Less Cache

Why is there less cache in the newer models. Here the spec for the old version.
The Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.2 13-Inch (Black - Late 2007/Santa Rosa) features a 2.2 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (T7500), with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, a 4 MB shared "on chip" level 2 cache, an 800 MHz frontside bus,
Here the spec for the latest model. Is there a big difference , there say you getting more and more speed. But to me it look like there going backwards.
2.1GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
800MHz frontside bus

Intel hasn't reduced the cache on the Penryn processor per se. They offer Penryn CPUs with both 3MB and 6MB caches, dependent on CPU speed, for computers using an 800MHz bus. The 2 lower speed CPUs (2.1GHz and 2.4GHz) come with 3MB while the next two steps (2.5 and 2.6GHz) come with the full 6MB cache. Heat may have been one consideration.

For Apple, I suppose this may make it slightly easier to add a wee bit more distance between the MB and the MB Pro (middle and higher end ones anyway).

  • Compressing data when written to disk not when written to cache

I am doing a lot of compression before the data is written to the JE. This compression will have lots of CPU overhead. I was wondering when the data was stored to the JE cache it could be uncompressed but when the JE decided to persist that data I could then compress it.

    Hi Chad,
No, there is no way to compress on disk but not in the cache. We may add this capability at a future date, but it would likely be part of built-in compression. There is no firm plan for doing this work.
I understand that you may not want to incur the CPU overhead of compress and decompress every time an item is retrieved from or stored into the cache. However, keeping items compressed in the cache has the advantage of using less cache memory -- more items fit in cache. This is, for many applications, at least as important as compression on disk. So there is a trade-off.

  • How to calculate cache size?

    Hi,
Once I deploy my application, I check the cache viewer and the cache size does not match app size.
    Cache size 8085
    Size: 8085
After minor update (versioned + jardiff) of one of the the jars.
    Cache size: 14543
    Size: 8267
Based on the viewer, I upgraded 1 jar file from 8084kb to 8266kb. The real sizes are 7539 and 7718.
What is the logic/math behind this?

Reason why update makes the size almost double although you just sent 200kb jardiff is cause jardiff is just the way you're transfering, anyway the client stores two versions (of almost identical size).
The single file size difference may be because, if you actually browse the cache you'll see files are not stored as-is, plus you get some additional 'index' flie for each jar, never the less cache viewer may be showing on-disk size (that is bigger).
    Bye.

  • G4 Cpu Cache and Speed, what to go for

I want to do a cpu upgrade, at least 1.6 Ghz... I don't know if I should get one with 512kb cache or 2 Mb? Take a 1.8Ghz with less cache of a 1.6Ghz with more? I don't have a budget but the lower the price the faster I get the cpu...
It's for my Gigagit ethernet, I'd like to play doom 3 and quake 4 on it, don't know if that will ever happen, but HD, Video, DVD, RAM are all good, only the cpu...
Anyone knows what I should get?

http://www.macsales.com/ is a good place to go for older Mac upgrades. As for the CPU, look at what they have to offer, although I recommend the Sonnet upgrades (they come in models of 1Ghz, 1.4Ghz, and 1.8Ghz on that site although there are other choices) myself since thats what I purchased over a year and half ago to upgrade my aging Power Mac G4.
    CPU upgrade list...

The choice you make is more of a cost consideration more than anything else when it comes to upgrades of this nature, and how long you are going to keep using the machine.

  • How to create ALIAS on Macbook Pro? Samples?

    Here are the directions....
The installer creates a sound library folder at “/Library/Application
Support/UVISoundBanks/”. All sound library must be copied or aliased to this
folder so UVI Workstation can access to the contents easily.
So, I want to install the sample set onto an external hard drive but it seems that the program points to the above folder.
So how to I move them to the right hard drive and then have the above point to it so I can run the samples without problem.
Also, what is a fair price to pay for a MBPro, 2.4, 6 months old, pre new touch pad, the one with extra on-board cache (4MB) before it went to 3MB. It's the machine that was 2.4 at $2499 about 6 months ago, then they came out with the new touch and the 2.4 with less cache, became the $1999 model.
Thanks, its in good condition and Macbook Pro's retain decent value.
    Thanks for your help.

Simply put(copy) the content of the UVIsoundbaks folder to where you want it. Then delete the original content. Make aliases of the content at its' new location, and move (copy) all those aliases back into the originating folders. Then delete the original aliases. That should do it.
    I'm confused about this.
First, I put the content where I want. Got it.
    Then delete it?
I don't have the room to put it where the application tells me to put it (not enough room on the HD), so I need to put the sample content on a external hard drive.

  • Cisco ISE inline posture node Posture assessment query

    Hi all,
i read the user guide for the ISE 1.1 and in the Inline posture section, I picked up the following text which concerned me if I understand it right...
"In a deployment, such as outlined in the example, when more endpoints connect to the wireless network
they are likely to fall into one of the identity groups that already have authenticated and authorized users
    connected to the network.
For instance, there may be an employee, executive, and guest that have been granted access through the
outlined steps. This situation means that the respective restrictive or full-access profiles for those ID
groups have already been installed on the Inline Posture node. The subsequent endpoint authentication
and authorization uses the existing installed profiles on the Inline Posture node, unless the original
profiles have been modified at the Cisco ISE policy configuration. In the latter case, the modified profile
with ACL is downloaded and installed on the Inline Posture node, replacing the previous version."
Does this mean that if a corporate user VPNs in and successfully passes posture and gets a dACL applied to the session allowing full access, will the next user completely skip posture assessment and granted full access to the network if they are a member of the same AD group?
I am planning on using the iPEP for posturing VPN clients and using AD groups to determine the correct dACL to apply to a particular VPN session.
    Thanks!
    Mario

I'm not too familiar with the actual operations of the Inline Posture node, but it seems to me that the only things that are more or less "cached" are the authentication and authorization profiles that have been previously matched. So, even if they're "cached" and a endpoint matches and authorizes based on those policies, it would match on the policy that provides a pre-posture state. So, a PRE-POSTURE ACL would be pushed and an URL redirect would also occur to the NAC agent download portal (if the endpoint doesn't have it already).
After posture is assessed, a change of authorization would occur and reauthorize that endpoint's session.
So, in short, even if the profiles are cached, they only deliver pre-posture profiles. After posture assessment, the endpoint is goes through reauth via CoA.
If you have access to the partner education connection, I suggest checking out the VoE deep dive series for ISE. There's a posture presentation that would probably help you out.

  • Lr 3.4.1, moovies, and nas-volume

    a small bug-report:
i have a network storage for my pictures, and inside the are a few quicktime-moovies. Trying to import this network volume to Lightroom 3.4.1 showed me, that moovies cannot be imported. The pictures itself imported in a reasonable amount of time, but as soon as there are moovies inside the nas-volumes, it worked and worked and worked, overnight, the next day. No progress visible.
I created a new catalog, moved the moovies from nas to local hard disk, and imported the nas-volume again. Success, in a few hours all was imported.
Then i imported the moovies from local hard disk. Again success, worked fine within a few minutes. The last thing i had to do is to tell Lightroom the new (ahem, old) storage place for the moovies.
Is there any tricky workaround that can import moovies direct from a nas volume?
    Greetings from Gemany
    Christian Stüben

LR 3.4.1 may write keywords differently than previous versions due to fixing an error with corrupting metadata so there could be a bug particular to LR 3.4.1, but Adobe needs to be able to repeat it with a simple example in their facilities or hear enough reports of it that they feel there is an issue and they can find a problem with their code.  From what you've said (except the unexplained situation about how it didn't work to move the file from your USB to your C drive) everything points to your USB drive having an issue, though.
Adobe would likely want to do a remote troubleshooting session on your computer unless they've already diagnosed the issue on another computer.  You might try posting your issue on the more official "Feedback" forum that Adobe seems to look at more:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightro om
but be ready for the same skepticism and litany of questions that you've gotten here.
The intermittency is your biggest issue to getting anything resolved.  A reason for intermittency could be a timing problem where some other process like a virus-scanner, or a media-scanner, or some other thread in LR, itself, like the preview-generating thread, is accessing your image at the point that LR is trying to write the keywords to the image file, or the fact that the image is in disk cache or not, where a USB-drive would have less cache than an internal drive and access is generally much slower via USB than internal IDE or SATA drives.
As a way to see if it happens on more than just your particular USB drive, try everything on a memory-card in a card-reader to simulate a USB-drive.  If you can get that to work then there's a little more hope in someone else repeating it.  Be prepared to give a step-by-step procedure from virgin-JPG prior to import up until the error-message is received with specific keywords and keystrokes used to get the error.  Be prepared to provide an example JPG, too.

  • Late 07 vs. Early 08: Please help

A friend offered me a pick between a late 07 and early 08 macbook pro. I remember the early 08 has a penryn chip and less cache.
Which one is better to have? Thanks

    legaleye300,
Well, I've gone back and looked at the graphics specs for both models, and it does appear that the older 8600Ms also had DDR3 GRAM. At the time of the early '08 release, there was much mention of the newer GPU's better performance, over the earlier version of the same GPU. So, there must be something else about it that boosts its performance. All of the new models (new in early '08) did come with more GRAM, "stock," but it doesn't seem to me that this alone would account for the higher performance.
The benchmarks I saw at the time amounted to around 140% of the graphics performance of the previous generation, and fully 200% of the even older Macbook Pros with the X1600. My own experience, comparing my early '08 to its X1600 predecessor, bore this out.
Regardless of the "little details," there are distinct advantages to the early '08 models, above and beyond the addition of multi-touch capabilities.

  • Archiving an iMovie Project

    Howdy All,
    For iMovie 6:
    1. "Burn Project to Disc..." in iMovie sounds like it would burn all the files (maybe less cache files) in the iMovie project, as a package say, so you could reload it and it would be just like before (less cache files). Is this true?
    2. "Burn Project to Disc..." seems to be limited to one optical disc. Is this true? If so, this seems to be a severe limitation, most projects I have done using DV are easily bigger than what a DL disc can hold.
    3. If I archive the iMovie project via some other means (e.g. using Toast) will the project contain all the required resources (except, possibly fonts)? Assuming movies added to the project don't reference external movies!
Thanks in advance for any specific answers to these questions.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

    1. Yes, it's still editable.
    2. Unfortunately, you are limited to one disc.
    3. I use Toast 7, which can span multiple discs. (Toast 8 can, too). NOTE: Use the "Data" pane in Toast, NOT the "video pane". You also need to backup all third-party plug-ins and fonts you may have.

  • Can I re-arrange HDD's without lost of data?

I'm using an Apple Xserve RAID with 6 Samsung HDD's in RAID 0 mode connected only to one of the two controllers because of lack of RAM on the second controller (the first one has 512mb and the other only 128mb). Unfortunately the current speed of data transfer witch is about 125mb/s doesn't completely satisfy my needs and I’ll have to use the second controller. So I intend to connect 3 hard drives to each controller and here comes my question - if I simply move the three hard drives to the other controller, shall I loose any data or the Xserve is intelligent enough to see what I've done and merge the drives so they can be used again without the need of being formatted again and losing my data? The second controller is already upgraded to 512mb of RAM.
Thank you in advance for your opinions!
    Regards,
    Andy

William's right. The second you pull any single drive from that 6 drive raid 0, that data's toast. The data may still on the drive, but the array is gone and you're not going to have any way of getting to it. We once had to reset a controller, and one of our new guys didnt know you had to jam the thing in pretty hard so it snapped properly, and surely enough, when we booted it back up, 2 of the drives on our raid 5 went red. When we powered it down, reseated it properly and powered it back on, surely enough, even though the data was all still there, that array was long gone. Im not quite sure about the utilities option to rediscover an array and how its worked for others, but it's never worked for us.
With that said, I don't see how (2) 3 drive raid 0's stripped together is going to perform better than a 6 drive raid 0, especially if the 2nd controller has less cache than the first. Cache aside, you're pretty much taking your 125MB/s, slicing it in 2 by spliting up the drives, and multiplying it by 2 when striping them together, so you're back where you're started.
I'd start out by getting another drive, backing up your stuff, making it a 7 drive raid 5 to get some redundancy at least, and it'll go a slight bit faster... if you need it going faster than that, bite the bullet and fill both sides.

  • HP DV6 6016/6017 TX recommended for gaming ?

could you please suggest whether i should go for HP DV6 6016/ 6017 Tx for gaming.

    Dirt 2
    NFS Hot pursuit Shift

    KB, welcome to the forum.
I have never used a laptop for gaming.  However, from reading the specs of both laptops and reviewing videos of different games being played with each video card, I personally would choose the dv6017tx.  The 6016 has a faster appearing CPU, however, it has less Cache.  I am not certain that you will be able to play COD on the highest video settings.  Also, be certain to do all you can to keep it cool.  Laptops can get very hot when gaming,
Please let us know if this solves your problem or not.

  • Mega 400 and MCE

    Hi guys,
I built a (very) budget media center PC and have several problems. First of all I think my TV tuner card is overheating, because when I watch tv, after a few minutes/hours, the framerate drops and the video and sound aren't synchronized anymore. Also, I can't watch TV in Windows Media Center, it gives me an error that my video decoder is malfunctioning, while I tried several of them (PowerDVD, WinDVD, NVidia DVD Decoder), so I'm starting to suspect that the hardware doesn't support MCE or the video decoder(onboard video perhaps?)
    Here are my specs:
    MSI Mega PC 400
    Amd Sempron 2200+
256 MB Ram, of which 64 MB are Video Memory <-- :( It was supposed to be 512 MB but some of the memory I got doesn't work properly)
    Video/Sound onboard
    Hauppage PVR150 MCE
    Any Suggestions?

I have no experience with the Mega 400. However I'll make a few observations...
To determine if it's a heat problem leave the covers off and blow a fan at it. Also what temps are being reported in the LCD app ? However I don't think that's the problem.
256 MB memory is not enough.  The Mega 180 on board video needs 128 MB to work properly with MCE. If you do that you won't have enough for a properly working XP system. Get up to 512 MB and your problems may go away.
The Sempron 2200+ is proabably a little too slow. When I got my Mega 180 I first tried an Athlon 2500+. At times the video playback was jerky. When I put my current 2800+ in everything worked fine. In addition the Sempron has less cache than the Athlon...
So the bottom line as I see it is you have a  slowish CPU with not enough cache and not enough memory.

  • CPU Support for 945P Neo5-F

I have read the CPU Support list for 945P Neo5-F. My question is do you have do a bios upgrade to run any of the CPU's listed or will they run with the factory bios. Will a CPU with a CPU code not listed work?  Board is in the mail. don't know what bios is installed. Looking to pick up a CPU before the board gets here, want to make sure it will work.  Don't want to buy another CPU just to install a Bios update.
    Thanks Senkoboy .......

And here I allways thought Celeron for the most part was the lower cost versions with less cache memory than the Pentiums. Like the Sempron compared to Athlon in AMD.

Cache Hit ratio 47.99The fact that you get two different values for "the same thing" is a clue that (a) your SQL statement is suspect and (b) your logic is flawed.
You SQL is going to give you some kind of (meaningless) average since the database started up. The report you showed looks like part of an AWR or statspack report which will be covering a short interval of time. The difference between the two percentages may mean the two approaches are using different formula, or it may mean that the result is highly dependent on the time window.
Since you have access to AWR/statspack - run off a report for a (short) interval when the system is performing well, and for when the system is performing badly, and compare them.
As a starting point you could post the two sections "Load Profile" and "Top 5 Timed Events" to the forum for initial comment. If you do so, please make sure you use the "code" tags (see end of post) to make the output readable or you may get no replies.
