Letters on Keyboard wearing off

I have an iBook G4 with a british keyboard. i've only had this machine for a matter of months and already the letters on a few of the keys are starting to wear off!! is there anywhere were i could cheaply order a few keys?
in particular i need an "a", "s" and "n". if it is possible to get custom keys made, i'd like a #/€ key (as i remap the chapter/plusminus key to that).

Hey Sam,
im having the very same problem even though iv only had my ibook g4 for just under 5 months. i believe that puts me still under the 1 year warrenty for the computer itself. will they still replace the keyboard if this is the case. if they decide not to do so. i was wondering if anyone here new the part number for the keyboard that is easly installed on the g4 ibooks. if anyone here knows anything on the matter please feel free to email me on this.
as most people can see, i also have a power mac g5 desktop, otherwise called a cheese grader. if you know what i mean. theres very little i dont like apples computers. thats probally why everything in my house is mac related. having 3 ipods, 1 g4 ibook, a power mac g5, isight cam, and lots more. the point here is in the event people are trying to decide what kind of coomputer there wanting to buy. several things need to be considered before you should go out and buy one. obviously price has alot to do with your choice, but in that decision you must also consider whether or not the computer has teachnical type issues. is the company well known for having lots of problems. will you be able to get the technical support you need in the event there is some major problem with the computer that you may be inquiring on. having the apple care protection plan on all of apple's top computers is the single one thing that people dont think about when buying a new brand name computer. i cant tell people enough that buying this apple care plan is vital to the survival of you and your new computer. an extra $200-$400 is well worth the expense down the line.

  • Worn out letters on keyboard

I have had my ibook since April 2005 and use it only for general home use (emails and photos and music) not as a work computer, so it is used i guess for on average about an hour a day.
i have got normal fingers, honestly! but several of the letter stickers on the keyboard have worn off. has anybody else experienced this?? i don't have long nails and type with the pads of my fingers anyway.
i am out of my apple care year long warranty and am having trouble finding a way to contact apple to see if they will provide replacement keys as a goodwill gesture (is that even possible with this keyboard?)
any advice very gratefully received, thanks.

    Hi,
As the other person said, if it's out of warranty, I don't like your chances. However, there is always the option of going to the flagship store on Regent Street and seeing if they will help you.
They won't charge you anything just to look at it at the Genius Bar, so worst case scenario, they say no. I'd also emphasise that the letters started coming off within warranty, but explain why you didn't talk to them at the time.
I have heard of Apple providing free replacement keyboards for out of warranty iBooks because the letters have worn off, so it's worth a try. Otherwise, they may offer to sell you a new keyboard, but its letters will probably wear off in time too. You may want to invest in one of the third-party silicone covers for the new one.

  • How can I repair the the letters  wearing off of my keyboard?.

The letters are wearing off of my 4 year old iMac keyboard.  Is there a good way to mark the keys that will not rub off?  Everything else works great and I would like not to buy a new keyboard if at all possible.

  • Keys getting dirty look--paint wearing off!  What does Apple do for this?

This is dismaying. I received a brand new MacBook Pro (early 2008 model) from Apple only a few months ago and the silver paint on several keys is already wearing off! They're getting that dirty look. See http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=451259
I went through something similar with an old iBook G4... On those, the keys' lettering wore off. Apple service was responsive for sure, although it was pretty silly that they kept sending me replacement keyboards Instead of individual keys or decals. After pushing by me, they even sprung for one of those iSkin plasticky keyboard covers (which turned out it interferes with typing and some say can cause a heat problem). Eventually, they sent me a 4th keyboard that didn't wear out at all. So, it seems that they fixed that issue.
Has Apple solved this paint wearing problem for the MBP's? Do I just go the Apple Care route--again-- and do they send out an entire keyboard? What have other people experience and done?
In this case, obviously, they can't send decals as this keyboard is the backlit (underlit) kind!

This is a known issue with the Early 2008 MBP (as well as earlier models). It has nothing to do with dirty hands, or lotions or hands or anything else. Just from plain old use, it wears down the paint on the keys.
The MBP keyboard keys are no longer removable one by one on that model and onward -- you have to bring your MBP into an Apple Store (or call Apple Care) - they will take it in, change it out for a new keyboard (its under warranty for one year, and if you have Apple Care for two additional years). If you are beyond the one year warranty and did not purchase Apple Care, then you will have to pay to have it replaced (probably a couple hundred dollars plus shipping).
The turnaround for something like that is usually about a week if you have to send it in, and a day if you go to the Apple Store. The Apple Store, after deeming it a repair issue, will order the keyboard. Then they will call you to bring in your MBP and leave it for the time it is required for them to fix it -- usually an afternoon, or overnight.
But this is a well-documented and much discussed issue over the years -- it occured to my old MBP as well. Luckily, I have three apple stores all within a half hour drive of me, so I don't worry about those sorts of things. But it's annoying if you have to send it it.

  • IBook G4 keys wearing off

I had a iBook G3 previously and never had any keys wearing off. When I purchased my iBook G4, within a few weeks I purchased an iSkin for the keyboard. Even with using an iSkin, my keys are still wearing off. A - E - N are half gone. Took about 9 mos for them to wear away. I purchased my G4 iBook in 2005 and it is no longer under warranty.
Is there anyplace that you can go to just purchase individual keys, instead of replacing the entire keyboard? Can you purchase the lettering decals anywhere to replace whenever they wear off?
I am disappointed in Apple for not fixing the manufacturing problems with these keyboards-just sending replacement keyboards if people complain enough while under warranty.
Thanks so much for your help.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   AirPort Extreme

    Hi roswell,
As you are probably aware this is a fairly well documented problem…
As I have AppleCare I had no problem in getting my keyboard replaced, in fact before the first year's warrantee had expired. My replacement doesn't, yet, exhibit the same problem. If you can be bothered to read the whole thread through ('tis a l _ o _ n _ g thread…) you will see that some people have had success in getting their keyboards replaced irrespective of warrantee. All I can say is to contact Customer Services. You're in the lap of the gods
The alternative is to buy a replacement keyboard - they are very easy to fit - from Apple or eBay or www.welovemacs.com who also sell (expensive) replacement key-caps.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

SystemUIServer is a background process that controls some of the user interface. Try opening Activity Monitor, in your Applications>Utilities folder and, in the upper right hand corner, copy and paste SystemUIServer. See how much of your CPU % that it's using. There might be a memory leak with one of the applications that you're running - though I've never seen it with PS CS6 and/or Safari. If it's using even 1% of your CPU, quit the process (it will relaunch).
If you're still running Lion, as your profile says, I would try upgrading to Mountain Lion to see if some - if not all - of your random log-off issues stop. 10.7.4 is not really very stable with the 2012 MBPs and I see a number of processes running that are giving you fits. ML may recitify most of them.
Don't really know what else to tell you - perhaps someone else can come along and comment about some of the other items in your log.

  • My Smart Cover is causing the aluminum to wear off/ipad crashing

About two months ago, I noticed my Smart Cover started to wear the aluminum off. The spot is getting bigger and there are others areas now where it is wearing off. On an unrelated not, my iPad crashes apps ALL the time! Even after resetting it. My one year warranty expired in June 2013.

No one addressed those Apps crashing....
I had a problem with Pages and another Apps crashing all the time.  The advice was to delete the App (data is not effected) and then re-download via wifi from the store in purchases (no charge of course).
    It fixed my problem apps.
If this doesn't fix the Apps then the iPad itself may need to be restored.
PLEASE! do a good backup to a computer first!   Save stuff to dropbox, reduntant backups are okay!
Then restore to factory and then setup as new with backup.

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • T440 external wearing off

Unbelievable! After 1 day of usage (about 3 hours) , I found the external edges of body completely discolored. Looking the locations, it sounds like the wearing off has been due to the palms of my hands but I have never experienced something like that and I am thinking what can be happened. Probably, in the evening, I smeared my hand and arms with one oh those anti mosquitoes spary to reject those annoying mosquitoes and soon after I set to work with this laptop. But I am not sure... I do not belive the spray can be the culprit but really, I do not know what to think about... this accident is so odd. Anyway, please  do you haveome ideas to repaint those areas? What product can I use for a similar job? Just to improve a little bit those unaesthetic areas.
    Thanks

this is probably due to the chemicals in the mosquito repellant reacting with the surface coating on the ThinkPad.

Does the App launch form the Applications Folder rather than the DOCK ?
The icons in the DOCK are links to the App. Sometimes this link can get broken.

    What kind of noise?
The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.

  • Keyboard turning off

I just purchased the apple wireless keyboard. i use it with my 12" PB and a 23" cinema display. However, when i put the computer to sleep, the keyboard eventually will go into sleep mode itself after a few minutes, and when the computer senses "connection lost" from the keyboard it wakes back up. so i put my computer to sleep, the keyboard turns off after awhile, and then the computer automatically turns back on. it's very annoying as i'm trying to sleep because the screen is so bright. i know i could disable allowing bluetooth devices to wake computer, but that is not what i want to do. has this problem been seen anywhere else? any fixes? thanks.

I have a similar problem with a Mini, whose BT reception seems awfully poor with the new AL keyboards and a "Lost Signal" message will appear every 5 minutes (I already replaced the KB once and no dice).
The solution for not having it turning back on the computer is to check off "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" (System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Bluetooth). Note that in doing this you won't be able to hit the keyboard to wake the computer... anyway, I think the real problem isn't that your KB goes to sleep, but that it breaks the wireless link, so the computer complains, your problems does not seem as severe as mine, though.

  • Anti-reflective coating on iPhone camera lense wearing off

In the past few days, I've noticed that the anti-reflective coating on my iPhone lense has begun to wear off in blotches, producing a "rainbow" effect when observed in the proper room lighting. I purchased this phone on June 30, keep it stored in a Marware Sportsuit case that completely envelopes the device, and only use iKlear to clean the device every few days.
Although this doesn't seem to affect photos shot from indoors, it does seem to be producing funny lighting "spots" when shooting outdoors.
I'm curious to know who else out there is noticing this with their iPhone and, if so and you've contacted Apple for assistance, what sort of response did you receive? Was it handled under AppleCare, did you have to send it in or was a replacement provided in-store, etc?
    TIA

Yesterday I made an appt with a genius and we compared my camera with his. Pointed them both side by side at the overhead lights in the Apple Store. We could plainly see the haze on my phone most pronounced on the illuminated signs that say 'Kids', 'Peripherals' or whatever.
The genius said it would have to be sent for repair or replacement - he wasn't sure of course whether they would actually replace the lens or just send me a new iPhone. I'm guessing they'll just send me a new one though b/c it would seem pretty crazy for them to actually repair it. I haven't looked at disassembly photos of the iPhone but maybe the lens cover is part of the back metallic case cover and can be easily swapped out?
Either way I'm sure they'll take care of it. I did get a loaner iPhone and had some minor issues getting that going but that's another story.
Another note - while waiting in the store I checked out another customer's iPhone that was bringing his in for some other problem looked at his lens and it had spots on it that wouldn't come off as well.
While I have the loaner I'm going to experiment with applying some sort of screen protector material to cover the lens so I'm ready to preserve mine when it comes back!

  • IPhones screen wearing off. Is it a major issue?

My iPhone 5 warranty is void so I won't be able to repair it for free. The problem is the screen is wearing off slightly from the Middle right, its just slight + in the dark if the phones brightness is high you can see the light emitting from there. Is this a major problem?

To answer your question more directly, no, it's not a  major problem. All it means is your finger prints will show more easily and you'll end up cleaning the screen more often. A dry microfiber cloth works well and no need to buy any solutions.
