LG R510 - Suspend-to-RAM problem
Hi, I'm having trouble using the suspend-to-ram feature on my LG R510 laptop. I tried suspending the machine using the suspend feature integrated in KDE-4.2 as well as using the command-line tools s2ram and pm-suspend. The machine behaves exactly the same in all cases:
The system (apparently) suspends without errors. It also correctly restores to it's former state upon wakeup. Even the X-Server starts and seems to work fine.
However, the hard-drive can no longer be accessed after wakeup, leaving you with a "dead" system.
If you try running a command from a shell it will trigger either "command not found" or "input/output error" messages. For that reason I'm unable to gather any diagnostic information from the continued system. Since the hard-drive cannot be accessed, no logs get written after wakeup either.
The hard-drive does spin up when the system wakes up (I can clearly hear it). There is probably some problem with the hard-drive controller. However, I wasn't able to find any specific information about Intel ICH9 chipsets and suspend-to-RAM yet.

It seems this is a BIOS bug of the LG R510. There is a workaround: You have to set your hard drive to IDE mode.
To do this, open the BIOS setup utility by pressing F2 during startup. Look for the "HDC configure as" option and switch it from AHCI to IDE.
Note that this might reduce disk performance. So far, I haven't noticed any difference after switching to IDE. Suspend-to-RAM works like a charm now.
By the way, a similar problem occurs on HP notebooks where it can be fixed through a BIOS update. Unfortunately there is no update available for the LG R510 yet.

[Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop
Hello,
I have an HP dv7-6000 notebook that I can't get suspend to RAM working on. When I tell Linux to suspend, the screen turns off, I hear the hard disk turn off, but all the lights stay on (power, wireless, and touchpad). After a couple minutes the BIOS kicks in and runs the fans at maximum speed. The only way to get out of this situation is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.
It's almost as if the suspend was successful, but "incomplete," because the system for whatever reason is stuck powered on.
I have updated the BIOS and there is no difference. I have also tried different acpi_os_name values based on my DSDT table ("Windows 2001," "Windows 2009," etc.).
Both pm-utils log files (pm-powersave.log and pm-suspend.log) are blank. I have also tried uswsusp, and the same thing happens. I have not tried hibernate yet because I don't have a swap partition.

[Solved] Suspend to ram doesn't work correctly on Acer Aspire 5100
Hi people of the archlinux forum.
Finally I decided to change from ubuntu to archlinux because I wanted to learn more about the world of linux.:D
I have already almost completely set up my laptop, but I have a problem when suspending to ram. The problem comes out when i wake up the laptop, and the screen starts to flicker and will not go away until i restart the laptop.

xorg.conf is not used. Turning KMS off doesn`t help.
I have tried to use uswsusp, but it doesn`t help. s2ram -n output correctly identify my laptop, which means it is in "whitelist" and correct settings for this hardware is known. s2ram suspend works, but screen blinking after waking up remains the same.

Hi. I would like to ask for your advice. I have problem with suspend to ram. In order to have nvidia drivers i had to install newest kernel, 3.12.xx. I found that suspend to ram doesen't work. I put my computer in sleep mode by typing
sudo systemctl suspend
, everything works, computer goes in sleep mode but after resume from it, after wake up i have only black screen with unblinking cursor on the left upper corner of screen. I can't kill x, can't do anything in tty, only hard reset.
I removed nvidia drivers in order to check older kernel, and found that with nouveau drivers kernel 3.9 works, i can suspend and resume. I did another thing. I installed clean Arch, updated it with pacman -Syu, and installed nvidia drivers - the same problem with resuming from suspend. So on fresh and updated system i removed nvidia again, installed old kernel with nouveau - suspend works with resume.
Could somebody help me? Maybe you can point me to a solution? I would like to have nvidia drivers installed and working suspend with resume from suspend to ram.

I don't see anything wrong here. I asked on polish site about kernel 3.12, and with Ubuntu they said it works. Why on Arch only kernel 3.9 works with resuming from suspend to ram and olny when there are no nvidia drivers (because they need new kernel, i could even use old but i'm not so exprienced to compile kernel myself, won't do that, and with downgrade script from AUR i didn't found nvidia driver for older kernels. There are old kernel, even 3.0.xx but only nvidia drivers from 325 that they need 3.12 kernel).
My spec is AMD X4 955, NVIDIA GTX260, 4GB ram. Arch is x32, kernel 3.12.5.1 (other don't work with resume too, only 3.9 with nouveau).

With newer kernel it just doesen't so if this would be a nvidia MSI problem than i would have it also on kernel 3.9.8.1 where i installed newest drivers ( i installed binary because i don't know which package from aur would work with this kernel, and on aur thare are only drivers from 325, no older).
Edit - just as i said. Doesen't work. It is not related to nvidia because it happens on nouveau. It is kernel fault.

I tried to get Suspend to Ram, but whatever way I use. Nothing worked.
First try was with
echo -n "mem" > /sys/power/state
I then got only a blinking cursor on a black screen for 20 seconds and then I see my console back with the error message
write error: Resource temporarily unavailable
Next thing the hibernate-scripts.
I changed hibernate.conf to
#TryMethod suspend2.conf
#TryMethod disk.conf
TryMethod ram.conf
After a run I have the same behaviour like in the first method.

Ok for the last attempt I installed powersave, run the powersaved daemon and typed "powersave -u" into my console.
My machine switched to text and I could read

And the hibernate-script crashed at the vbetool-line, leaving me with a black screen.
But I don't think thats the main problem, because my machine even don't goes to the S3-sleep.dystoptic wrote:Shows mem and disk.
Do you use the proprietary ati driver or the xorg implementation?
Edit: Seems to be the free one, right? With my ati card i had a lot of struggle in connection with suspend to ram(with the free and the proprietary driver), i don't remember how i solved it, but finally it worked one time...

Suspend to RAM works but awakes immediately (pm-suspend)

After after years of being unable to make suspend to RAM works on my lenovo Y530, I have finally found people who can do it. The trick is simply to add a new rule in /etc/pm/sleep.d/. I will edit the arch wiki page concerning the Y530 if I get it to work, but right now my problem is that the laptop immediately awakes after what seems to be a fully working suspend to RAM. As you can see, everything works fine, except the fact that the computer awakes 7 seconds after going to sleep... Of course I'm not touching it when it goes to sleep. I've also tried to disconnect everything I could (USB device and wifi).
Is there anyone who have already seen this kind of thing?Just out of curiosity, are you wired in to a network? I've heard that data transfer over ethernet will trigger the wake-on-lan settings in the BIOS, which would wake it from sleep.

K9A2 CF Suspend to RAM not working?
Suspend to RAM worked for a little while but the last three restarts have failed. I'm using beta BIOS 1.21 and 32-bit WinXP. BIOS 1.1 never worked. Is anyone else having problems? I've set the BIOS to use S3 instead of the default S1 and tried enabling force GPU to POST on restart (or whatever it's called).

My old board had a nForce 570 Ultra chipset.
I want 64-bit Vista for the 64-bit part. Only being able to use 3.25GB of my 4GB RAM annoys me. I could put Fedora 8 on it but then I couldn't play games very well (yes, I know about Cedega). Could run other stuff in a 32-bit WinXP VMWare Player instance though, and upgrade to 8GB RAM, hmm. -
[Solved] Suspend to RAM not working.
I just installed Arch on an old box with an MSI K8T Neo motherboard and I can't get suspend to RAM working. On the BIOS I have two ACPI modes: S1/POS and S3/STR. If I set it to S1 it does suspend but the hardware is not actually shut off (the fans, LEDs, and monitor backlight says on). With the S3 setting it does a complete shutdown so when I turn it back on it fresh boots instead of resuming. Suspend to both effectively hibernates when the BIOS setting is S3, with S1 it behaves just as suspend to disk. I've tried using systemd, pm-utils, and writing to /sys/power/state directly. All the same.
Just until last night I had Windows XP x64 installed and suspend was working just fine. I mostly use it as a file and printer server but I don't want it running all the time so I use Wake-on-Lan so it wakes up on demand and I'll be using a cron script (or whatever is called on systemd) to put it back to sleep after a while.
Any suggestions?

Keyboard not working after suspend to ram
Hi,
I have this problem since I have my notebook. Is a sony vaio cs.
After suspend to ram the keyboard does't work.
I've read in other forums that is a general gnu/linux problem, not only arch, and I think is related with the i8042 driver and generally hp pavillions have it.

Please ask me for more info if needed.I had this issue for almost a year with my Sony CS190. After a clean install, it still exists. So,
After suspending the keyboard doesn't work, and unbinding/binding i8042 only helps touchpad, not keyboard.
EDIT: PS: Keyboard & Touchpad work fine after hibernate.

Suspend to ram/disk stopped working overnight
My suspend to ram/disk used to work fine, but overnight, it stopped. It is not an update issue since, I was able to suspend after the last update. I decided to update today hoping that it is going to solve the problem, but the problem persist.
Here is what happens:
$ sudo pm-suspend
or
$ sudo pm-hibernate
The computer suspends faster than usual, as if it does not take the time to complete the suspend procedure. When I turn the computer on, it starts to boot instead of resuming from suspend. In the case of hibernate, this is clearly obvious. Normally it is suppose to take 10-30 s. to save the memory data to the swap, but this time the computer shuts fast (1-2s.), and I doubt that all the data is saved to swap.

This seems to be too few information to pin point the exact cause of the problem.
What should I do to troubleshoot this problem ?My linux installation is actually on a harddrive using SATA on a desktop. I decided to remove this harddrive and put it into an external usb enclosure. I booted this linux installation on my laptop. When doing suspend, it works as it should, which let me think this is probably not a software issue.
If it is a hardware malfunction, which hardware malfunction can be responsible of an incomplete suspend procedure as described earlier? -

In fact, when i was researching of this problem i wanted to check if my graphic card and memory are failing so a did few changes (removed memory stick and so one) but in doing this i removed almost all of my hard disk drives because i didn't want to hurt them with many reboots or resets.
What did i find? It is strange, kernel version is not important because i checked most of them.
I removed 2x2TB Seagate F14 series along with 4x3TB WD Green. Then i checked s2ram, it went to suspend, and resumes correctly. Everything works. I put it to sleep with s2ram -f -a 1. Works
I attached my 4x3TB WD Green drives. I put computer to sleep with s2ram...it causes hard lock, black screen, i could do only poweroff by powerbutton. s2ram -f -a 1 causes freez. Sometimes, but not constantly, s2ram -f -a 3 -p is being able to suspend...(mostly it does a freez, hard lock computer) but sometimes it is able to put it to a sleep, but resume just freezes everyting - no blinking cursor, no blinking num lock led and so on.
I know that you would suggest me to check logs - this is the main problem. Logs for pm-suspend works when i suspend or resume without WD drives attached. When i have them connected, i'm not able to check pm-logs because computer hangs, freezes and logs are not being stored/writed to pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.
Could somebody help? Point me to a solution? I can't check logs because there are not any when freezing occurs. I checked openSuse thread and many others and for other systems there were some kernel fixex, patches.
They wrote that WD blacks are at fault because they don't have APM. Well, in fact my WD Green have APM with very aggresive factory settings: they park heads over 8 seconds not being used. I disabled it in firmware but disabling it is not the point and not the problem. People have the same problem even with APM and parking heads on other WD drives, i found it that some have it with WD Red's drives and even with very old 320GB WD Blue series - what is more funny, i have 640GB AAKS blue from WD and with this drive i can suspend or resume - APM on this drive is also unavilable, like in Green series because i changed it with wdidle with prebootable cd. I can't supend or resume with 3TB WD Greens.
BTW - suspend to disk, with pm-utils and uswsusp works ok, in 100% every time. (i had to add "shutdown method = shutdown" to /etc/suspend.conf from uswsusp package).
On Windows machine it works. Can suspend, can resume, can hibernate.

I was trying to find why suspend to ram won't work at all...and while i was searching i found one topic that was leading to upower dbus. Similar problem with upower i found, by coincidence, on Manjaro forum.

As soon as i enabled and started acpid.service...my supend to ram, from kde, works like a charm, without graphic problem, or freezing.
There is few question: why on my desktop suspend doesen't work out of the box, when even archwiki says it should? Why on my netbook machine (Acer AOD270) that has the same package installed it works out of the box? Why on my desktop machine acpid.service was not enabled, was not started and was not running while on the notebook it does?
Anyway...i fixed it by a big coincidence because on Fedora forum somebody has problem with suspend to ram with nvidia GTX750 and this card was new like my card (GTX660). He posted the same problem with upower that i posted in quotes and because of this i found another thing on Manjaro forum and that was it!
BTW - this problem, i now think, is not related to my WD drives because it works with them. I think that there was another one ugly thing that broke my suspend to ram ability - bios of my motherboard (so called uefi bios with support for old one) has no option for S1-S5 stated (like the previous motherboards had) and only have ASPM...and ASPM is in my opinion broken but i will try to veryfi it one again later.

HP dv3510nr suspend-to-ram / resume SATA issues
I'm trying to get suspend to ram working on my HP dv3510nr.. The problem is that when it resumes, the SATA drive seems to error out and cause the file system to fail. I've tried s2ram -f with a few of it's options, and pm-suspend. Neither resume properly (Actually, from the dmesg output it looks like it doesn't suspend properly either). Suspend takes about 30-40 seconds, but resume takes about 3-5. I have installed a Patriot 32GB SSD drive on this machine. I'm wondering if that can cause something like this. I am also using dm-crypt w/ aes-xts encryption for /dev/sda2. This maps to /dev/mapper/root, which is an ext4 partition. /dev/sda1 is an encrypted swap partition that gets setup on each boot by /etc/crypttab.cd

High temperature after suspend to RAM with linux-3.9.2-1.
After the update to linux-3.9.2-1 my laptop works on higher temperature after resuming from suspend to RAM. Works fine with linux 3.8.7-1.
Normal working temperature is 47~49 degrees Celsius and after resuming it is 59~61. It's not just a false temperature reading. I can actually feel the laptop warmer, and the CPU fun spins up.
I can't see any CPU high load. I tend to believe that the temperature rise has to do with the Intel GPU driver (i915). My CPU has an integrated GPU.

Ways to debug it? Apart from kernel GIT bisect.I got the impression myself, that all the i915 downclock tweaks have been getting counterproductive over time as the driver got better.
Be sure to give the new pstate another go. I had problems too with the upgrade to 3.9.x and the powersave governor. Enabling "performance" in cpupower only and letting intel_pstate manage the idling on its own had an awesome effect. I only have rc6=1 and "sna" accel along with it on a similar cpu. Resuming with fan off. -
Suspend to ram Dell insipron 6000 (probably easy)

I'm having some basic problems with the whole suspend to ram operation. As a new user to configuring this by hand, I'm a bit lost at where I should start. So this is what I have so far.
I have installed Klaptop, and it has the suspend option, but after suspending, it doesn't resume. (It powers back on to a black screen only where I can't do anything)
I have installed pm-utils. pm-suspend suspends the computer and then on resume just goes to the same black screen like klaptop does.
My daemons are
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng cpufreq !network netfs crond kdm dbus hal dhcdbd networkmanager autofs keytouchd)
and my modules are

e^1I've got suspend and hibernate to work with pm-utils (and kpowersave-devel) on a Dell Inspiron 6400 about 80% of the way, and I'm appending my install notes on this. Perhaps they'll help you. This new power management scheme looks like a convoluted mess to me, and I'm still flailing with it.

1. Install acpid, pm-utils and cpufrequtils, i.e. # pacman -S acpid pm-utils cpufrequtils
Add 'acpid' to the list of DAEMONS in /etc/rc.conf. If you already have hal specified in your DAEMONS, there is no need to add acpid. HAL will automatically detect and load the acpid daemon.
Both pm-suspend (suspend2ram, low power state) and pm-hibernate (suspend2disk, system powered down completely) are usually called from HAL, e.g. initiated by the desktop applet kpowersave.
They can be run in several ways:
a. Via buttons or shortcuts (e.g. Fn-ESC for Standby, Fn-F1 for Hibernate)
b. From KPowersave in task bar
c. Or, without using HAL and other frameworks, call pm-suspend or pm-hibernate from the command line as root:
# pm-suspend
# pm-hibernate
2. Configure pm-hibernate (suspend2disk):
When the machine is placed into hibernation, it will move all data from RAM to the swap partition (swap size must be >= RAM). Edit the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst by adding 'resume=path_to_swap_partition', e.g.
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda2 resume=/dev/sda5 ro vga=791
3. Configure cpufrequtils:
a. Add the driver "acpi-cpufreq" to the MODULES list in /etc/rc.conf.
b. Load a governor(s) (a pre-configured power scheme, loaded as a kernel module) by adding 'cpufreq_ondemand' or 'cpufreq_powersave' etc. to the MODULES list in /etc/rc.conf.
c. Edit /etc/conf.d/cpufreq to include valid governor(s) and the proper freqs for your CPU (get these values by running $ cpufreq-info), e.g.
governor="ondemand"
min_freq="1GHz"
max_freq="1.67GHz"
d. Add 'cpufreq' to the list of DAEMONs in /etc/rc.conf (after 'hal').
e. In /etc/pm/config.d/ create a file 'config' and in it list the modules to be unloaded before suspend, e.g.
SUSPEND_MODULES=" button uhci_hcd"
5. If applicable, change the labels for the power and sleep buttons in /etc/acpi/handler.sh.
E.g. in Dell Inspiron 6400 replace PWRF with PBTN and replace SLPB with SBTN.
6. Configure proper handling of lid closure by editing the button/lid section in etc/acpi/handler.sh.
I don't know how to do that as yet but the following hack at least will allow you to close the lid after putting the laptop on Standby and have the screen come back to life after resuming, rather than having it remain black.
Put the following shell script '000hacks' into /etc/pm/sleep.d/ and make it executable (you'll have to install vbetool):

[SOLVED] xfce+slim, suspend to RAM causes black and white strips
I recently installed a fresh copy of Arch. When I click the "suspend to RAM" xfce button the screen turns off as it should, but when I try to resume I see 5 columns of black and white stripes (like a flattened checkerboard ). Alternatively when I click the "suspend to disk" (hibernate) button the screen turns black but the backlight is still on, the only way to get out of this state is to do a force shutdown with the button.
I don't know if this is just an xfce problem, or if slim is also part of the problem, but it doesn't hurt to let you guys know about that as well.
Reading about this problem somewhere else as a probably graphics driver issue, here's my graphics card:
NVIDIA Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)
and I installed the Nvidia nouveau driver from here. I didn't see anything on that page about this kind of issue.
I also tried to add "ck-launch-session dbus-launch" to my .xinitrc file, I knew it probably wasn't the solution but I wanted to try anyways. didn't work.
I also have 2 gigs of RAM and 3 gigs in swap partition.
What do you guys think?

I reread the docs on suspend and standby here and the instructions are implying I should already have such a file, (since they say to modify it rather than create it), but I've installed and reinstalled the pm-utils and don't have any file there.
It's kind of important too, since i'm thinking I should put my graphics driver as one of those suspended modules...
Edit: one more interesting tid bit, when I use "pm-suspend" in the tty command line (by disabling the slim service and never going to xfce) I suspend fine. I need to have root privileges but I can just use sudo. (this is another reason why it could be a graphics card issue or I guess a privileges issue, hmm)
Edit2: I just tried to login as root from slim and hitting the suspend button, but got the same issue. So it's likely not a privileges issue. Strange.
