Libjava.so

I've recently installed version 1.3 of the sdk on our Solaris (2.6) server. The only previous version installed is version 1.1, which is in the /usr/java1.1 directory. The new version was installed in the /usr/j2se directory. I modified the java symbolic link to point to the /usr/j2se directory instead of the /usr/java1.1 directory.
When I execute the "java" command at the command prompt, I receive the following error:
ld.so.1: java: fatal: libjava.so: open failed: No such file or directory
Killed
There is a file named libjava.so in the old tree structure (/usr/java1.1/lib/libjava.so), but there's also a file with the same name in the new tree structure (/usr/j2se/jre/lib/sparc/libjava.so). Is there some other symbolic link that I need to modify in order for the file to be found, or is there some other piece to the installation process that I missed, or is it something else entirely?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich

I found it, it was a @#%*@ PATH problem. Argghh. Don't you just hate it when someone installed something incorrectly four years ago that has an impact on something you're doing now?

I am curious if both our problems have to do with the install of Oracle for PA-RISC vs Oracle for Itanium? Does the PA-RISC only create .sl libraries and the Itanium version only create .so libraries?

    On the other hand, performance packs are for scalability only, so development
    systems can run just fine not using async IO.

    Well, it seems to work OK with the exception of the no performance pack.
    However if its not supported when will the Linux version be available as I

  • Gcc 3.2, __divdi3, and libjava.so

    I've been staring at this one off and on for quite a while now, and finally got something that should make for a decent question.
    When I install the j2sdk-1_4_1_01-linux-i586.bin file on my Linux system, which is based on Linux From Scratch -- everything is compiled from source -- and was built with gcc 3.2, I can't get any of the included programs to start up properly. If I just unpack the .bin and set up the JAVA_HOME and PATH variables, then when I run "java" (i.e. no arguments), I get the following:
    There was an error trying to initialize the HPI library.
    Please check your installation, HotSpot does not work correctly
    when installed in the JDK 1.2 Linux Production Release, or
    with any JDK 1.1.x release.
    Could not create the Java virtual machine.
    Which I've seen a couple of posts for in these forums. Most of them were for Solaris, but they were the exact same problem, and they involved either not having LD_LIBRARY_PATH set properly, or just not preloading the correct libhpi shared lib.
    So I tried LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but I think I screwed it up because it did the same thing. But then I did an "export LD_PRELOAD=$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386/native_threads/libhpi.so" to manually preload the HPI lib, and the error changed into something very familiar (to me):
    Error occurred during initialization of VM
    Unable to load native library: /home/bilbo/j2sdk1.4.1_01/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __divdi3, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
    Now I've seen this exact same error (albeit with a different .so file) with nVidia's closed-source, binary-only video drivers, using both versions 2960 and 4191. Version 3123 (the only release between those two) works just fine, and when I originally reported that bug to nVidia, they said "wait for 3123". 4191 broke it again, but that isn't really important now.
    I don't know what they did in 3123 to fix it, but I do know that it's possible to do.
    Running nm on /lib/libc.so.6 and grepping for divdi3 produces:
    001051c0 t __divdi3
    001057d0 t __udivdi3
    So the symbol is there. It's marked as in the text segment, but with a status of "local" (according to the nm manpage, "if [the letter is] lowercase, the symbol is local; if uppercase, the symbol is global (external)"). But I couldn't find out what the difference was with a search of google.com/linux at all.
    I do have the old (gcc 2) libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 file that the SDK was complaining about before ("before" being late 1.3/early 1.4 releases, IIRC), but I don't think that file matters anymore. At least, when I didn't have it, I got the same errors.
    Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    I'm using the following versions of different things:
    binutils 2.13
    glibc 2.2.5+linuxthreads
    gcc 3.2 (which I did say)
    kernel 2.4.20 plus -preempt
    Sorry, forgot about that all in the last post. If any more info is required, ask away.

  • Libjava.so not found error?

    I have installed j2sdk1.4.0 beta 3 on solaris 2.6. When I run "java" from command line the following error will occur unless the current directory is the "$JDK_HOME/bin" or this directory is specified as the prefix of "java", such as "$JDK_HOME/bin/java".
    Error: could not find libjava.so
    Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment.
    I'm sure that I have correctly set up the relative ENVs, such as PATH, JAVA_HOME, JDK_HOME, etc. I also include the directory "$JDK_HOME/jre/lib/sparc" that contains the libjava.so file in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. But it still doesn't work. The other versions of JDK(1.2.2, 1.3.0) on my workstation do not have this problem. Why? I have not installed the patches of j2sdk1.4.0 beta 3 because I have not root permissions. Is it the reason?
    Thanks in advance!

    Anyone can help me?

    basename: not found
    uname: not found
    expr: not found
    dirname: not foundLooks like your environment is damaged, PATH is set erroneously or something.
    java is a symlink to a wrapper script:
    $ java -version
    java version "1.3.1_09"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_09-b03)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_09-b03, mixed mode)

    $ file /usr/lib/jdk1.3.1/bin/java
    /usr/lib/jdk1.3.1/bin/java: symbolic link to .java_wrapper
    And the script needs basename, dirname ...
    $ egrep 'basename|dirname' /usr/lib/jdk1.3.1/bin/java
    progname=`basename $0`
    PRG="`dirname $PRG`/$link"

    They can be found in /usr/bin.

    I think, I can help you. Show your programme code first.
    I guess, your programme is printing something on the standard output and the linux shell is again trying to execute it.

  • Libjava.so not found

    I have been pushing compiled jar files up to my hosting company's site. From time to time, though, it is useful to compile a class or two on their site, to which I can telnet.
    They are a Linux site, with JRun app servers. When I try to compile, I get the following message:
    [goberle goberle]$ javac doiefnsld # a fake name for demo purposes, of course
    Error: can't find libjava.so

    java is hashed (/opt/IBMJava2-13/bin/java)
    [goberle goberle]$ type javac
    javac is hashed (/usr/bin/javac)
    There is a javac in /opt/IBMJava2-13/bin/exe, but that yielded the same result. There are no /lib/libj* files. There is a libjava.so in /opt/IBMJava2-13/bin/exe. On my day job, using Solaris, I know I can setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH=colon:separated:list:of:dirs:to:look:for:so:files, or under a Korn/Bourne variant shell, export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=etc. But that didn't help.
    As I recall, HP-UX had a different convention, so I am starting to believe that this is not a Unix "standard." Can anyone tell me how to tell Linux to look someplace besides /lib for .so's? If there is more too it, or I am just stupid, please tell me.
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!

  • JDK Problems - libjava.so

    I downloaded and installed "j2sdk-1.3.1-02b-FCS-linux-ppc.bin" from the penguinppc.org web site and followed the instructions. I was able to INSTALL under /usr/local and also changed my PATH variable.....but later when I test my java version it gives following error - wonder why
    #./java -version
    Error: can't find libjava.so.
    I am using IBM PowerPC (pseries) with Red Hat Linux 7.1
    Any related information on this is appreciated.
    THANKS!

    This isn't very on-topic for this thread, but there are some issues that should be brought up.
    First - for modern PPC machines running a Linux kernel, the j2se1.3.x is ancient, and crashes often with programs compiled with gcc-3.x.x, if it runs at all. This means most recent distributions, from Debian to Fedora and Mandrake and everything in-between - though i only know the state for java on Debian most closely.
    I was wondering if Sun forgot about PPC and other non-x86 platforms - did they suddenly forget they even exist? IIRC, there are something like *20* architectures that can run a linux kernel for 2.6.x, and some 15-odd or more for 2.4.x kernels.
    I suggest that there should be more work put into porting java to more platforms for Linux, since there are so many machines running it now, and I think it would be a wise move on Sun's part to do so.
    As to the options PPC users have - we have Blackdown or IBM's ports - BLackdown has only the ancient 1.3.x and IBM doesn't build the browser plug-in in their 1.4.x (yes I've read their FAQ and install guide).
    As to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, that shouldn't be used - it's a security risk, and not needed. All you need to do is edit /etc/ld.so.conf to include the path to the java binaries and libraries, and include the path to the java binaries in your $PATH env. var.
