LG 42" Plasma: 720p much better with onscreen menu

I thought I would share this.
I've always advocated the upscaling option to 1080i using BT Vision.
However I smpled the 720p option the other day as some of the colours were over saturated.
As I have callibrated the set I'd like to think I know what looks best on it, it was then I tried the tv guide.
There was a significant improvement with the onscreen graphics, no bleeding around the edges of the text and no artificial edge enhancement.
I'ts odd as miy HD ready set has 1366 x 768 pixels so the tv has to effectively create the missing lines from the signal from the vbox, so 1080i should actually look better as it laces 2 swperate fields of 540 lines faster than your eyed can tell (well that's the theory).
On my blu ray player 1080i is fab.
I've not tried a downloaded hd film yet, and they are 1080i encoded too were told.
To conclude, the vbox is upscaling whatever hd choice output you go for, so it's not that surprising to get contrasting results. (cos for the most part were not getting a true hd signal from it you see but an upscaled one-).

No worries mate...seems you went through the same saga that I'm going through. Thanks for the tip. From what I can see, the general senses is to use DisplayConfix. I downloaded it but may have to get the full licensed copy. Will give it a try shortly. If you do easily find the settings feel free to include.

OS7.0.3 is much better

Finally the ipod app doesn't crash on me around 4-8 times a day. It appears like the unstability of the first OS7 update has finally gone down. My only complaint at this point is when you go to rate a track you are listening to. When I touch the album art, the song information is replaced with the rating. It appears like the ROI for selecting a rating is extremely small. I flip back and forth from song info to rating many time before I finally get to rate the song. This feature was working much better with the first two releases but this current one seems to have changed the ROI for the rating.
Yes I'll submit a feedback as well. I just wanted to post that the current OS release is a big improvement at least for me.

You may also want to look at new prefs in v9 for EXS24:
Open EXS24
Click-hold on options top right on the window and select *Virtual Memory*
You can configure how best to allocate things here. This has helped me with some projects.
I actually find that projects that used to crash Logic 8 work better in Logic 9.x

Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

I miss Palm Desktop for Mac. The integration of contacts, to-dos, notes, appointments, etc. was great. I stopped using it about a year ago when I finally sold my Palm Tungsten T and purchased and iPhone 4. iCal etc. work fine for me, but they're not as good as Palm Desktop was.
I also miss Graffiti 1 handwriting recognition. I could write with it as fast and flawlessly as I can write longhand on paper, and nearly as fast as I can type. It was the best for meetings and interviews, since I could write without having to look at the screen. iOS has nothing that comes close; I've gotten used to the onscreen keyboard but it's slower, I make far more mistakes, and I have to keep my eye on the screen while typing.
As others have pointed out, Palm Desktop was written for PPC processors. Lion does not include and cannot run Rosetta, which is the emulation environment which allowed Intel processors to run PPC code. So Palm Desktop will not run on a Mac running Lion.
I was syncing to my Palm Tungsten T under Snow Leopard (and using Palm Desktop) with no troubles at all. There are third-party sync options available, but they're all kludgy and unreliable compared to Palm's own syncing. Again, though, the Palm software for syncing was written for PPC processors and so won't run on any Mac booting into Lion.

Please help! I should be getting much better performance! What am I doing wrong?

I've recently started using After Effects CC and I am getting extremely poor performance, especially given my machine specs (or so I believe).
Everything is very slow, including the actual software interface. Even with the Live Update switched off:
- Moving components on the actual composition view is practically impossible: click, drag, wait about 15seconds, release click and it has moved somewhat in the general direction required, but not even to the place the mouse stopped.
- Scrubbing doesn't work at all, even after the render bar on the timeview is already fully green.
- Standard preview (spacebar) can never play at realtime. The only way to play footage at realtime is to use RAM preview (numpad 0), but even then it takes ages to render small parts (10seconds of footage, takes anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes).
It's enfuriating! I am so convinced that my machine should perform SO much better than this!
I have tried everything that I can think of and everything that I have found on this forum and others through out the internet. Spent the last week googling this issue and have not made much improvement!
I have even checked the raytracker_supported_cards.txt file actually included the GeForce GTX 590. It does.
Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated, cos I am stumped. Many thanks!

Have played with it in Fast Draft too, but rendering was quicked on Adaptive Resolution.
This is because for A.R. it uses multiprocessing, but for Fast Draft M.P. is disable (incompatible mode, it says).

I have also gone and updated every driver, especially the motherboard chipset and the Sata Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.
Unfortunately, this hasn't made any difference.

Why is the MPE so much better when using Vista?

I get more realtime playback using Windows Vista than When using Windows 7 with HDV. I can get better GPU and CPU playback both when using Vista for HDV. Why is that? Im using a GT 240 and it kicks *** with Vista. I use a second LCD TV monitor as an NTSC monitor for the realtime previews. I do get some realtime with Windows 7 but only about half as much as with Vista. Something is better about Vista for HDV clips but Idon't know what. I have done several fresh installs and updates. What gives? Any thoughts.

I have done fresh OS installs and Windows updates. The GT 240 was added the same way. For HDV the Vista OS is better. For AVCHD they are about the same. I think it is a bug. It works better using Windows 7 if I don't output to the LCD TV monitor. Do any of you use HDV and preview on a NTSC monitor?

For the 24 inchers...how much better is the ATI over the NVIDIA?

Well, I just purchased the new 24in IMac at 3.06 ghz with its basic options....4gb ram, TB hard drive and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 video card. My friend, coincedentally bought the same one just a few days later, however its refurbished, has the (only) other video card option, I believe the ATI Radeon HD 4850. My friend has relentlessly teased me saying their IMac is "better" than mine. Now this doesn't all bother that much, however, according to the apple website, at only $50 more for the "better" ATI video card....how much better is it actually? Will the performance be that noticable in applications such as After Effects and Motion? If anybody can clear up the $50 difference and as to why that is, I'd appreciate it.

On the plus side (for your choice), Apple seems to be working more closely with NVIDIA these days. That may (or may not) be beneficial when Snow Leopard is released.

It seems as if Pages 09 is a much better proposition than the last current pages5. How can I get hold of pages09. When I tried before I wasn't able to download it.

I have a new iMac. I am in the process of having to put together an 8 page newsletter every month with photos and texts and some tables. I am having trouble with the current Pages changing things as I work through the document. Is there a way I can get the older Pages 09 version which I read is so much better. I tried once before but my I Mac would not accept the download.

If you never had iWork '09, buy it extremely cheaply from Amazon, just make sure to update it to v4.3.

Hi! I'm a High School Student, and I really need help in choosing the right MacBook. So which is which?

Unfortunately, you mentioned "GAMES!!!" - no Mac notebook is a good gaming machine (sad but true). For everything else, however, I would recommend a MacBook Pro (Retina or non-Retina - whichever you prefer, although my preference is for the non-Retina: it lacks the portability of the Retina but is user upgradeable whereas the Retina 13" machine is limited to 8GB of RAM, soldered onto the logic board, and a 'fixed' storage space).
I haven't looked at the specs but I'm assuming that the Retina model would be only slightly heavier than the Air. But it would out-perform the Air should you desire to try games with it.
Good luck - we get these "what shall I buy" questions all the time but, in the end, it's your decision.

Just how much better is nattres than compressor in converting pal - NTSC?

I am on the verge of buying the Nattres plugin but before i do i would like to know how much better it is than compressor. I did some test with compressor and the results are unacceptable. I have to send some stock footage to America from here in South Africa. The footage im trying to convert is half Betacam half DVCPROHD.

I don't think Natress is over $75.
Natress is the only plug-in or software that has given us consistent results.
It also does PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL.
Rendering can take a while depending on the length of your sequence.
Edit in PAL and when you are done duplicate your sequence and make an NTSC version. You can then avoid having to convert footage that doesn't end up in your final sequence.

After updating to iOS 6.0 everything is a mess. i cant get in my CO app game, imessages undelivered, worst of all i cant connect to Apps store. If u were able to solve this pls let me know. or if possible to return to old OS 5.1 that is much better. HELP!

I had the same experience with a new iPhone 5 that I bought last week. Did not have a chance to measure battery life before the 6.0.2 upgrade installed but I set up my phone exactly like my 4S and immediately started running out of power after short periods. Went to Xmas get together with fully charged 5 and 4S. Heading home the iPhone 5 shut down for low battery and the 4S had 65% power. Both phones had two half phone calls on then and no data usage.
That night I fully charged the iPhone 5 and, without lighting it up, put it on my night table. Next morning I picked it up and looked at battery indicator and I had 42% charge with NO activity!
Tried it again next night and wound up with 37% charge. (Slept longer).
Today I called the carrier and reactivated the 4S. Took the 5 to Apple Store and they kindly gave me choice of new replacement phone or refund. I took the refund. Uniquely, the Apple Store said it was Verizon CDMA phones that were coming back.
The are other strings on this with temporary solutions, but from my experience with 7 firmware changes on an HTC 4G phone the problem will continue because the solution will be hardware caused. We are in the days where RTM means Rush to Market - not Release To Manufacturing.
I fear the only solution is to either wait for the next model (I did not notice a really major change in performance over the 4S in LTE heavy Seattle area) - or switch to another manufacturer.
It might be useful for these forums to indicate if you have a GSM or CDMA phone to see which have more problems.
