Levels appear fine in STP, but over-modulated when imported back to FCP

Hello,
Trying to figure out how to work STP and FCP. Sent FCP to STP just fine. Worked the sound. Saved in STP and Exported to the original FTP file. The sound that appeared perfectly balanced in STP was over-modulated in FCP.
Explanations, help, ideas.
Thanks.

  • Media Offline when Exporting back to FCP from STP. Lesson 10 in APTS book.

Hello, I am going through the Apple Pro Training Series Book by Martin Sitter found a road block in Lesson 10. The topic is conforming at that seems to work decently (except for garbled text in the right side of the Conform tab). My issue is when trying to export back to FCP. I choose to Send Files to FCP sequence. A new sequence is created in the selected project as expected. The audio is fine, but instead of using the video from the correct sequence, it seems to be trying to use clips from the older sequence. Additionally, all the video clips show up as Media Offline. I can reconnect media, but the problem is that it is the wrong video sequence. Oddly, in STP the video looks perfect. Is there an error in the metadata? can this be fixed or prevented? Thank you

    Barreltone,
I am exporting back into Final Cut Pro via Send to Sequence. I have been exporting from the browser of FCP (sequence), and not the timeline (clips). I'm going to try that tactic, and see if that works.

  • Images look fine in Bridge, but way off when opened in Photoshop

Not sure what I've done to my system, but am now having some color-management woes. I am using Photoshop and Bridge CS5.1, and for some reason, the color-management is not consistent between Bridge and PS... although it used to be until just recently. I am on a Mac Pro tower with a properly calibrated monitor (using an Eye One Pro), and all my other color-managed applications are behaving just fine, but I have this discrepancy now within Adobe where if I view an image in Bridge, it looks correct, but when I open that same image in Photoshop, it comes up way too light and desaturated. I have verified that a correct profile is embeded in each image, but this happens regardless of the source file. I have opened up grayscale images with a dot gain or gamma profile embedded, images with no profile embedded, sRGB and Adobe 1998 profiled images, and they all open up too bright. It seems like some kind of conversion must be happening, but I can't understand what that would be. Color Settings is set to preserve embedded and ask when opening for mismatches, but that's the same as it's always been on my system. I understand without a "suite" install, I cannot access the Creative Suite Color Settings dialog to sync color across multiple Adobe apps, but things have been fine for years between my PS & Bridge, so clearly I've done something wrong. It's also worth noting that RAW images in Bridge open up looking identical in the Photoshop RAW processing dialog, so somehow this is more related to TIFF, PSD & JPEG files.
I have used the Cocktail app for general system maintenance on my Mac, and in the dialog to delete old cahce files, I do recall it had an option to clear Color Sync cache (along with a bunch of other caches), so maybe that "clean up" somehow dirsupted my color matching abilities?
I was on CS5 when I noticed this problem, so I tried uninstalling that, downloading the slightly newer CS5.1 and re-installing, but the problem persists. Maybe the uninstaller app doesn't get rid of all the hidden support files, or maybe this is something else entirely? Have trashed prefs files and relaunched, still same problem.
Note how image on right is much lighter, shadows start to look posterized, colors lose saturation. Left is Bridge and Right is Photoshop. Screenshot done on calibrated monitor.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for your reply. Screenshot of my Color Settings attached. These are the same settings I've been using for many years.
What's most interesting is your reminder to look at Soft Proofing. I normally only use that when prepping an image for print, and want to predict what different paper types will "do" to my image.,, i.e. matte paper has less d-max, etc. SO, My assumption was that Soft Proofing is normally in the OFF position unless I turn it on, and/or toggle it on-off with Cmd-Y keyboard shortcut one engaged. BUT, your assessment was spot-on, in that when I opened up the View > Proof Colors dialog, it was set to Working CMYK. Not sure why, how, or when that became the default.
In all my time years with Photoshop, I've never needed to worry about soft proofing being ON without my permission, so I'm unclear how this came about. I honestly don't even know what the default has been for all the time that this was not on my radar as being a problem, I only know that when I did opt to soft proof an image, I woulp open the Proof Colors dialog, choose the appropriate device-specific paper profile to simulate, and then turn it back off when done. It would make sense to me that the default display in PS should match the (hopefully calibrated) monitor as a starting point.
Several more screenshots below, experimenting with various Proof conditions. This one is a 16-bit Grayscale image, with my usual 1.8 Gray Gamma color space embedded. This was my first experiment, not knowing what the correct default should have been (or was for many years). My assumption was that proofing the same color space as the document (G 1.8 = G 1.8), there should be no visible difference, but in fact there is. The left image is open in PS being soft proofed to it's own G 1.8 color space, and it appears visibly brighter than the same image to the right in Bridge.
Now here's the same comparison, with Proofing set to G 2.2, which should be wrong, but visually looks like a much better match.
Next I tried a color image, with Document Profile as the proof condition. Again, the Bridge image on the right looks correct, the PS image on the left looks washed out by comparison.
Here is the same image comparison, now with Monitor RGB enabled (which pulls my current monitor profile as the device to simuulate). I'd say this is either perfect, or a much better match. This also makes sense and correlates to my suspicion that PS should be showing you things in your native monitor profile until you ask it to do otherwise with a custom soft-proofing scenario.
So now that I think I've figured it out, I leave the Monitor RGB as the device to simulate, close the image, and re-open the image just to be sure, and this is what I get...
Essentially back to the same problem. I verified that View > Proof Colors is still set to my Monitor RGB, but it's as if it's not really being applied. SO, I changed it so something else, and then changed it back, and then it looks correct... as if I somehow need to kick it and remind it to do what it's already set to do.
So, the short answer is THANK YOU for reminding me to look at the proofing setup, becasue no I at least have a kind of workaround and know where to look. The tricker part is to understand why the default doesn't really stick to the Monitor RGB (if that is even the correct place for it to stay set to), and how or why did i get off into Working CMYK in the first place, as that's not a setting I've ever used on purpose.
    Thanks again,
    Eric

  • .mov plays fine but is jumpy when imported.

I am exporting footage from a pinnacle studio file that i intend to chop up and cut in with my current project. i exported as a .mov and it plays fine on my mac but when i import it into final cut it is jumpy and terrible, all other clips play fine, any suggestions?

Not enough information. Open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector.

  • Why does a photo appear as a thumbnail, but goes black when selected to view in full?

I recently downloaded about 25 photos on my MacBook Pro with OS – X 10.9.4. Five of the photos appear as thumbnails, but when I select them to show in full screen, screen is black. When I move the thumbnail photo to downloads and call the photo up, it showed that there is no data. This is the first time I've experienced this problem, and I've downloaded hundreds of pictures with his camera. What gives?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • Aperture runs but does nothing when importing, updating vault, emptying trash

I'm new to Aperture but experienced with similar applications (I've made the move from PC to Mac). I downloaded the latest version 3.2.2 on to my new 27" iMac, 2.7Ghz, Lion, 4Gbyte RAM, terabyte HD etc (standard config). I very much like Aperture, apart from its regular crashes/doing nothing episodes. I have experienced troubles in three areas:
    - See screenshot below. Aperture appears to do nothing while taking up all system resources while importing 2k files. The log says nothing has been imported but the entire Mac slows down. Other folders with more files are OK others not. It al appears a bit random. I am importing from folders copied to the local HD, using the option 'folders/project'. My photo library is 16k images (all jpg) stored in regular folders.
    - when deleting many files in Aperture trash, the same spinning wheel as importing again with nothing happening.
    - when updating the vault, same as above 2, spinning wheel nothing else.
In all three cases Aperture seems still to be running, but I always have to finally force quit. Upon re-boot, all seems to work until the next issue is found!
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hello Gary,
That is not much to go on. Try to narrow down the problem by a few simple tests:
to find out, if your library is corrupted in some way, start aperture with a new, empty library
    File -> Switch to library -> other/new
and see, if Aperture is running without problems on a different library.
If that should be the case, try to repair your library.
If Aperture does not run from a different library, try to launch it from a different account. If that succeeds, thrash your Preference,
    If all fails, reinstall Aperture.

  • Impoting video but no audio when played back.

Never had trouble with IMovie before until now.
Trying to transfer home videos from a regular dvd.
When I play the clips, I get the video but no audio. If I open up another window (could be anything outside IMovie) I get the audio.
If I switch back to the IMovie window, no audio. I have my dvd player connected to a converter because I have an 8mm camcorder. Also, whenever I switch from edit mode to camera mode, IMovie crashes (sometimes). My converter is a Canopus ADV 110.

Try downloading the free program MPEG Streamclip. (Just Google it.) Drag your clip into the window of Streamclip, pull down the Streamclip File menu, and click on Convert to aiff, or something like that.
Likely your problem is that your clip contains an audio format or mixed material that is incompatible with iMovie. That's why it plays elsewhere but not in iMovie. Streamclip should be able to convert it to an aiff file, which works well with iMovie.

  • Sound but no picture when importing.

    Hi there,
I wonder if you can help.
A company I work with recently gave me a hard drive with various .mov files on for me to present to a client.
However, I can not get the picture of the videos to play, only the sound.
I've tried opening it in Quicktime, FCP, VLC player, Mpeg Streamclip etc, and each one gives a blank (black or white) screen, and just the sound.
Trying to move the footage into a FCP timeline results in the message 'Codec could not be opened'.
The file details are as follows:
    Blackmagic 8 bit (2vuy), 720x576, millions, 16-bit integer (Little Endian), 48,000 khz, FPS 25
Any advice you may be able to give about how to open this file would be appreciated.
    Many thanks,

As far as I know, you'll need to install the Blackmagic drivers for the Decklink card. It will also install the codecs.
    [blackmagic software downloads|http://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/software>
    Select the Decklink driver.
Do read the readme first. You might need an earlier driver version for your version of FCP, Quicktime and or OS X.
The archive of Blackmagic Drivers can be found here:

  • My ipad2 was working fine last night, but this morning is unable to connect to ANY wifi networks (though it can detect them).  All typical solutions fail.  What can i do?

My ipad2 was working fine last night, but this morning when I woke it up... it no longer was connected to my network.  While it can detect networks, it cannot connect to any (have tried at home and at work).  I have tried: resetting router, resetting ipad, forgetting network, renewing lease on network, ensuring airplane mode is off, resetting network settings, turning wifi on/off.  None of the typical solutions I can find online seem to work.  HELP!

You've gone through all of the basics. You might look at this document regarding potential issues with wi-fi environments.

If none of that works, and if a device restore doesn't work, it's time for a trip to the Genius Bar.

  • Burned video footage, but no video when playback

    Hi,
I would like to backup high-def video footage on disc.  My first attempt succeeded in creating a dvd that played back with the dvd player but could not be imported back into FCE.  (There were no .mov files on the disc, just separate audio and video folders).
Next I compressed the footage H.264 as an export file from FCE and then there was a .mov file on the disc.  But when I attempted to import it back into FCE the audio played but no video.
The third attempt I exported Quicktime files from FCE but did not check the box "Make Movie Self-contained".  I burned the disc using IDVD onto a DVD-R.  It played back fine but only when the external hard drive with the original .mov was plugged in.  After disconnecting the hard drive, the disc just played back audio.  No screen for video.  When I attempted to import the file back into FCE I got the error message - "Movie clip #39 cannot be found."  (The file wasn't named clip #39.)
    I'm using FCE 4.01 on a OS X 10.4.11.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi
I think that You may be not know that one can make two kinds of DVDs (burnings)
Video-DVD to be played on DVD-player (a very standardized way)
Data-DVD that can hold video too - but will NEVER play on a DVD-player/TV
Video-DVD has to be created via a Video encoding program as iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro or Roxio Toast™ and MUST contain at least two folders Video_TS and Audio_TS and the Audio_TS folder is empty BUT has to be here anyway. Video is encoded in a special sort of .mpeg2 code that suits DVD-player.
You can add to the Video-DVD an extra folder with a H.264 version of Your movie too if You like but then You also has to do some calculation so that the space on the DVD will be enough.
HD-DVD - No there are near to Zero (an historical type existed for a very short time and coud only be played on a few Toshiba HD-DVD players)
DVD - is as standard max. SD-Video (as on old CRT-TVs)
But here is some notes I've made reg. FCE/P to iDVD work.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving
