LHi won't letterbox on CRT

First of all, anamorphic analog scaling works great on FCP.
I have a Kona LHi in my MacPro3,1. I have the latest Adobe Plug-in installed. My Sequence settings call for an anamorphic or letterbox display on my Analog out.
I don't get anything but a full-screen output on my analog CRT. No matter what settings I use in the AJA Adobe plug inside Pr, or the AJA Control Panel app.
I can apply the proper setting in the AJA CP; then switch to Pr with the workspace size reduced so that I can see the AJA CP, and as soon as I activate Pr, the settings change, and the anamorphic setting is turned off. It changes the Analog selection to Primary, which doesn't do letterboxing; that's only available to the secondary output.
This tells me that the AJA Plug in Pr isn't allowing the app to use the secondary output at all. No matter what Secondary Format options I choose, they are ignored.
So... is this a Pr issue, or an AJA Adobe driver issue?

Video won't letterbox

I have a HD video that when I burn a DVD it won't letterbox. In fact, it compresses the video vertically. I end up with a black frame around the entire image. Are there settings that I'm missing? It letterboxed automatically in iDVD 4.
Also, the discs will play on computers, but not on standalone DVD players.
Anyone experience these things or have solutions?

iDVD and 16:9 formatted movies still have some issues.
1st, unless the 16:9 movie comes from iMovie, iDVD doesn't know it's 16:9
You need the "Anamorphicizer" to fix this. Get it here:

This should get iDVD to realize your original movie is 16:9 content.
However, the way iDVD sets some of the flags in the final DVD, some DVD players still won't letterbox the output. This fix is not needed by all DVD players, but you will get more consistent letterboxing if you use David A's "cookbook" to fix your iDVD images before burning.

On 2 of my personal DVD players (Pioneer & Apex) , I don't need this fix - but to get letterboxing on my third DVD player (PS2), the cookbook is a must. It is a bit involved, but does the trick. You need to change permissions before editing the files.

Compressor 3.5.3 won't letterbox or remember saved Padding settings

I'm taking a screen capture out of ScreenFlow into Compressor 3.5.3 and I cannot get it to letterbox to 16 x 9. I'm not new to Compressor and have tried everything I can think of and done numerous searches searches with no success.
-Original Pro Res 422 file is at 1600x1000
-Inspector/Geometry tab is set to: Cropping- Custom, Dimensions- 640x360 Custom 16x9, Padding- Custom
(I've tried many times, but the Padding setting of 16x9 won't stay. I hit "Save", click on another preset, come back and it's returned to "Custom". This is likely connected to the problem, but re-booting the program doesn't help).
-Inspector/Filters tab: Letterbox- Type: Matte or Scale (neither works), Position- Center, Output- 16x9
(This doesn't work either. The settings do get saved, but no letterboxing.)
-Inspector/Encoding tab: Use x264 encoder.
Am I missing something simple and obvious? I can easily export from QuickTime 7 or even from ScreenFlow directly and it works as it should. The reason I choose Compressor is simply to save my settings as a preset since they aren't retained in QT 7 when I create a different type of export.
I don't have to use Compressor. In theory, it's just to save me time, but after an hour and a half, it's faster just to jot down my settings and then re-input them into QT 7 to export with letterboxing.

I switched the Padding setting back to: "Preserve source aspect ratio" and it worked this time. It was probably the first thing I tried without success, but it's fine now.
I did notice that after numerous export tests that the final quality when viewed in Quicktime was slightly different when I used the padding vs. having the padding and Filter Letterbox settings both on. Oddly enough, it seemed a bit better when using both. This could just be a bit of randomness in that every single export will be of slightly different quality, but it is easy to see a difference when you take an exported screen capture at 640x360 and view in full screen mode. Anyway, I guess it's all working now.

Clips suddenly won't letterbox?

In my first widescreen project I've created several sequences. All clips appear in the Canvas in (letterboxed) widescreen aspect. I burned a test DVD and they played letterboxed on a full-screen TV without distortion, exactly as I had intended.
When I resumed work on the project today, every clip I moved to the Timeline showed in the Canvas in 4:3 aspect. The work I did previously remains unchanged. All those clips and sequences still show up letterboxed in the Canvas. But whatever I insert alongside them refuses to letterbox.
I'm still working from the same original clips. I haven't logged any new clips. In fact, I'm only using the same clips in different places. "Anamorphic" is checked in the Browser for all sequences and clips. "Fit To Window" and "Show As Sq. Pixels" is selected in the Canvas, same as always. I've trashed prefs, restarted, repaired permissions. Nada. Is there some simple setting I'm overlooking?

your DV anamorphic is a 'true' anamorphic.
What you might be asking is there anyway to have a true 16:9 timeline. The answer is not using most resonably editable formats.
What you may want to do if you shoot DV anamorphic is to edit the material on a timeline with the anamorphic preset. If you are going to dvd, simply export the file using current settings and use it to build a DVD. Just make sure DVDSP knows it is anamorphic footage. When played, most DVD players will automatically add the letterboxing.
If you have a very old dvd player that doesn't add letterboxing, in FCP create a 4:3 sequence and drop your anamorphic sequence into it. It should format as a letterbox then output that sequence and burn to dvd.

HD export won't letterbox

I've been through this problem before, but for some reason I'm running into it again. I export my DVCPRO HD 720p60 (960x720) using current settings and drop it into Compressor, then use DVD best quality 90 minute settings at 16:9. After verifying my track settings in DVDSP I burn the DVD. In the past, my DVD has correctly letterboxed the 16x9 footage on a 4x3 TV and also displayed correctly on a widescreen TV at 16:9. Now however, no matter what I do I get a squeezed picture on the 4x3 TV!
What I have tried:
-Exporting square pixel 1280x720 uncompressed for compression: no good
-exporting currents settings (DVCPRO 720p60 which is 960x720 with a 1.2 px aspect): no good
-Every possible setting in aspect ratio even though I know they wouldn't work: no good
One last note, and this makes me suspect there's possibly corruption somewhere in compressor: I've been unable to make changes to the Dimensions area of the Geometry tab, they are permanently grayed out.
I'm at the end of my rope here, I have been struggling to do this for 2 days and getting nowhere. The most frustrating part is I've done this a hundred times before and never had this issue.

When you simulate the dvd on your mac, is it correctly formatted for playback there? If so, then the problem is likely a setting in your DVDSP file. When you click on the track in your graphical view, is the display mode set for 16:9 letterbox?

Imported 16:9 DV footage won't automatically Letterbox

Hi All,
Hope someone might be able to assist regarding my little dilemma in iMovie 6.0.2 please.
I'm using an iMac (Intel) with 2Gb RAM - 250Gb HDD, with 125Gb free space.
- I have recorded footage in 16:9 format on my miniDV camera
- The new project in iMovie was selected as "DV Widescreen"
- Connection being used to import is Firewire.
- Footage has been imported ok, size is 17.9Gb
- However iMovie just doesn't want to automatically letterbox the clips that it I have imported.
The footage was imported in one effort (basically just let the camera play)
I have never been able to get iMovie to automatically letterbox any of the footage that I have as described above bar my first attempt at using iMovie (trial and error)
I have several other tapes of footage all in 16:9 that have been letterboxed and I want to keep it the same. I will be joining different clips of each project to make my movie.
The dilemma is I know of a way that will automatically letterbox the footage that I have imported, but that will mean that I need to be in front of the computer. I will have to stop the import somewhere midway, iMovie will then automatically letterbox and then I will have to repeat for the remainder of the footage on the tape.
The above takes far too long. I have many tapes to go through and want to be able to have everything imported so that I can pick and choose clips, edit and then convert to DVD. The plan was to import during the evening and wake up with the footage imported and letterboxed.
Can someone tell me if there is an option with iMovie that will allow me to letterbox the footage after it has been imported?

It seems that iMovie is not reading the flag from the
camera that should tell it the material is 16x9. It
thinks it is 4x3- that is why it is adding the
pillarboxing (to make it "fit" in 16x9).
I don't know your camera- but I've never had any
problems with our 2 Sony's in 16x9 mode. Do you have
the "Automatic Dv Pillarboxing and Letterboxing"
checked in prefrences? Maybe you could try a test
import with the "opposite" setting and see if that
makes any difference. You might also try setting up
a 4x3 project to see if the material imports into
that with proper letterboxing. Are you using the
same camera you shot with to load the material? One
time, we loaded a friends tape, but through our
camera and iMovie did not pick up the flag
correctly.

I am using the same video camera that I used to record to import the footage.
I have recorded something in 4:3 and 16:9 to test and everything is fine.
I just need to know if I am able to Letterbox the footage that I have imported in my first post manually as iMovie isn't doing it automatically.
Seems to me that there is a flaw within iMovie, where if the footage is too long and or the imported file is too large it won't Letterbox correctly.

4:3 project to letterbox/16:9

Creating new demo reel for director, he had 4:3 clips which I loaded in FCP. He wants dvd to show in letterbox on CRT and 16:9 in HD screen. Edit is simple but I can't find the right settings for creating above. Tried Compression 16:9 & 178 but it came out 4:3 squeezed in. Also tried thru Streamclip and it was 16:9 stretched. What's the best way to do this, I could take 4:3 squeezed and distort?

You'll need to edit in a 16:9 timeline and scale the 4:3 clips until they fill the frame. Since you'll be upscaling the 4:3 footage you'll loose quality though, and if you watch that on some 42" screen it might not exactly be what you want for a demo reel.

Do not distort the clips .... especially for a demo reel. Just scale them.

My Windows phone 8.1 can't seem to find any certificates, needed for VPN

Hello,
I set up an IKEv2 VPN at home so I could use it on my desktop as well as on my Windows phone.
Now, I have two options which are supported by the VPN: 1) I can use username/password, but then I have to install the root certificate. 2) Use the client certificate.
Now I've tried both but none seem to work. When I use username/password I get error 13801, which apparantly means that it can't find the root certificate. When I try to set up the VPN using the client certificate, I can't set it up because when I want to
choose a certificate, it says there aren't any.
I have installed both (several times by now) using the PFX and PF12 formats. I've tried regenerating them. None of this helps.
My phone won't accept any crt or pem files so that's not gonna work either.
I've tried restarting the phone, that didn't help either.
Any suggestions?

Okay, I didn't get it to work with user/password authentication, but I did manage to use a client certificate.
What I had to do was regenerate the certificate with Extended Key Usage: ClientAuth.
Now, I'm facing a new issue because the server isn't accepting me for some reason, which apparantly has something to do with authentication or encryption. I haven't figured that out yet so I'll have a look at the server software instead.
But if anyone knows what kind of thing Windows phone could be asking for that Windows desktop doesn't, that could be useful.

16:9 "squeeze" for broadcast?

i know this has been covered before, but i searched and couldn't find anything on it.
i'm shooting 16:9 squeeze on a dvx100 for export to dvd and possibly film blowup. but i also want the option of broadcast airing.
now i know if i go dvd, dvd players can detect aspect ratio and play correctly regardless of 16:9 or 4:3 screen (given on 4:3 it letterboxes.)
but for broadcast...
what i'm looking for is to have one master on beta sx that is widescreen but will air correctly on a widescreen tv set and letterboxed on a 4:3 set.
will it do that or do i have to do a 16:9 AND a 4:3 version?
and if i have two versions, if i use the 4:3, it won't be widescreen on the widescreen set or
if i use the widescreen version, it won't letterbox on a 4:3 set.
is this correct?
anyoneone in this situation and how did you handle this?
remember, i'm talking boradcast now....

Here in Finland the digital broadcasters (still Standard definition) broadcast programs in either anamorphic 16:9 or in 4:3 depending on how the program was produced - the consumer DTV boxes do the same letterboxing of 16:9 content as DVD players are doing if your set is 4:3.
Only the analog channels (which will be switched off next year) broadcast strictly in 4:3. The broadcaster does the letterboxing of any 16:9 content before transmitting.
So in this scenario "anything goes". The preferred format here is 16:9 though, for future proofing.

A strange aspect ratio problem

When I watch DV anamorphic footage straight from the camcorder to a 4:3 TV the TV letterboxes the image which is great.
The problem is the TV won't letterbox when I am doing colour corrections with the footage going from the mac to the camera and then to the TV. The strange thing is the camcorder screen will letterbox in this set up.
I don't like doing my corrections on a stretched image. I will if I have to but I would like a work around.

Enable the pixel aspect ratio correction in the comp viewer. You are using a non-square PAR because your sequence settings are set to HDV/ XDCAM and without telling AE about it, it can't correct the preview.

Alright guys your responses determine my future in video editing.
So i have heard so many negative things about HDV (read the forums). I am starting to shoot in 2 weeks for a project i want to premiere for next summer. I shoot surfing and have been for the last 4 years. I currently use fcp hd and and xl2 with a 23" cinema display (never had a problem (EVER). If possible i would like to use my previous footage (DV) and incorporate it with the majority of my footage (yet to be shot).
I am not the best on HD terms and i feel like i need to convert because it might be better now than later. But yet if i keep shooting at 29.97 SD for ( a year) my footage and video will look outdated.
I love canon and willing to go out and but it today ( xh-a1).
i dont mind buying the matrox mxo, and the high quality tapes. but i do mind being outdated in 4 monthes with prehistoric hdv equipment
I am going to purchase the latest version of FCP regardless.?

Not much to say that I can afford the time for. HDV is an extremely compressed format. It also has temporal compression, which not only means the quality varies over time, but that FCP has to work really hard just to show it to you. It's a cool gimmick that is capable of giving a pretty good picture under ideal circumstances, but not without a lot of hassles.
The point was that if you do fall for the HDV gimmick, just make sure you don't subject your material to another HDV compression. That would seriously screw it up, and is completely unnecessary.

You get whatever your source material and/or sequence settings say you get. You won't get true (CRT) monitoring on a tight budget in any HD format. So unless you can afford both the MXO or card and the monitor that justifies it, you would have to depend on the computer display. Which isn't great.

The CRT won't come on and the computer won't turn off. ???

Hi all,
I just got another free Rev. A iMac CRT today - it was in an old, abandoned school and the people who were moving everything out of the school thought it was dead, so they gave it to me. I tried starting it up, and it wouldn't turn on. When I took off the back to see if it had any good parts in it, it turned out everything was unplugged in the back, so I plugged it all back it. It worked great, I was deleting the school's files and apps so I could sell it, until a few minutes ago when I tried to wake it up from sleep. The display just wouldn't come on. I though it just wasn't waking up. I tried typing on the keyboard and clicking the mouse, and I finally pressed the power button on the keyboard, when I heard the normal beep it makes when you press the power button on the keyboard and it gives you the dialogue box "Do you wanna turn it off, restart it, etc?" I thought, "this is weird, why isn't the display on?" So I pressed the enter key, figuring that Turn Off was the option selected and that the display would come on when I turned it back on. Sure nuff, the computer turned off. I waited a few seconds and turned it back on. The display still wouldn't come on. I waited a few minutes til I was sure it was all the way booted up. It won't respond to the keyboard, the mouse, repeated jabs in the reset button on the side, or the power buttons on both the unit and the keyboard. I held down the power button for an entire minute and the display won't turn on and the computer won't turn off.
This is totally bizzare. Does anyone know how to a) turn on the display or b) turn off the computer? It's looking like I'm going to have to unplug it and try again later.
By the way, it's running 9.2.2, like the one in my signature line.

I finally pulled the plug and restarted and it's working fine now. Does anyone know what happened? I think it could've had something to do with the PRAM battery; every time I've started it up it's said the date is January 1956 and the time is 9:55. hmmm...
Edit: I just realized that in addition to the date being 1956, the hard drive was completely randomly renamed to "k hortdpc." ***???
Another edit: I just realized I probably renamed the hard drive in my frantic random clicking and typing - I probably accidentally clicked the hard drive name and randomly typed a new name in my attempts to wake up the computer. oops

Old 21" CRT won't calibrate

Hey all, I have an old 21" CRT, my son did something to it and now it's got a very 'saturated' look to it and it won't calibrate any more. Could this be age, or is there something that I can do that I haven't tried yet?

Found out the trouble, the dvi adapter that connects the old monitor connection to the newer g5 has a problem, just moving it a bit fixed it. Still blurry though.

Won't preserve aspect ratio letterbox?

I have a cannon hd camera that films in 1920x1080 which is a 16:9 aspect ratio if I understand correctly. I'm trying to export this video size to a 640x480 using the quicktime conversion. From what I've read online and in the manual if I check "preserve aspect ratio", "letterbox" it should put two black bars on the top and bottom so that the video itself isn't stretched to fit into the 640x480. However, though I've tried many times, the exported video always comes out stretched. Is something turned off that I don't know about? Is there a problem in the software?

I'm having the same problem and it's driving me nuts. I have HD footage and I'm trying to save a small sample as a demo. I want to email either a 16:9 clip or a 4:3 letterboxed clip. No matter what dimension I export to, it ends up as 4:3, even when "letterbox" is checked. For example, if I export to 720x480 (4:3), it's squashed. But if I export to 720x480 (16:9), it's squashed AND I have black bars ON THE SIDES! So I'm telling FCE to go from 16:9 to 16:9 and it converts it to 4:3 and then puts black borders on the side? How does this make any sense??
When you say "Place your edited widescreen sequence in a 4:3 sequence" what do you mean? I don't see sequence properties that control the aspect ratio.
Also, what should the compression type be? Like I said, I'm just trying to export a small 30-second demo clip. All of my exports are turning out 40+ MB. If I do a straight Export->Quicktime movie (no conversion) then my 30 second clip is more like 400MB.

PB G4 15" Using FW direct won't clone to ext FW drive using iMac CRT (G3)

PB G4 15" 1.5, 512 mb ram, original 80gig internal HD having sleep issues (meainging it will go into sleep mode whenever it wants and will not stay "awake")
iMac CRT G3 as stable platform, still running strong after 6 years :^) !!
Both are still running (ugh, I know) 10.3.9
I recently purchased an IBM/Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 80 gig HD and an no-name-brand 3rd party ext. FW/USB 2.0 drive enclosure to (hopefully) clone the G4 15" PB and wipe out it's drive and start from scratch to see if it's a OS issue rather than a hardware issue causing my sleep issues.
I originally partitioned the PB 15" HD to have 3 partitions and the cloning process SEEMED ok on the non opertating system partions, but carbon copy cloner is having problems with any folder larger than 4 gigs, e.g., a VPC drive image doesn't clone properly, CCC only cloned 1 gig whereas my VPC image is about 6 gigs, also, my applications folder, which is approximately 5 gigs on the PB G4 15", hangs when CCC tries to clone it to the Ext HD drive.
Did I shoot myself in the foot by buying a non-name-brand Ext Hd FW/USB enclosure? Are there jumper settings on the Ext HD that I should pay attention to? I currently have the Deskstar HD set to "Primary," Disk Utility partitions the ext HD ok and First Aid results in no ploblems. Is my iMac DV 500mhz too slow to keep up with the cloning process? I only have 256mb ram/original 20gig HD.
I've heard/read that 10.3.6 and up causes problems with ext HD FW/USB enclosures.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated!!

Here's a better idea. Erase the external drive. Clone your brother's internal hard drive to it as a backup. Test to see whether the Powerbook will boot normally to the clone. If it doesn't, stop right there and run a full battery of first aid and repair utilities on the internal drive, then clone it again and test again. If all tests on the internal drive are OK, your external drive enclosure(s) may just not be bootable — some aren't.
If the clone on the external drive boots the PB with no problems, upgrade the internal drive to Tiger so your brother can put it through its paces for a couple of weeks. If he likes it and decides to keep it installed, clone the internal drive again to the external drive, so Tiger and any work done in the interim is backed up. If he wants to stick with whatever older OS he was using, erase the internal drive and clone the external drive back to it. In the latter case, be sure to make a separate backup of any documents that have been created or modified during his trial period, before restoring the older clone to the internal drive.
Note that a Powerbook with Firewire 800 is Aluminum, not Titanium, and there's a separate set of forums for the Albooks:
