Letting someone access my Web/Public folders via Internet

Hi... How do I let someone remotely (from outside my household network) access files on my computer to download via browser or ftp via the internet?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

You certainly would need to give someone the IP address, that's the only way anyone could find you on the internet. However, here's the problem: your DSL modem has an IP address that is meaningful on the internet as a whole. That is, the IP address of your DSL modem is an address that gives the location of your modem on the internet to anyone, anywhere in the world. Sure, it changes from time to time (unless you pay extra for it not to).
However, the modem acts as a gateway between your computers and the internet. The IP addresses assigned to your computers will be local IP addresses, meaning that they are only meaningful on your home network. This means that, although your DSL modem is "visible" to the outside world, all your computers are hidden behind it and, thus, invisible to the outside world. So, in order to access one of those computers, you must set up port forwarding on the device that has the "real" IP address. Port forwarding basically says "If you get network traffic on a particular port, send that traffic straight on through to a specific IP address on the local network."
Alternatives do exist, though they are primarily designed to allow you access to your own machine. For example, if you have MobileMe and two machines running Leopard, you could use Back to My Mac... but you don't want to give people your MobileMe account information and full access to your computer. You could also try [LogMeIn Free|https://secure.logmein.com/products/free>, but again, I don't think this is designed for giving other people limited access. LogMeIn may have such a service, but I'm betting it's not free.
What would probably be easier, if this is all too tough to wrap your head around or too intimidating, would be to publish the documents you want to share on a web site. If you have a MobileMe account, you can use that.

  • Access refused in public folders when user is in a Group

    Hi,
We have a Exchange 2003 server and an Exchange 2010 server
The Public folders are on the 2003.
Since 2 or 3 days, there is a access issue in juste ONE public folder: SOME users cannot access to the folder anymore if there are in a group (it asks for a login and a password -> if the user enters them, it doesn't work)
BUT the issue is just for some users not all and there are in the SAME group.
The issue is the same with both distribution or security group (and universal).
    Please Help

    Hi,
From your description, I recommend you follow the steps below for troubleshooting:
    1. Please run the Get-PublicFolderAdministrativePermission -Identity "xxx" -User "xxx" cmdlet to check these users' permissions for the public folder.
    2. If they don't have the related permissions, please use the Add-PublicFolderClientPermission -Identity "xxx" -AccessRights xxx -User xxx cmdlet to add the permissions for them.

  • Outlook personal and public folders via Entourage?

I'm the only Mac user in my company and for the most part, this relatively new transition has been seamless. The only tricky part has been with personal and public folders that are currently in Outlook - I can't see them in Entourage. Instead of having an intranet, we have all of our policies, forms, procedures, and general (corporate) information in Public Folders, and then our email accounts are limited and we're instructed to use Personal Folders for any emails that need to be kept longer than 60 days.
Has anyone else run into this, and if so, were you able to find a solution?
    Many thanks,
    Sabrina

I thought Entourage WAS an Apple product.
Nope. M$ product. Always has been.
why we chose to use Entourage instead of Mail in the first place
Possibly because it's closer to Outlook in "feel" and is somewhat easier to configure from an IT perspective (i.e. they don't have to do anything to get Entourage to communicate with an MS Exchange server).
Mail can be configured to work with an Exchange server, either by having IMAP support enabled on the server side, or by configuring mail to access the OWA (Outlook Web Access) server. Your IT group should be able to help there (note that "should" does not necessarily mean "will!).
    Hope this helps...

  • Can I use domain name to access local web (& other) services via VPN?

I've just set up a VPN service for our office but, when connected via VPN, I can't seem to access our Wiki Server via our domain (http://example.private/groups/). Instead it will only let me access it via IP (http://192.168.1.2/groups/)
Is it possible to access it via http://example.private/groups/ and if so what do I need to do?
EDIT: actually, same goes with the local iChat and iCal services too.

Okay, it's sorted. I phone Apple Support.
The solution is to open Server Admin. Go to VPN Settings, then click on the Client Information tab, then add your local DNS server to the DNS Servers list (in our case 192.168.1.2).
I would have expected the Standard configuration of Leopard Server setup to have added this by default, so I'll submit a bug report when I get a chance.

  • Accessing windows server shared folders via IOS devices.

FileExplorer did it! Thanks a bunch.

Looking for suggestions on what route I should go in order to establish connections from IOS devices w/ VPN to windows server 2008 shared folders. Mostly just for employees to upload  files to, downloading isn't a big deal. I'm sure there's apps out there that'll achieve this goal so if I'm correct I'm looking for recommendations! Or if there's a better way entirely.
    Thanks friends.

  • Accessing Server when only connected via Internet Sharing

Currently, I don't have the ability to directly connect my Mac Pro which I use as a Server to the router as I have no direct access to it via cable and it does not have an Airport card.
However, I can access the internet on it if I use internet sharing on my iMac which is connected via Gigabit Ethernet to the Mac Pro at all times.
In order to use any of the services such as Time Machine from another machine, I always need to connect it directly by cable. This leaves me wondering if there is a way to tunnel the Mac Pro through the iMac so it is accessible via Wifi? Is there a setting on either Machine I have to activate / set to make this work?
It is only thought to be a temporary solution until I move to a new flat where it will be directly connected to an Airport Extreme.
    Thanks for your help!

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.

  • Best way to share publc folders via internet w mac and pc

Hope someone can help me. New mac user w/ Macbook pro and osx 4.6. Dont' want to pay for .mac but do want to share large files from my public folder with my kid (ibook) and a close friend(pc w/ xp). want them to be able to copy files as well as leave files for me in the drop box.
I'm connecting to the net using comcast cable internet with a d-link wireless modem and I don't know if this affects the info I should be plugging in. Can I file share from the coffee house or just from home? Wireless seem to work great but can't figure out the best option for file sharing. Have read felix and apple help docs and tried to connect with daughter using apple events, personal file share, etc but asp addresses are not recognized. Maybe I am not using the correct router numbers. Really don't grok ports and TCP too much although I read that TCP is the option on osx 4 and later. I hesitate to turn my firewall all the way off. would it be safer to use stealth mode or would this make it more difficult to connect with trusted friends?
Isn't there some great shareware that can automate this for me? Or can some one walk me through what I should do? Would greatly appreciate your help.

I really like using OS X's built in file sharing tool, this can be enabled in the System Preferences. Here you can learn much more about it and its features.

  • I can't access to my Time Capsule via internet.

    Hey, guys,
I can't access to my TC back home after install Yosemite.
My TC is in Taiwan, and I am in China. With OS 10.9, it work fine.
However, it can't link back to my TC now.
Did anyone know to fix it?
Or anyone have the same problem?
My device are Macbook Air, late 2011, and iPhone 5S, mid 2014.

Here is another person with the same issue.. but it came good all of itself.
Time Capsule remote access disabled with Yosemite?
Are you also using BTMM and iCloud?? Then maybe just be patient.. Yosemite needs to reindex all the files on the TC to use them.. and over an internet connection that may take an Age, Two Ages plus half an age.
Your indexes are lost with the install of Yosemite and it will take ages to re-index.

  • Accessing public folders in the local network

I work with 8 other mac users and we all share files using our Public folders via local network. This is how we typically would access each other's Public folder: open a Finder window, choose Network, then choose the name of the mac that we want to connect to. Then, connect as "Guest". We are all on OS X Tiger.
Recently, one of us upgraded to the OS X Snow Leopard, and we couldn't access her Public folder since the switch. We believe she is on the network, because she has been printing to the network printer and can connect to all of our Public folders. I tried to follow this instruction from Apple Support page to set up file-sharing on her iMac (with Snow Leopard):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/17131.html
I hit a snag at #4 (bullet #2), because I couldn't find "network users" to add to the users list. When the rest of us try to connect to her computer, this is the message that we got:
The alias "Stacey's computer (3)" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Can someone help me with this problem? I have browsed the Discussions and Forums and didn't see anything that was helpful. Thanks!

    HI,
The Snow Leopard user... have her repair disk permissions and see if that helps...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Client-side GW integr.: access other folder than "inbox" and public folders

    Hello,
in our current project the call center employees should work only with the CRM web UI. MS outlook client should run in background, however, they want to access the necessary data out of the CRM UI.
Thus, it would be possible to access other folders than the "inbox". In CRM UI, one is able to transfer e-mails from the MS outlook inbox to CRM including the creation of an activity. However, you can only access the inbox folder, not any other folder, like a subfolder of the inbox folder. Now in the call center mails are routed automatically into subfolders due to dispatching of incoming requests.
Second thing would be to access MS outlook public folders out of the CRM web UI since some kind of knowledge base things are stored there company-wide.
Many thanks for your help & kind regards
    Wolfgang

  • Accounts made in o365 can't access legacy public folders - Migrated through 2010/2013 Hybrid can access

We've added two 2013 hybrid servers to our existing 2010 environment.  Added the CAS role to all 2010 mailbox servers per ( https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249373%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx ) and currently have public folders (located on our
2010 mailbox servers) working in Outlook client for users whose mailboxes have been migrated from on-prem 2010 to o365.  The problem is when we create a new user in o365, that user CAN see that we have public folders via Outlook client, but when we expand
the public folder list a credential window pops up and will not accept any set of credentials (even those of working hybrid migrated accounts).
We are following this method when creating new o365 accounts:
    1) Make a user in AD
    2) Dirsync the user
    3) License the user for exchange
    4) Run on on-prem mailbox server via Exchange Management Shell: Enable-RemoteMailbox "[email protected]" -RemoteRoutingAddress "[email protected]"
    5) In o365 Remote Exchange Powershell run: Get-Mailbox -identity "[email protected]" |fl Identity,ExchangeGUID
    6) Copy ExchangeGUID
    7) Back on on-prem mailbox server via Exchange Management Shell: Set-RemoteMailbox "[email protected]" -ExchangeGUID <paste GUID here>
    8) Dirsync the user again
I've compared two Remote User Mailboxes, ones that were migrated via Hybrid, and ones that were created in o365 and the settings look identical outside of the attribute "RemoteRecipientType" is set to Migrated vs ProvisionMailbox.  I'm not
sure what else the difference in these accounts could possibly be that would be causing this credential failure.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Please do the following steps to create an Exchange Online mailbox in your Hybrid environment:
Method 1: Create a remote mailbox for an existing user.
If you already have created a user in Active Directory, and the user has already been synced to online with license, we can give that user a mailbox in Exchange Online by using the Exchange Management Shell cmdlet Enable-RemoteMailbox on
    your on-premise Exchange server:
    Get-User “User1” | Enable-RemoteMailbox
Then the mailbox is enabled with an Exchange Online mailbox. We can check the mailbox by running the following command in On-premise Exchange server:
    Get-RemoteMailbox “Test1” | FL *address*
Method 2: Directly create a new remote mailbox.
    1. Create the remote mailbox in On-premise Exchange server by running:
    $Credentials = Get-Credential
    New-RemoteMailbox -Name "Test2" -Password $Credentials.Password -UserPrincipalName
    [email protected]
    2. Launch dirsync and assign a license to the newly created user with Office 365 account.
Then Test2 can sign in, using his on premises credentials, and open his online mailbox.

  • Cross-forest access to public folders Exchange 2013-2007

    Dear.
We have an Exchange 2007 org in one forest and an Exchange 2013 org in another forest.
User accounts remain in the 2007 AD, mailbox moved to Exchange 2013 in the other forest, so a linked mailbox.
What do I need to do in the Exchange 2007 public folders to give the migrated mailboxes (not migrated users) access to these public folders?
    Thanks for the support.
    Regards.
Peter Van Keymeulen, IT Infrastructure Solution Architect, www.edeconsulting.be

    Hi Stephen,<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
Do you have trust between Exchange 2007 forest and Exchange 2013 forest? Please set up a trust between the two forests. Then set the public folder client  permission
to see if we can access the
    public folders.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
If not, since Public folder cross forest migration is not supported in from an Exchange 2007/2010 forest to an exchange 2013 forest, refer to forum:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/51da1b97-fbb1-4f81-87da-c3370960c4ab/crossforest-public-folder-migration?forum=exchangesvrdeploy

    So for public folder migration,
the only supported path is cross forest 2007/2010 to 2007/2010 and then inter forest 2007/010 to 2013. Or
we can first export all the public folder to PST from the Exchange 2007 forest, then import the PST to the Exchange 2013 forest.

  • Cannot expand public folders in Outlook but can in OWA

    Hi All,
I have a problem which I hope some one might be able to shed some light on. Firstly, the environment is Exchange 2010 (v 14.01.0438.000) and all clients use Outlook 2007. We have one user in the organisation who recently noticed that he cannot expand public
folders. He had been able to do so a couple of months back but could not pin point the time it stopped working. The error received reads :-
"Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed."
I thought that this might be a permissions issue but this particular user can access the public folders via OWA. Also, my AD account was a copy of this user's and I can access public folders without issue.
I have tried the following so far :-
Tried running Outlook in safe mode
    Tried recreating the Outlook profile.
Tried creating a new Outlook profile on a different client PC.
Tried running Outlook in cached an online modes.
Ran Exchange BPA and found no issues.
Checked ADSIedit for old administrative groups left over from past migrations.
used the test-outlook connectivity cmdlet from powershell which ran it's tests successfully.
This user originally set up all the public folders and was still listed as the owner of all of them.
Tried creating a new public folder.
Checked for an Outlook update that had caused a similar issue.
All the above failed to progress the situation. I have come across posts online that sound very similar, one stated that a Microsoft tech had found a permission that wasn't correct but didn't list which permission and the other related to an update to Outlook
that had triggered it. I can confirm it's not the update and I have checked permissions in the public folder management utility in Exchange. Also, my AD account is a copy of his and I can access the folders without issue.
I have also considered what may have changed on the network recently. The only major change has been a new admin password but I cannot see how that would be relevant.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

Hello John: We are having the exact same issue. Thank you for the great description, it hits the nail on the head for an issue that is tough to explain.   Did rebuilding the mailbox fix the problem? We thought a next step would be to create a new
AD profile for the user all together,  although replacing the user herself would be easier for us. She obviously caused this problem and will most likely cause us more problems that might be worse if she keeps clicking and sliding on every thing that
is shiny to see what it does..
I can only surmise that CaRa ChEn has decided to "better understand customer views on social support experience" elsewhere.  I think the only logic for the mailbox suggestion would be "grasping for straws" and it is the only thing you have not tried
so far.  (Other than replacing the user).  Pactera employees get points for being the first to reply to a question and the first to have a suggestion marked as helpful as well as the sheer quantity of replies to the forums that are made.  High
value is placed on moving posts to different forums as well so I thought I would ask quick before the thread gets shoveled somewhere else..  If she needs help with the interview project she can find plenty of my thoughts here in the community.
Thanks again, and we will reply back if replacing the user (account) does NOT solve the problem, otherwise one can assume we are happy campers again our new employee and remember just because it is blinking does not mean you should click on it.  :)
    Best regards,
    RickkEE
