Lexar USB plugged into Macbook Pro stops wireless connection from working

Just purchased a Macbook Pro recently.  Noticed today that when a USB stick was plugged in (Lexar 32 GB USB 3.0) was plugged in, the wireless networking could not connect to any network services.
Finder kept trying to get to the network storage and failing or timing out.  Time Machine failed to reach the server.
Unplugging the USB stick fixed the problem.
Anyone seen this before?
Chris

Thanks again for your help Rod!
One of the first things I tried was different combinations of devices to see if it may have been the device just not powering up. The main device I use is an official Apple wired keyboard, because at home I connect my MBP to my monitor and use a separate keyboard and mouse. I have tried other devices too with the same result, they only work when the dock is connected. I have tried connecting my iPhone via USB cable, i have a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer flash drive, which only lights up if the dock is connected, and I have a 4 port USB hub with a power LED on it, which again only lights up when the dock is connected.
I looked in system profiler, and it says the USB ports are there, but doesn't recognise any devices plugged in, other than the dock. However, when the dock is plugged in, for example, it recognises the Apple keyboard in the other port.
I took two screen shots, one of system profiler without the dock plugged in (USB keyboard still plugged in but not showing up), and another of when I plugged the dock in.
Without Dock:
With Dock:
It might be worth pointing out that the HDD dock has two USB ports on it, which is what is highlighted in the second pic.
I have also tried rebooting the computer with devices already attached but with the same result again. I've tried booting it with the dock and the keyboard attached, with just the keyboard, with just the dock, but either way unless the dock is connected, nothing else will work via USB.
I just want to say thanks again Rod, it's very kind of you to spend your time trying to help me, and it is really appreciated!
I'm going to contact Apple support shortly and see if they can offer a solution, or see if I can send it in for repair, which I am reluctant to do seeing as it's my only computer
Cheers!

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,

  • Thumb Drive write protected after plugging into MacBook Pro

So I recently plugged my 64GB thumb drive into my MacBook Pro to transfer music from my old mac to my new one.  Although as soon as I plugged into the MacBook Pro, it write protected it rendering it useless as I do not wish to use it as a storage drive for 60 songs!  It is not even 1/2 full and because I plugged it into a MacBook Pro I can't use it anymore!?  It is formatted to MS-FAT, and previously I had plugged it into my 09 MacBook with no problems!  Please help me Make it a read and write again!!!  The thumb drive is only a week old!!!  There are no virus' as I have had the music on my Mac for 5 years and it has all come from the iTunes store!!!

Choose Utilities from the Finder’s Go menu, open the Disk Utility, and try running the Repair Disk command on it. If that command’s not available or doesn’t work, copy your files off and try getting a replacement.

  • IPhone 5 getting really really hot when plugged into MacBook Pro Retina?

    Hi
I have had my Macbook for about 1 month and I recently discovered that my phone is getting extremely hot while charging through USB port.
I was not sure if it was my phone as I was having issues with volume buttons, so was not sure if I had some dodgy software or something. So I went to the apple store and it was replaced as it was actually a hardware issue.
But then with my new replacement iphone 5 I am still having the same issue of the phone becoming unbearable to touch because it is so hot!
Does anyone know if there is an issue with the Macbook Pro Retina's giving out too much power and whether I should go and see someone about the issue ? But in the mean time is it still okay for my phone to be charge this way?
    Thanks
    Elle

    You said:
"So far so good on the iPhone but it does not appear to be charging when I have it plugged into my MacBook Pro."
My iPhone charges when connected to my MacBook.
"FYI...the Edge Network out here in Wichita (of all freaking places) Kansas is pretty darn fast. I was really, pleasantly surprised. It does not help my heartbreak over moving to this burg from Sausalito but it helps a little."
Even data is anxious to leave Wichita, it seems .. and wants to linger in Sausalito

  • IPod error message when plugged into Macbook Pro

My iPod will charge to my Macbook Pro for a moment or so then I get an error message stating that "This device or accessory is not supported..yadda yadda yadda" I have never had this happen in the past. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    T4,
Then the pods that you have seem not to electrically match with your Mac, as the others that you tried seemed ok, am I right in this understanding?
On the iPhone it has a very unique plug configuration that seems to set specifically for the iPhone, because it is a 4 conductor connector (one is for the microphone) that may make other pods not work properly. (yes this is an Apple thing, AAAAARRRRGGGG!!!!)
But that would then confirm that there is not anything wrong with your Mac, as those Apple pods are for the iPhone, I guess both good and bad news.
I don't use my iPhone to listen to music, nor do I use pods either, unless the artist I am working with is, then I use the same make and model so I can "hear what they hear".
I do pro audio for a living and I can understand this "crosstalk issue with the 4th connector"
But without getting too technical,  it would seem your Mac is just fine, which is a good thing.
I would think that the newer Macs will be more compatible with the Apple iPhone pods, but they all seem to have their issues with the switching system...for years now!
Hope this helps you understand this "FRUIT FLY"
My suggestion is to use "regular headphones/ear pods with your Mac and the Apple iPhone pods with the phone. )I only have ever used the iPhone pods with the iPhone when I'm driving, and with only the iPhone. I have much better sounding pods/phones that I use to "ACTUALLY' listen to music with....and it a'int MP3/4

  • USB Ports on Macbook Pro (Late 2011) no longer working...

    Hey all,
I know there are numurous posts on this but none have seemed to help me.
Today both of my USB ports have stopped working. Two months ago the one next to the thunderbolt port would go in and out and today both of them just don't work at all except to supply power. I can still charge my phone with them but thats it, nothing is recognized when I plug it in.
I've tried the PRAM reset, the SMC reset, manual reset, regular reset, updating the OSX to the latest and nothing has helped. I've read I might have to replace the logic board but I really hope I don't have to resort to that.
I've posted the reports from the System Information and an app called Etrecheck. Hopefully someone will be able to pinpoint the issue.

    Thanks for the response,
    1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
    2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
    3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
    And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x

  • Apple MacBook Pro dropping wireless connection

    Hi,
We have many MacBook pros that are having a hard time staying connected on wireless.  Often times a user can be connected for only minutes at a time.  Our wireless environment consists of 1142s and 3502 series access points.  We use WPA2 Enterprise for authentication via ACS server 5.x.
The Windows 7 machines usually never have an issue.  Can someone please provide some insight.?

  • How can I fix my MacBook Pro losing wireless connectivity with Epson Stylus NX625 printer.  It will work once and then I get an error saying the printer is not connected.

I can connect to my Epson Stylus NX625 through my wireless network and print a page or two, but then the next time I go to print it says that the printer is not connected.  Any fixes?  I have tried deleting the printer and re-adding it to my MacBook Pro OS X version 10.9.4, but sometimes it doesn't even find it, and other times it says it is connected, but when I go to print it says not connected.  Very frustrated.  I have also installed the latest drivers, etc.
    What now?

Your computer is going to run hot while playing CPU/GPU intensive games - it should heat up and the fans should be noticably loud. As to why it's 'crashing' - can you post a kernel panic log? You may have some third-party kexts that are causing the problems.

  • MacBook Pro's wireless connectivity with ZTE 531 ADSL modem using BSNL broadband

I have tried to connect macbook pro with BSNL broadband internet connection using ZTE 531 ADSL modem. The connection using both wireless mode and ethernet mode failed repeatedly. Using the same modem, I am able to connect to internet through my Sony Viao running Windows 8 and HP630 running ubuntu (both in wireless mode and ethernet mode). I have tried the 'assist me->diagnostics' option in Macbook's network diagnostics. The first 4 indicators are green, but the remaining 2 (ISP and server) remains yellow. Repeated attempts were made by restarting the modem.
Surprisingly, the Macbook works fine with a newly purchased Dlink N150 ADSL2 modem.  I have used the same WIFI settings ( as in the ZTE modem) in Dlink modem also. What could be the reason for this ?

    Hello jayan_a_r,
From what you are talking about, it seems like you have done some good troubleshooting to attempt to sort it out. Try using a different Network Location as sometimes that could be an issue when trying to access the internet. Also make sure that modem is using the recommended settings for the wireless access.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wireless Connection problem

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) w AC wireless capability, and I have not been able to connect to my wireless network at work. Other computers, including my previous MacBook Pro (mid 2008) and my iPad 3 are able to connect to the work network without problems and I have no problems connecting my new MBP to my home or other networks. I have Windows 8 on a Boot Camp partition, and when my MBP is booted under windows, it still does not connect. My MBP is running OS X 10.9.4. My work wireless network uses a Linksys Wireless G Access Point model WAP54G v.2. Rebooting the router does not help. When my MBP tries to connect to the work wireless network, the status in Network Preferences says "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.216.147 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jackso,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For troubleshooting a self-assigned IP address, I would suggest reading over and using the following article as a reference and resource.

  • Orange Livebox & MacBook Pro Slow wireless connection

    Hello,
Looks like we are a lot experiencing a slow or sporadic wireless connection.
I have done all updates, the MBP finds the livebox and connect properly but I have a very slow connection.
Lan connection is working fine and quick.
Please could somebody help me, this is my first Mac, if there is any tips or tricks to get a normal wireless speed.
    Cheers.

What kind of wireless router or access point are you using?
    Are you getting full signal?
Is the wireless router or access point around anything with a lot of metal or..
since you said that when you connect to your modem via ethernet then you could have a problem with your wireless infrastructure... if you have tested your wireless network with another computer and it works fine or if you went somewhere that has a hot spot then you can determine if there is an issue with your home network or an issue with the wireless card in the laptop...

A usb port has stopped working. How to repair.

I would do another SMC reset. If nothing changes you should take the computer in to an Apple store for a free diagnostic. You should make an appointment.

  • Spilled Into Macbook Pro 3,1 - Keyboard not working

I spilled a cup of hot chocolate into my 2.4 GHz MacBookPro3,1. I promptly unplugged it, pulled the battery and turned it off. The liquid spilled onto the left side of the computer and covered the left speaker and some of the left side of the keyboard.
I turned it upside down to let it drain, soaked up what I could from the surface and then set out to clean it.
I disassembled it to the point the keyboard was removed and the cleaned it with denatured alcohol and Q-Tips. I scrubbed what I could carefully. The damage did not seem to hit the mainboard and mostly was contained in the upper "tray".
I carefully reassembled the macbook only to find that the keyboard is not functioning properly. At first the spacebar wasn't working, but now it seems as though the option/control/function and/or Command keys are stuck on. I disassembled it again, cleaned the keyboard more thoroughly and tried again. Same result.
At the moment the keyboard is completely removed form the machine and I am using a bluetooth keyboard. It seems to be running perfectly well except the fans are both on full blast from start-up.
    Any ideas as to
    A) If the keyboard is salvageable
    B) What may be wrong
    C) What I can do
    D) How much it would cost to get replacement parts and, if needed, labor
    Thanks!

The file only containsDevice Utilities, HP Scan, HP Uninstaller and HP Utility so I can go no further with the instructions. I installed the drivers again just to make sure that I hadn't missed something. Still no connection. Help. I have two of these printers and need them both connected.
    Thanks

    Hi sbritt,
The Deskjet 2512 does not supports wireless printing.  You will need to either connect directly to your computer with the USB, or purchase a wireless print server.
More information can be found here in the "Connectivity" section: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03244829&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
I work on behalf of HP.
