LF alternatives to Arch for my laptop

Some months ago I've bought a new laptop for college use ( I'm studying computer engineering ).
And I've setup, w/o many problems, arch64 + awesomeWM and everything was working properly.
Even if I'm not really concerned about battery duration (we've plenty of wall plugs under our desks in any rooms we use ), I had installed and configured laptop-mode module and adjusted brightness not too use too much power (and not to burn my eyes aswell, since full brightness is rly too much ).
But honestly I've noticed that battery under win7 lasts almost 2 times with respect to arch and my hdd is not having that many spindowns that are pretty frequent under arch, even when I'm just typing in vim and my wifi connection is not shutting down suddendly (ok I know that I could adjust those parameters ) .
So the point is: is there any distro supporting more efficient and user-friendly/fast access power management for laptops in supported repositories, maybe other laptops features and possibly very close to arch? (I've a pretty new laptop, this may be the problem )
I'm running Ubuntu on my desktop but I'd like to run something more 'interesting' on my laptop without load of useless stuff on it and that allows me to make choices about WM and other programs.
Thanks in advance

You might be afflicted by the power regression bug that lurks somewhere in the Linux kernel. I don't follow kernel development that closely, but according to Phoronix this is still an issue even with the latest kernel 3.1.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … ress&num=1
Now, as for distros, I don't think that distro devs can conjure up anything that could reduce power consumption significantly in the userland. Secondly, I'm afraid that battery life time is such an important marketing feature when it comes to laptops that companies might want to protect/hide whatever software schemes they have, making it difficult for Linux to come par.
As a chemistry student I'm putting all my hopes on the development of more powerful batteries. :-P
EDIT: I'd like to also point out that while Archers are the first to get all the cool new kernel features, they are also going to be the first to feel the pain of kernel bugs. Does installing Debian (that I don't fancy that much myself) make a difference for you in terms of battery life?

  • Setup Problem HP6830 using Hotspot for Printer & Laptop

I have a TMobile Hotspot that gives me internet access for my laptop.I have a HP Officejet Pro that I just got and I'm trying to set it up on the Hotspot network.I've installed (via disk) the HP Software on my Toshiba Coimputer.I've gone through the setup process on the printer and it shows I'm connected to the Hotspot Network. When I try to go through the setup process on the computer it says it can't find that printer.I've checked - over and over again - the IP, and printed everything out (Config Page & Network TestResults) on the Printer, and it indicates everything is OK. My question is - Why can't my computer find the computer (they're both on the same Hotspot Network)?I don't have a USB Cable right now, and I'm trying to set it up wirelessly.  Any suggestion about what I might have missed?  Any help would be appreciated

Hey ,  Welcome to the HP Support Forum.  I understand you're encountering some setup issues when using your HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer with a mobile hot spot.  I would like to assist you with this.   In my experience, mobile hotspots are hit and miss when used to support printers' wireless connections, even when the setup's are completed with diligence and care on the part of the user.  This caveat aside, as there are no official documents from HP on how to troubleshoot this particular issue, I recommend  toggling airplane mode on your T-Mobile device before restoring the hotspot connection.  Try the printer to laptop connection via the software as before, once you've confirmed the laptop's connected to the hotspot.  If this approach falls short, you could try the alternative and HP supported wireless direct setup method.  Here's how: From your printer's front panel touch the Wireless Direct icon ()Turn Wireless Direct OnFrom here you can choose to have it enabled with Security On or Off.  If you turn Security On, make a note of the passcode (it'll come in handy later). To learn how to complete the setup on your computer and any other mobile devices, click here for more instructions. Please let me know the result of your troubleshooting by responding to this post.  If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below and clicking to accept this solution. Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!

  • I want to connnect my early 2012 MBP to my LG HDMI. I have the HDMI cable. What connector do I need for the laptop?

Please give me the name of the connector for the laptop. Is it a "display port"?

Note that you'll find two alternatives: one that has a TB plug at one end and a little box with a female HDMI jack at the other or a cable that has male TB and HDMI plugs at both ends. First one gives you the flexibility of using a standard HDMI cable of whatever length you need, at an extra cost. Second simplifies things and eliminates one connection (and possible point of failure), but may limit how far away you can place the computer from the display.

  • No Arch for a while =[

Well now our new student house has no Internet and I ended up with a blanked hard-disk after trying to install a new student based distro to try out in the hopes I can convert fellow Biology lab mates to Linux, and the computer crashed during partitioning and moving data on my hard drive and ended up rendering it useless. Now I'm back on Ubuntu as it was the latest disk I got with a linux mag, and on a mobile broadband dongle. Normally I install Arch with an ethernet cable plugged in because I need the broadcom driver that's on the AUR and Nvidea drivers and such. I had a look at Archiso, which I may very well be using in the future when I have some spare time to generate a back up iso with my drivers and such on it. But it struck me that the instructions for this were for doing on an Arch system. So I'm wondering if there's any way I could do this  sort of thing in Ubuntu? Otherwise it's no Arch for the month until the house FINALLY gets the line active again (damn BT!) and the Internet installed.
    Cheers,
    Ben.

You should able to add your wireless driver stuff in the iso using archiso: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … kages.list
Alternatively, you can include the core repo in your live cd and and use it to install the base system. Once you have the base system installed you could download the wireless drivers and install them manually with pacman -U /path/to/pkg.tar.xz

  • Finally a graphics card for Apple Laptop's Nvidia 7950 mobile released.

    7950 = apparently dual ( 7800 gtx 256bit 256mb+ / g70/1 / 35gb/s / 800m )
Now Apple has no more excuses to delay building the first Apple Intel Laptop " NOT Apple ATI X1600 PDA ".
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/10/12/nvidiageforce_go7950/

Sorry to have fried your nerf's but I do love Apple and would gladly purchase another Apple if they give me something to buy and not provide weaker machines then 2 year old Dell Laptops.
I would have bought the Mac pro desktop until I found out it only has 2 x dual cores "4 cpu's" . LOL who would pay for that LOL
I wanted / expected and informed all my friends about it having 2x quad core xeon's ie: 8 cpu's until they called back and laughed at me
    Well my 2 year old Dell E1705 Zippo has a 7800 gtx 256bit 256mb ram running at 800m thingy's / 35gb/s at normal settings.
The 7800 gtx comes from a 9300 celeron m Dell laptop model that was prior to the 9400 celeron m that was prior to the e1705 core duo.
I payed $1500 way back when I purchased it and added 2gb 667 ddr2 + 7200rpm 100gb hd 2.5". Not $2500 for a $900 dell clone. "Ebay" I do not pay for half a broken cup of coffee, I want the real deal not some ripp-off.
Now if Apple expects me to buy again from them they will have to provide a Apple laptop that comply's with my orriginal reason for switching to Apple = Power / Performance / Design / Craftsmanship and extremely high prices in relation to the other junk out there for sale "NON Apple Stuff / alternatives"
So when they think of returning to APPLE and stay away from the Dell clones that they are trying to produce now $900.00 stuff "Mac Book Pro actual value , then I will gladly pay $2500 - $3000 for a laptop that will in any case be plugged in to AC 96% of the time ie: battery = backup power.
Surely they will then have to provide power / performance / design / craftsmanship and a non mobile phone graphics card ie: 7950 or at least the 8800 g80 that will be released in november 2006
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/10/02/nvidiag80_to_shipnovember/
SO why get so upset it is a good product for children and teachers "Mac Book Pro" but for the idiots like me and NASA and any other normal person over the age of 10 we need power and don't mind paying for it.
Or we would have bought the MacBook to play with.
Surely the 110v/220v light bulb that light the room you are in will not be satisfied with 2 AA 2x1.5v battery's to power it as it will not be able to do it's job ??????

I read about truecrypt being abandoned and possible backdoors in the current version. I like to have an encrypted container for private files on my laptop. I do not want to have an entire encrypted partition there. What is a recommended alternative to truecrypt for containers that is supported and secure?

  • Can anyone please tell some alternative hard drive for S230u Twist?

    Dear Team
I am struggling to get the hard drive 04W4088 which is for the thinkpad twist S230u here in India.  Can any one please help me to  find an alternative hard drive for the same ?  Can I go for any SSD drive?   Currently the laptop is with the service desk, but they said no stock available for the twist hard drive.   So, if I can give a new suitable hard drive they can fix it and give it to me back.   Also, theey said it is not posible to fit the SSD for the twist S230U.  I am really suffering because of the poor customer service and my laptop is with them for past one month.  can anyone help me in getting a new suitable hard drive for the Think pad twist S230u?
    Thanks

Have you tried reinstalling the original drive? Same symptoms with it?

  • Installing arch on old laptop without internet

i've been playing around with linux for the past month, mostly using mandriva and for a very short time slack and ubuntu. mandriva works well and was definitely a smooth change for a long time windows user. due to a dying harddisk i even learend some of the basics pretty damn fast . now my machine is back up and running with w2k, mandriva and (soon) arch.
i have an old laptop (hp omnibook with a 600 mHz celeron, 10 gb hdd, 128 mb ram, s3 graphics card and no internet connection). it's being used as an OFFLINE INFOSYSTEM (which is a simple but quite extensive webpage) for my clients, running mandrake 10.1 for the past year without problems. the only drawback is the long boot time and the bad font rendering. to speed things up i'd like to try arch.
in short: i need a fast booting system with basically only a webbrowser running my webpage offline. NOTHING ELSE! would you recommend arch for that? remember, i can't update any packages online, because there's no possibility to connect that laptop to the internet.
what do you suggest? what packages do i have to install from the cd to get a small, fast system? obviously the base system and xorg. but then what, and is everything to be found on that cd?

Larch LiveCD construction kit mat give you a way to do what you want.
To use it normally it requires downloading via the internet so you probably would have to use another machine to create the LiveCD with larch.  The parameters loaded would have to fit your laptop and it requires kernel26beyond to be functional.
The details are in USER CONTRIBUTIONS forum if you are inclined to study it.
The download of Larch 0.9.9 or later includes verbose readme files.  It would seem you could build it on another machine and use it on the laptop assuming your laptop is i686 compliant.
    Best to you...

  • Help with enabling TPM in Task Sequence for Dell Laptops

    Hi there,
I would appreciate some advice on creating a task sequence for Win8.1 with TPM enabling for Dell laptops; I have BitLocker set up manually with a Group policy, but want to have TPM enabled in the task sequence. I have read older posts on sites such as windows
noob, but can't see how to reference the CCTK and get TPM going for win8.1 in a SCCM2012 environment.
Obviously I haven't created this before so any help would be appreciated; I have noticed when I try to import my CCTK configurations into SCCM as it isn't a zip file I cannot do it.

  • I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?
    Check your power status
From the  menu: Hold OPTION and click System Information... èHardware è Power
Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.

  • How do I use my 8300 as a modem for my laptop

    Hi all,
I'm new to this forum. This is my first post...
I'm trying to set up my 8300 smartphone to be used as a tethered modem for my laptop to be able to get the full internet content anywhere with in cell coverage.
    Question 1:
I got instructions from the 'BlackBerry HELP' icon on the phone (my question was: how do i use my device as a modem) which seemed very complete. The modem is dial-up and when I try to connect I get Error 718 (basically a timeout error).
    Can anyone help?
    Question 2:
Since this uses dial-up, would I be using my cell phone minutes?
    Thank you, Lar

    hello,
first thing is to look on the forum if people have already solved your issue. In this case, the tethering subject is quite frequent. You will certainly find your answer among these discussions :

  • How do I use my airport express as my default audio for a laptop?

I can stream music from iTunes to our airport exoress no problem, but I'd like to be able to use the speakers connected to our Airport Express as the default audio output for my MacBook Pro - i.e for all sounds, aps, etc.  This would allow me to wirelessly stream music or any other audio (not just iTunes) and then have it played through the speakers.  I've googled and looked here, but cannot seem to find a clear cut answer that isn't two plus years old in all the clutter.
    Thank you in advance.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

    ps
When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.
