up on an external harddrive so I am all good with that.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has finished quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • Snow Leopard Won't Install

I get maybe 15 minutes into the install, and my MacBook restarts; Snow Leopard is not installed. I didn't notice any error message before this happened.
    This happened 3 times.

    Greetings,
It takes around 45 minutes for the install to complete. After the first 15 minutes, or so, it will reboot, and then continue the installation. Hopefully you didn't interrupt it at a critical moment.
If you did and it won't boot at all, you may have to insert the DVD in the drive, start it up, and hold the "C" key down until you see the Apple, and little spinning graphic.
After it boots in to the DVD, then install.
    Cheers,
    M.
