LESS MEMORY THAN IT SHOULD!

I have recently bought a 4gb Nano, however, when connected to itunes I am told that there is only 3.79gb available. I've tried "Restoring" it but it made no difference. Is there any way I can access the full 4gb that I thought i'd bought?
Many Thanks

"One more thing about iPod disk size
In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."
~3.79GB is the correct size.

  • "Safari can't cnnnect to the server" less often than it should

Very recently, I've had increasing difficulties acccessing certain sites, which respond with a "Safari can't connect to the server." However, when I use a different Mac, there's no problem connecting.
This is a big problem when going to an official site like MacUpdate or Versiontracker. If I try to download, say, a demo of iDefrag, I frequently get the error message. But it happens more frequently than it should with simple web surfing on sites (like http://www.jdorama.com/) I know are online.
Aside from the recent Security Update, the only major change in my system has been that my ISP bumped my DSL speed from about 1.6mb/s to 2.1mb/s.
What might be causing this problem?

Thanks. My hunch is your settings need some refinement. Try these suggestions in your System Preferences> Network panel (I'm assuming you are using the TCP panel for your IP address etc.)
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked, unless you use a Bluetooth device.. Move Ethernet to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.
Give these a try and let me know if you see any improvement.

  • Camera takes more memory than it should

I deleted a load of music and photos to update to the ISO 8 and half way through the update it cut out and restarted my phone
found out the reason it stopped was because i don't have enough memory on my phone (which I did before the update)
the culprit seems seems to be my camera roll. All I have is 284 things in it (inc vids and pics) and that takes up 4.1gb of memory. I can't remember what the memory was before it cut out but it can't have been that much because I was able to initially start the update
is there anything I can do without connecting to iTunes on my laptop as my laptop is broke and if I plug my iphone into my girlfriends then my phone will be wiped (that's what I presume anyway as it happened before)
thanks for taking the time to read this and any help will be greatly appreciated

That MacBook Pro should be plenty of power for iMovie. However, she will likely need an external drive to hold her Events.
Assuming that she has a high definition AVCHD camcorder, the camcorder will record in a highly compressed format called AVCHD. It will about 1 full frame of high definition video per second. The rest of the frames contain information like "what has changed since the last frame?", what is the direction of motion?, etc.
This is great for capture, but not so good for editing, because you might want to edit starting at one of the compressed frames.
When you import AVCHD to iMovie, it converts all the frames into full frames. This way you can edit any frame without a big load on the processor. This means that when you import, the file size will be about 10x bigger than it was on the camera.
She will need an external drive. It must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). You can buy them off the shelf like this, or you can buy a FAT32 drive and reformat it with Disk Utility.
I recommend that you start with a 1TB drive that connects with Firewire 800, FW400, or USB.

My 2006 has old (buggy) EFI ROMs and only supported 1.9GB RAM (even though showed all 8GB as physically there) with 32-bit Vista and 7.
64-bit does have much better. Any reason why not use it? if you bought retail you have both 32 and 64-bit DVD media already.
I can't say I fully understand why though even Macs have system hardware "space" but not part of the user installed memory.

  • SQL server 2012 Ent using less memory than the allocated amount after enabling -T834

I am facing the situation mentioned here.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2009/06/05/sql-server-and-large-pages-explained.aspx
My SQL Server 2012 is not able to use all the 112 GB RAM that was allocated to it after enabling -T834.
This was not the case earlier. Now I see the Total server memory and target server memory counters are just 27 GB constantly. I found the below error while starting SQL after enabling -T834. I restarted services again and this time it started fine. But I
didnt bother about the error untill users complained slowness and SQL memory usage was found to be low.
Detected 131068 MB of RAM. This is an informational message; no user action is required.
Using large pages in the memory manager.

Unable to allocate enough memory to start 'SQL OS Boot'. Reduce non-essential memory load or increase system memory.
Now, SQL is started by its Total server memory is only 27 GB. How can I make SQL server use all the allocated max server memory with -T834 still on ?

    Hi Bharath ,
in the below post the scenario is mentioned clearly
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2009/06/05/sql-server-and-large-pages-explained.aspx
Unable to allocate enough memory to start 'SQL OS Boot'. Reduce non-essential memory load or increase system memory.
This shows one of the problems with large pages: the memory size requested must be contiguous. This is called out very nicely at the MSDN
    article on Large Pages
    These memory regions may be difficult to obtain after the system has been running for a long time because the space for each large page must be contiguous, but the memory may have become fragmented. This is an expensive operation;
therefore, applications should avoid making repeated large page allocations and allocate them all one time at startup instead.
In this case above, even if ‘max server memory’ was set to say 8Gb, the server could only allocate 2Gb and that now becomes a maximum allocation for the buffer pool. Remember we don’t grow the buffer pool when using large pages so whatever memory we allocate
at startup is the max you get.
The other interesting thing you will find out with large pages is a possible slowdown in server startup time. Notice in the ERRORLOG entry above the gap of 7 minutes between the server discovering trace flag 834 was on (the "Using large pages..” message)
and the message about how much large memory was allocated for the buffer pool. Not only does it take a long time to call VirtualAlloc() but in the case where we cannot allocate total physical memory or ‘max server memory” we attempt to allocate lower values
several times before either finding one that works or failing to start. We have had some customers report the time to start the server when using trace flag 834 was over 30 minutes.

  • Itunes shows less memory than on my Ipod

I just purchased an Ipod picture/video 30gb, I have loaded 3376 songs into Itunes and Ipod so far, no pic's or videos, which comes out to 12.13gb. One day I received a "corrupt file" message in the bottom of my computer related to my Ipod. Itunes and Ipod still run ok, but now my Ipod indicates it only has about 4.6gb of memory remaining from Itunes. I checked memory on my Ipod and it is accurate stating 12.13gb have been used. Why is Itunes indicating that I only have 4.6gb remaining on my Ipod, is there a way to fix this?

How do you get the audio from a TV show if the show doesn't appear on the iPod? Is it that the show really is there but that the video doesn't appear? If that's the case, check your TV Out setting.

  • IPod Showing Less Space Than It Should

    Hi
I've got a 4G 40GB iPod which I use for both music and storing data. Now I've just removed a few GBs of work I had stored on there leaving only about 100 MB of files. My iTunes library comes to 33GB but my iPod says I only have 700 MB spare.
Now I know its capacity is really only about 37GB but that should still leave me with another 3Gb of current free space.
Are there some kind of hidden files or have the files I moved to the trash not actually been removed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have less space than I should

I recently deleted my 50 gb parallels partition, but I didn't get any space back. My Macintosh HD says that it's size is 171.15 gb, and If I try to make a boot camp partition, It only says 80 gb left (250 gb ssd). But If I go to more info, It says 60 gb used. When I used super dupe rto back it up though, It backed up 171.15 gb. Any ideas? I had 125 gb before I installed windows with parallels 5 days ago.

    > I recently deleted my 50 gb parallels partition
Unless you were using a physical partition created by Boot Camp Assistant so you could dual boot and run Windows natively, all you did was remove a file.
And the way to remove Boot Camp Assistant partitions is, from BCA again.
If you used Disk Utility, you should try Lion Recovery or your OS X DVD to "stretch" the main HFS volume to the full hard drive (SSD) space. But Disk Utility is not how you properly want to 'delete' a partition.
And based on SD, it sounds like you still have Parallels.

  • SCAN_Op returns one less sample than expected.

I'm acquiring data from a SCXI chassis using a WinXP P4 computer. Sometimes when I run my app, SCAN_Op returns one less sample than it should. Looking at the data array, it appears that one sample is missing down in the array where there should be a reading from the first channel. The rest of the readings are all shifted up by one and the first of these is garbage. The rest are correct. This only happens some of the time, but when it does, it happens no matter how many modules I'm using in the chassis (I've tried up to three at once). It also happens using just one high voltage module, As a result, the data I send to SCAN_Demux is incorrect and comes out scrambled. I've checked my inputs to the function repeatedly and am confid
ent they are correct. I am in debug mode when this happens. So far, I haven't seen it happen in release mode. Has anyone seen this condition?

    Hello,
I am not sure exactly what could be causing this problem. However, we could try something.
Try allocating your memory as an i32 array that is half the size of the array that you want. This will force memory to be allocated slightly differently. Then just typecast your array whenever you need to use it.
I know this has fixed some alignment issues in the past.
Let us know if this does not work.

  • Syncing to iPod Touch results in the display of 1 less playlist than synced

I just restored my iPod Touch 2G which successfully resolved a double event issue in Calendar. However, now my iPod is displaying 1 less playlist than it should. It doesn't seem (at this point) to follow any stringent pattern of the playlist which is not displayed, but all of the songs are synced correctly.
If I sync 10 playlists, it syncs the songs for 10, but displays 9 playlists in the playlists tab in Music. When I uncheck a playlist in iTunes and sync to my iPod, it reduces the # of playlists by 1. So for "n" playlists, the iPod correctly stores "n" worth of songs, but displays "n-1" playlists.

No. Use the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD to create a blank partition for Mac OS X 10.6(or install it onto an external drive) if you need software which won't run in Mac OS X 10.6.
At this point, purchasing Mac OS X 10.5 is generally only useful for people with PowerPC G4 and G5 Macs.

  • Synching iPad to older PC with less memory - it ran out of space when synching movies - how to synch in the future if we can't free up more space (besides buying a new computer)

    In synching ****...
Tried to synch iPad with several movies with a PC that turns out to have less memory than what we were synching.
Turned off synching of movies to try to help the situation...
    WRONG!
Two of our purchased movies were deleted in the synch process.
We got them out of the PCs recycle bin but now how have them on the PC, but not on the iPad.
How do we (a) get the movies back on to the iPad and
    (b) solve the longer-term issue of synching if the PC can't hold as much as the iPad does?

He doent have to , we already know he's got a xp machines, and from the fact that he's able to sync his iPad to it tells me enough, it's enough to know he has the basic requirements to connect an external drive via USB, now we know it's an older machine so it more than likely he's got a ton of .tmp files taking up space, and the fact that he's asking this question makes me think he may not be aware of how to  search the HD via *.tmp from the command line to location and delete those files, so w/o buying a new machine, his only option is intsalling a new Internal or external hard drive.

You have got to be kidding me, Mozilla! You claimed that Firefox 7.0 would consume less memory than its predecessors. Well, FF7.0 does consume less memory, but when I upgraded to Firefox 7.0.1 and used the browser, it now consumes MORE memory than FF7.0 did before, and it is now at nearly 300,000 KB to nearly 500,000 KB! And that was on my first use! The second or other times I used it, Firefox 7.0.1 only consumes less memory, than the first time I used the browser! Mozilla, when will you wise up and fix the memory leaks again?

That is nothing, my Firefox 7.0.1 consumes 2.47GB (2 473 805 KB to be exact) ram with just 2 open tabs...
My system is with 8GB ram and I'm running out of memory...
Most of the time when I browse, the pages load slowly, firefox freezes during scrolling (and assortment of other problems)

Ah, I've just re-read my BT bill and it does indeed say BT Infinity Option 2 !
I took that to mean BT Infinity 2, but maybe it means BT Infinity 1 Option 2 (which gives unlimited usage).
Viewing my account online, it also says "Up to 76Mb download speed" and "Up to 19Mb upload speed", so I think I'm on Infinity 2 but with my IP profile still stuck at the same 38.72 that I was originally given.
    Anyway, to re-phrase my dilemma......
Since I'm consistently hitting the IP Profile ceiling, I feel that my line MIGHT be capable of running faster if it were allowed.
What I don't want to do is apply for the no-cost "up to 76" option, and the discover that the line is not so stable.
When I originally signed up, I was told to expect about 26 down speed, so BT obviously thought that my line would not be good enough for 38 even.
I suppose I'm really asking if anyone has gone from 38 to 76, and regretted it because they then got a less stable line, variable speeds, or even consistently lower speeds (or maybe for any ther reasons).
Or, maybe I'm supposed to be getting a faster speed, but just have a "stuck Ip Profile" ?

  • What can I tune to make the database use less memory in a 1GB ram notebook?

    Hi,
Our notebook has 1GB ram only, running Windows XP Pro, Oracle10g Database, Oracle9i Application Server. It consumes about 1.4 - 1.5GB ram where it's already start using the virtual memory, therefore have some performance issue with it especially when try to startup the services.
I'm not a DBA but I would like to get some advice on what and how can I tune the database to use less memory since the notebook is used for demo application only, so we save memory resource and make the notebook runs faster.
    Please advise.

In your case you could use 10g on XP. The only XP not supported is Home Edition.
Coming back to the issue, since 9iR2 Oracle recommendation is to provide 1G for each AS node (infrastructure and middle tier). If you have this on the same box, by itself on the Enterprise install will consume more than 1G.
Tuning 10g database won't make much difference. If you install AS 10gR2 it includes a 10gR1 Database as infrastructure database you could use for demo purposes.
