Letterboxed FCP output

HELP!!!!
I am a DP who shot a feature film last year. My editing background in NLE is pure AVID. The director edited the film on Final Cut Pro 5 -- we shot with a Canon XL2 in 24p (3:2:2:3) and native 16X9. Now that the film is done, so far, all the director has managed to export are 4X3 anamorphically squeezed DVDs. When we showed one at an IMAX theater with a top of the line DLP, the projector de-anamorphed the picture and played in 16X9. However, all the other monitors and projectors we run into only show a 4X3 squeezed picture.
Now I know there has to be a way to export the final film to a DVD in a de-anamorphic letterboxed 16X9 picture. But HOW????? What settings need to be altered...and to what? The director is a technical idiot, so he will never figure it out and it pains me so to see an otherwise beautiful film shown squeezed.
Could someone explain to me, in simple terms, what needs to be done to get 16X9 letterboxed DVDs from the finished FCP movie???????
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! I AM DESPERATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This film is hitting the festival circuit big-time, and I am embarassed to have it shown in 4X3. It would be a great help if you emailed me the response, rather than me having to check here every day.
Thank You in advance...

There is no "unsqueezed" standard definition 16:9 video.
All standard definition video in 16:9 is anamorphic, so your equipment is working fine. It's just the setup somewhere in the display chains that is wrong. Either the player (dvd/computer) is not giving the right kind of signal bit to the display (you have to set up the player to output to a 4:3 display), or the display does not understand it's recieving an anamorphic signal.
Don't letterbox your picture to a 4:3 frame! You loose an incredible amount of resolution!
My little help page explaines this in nauseating detail (and also how to make a letterboxed version, if you really want that):

  • Canvas brightness doesn't match FCP output files

After spending hundreds of hours trying to color correct in the FCP canvas only to create output files (MPEG2 for DVDs and MOV files for online stuff) which are either too dark or too light, too saturated or too bland, I finally realized that what I'm seeing in my FCP canvas window does not match - at all - the final, compressed file when I export using Compressor to an avi, an mpeg, or a Quicktime MOV file.
I invested in a good Gretamacbeth screen calibration device (Eye-One Display 2) only to find that the problem is not my monitor or its calibration, but the software.
I can output to a Quicktime file and play the same clip, side-by-side, with the identical clip in FCP, as viewed through the canvas, on the same monitor. Invariably the FCP canvas image is darker, has higher contrast, and shows much richer color saturation. The Quicktime movie is too bright, and too washed-out looking in the colors compared with the FCP canvas. And when I output to an mpeg2 and author a DVD using DVD Studio Pro, and then pop the completed DVD into my Mac (or TV/DVD player) and view it, it always turns out much brighter and more washed out than what my FCP canvas had led me to believe.
To try to compensate for this, I manually brightened my monitor somewhat and re-edited my footage, trying to boost luma and chroma levels as much as I could without exceeding broadcast standard limits, only to find that now some of the resulting DVD was oversaturated and too dark. I REALLY need an accurate canvas on which to edit; it's impossible to create anything worthwhile if I have nothing else to do than to simply guess how every clip is going to look and pray that the final result isn't too far off.
Has anyone else encountered this? It's a real problem for me. I'm using FCP 5.04 on a dual-processor G5 with 5 GB of RAM and a dual-monitor setup - an Apple 17" monitor and an Apple 23" cinematic display.
Any input or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks to both of you, Steve and Shane, for your quick replies.
I always render as I go, and I disabled overlays in the canvas long ago. And I realize that calibration is a key issue, especially for web files, and that the view produced in the FCP canvas isn't a full-resolution representation of the underlying digital file.
But when I'm editing my actors' faces and adjusting their colors to get just the right amount of pink rosiness in their cheeks, and carefully setting the right light levels in the background, and then I output my file to any format and view the resulting file on the SAME CRT on which I did my editing, suddenly their faces have lost all their color, and the background is too light and washed out, even though I'm viewing the thing on the same screen I used to edit it.
So no matter how my monitor is calibrated, I believe that any high-quality output file that FCP creates should resemble, at least in terms of color and brightness levels, the image I edited in the canvas moments earlier, at least if viewed on the same screen. I realize that resolution will vary and one might be more blurry or whatever; that's not the problem.
In fact, if I use FCP to create a Quicktime file and an mpeg-2 for a DVD and then view that file on any of my PC monitors and on my television via my DVD player, it looks remarkably consistent. In other words, the output file looks fairly close, in terms of chroma and luma, when viewed either on my Mac (with the Quicktime player), my PC, or even my TV (viewed as a DVD). The only thing that looks different is if I compare this file to the file I edited, as seen on the FCP canvas, where the colors look much richer and the contrast is a lot darker. Even when viewing both files on the same computer screen, one in FCP and the other in Quicktime, the FCP one looks substantially different. Have others run into a similar problem, or is it just me? I can't believe professional editors have to resort to always guessing whether what they see in the canvas will look anything like their final FCP output, at least if they're viewing it on the same monitor.
So I guess I'm really wondering whether there's some way to independently adjust the visible chroma and luma levels in the canvas itself, to configure them properly, so that what I see when I'm editing will more closely match the files I generate when I'm done, when viewing them both on the same screen.
Thanks again for any light (or contrast!) you can shine on this problem.

  • Changing the image shape of an FCP output

    Hey there,
I'm using FCP HD with OS10.4 on a Powermac g5. I generally just work with dv footage.
I want to output a media file that has specific ratio/ dimensions (proportional to 288 pixels wide and 1, 520 pixels high, ie, an unpended rectangle). These have to be the actual dimension of the file/ image, rather than the shape of the image if cropped inside a standard ratio.
How do I control the output ratio/ dimensions? Is this something you can set? I can only see the PAL/ntsc etc ratios... anyone out there help?
    Many thanks!
    Best
    Richard

Not a totally stupid question...I'd assume you have a reason for doing this...
Provided you understand what this is going to do to your image...you would do the following:
File / Export / Using Quicktime Conversion
Format - Quicktime Movie (unless you require some other format)
Click on 'Option' button and click on the 'Settings button in the Video section. You can designate a type of compression...Video, Animation, TGA, DV-NTSC...etc.
Click OK, then click on the 'Size' button in the video section.
Click the Dimensions button and choose Custom at bottom, then type in your 288x1520. You would now choose to select Preserve Aspect ratio using - Letterbox, Crop or Fit within dimensions.
Click OK, OK, name the file and hit save.
Tada...hopefully the image you're working with will look good, either very small or very squeezed...depending on your choice of aspect ratio...and how it's to be presented.

  • Viewing FCP output on HDTV-Suggestions Please?

    Hey All
I have FCP 6.0.6 and Ive been trying to view the output on an HDTV with a Canopus AVAC-100
(yeah its older) I can see it -but it wont play --I have All frames checked and the footage is a
SD output. The video is just froze on the TV.
Am I missing something? Is there something I have to fix in FCP or just breakdown and buy a new
    Matrox MXO2 Mini ??
    Matt

Your Canopus device does not work with HDV.
To monitor HDV in native form, you need a different device to convert the signal from the computer to the monitor.
If you have a MacPro, the least expensive card solution is the BlackMagic Intensity. More expensive are cards from AJA (the Kona Series) and BlackMagic (Decklink)
The Matrox MX02 can be used as long as you have a spare slot for the connection card (can be a MacPro PCIe or a MacBookPro Expresscard34)
The Matrox MXO is connected via a DVI port to drive a second monitor (as long as the monitor is a 23" ACD or 24" Dell).
If you don't want to purchase any devices, FCP6 and up has a setting that will downconvert the HDV timeline to DV for output via firewire. This doesn't show you a very accurate image.

  • Interlaced HD video through HDMI FCP output

    Hi,
I am having difficulties monitoring my video in FCP using a mini dIsplayport to HDMI adaptor.
My footage is shot in 1080 50i and so is my sequence.
The footage was imported via log and transfer, and FCP automatically sets the dominant field to the upper field.
The footage looks fine in the canvas, but if I want to preview the footage on my 42inch TV using the HDMI adaptor, the footage looks bad whenever there is movement (due to the interlacing). I think FCP is only outputting one of the fields, not both, through the displaypot.
I have tried setting the display settings in System Preferences to both 1080p and 1080i.
Is there anything I can do so that I can preview the footage on the big screen as well as I can on my iMac?
    Many thanks

Computer video signals don't do interlacing...not properly at all. That is your issue. You are taking a computer signal from the graphics card and putting that on an HDTV. It won't display interlacing right at all.
For this you need a VIDEO capture card. One that sends out a proper video signal, and not a converted computer one. The low end cards are the Decklink Intensity and the Matrox MXO2 mini.

  • Trouble burning FCP output in DVD SP

Okay, I've gotten little response in the DVD SP discussion forum so I thought I'd ask the FCP wizards...
I've authored the entire DVD with an outputted video (with DVD SP markers) from FCP. Now it's saying I can't do any of that because markers can't be less than 0.4 seconds apart from one another. I've checked my entire track and cannot find any markers that close together. Help! My boss is wondering where the authored DVD is!

    You're kidding.
    Mark Menu
    Marker Dialog
    Marker Help
AND you can Cmd-drag the marker out of timeline ruler.

  • Can FCP output HDV back to tape now? + GOP Gonforming Question

I am having problem with HDV CONFORMED render files being messed up and playing incorrect parts of video or being out of sync and jerking around.
FCP has to conform the HDV stream's GOP back to normal after editing before it can output. Does this apply to compression for DVD as well as output to Tape?
Last time I checked you couldn't output HDV to tape.
    Is this new?

Actually I am having problems with the JVC HDV format and FCP.
FCP scrambles parts of the video in the render files while conforming.
    =====================================================
What workflow did you use to output HDV to tape?
The standard output to tape procedure?

  • FCP output to DigiBeta

Can someone steer me in the right direction here? I need to output footage to DigiBeta, BetaSP etc. Need to know what deck i need.

Thanks for getting back to me. Etc meant etc. Meaning a multi-format deck. <</div>
That doesn't help but I'm not helping either so we're even. You want to talk to a turnkey systems intgrator. This, after all, is the FCP forum.
We have several old BetaSP 1800s. Great decks after all these years. I have never used the bigger dogs. DigiBeta is not cheap, 200 model is $40k baseline. A mutliformat deck as in BetaSX? You don't want one of those. $20k for the baseline. You got the card to provide suitable output to these?
You can drop by B&H's Web site and get an idea of what these puppies cost. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

  • How to hookup TV monitor to DV camcorder for firewire FCP output?

I've read Ken Stone's article on using a firewire output to my camcorder which then plugs into a TV monitor. Will this really work with Motion/FCP?
I believe the caveat is that the project must match the camcorder settings.
Anyway, I'm trying to get video output direct to TV without having to buy a separate video card (I do have a Dazzle firewire unit also that might work also not sure).
I'm finding it to be more and more critical to see my work "live" on a TV monitor -- the burn to DVD, load DVD into player, watch on TV is becoming a big time consumer.
Is this how a cheap persons setup would work? Firewire --> Camcorder ---> TV
    Thanks, Rob.

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • FCP Output to NTSC HD TV -- your basic question

For some reason, I just don't get how to do this. I just want to connect a small HD monitor TV (that has both HDMI and component inputs) to FCP to see the edit as I'm working. I want to do this without using my camera or a DV recorder. How do I do it exactly? What do I need to purchase as far as a interface box. I was considering the BlackMagic HDlink.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Why the Blackmagic Intensity Pro rather than the HDlink? Curious.

  • Canvas brightness doesn't match FCP output files/Matches TIF Still Files!!

Hi, the first part of this problem was addressed earlier in the forum-the fact that the Canvas shows the clips as much much darker and way more saturated than when viewed on an external monitor, or when exported to DVD Studio Pro and burned on dvd.
The second part is that when I export an image from the clip in Final Cut using Quicktime Conversion to Still Image and open up the still in Preview or Photoshop or email it to another computer IT MATCHES the much darker and more saturated canvas. How is this possible? How can I get it to match the video output files?
Any advice asap would be really really appreciated.

You need to understand monitoring... first, a computer's display isn't set up for use as a TV set or video monitor. They don't exhibit the same response color wise to gammas. So it makes perfect sense that viewing a still will match what you saw in the canvas. If you were to look at that still externally on a video monitor, you'd see it also matches the video it came from on that same monitor. Colors aren't shifting, the differences in the displays of that same file is what's causing your consternation.
Always color correct for the medium you wish to exhibit in... so if TV, then correct to an external video monitor which is properly set up. If to the web, then you color correct using computer displays (also properly set up) To further the problem, the gamma responses from a PC's display don't match those of a Mac's display. The PC will see things darker in general... so that too has to be taken into account when judging color, contrast and brightness...

  • *** FCP output settings for Blu-Ray?

I'm not sure if/how this is possible, but I'd like to export one of my HDV sequences and take it to a production house that can burn a Blu-Ray disc for me. Is it possible to do this using FCP/Compressor or should I wait until NAB for hopefully FCP 6?
If it's possible to export an HDV quality master can someone walk me through it? Would it work for them to use a file that I just export as a full-quality self-contained Quicktime movie?
    Thanks in advance.

Talk to the production house of choice. Only they can tell you what they need. Hopefully for you it won't be HDV.

  • FCP output, best resolution to Mobile Me

I have an  6 min edit that is 1920x1080 29.97 apple pro res 422. I want to output it in the best resolution that will upload on my mobil me account (1 gig is max it says) for approval purposes.  How should I go about doing this? Export in QT Conversion and MPEG-4 of some sort?

File - Send to Compressor... find the YOUTUBE setting.
Hit SUBMIT and you are done.
(not exactly... but actually kinda close).  Get past the first bit... show some effort and I'd be happy to help from there.  Plenty of help in the manuals of each of those programs.

  • FCP Output speakers Strange sound question

    I hope somebody reads this.
I compressed my (2 Separate scenes, different timelines, same settings) footage using compressor, "DVD 90 min Best Quality"
I took that footage and put it in DVDSP, put that on the timeline.  Separate both scenes with a chapter marker.
I then built a DVD, I put that DVD in my system, and the 1st scene only plays out of the center speaker and subwoofer, My second scene plays out of all the speakers, (additional speakers are labled "FRONT SPEAKERS" and "SURROUND SPEAKERS" that's they way they are labeled on my Stereo)
It must be some setting, anybody know?
    Thanks!

    Anybody?

  • AV output and non-standard frame sizes

I usually work in non-standard frame size for my FCP projects because my final output will be in a 2:35:1 ratio. I use a Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Monitor as an HDMI output to a client monitor. Up until a few months ago the AV output of FCPX would allow the Mini Monitor to accept a frame size of 1920x818 and letterbox the output to 16x9 on this consumer grade LCD. One day, this just stopped working... I've reached out to Blackmagic and they have no solution or reason why this happened, and are not willing to offer support since what I was achieving wasn't an "officially supported" feature. Now, the AV output will distort the image vertically to fill a 16x9 frame. At this point I am stuck having to use either a matte layer or a widescreen effect on individual clips to output correctly to my monitor which increases edit time having to re-render any edits underneath the matte and having to re-order the letterbox effect after apply color correction etc. It was also very easy to adjust the frame offset with this wide angle project size.
Is anyone editing in 2:35:1 (or other cinema standard) projects and getting successful conversion on output? What are you using?
    Cheers,
    Matt

Thanks Tom, you clarified it .......  or at least something clicked in my brain.
I was trying to set "Custom" when I created the new project.
I didn't know, or had forgotten, that in the "error" window I could select "Custom".
All is now well and FCP X 10.1.1 is pretty clever after all!
There is one weird thing I'd like to mention.
When I clicked on "Custom" the 960 x 600  frame dimensions appeared but the  frame rate was listed as 23.98p as shown in the screenshot below.
    So what's wrong with that?
Well the clip is 30p  and I naturally thought I was going to end up with a project with an incorrect frame rate.
Now here's the funny thing  .........  when I selected the project and viewed it in the Inspector it was the correct 30p
So why was I given that worrying piece of misinformation.
