Lessons Learned building Ideation with PS2010

Does anyone have any tips or lessons learned after implementing Ideation with Project Server 2010? The only relevant posts I found are:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/projectserver/en-US/5b0730c5-6d91-44e5-8b32-d91aadbedb48/innovation-process-management-2010-solution-starter?forum=projectserver2010general
http://blogs.technet.com/b/cbortlik/archive/2011/10/28/innovation-management-and-ideation-solutions-with-sharepoint-and-project-server.aspx
In 2013, ideation is supported OOB and I know in 2010 you have to develop a custom solution.
Thanks!

Hello,
My $0.50 contribution, i wrote a blog post on the project ideation feature of Project Server, hope this helps:

  • Lessons learned replacing ThinkPad HDD with an SSD

Installing a Samsung SSD on my 3 year old ThinkPad W510 was easy. Getting Windows 7 set up took me days.
Here are some lessons learned so you can do it faster.
    Backup
Lenovo Rescue & Recovery will back up files to a USB 3.0 disk but it took 10+ hours and it put several files and folders at the top level. Can it back up multiple disks (HDD and SSD)? Probably not.
    Backup
Windows 7 Backup & Restore doesn’t have those problems backing up data files but when trying to save a disk image to an external drive that’s > 2 TB (with 4K blocks), it runs for a while then fails. The generic error message and event log are not helpful, costing hours of debugging.
    SSD “frozen”
Some web sites say that an SSD will perform better if you fully erase it before installing the OS, but when I tried to do this, the Samsung Magician software said the SSD was “frozen.” Apparently this is a confusing way to say it’s locked from erasure. Magician’s workaround recommendations didn’t help. Magician’s PDF guide has alternate workaround recommendations (like turning of AHCI mode in BIOS) but I didn’t find them soon enough.
Clone the HDD or install fresh?
Restoring Lenovo’s factory disk image onto the SSD (instead of cloning the HDD) fixed accumulated problems but it took several days of work and problem solving. (The HDD’s hidden SYSTEM_DRV partition was full. Did that cause some of the problems?)
    How to over-provision the SSD
“Over-provisioning” boosts an SSD’s sustained write performance by allocating temporary space. The Samsung Magician program will set this up -- but not on a drive with the Lenovo_Recovery “Q:” partition. Moving and resizing C: and Q: with GParted Live didn’t solve this. Instead it made me start all over restoring the factory disk image and the Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates. The solution (thanks, Samsung’s phone tech support!) is to use GParted or Windows Disk Management to shrink the C: partition. All it needs is some unallocated space between partitions anywhere on the SSD. (Samsung recommends 10%.) You don’t have to do anything to allocate that space to the purpose.
    Partition alignment
For speed, you want the partitions aligned on a 4096 byte boundary. GParted will align them on a MiB boundary, which is more than adequate.
    Windows restore points
The Windows installer is supposed to make system restore points but I found it started out with a broken configuration. So open System Properties, the System Protection tab, and check the “available drives” for any drives labelled “... (Missing)”. Turn off “system protection” (restore points) for the “missing” drives, then turn it on for the real C:.
    Faster updates
After restoring Lenovo’s factory disk image, you must iterate installing Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates over and over until there aren’t any more to install. Fortunately this is faster on an SSD than an HDD. Save more time by having only one user account and no password so Windows reboot won’t stop for login. Also watch the taskbar for license dialogs that open up behind other windows but require your clicks to proceed.
    Watch for stuck updates
Lenovo Update quietly gets stuck updating Intel WiFi & WiMax software. The fix is to download those installers from lenovo.com, run them, get an error message that it can’t install over the existing software, uninstall the WiFi & WiMax software, then run the installers again.
    Restore from backup, or not?
At key points, I made system disk image backups of the SSD to the old HDD and tried restoring from a backup after the failed repartitioning experiment. But Windows Backup and Restore won’t restore a system image after booting from the destination drive’s recovery partition nor from the source drive’s recovery partition. Since my backup was on the HDD in the Ultradrive bay, I couldn’t boot from the Rescue & Recovery CD. The workaround was to make a bootable System Repair disk on a 512 MB USB key. Windows Backup and Restore then failed with another meaningless error, “The parameter is incorrect. Code: 0x80070057.” Apparently you have to remove the USB key right before starting the system restore operation but that yielded the error, "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found." I’m not sure if that’s a symptom of removing the USB key or yet another problem with Windows Backup and Restore. Maybe it can’t restore to resized partitions? Windows Backup and Restore failed and burned hours of my time.
Fix the annoying request on bootup?
After you install Windows, all its updates, and Samsung Magician, you can use Magician to adjust system settings for SSD performance. Then you’ll find that Magician needs permission to “make changes to this computer” on every boot. Samsung tech support explained that you can then remove Magician from the startup list via msconfig.
    Optimizations
Recomputing the “Windows Experience Index” might make the OS recognize the boot drive as an SSD and disable defrag for it. This didn’t work for me, so be sure to unschedule defrag. Also use msconfig to remove Digital Line Detect from the startup list and turn on “No GUI boot” (no Windows splash screen). Also use power plans Advanced Settings to never turn off the “hard disk.”
    ThinkPad
Thumbs up. Easy to replace the HDD with an SSD and move the HDD into an Ultradrive caddy. Sturdy. Easy to work on. Well documented. Hardware that I didn't want to replace.
    Microsoft Windows 7
Thumbs down. Buggy, fragile, over complicated, inadequate error messages, painstaking to install, difficult and time consuming to administer, poorly documented, accumulates gunk over time that causes problems, failed backup software, even a fresh install has scary event log errors.
    Lenovo forums & support pages
Very helpful. Sometimes it's good to use Use Google to search them e.g. https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Alenovo.com+"over+provision"
    Samsung 840 EVO SSD
Fine hardware. Some confusions around the Magician software. Great phone tech support. Web support doesn’t work.

I may have confused you: Lenovo provides two tools, 1) one makes DVDs that restore the original out-of-the-box factory image of the entire disk (i.e. System partition, C: + Q: partitions) and 2) Backup and Restore, which is the Lenovo user backup tool that does conventional full disk backups, i.e. with all user customizations, added programs and files. Since my system-generation-to-SSD saga hadn't created the the Q: partition correctly, my only alternative was to create a full up-t-date disk backup with the second Backup and Restore tool that include all the Windows + Lenovo updates, but didn't include extra programs and my user files. This fitted on 5 DVDs, which I will use if ever I reinstall the entire operating system.
Once you get above 100-150 GB of backup volume (I'm at 450 GB right now), the Lenovo Backup and Restore is very slow, so I use the much quicker Windows built-in Backup and Restore program to backup incrementally a system image and all files.

  • Report Generation working on Dev machine but not on Deployment + Lessons learned

I don't do deployments very often with Teststand. But I have to say, I learned a lot from this one from trial and error and help from the message board. I have got my deployment to final work (almost) with these lessons learned:
    1. Create a base installer for the engines and drivers, that way if you need to update it is much smaller.
    2. Dont install Teststand before Labview on a new development machine (not related to this deployment but I did learn that)
    3. Don't have your Testexec window open, alter the Station Globals, then close the window. It just puts them back to the old version (probably my biggest problem).
    4. Paths are extemely important.
I think I have figured it out with much time involved and kept notes of what I have done for future. The ONLY issue I have left is this below. My dev machine works as it should but when I deploy, it does not. FYI- I manually copied over Station Globals, Process model, and Testexec. DO I need something else?
I create serial numbers for my UUT's in the proceses model. It all works fine in development. The serial numbers are generated and the UUT filename is titled [023232232].txt and changes per unit. The path for example lets say is C:\Users\Ryan\Desktop\temp.  A logfile is generated for each and put in that folder.
When I deploy, it does something different. Instead of putting the files into the temp folder, it errors out saying it is in use. If I delete the temp folder, it creates a file called "temp" which contains my text logfile. This file just keeps getting overwritten.
    Any ideas on this?

    Hi SimpleJack,
One way you can ensure that the Report Options you want to have stay with your sequence file is to actually override them using a Sequence File Callback.  I have attached a link to a KnowledgeBase article that walks you through how to add the ReportOptions callback to your sequence and programmatically set the options that you would normally set by going to Configure»Report Options from the Sequence Editor.
Also, to ensure that the correct Process Model is being used with your sequence file after distributing, you can set the Process Model within the Sequence File Properties.  This can be found by going to Edit»Sequence File Properties, and then going to the Advanced tab.  I have attached a screenshot of this window below, as well.  From here, you can set the Model Option to Require Specific Model, which especially comes in handy if you are using your own custom Process Models.
I hope this helps, SimpleJack!  Have a great day!

  • Flash Builder 4 with Flex SDK 4.0 for Intel App Up

There is some misinformation on Intel AppUp and the Melrose FAQ about being able to publish with Flash Builder 4.
    Intel App Up Program Submission
    According to http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/article/adobe-air-packaging-guide-atom-developer-progr am-submissions
"AIR app must be built using Flex Builder 3 with Flex SDK 3.5a.  Currently Flex Builder 4 with Flex SDK 4 is not supported."
    Melrose FAQ
    According to http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/display/melrose/Melrose+Developer+FAQ
"Q: Are there system requirements for enabling try and buy in AIR apps using Melrose?
A: You must have Adobe Flex Builder 3 or greater and Adobe AIR 1.5.3 or greater."
Is the Intel App Up statement correct?  If it is, could I get an explanation why?  I've been waiting for the last 3 months waiting for the Melrose SDK to deploy to Intel App Up and now I can't even submit my application.
    Thanks.

The current version of Melrose supports Flex 3.5 SDK for AIR applications running on AIR 1.5.3 runtime or higher. You can use Adobe Flex Builder 3 with Flex 3.5 SDK or Adobe Flash Builder 4 with Flex 3.5 SDK.
Support for Flex 4.1 SDK for AIR applications running on AIR 2.0 runtime should be available within a few weeks. Please note that we will not be able to support Flex 4.0 SDK because of certain technical challenges.

  • Interest for a lessons learned information page?

    Hi all.
I just want to know if there is any interest in a lessons learned information in the wiki pages.
Idea is to enlighten security minded persons of some of the security holes there are in the system.
However, there is a backside to it and that is that the security holes can be used by evilminded persons.
So. Shall we start this wiki-page in order to help each other with security holes, or is the risk to high?
    Comments are welcome!
    Regards
    Fredrik

    Hi Fredrik and others,
As you have not clearly distinguished between "backdoors" and "pitfalls" is security design, I would be interested in your and any other's ideas on a "Challenge of the (yester)Day" sticky thread.
I have read all threads in this forum and there are some really interesting and challenging ones which remain unanswered (at least, from the poster's point of possibly absent view).
Upfront in the threads listed chronologically (by date) I will add the following comment:
"Only informed answers need respond. Advertizing not allowed.".
That way we can "bounce" high quality questions to the top of the forum... and of course suggestions of threads to add are more than wlecome, and these threads would be more actively moderated for content than others (which will make my "job" easier)?
    Any thoughts?

  • Building Websites with Layers

I have had many problems in building websites with layers,in
particular with Template Changes , I take it that Tables are a more
reliable and better method then using Layers , my concern are that
Tables from what I can see are not as easy to position and when I
go into Layout mode and Try adding table cells I cannot put a Table
cell at the Top of the screen , there is allways a small gap that
leaves a White bar at the top of my website.
So what are the Best Methods .?. Use Frames to dive up your
page then use tables for the majority of the content with the
    occasional layer.?.

    >I have had many problems in building websites with
    layers,in particular
    >with
    > Template Changes
These two are not related. Poor development methods will
    break in new and
confusing ways at the drop of a pin, with no causal
    relationship between the
    two.
    > I take it that Tables are a more reliable and better
    method
Tables are not more reliable, and they are sometimes a better
    way of doing
certain layout requirements. Layers are a poor method to use
    for layer
    period.
    > So what are the Best Methods
Learn HTML and learn tables and learn CSS. There are no magic
    wands here.
You are stuck in this 'layers/frames/tables' mentality. Leave
    that at the
    door.

  • RDBMSRealm Oracle lessons learned

I have been trying to research an ORACLE RDBMSRealm implementation on WL6.1 for
the last few days and realized based on newsgroup postings that this type of implementation
is done by trial and error. I have not completed a full implementation yet, but
following are some lessons that I have learned:
    1) The console display of groups; if groups are added as members to another group,
only one of the member groups are listed in the display. This problem was fixed
by setting "getGroupNewStatement=true" in the RDBMSRealm schema.
    2) The console display of groups also duplicated some of the groups in the display.
This problem was fixed by setting "getGroups=SELECT DISTINCT GM_GROUP, GM_MEMBER
FROM groupmembers ORDER BY GM_GROUP" in the RDBMSRealm schema.
Hopefully these lessons learned can help somebody else.

    Bump.
Something I've noticed with these installs is that you don't want to mess with the indexes in SQL.  All of the installers first confirm that the indexes exist, if they don't the install fails.  We had some indexing work done to improve performance that we had to remove to run through an install.  We found this out by a failed install.
Also, a prerequisite would be to have Full Text Search on.  The Microsoft Search service is a requirement for the installs we went thr

  • BC Sets Lessons Learned

    Hello Everybody,
we are targeting to using BC Sets for a global rollout project. There will be several successive versions of the template.
We have a rough knowledge of BC Sets, we know how to create, activate or check them but we are lacking of experience of how to structure the bc sets apropriatelly to ease the activation and to avoid running into problems when delivering 3rd, 4rth, etc. version.
Can sombody provide me with lessons learned, what is must do what is to avoid?
Do sombody have experiance wit the rest of the customizing which is not bc set compatible and must be delivered together with the bc set package?
    thank you all in advance
    greetings
    roland

    Hi Roland,
The benefit of the capturing the IMG settings in BC set is for easy re-usability.
So the BC set should be created with the proper naming convention to uniquely identify the business process.
    Let us consider some example.
You are doing R/3 implementation. Your company has 75 plants spreading across three company codes.
Out of 75 plants, your pilot lot golive will only for 20 plants. You have gone live with 20 plants. remaining 55 plants yet to go live.
All your configuration settings has been captured in BC sets.
The name of the BC sets are:
    1. Z_SD_ORD_PROCESS---Sale order processing for FG
    2. Z_MM_SUB_PROCESS---Sub contractor material processing
    3. Z_PP_ORD_PROCESS----Production order processing for Semi finished goods.
Now by seeing the name of the BC set we can understand, what kind of IMG settings it contains. (Naming BC set is very important---the BC set should be process centric)
So pick the relevant BC set & active it in your remaining rollout plants.
    Note:
You can parameterize the BC set values when you activating the BC sets in rollout plants

  • Flash Builder Burrito with Hero RUN disappears

In trying to complete the Flex-In-A-Week tutorial series, I found it necessary to install Flash Builder Burrito with Hero for the "professional" features of the network monitor. The install went fine and on first opening the interface looks fine including the |> RUN button being visible.
When I define a new workspace using Switch workspace to where the FIAW files are and open the lesson I am working on the |> RUN button disappears and there is no way to run the code. I can't find any way to get the run button back. I may have to abandon the trail and return to the Flash Builder standard that came with CS5 Web and give up on the network monitor. someone please help.

does anyone know of a replacement for the network monitor? so i can run the standard version.
http://www.riaspace.com Piotr Walczyszyns' Toaster Lite says it does but I can't figure out how to integrate it into the Flash Builder work flow to use as easilly as network monitor appears to work.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Server upgrade -  lessons learned

We are going through an excersise evaluating our enterprise server options moving forward. We are currently running a HP 9000 Super Dome with the 8700 chipset on an Oracle 9i database.  We are also still looking at a platfrom change altogether to IBM P-Series.
In respect to the Superdome we are considering upgrading to the 8900 chip set (as Itanium is not quite where it is supposed to be). Given that this upgrade will be based on the same technology and operating system my take is that this approach may be the less intrusive (compared to changing the platform anp porting to a new ops system).  I am wondering if folks are here with similar experiences and the lessons learned.  Are there any pit falls to watch out for?  Any feedback input is appriciated.
    Thanks
    Stefan

Perhaps that has some level of reality to it. But when it happens to you, no amount of "happy" stories from others fixes the issue that you happen to be suffering through at the moment. I'm sure that many people have seamless experiences, but in my case, I keep running into upgrade issues. And they seem to be all over the place as far as problems. No trends; nothing repeatable from upgrade to upgrade. Don't get me wrong, I'm sticking with my Mac; but it's definitely not trouble free for me. If I have learned one major lesson, it will be that I will definitely pay for the extended service next time. I didn't do that the first time because I listened to the "It just Works" claims. But my reality is different. It's funny, whenever Apple issues another update, I actually get a little queasy feeling, knowing that something is going to come back and bite me in the a$$

  • Building portlets with PL/SQl vs java

    Hi
We are planing to use oracle 9iAS application server(Enterprise version)to build portal application.
Can someone suggest me which one should i use, building portlets with j2ee or building portlets with PL/SQL.
what are the advantages of web providers over database providers?which one is the best way of building portlets.

    Hello
I've been using Portal for years now, and I'm still developping in PL/SQL. It's very simple and quick to developp. I'm even not using any database providers, I'm just invoking my procedures via their URLs with some Ajax hidden components, and I could developp some screens like employees vacations managements, trombinoscope, portal statistics, etc ...
I learnt at Oracle how to developp some "true" portlets with DB providers but it's not usefull for me at this time as I don't need portlet customization etc.
    BUT
if I had to developp a really big project with several developpers I would use DB providers.
And maybe I would use Java but it takes rather long time to be efficient with this language and it needs to be a realy big project for I start using this language. And as explained above Java offers more compatibility with 3rd party products.
And last but not least, one has to know what Oracle is more and more dealing with Java, the next 11g version that has just released is much more using Java than 10g does, and that's true for every Oracle products.
So it's just a matter of skill and time.
