Libraries and stuff

Hi ... I'm probably being dim but I can't quite get my head around the way this works ... for instance there's a Library in my system folder, another one in the root of the hard drive and yet another in my home folder and one in each of the three other users home folders ... all amounting to about 5gb. Are all these libraries needed... do they keep themselves synched ... indeed, do they need to ? Of course within this library folder are just as many duplications. Do I need to do any house-keeping can I get rid of any of them ... I'm really keen on keeping my computer 'tidy' but this just makes me confused ?
Thanks for your time
Roger

The apparent duplication is for the purpose of installing items that are accessible at each level by the appropriate user. As a user you can install your own screensavers that will only be usable by you. Screensavers installed at the system level can be used by all users on the system, but modified only by an admin user. Screensavers installed at the root level are also available to all users, but can only be modified by the root user. The same idea applies to all items for which their are duplicate folders (but not duplicate content.) For example, you can install fonts in your user fonts folder and only you will be able to access those fonts. If you have to move your system to another computer it's only necessary to move the user folder in order to preserve your setup. Backing up your user account folder is really all you need to do on a daily basis to protect your files. It isn't necessary to backup the entire hard drive other than when you do system updates.
This may seem "odd" for someone when you are the only user, but OS X was designed for multi-user environments, so its structure is oriented for that type of use. The different levels of access are necessary in a multi-user environment to protect the files of each user as well as preventing each user from having system-wide access.

  • How can I open all my itunes libraries and merge them into one?

Some of my music can't be opened by itunes because it says it is in another library.  As there are several of these and they won't open,I can't see where the songs I want are.  Therefore I would like to open ALL the libraries and merge them into one.  Thanks for any help.

Hmm, read that post of Dave Sawyer's and thought well, that's Ok I have it on my iPod, but no, it's not there either.  Then resorted to Time Machine (not used for a few months (took it away with us when we evacuated to avoid Cyclone Yasi) only to find that is playing up also, and it doesn't appear to be anywhere there either!
One thing leads on to another - Time Machine has only backed up to 3 months back; then there is nothing beyond!  yet there is tons of stuff on it.  Maybe it backs up the whole system each time, and not just the changes made inbetween times.   The prefs. won't appear and so I can't change the setup.
All this just because of one sone!

  • Moving to an external Ethernet Drive - Libraries and Photos are a mess - Cant Find Images

I am in the process of wanrting to consolidate my LR3 files to an 2TB external ethernet drive (connected via airport extreme).  First, are there any issue with using the networked drive.  I've heard that there may be.
Second, my libraries and photos are all over the place.  I cant seem to find the proper catalgues and sometimes files go missing or offline.  So, duringn this move to the new 2TB drive, I want to use this opportunity to find and move all the LR3 "stuff" i can and make the workflow better organized.
How can I simply do that???
    Thanks!

First, let me suggest that there are two issues here ... Storage (exactly where your photos and catalog file are located) and organization (how do you find/search for the photo(s) of interest. These are different issues.
    First ... storage:
You can move your photos and catalog file anywhere to meet your storage needs. You move the catalog file simply by moving it in Windows or Mac Finder to the internal HD (or any other non-network drive). Recommended: put the catalog file on your fastest hard disk. Recommended: move the previews (that are located in subfolders where the catalog is) along with the catalog file. Once moved, you open it by double-clicking on it.
You can move your photos anywhere you want them to be, including a network drive. Although I recommend you move them in Lightroom so as to not break the links, you can also move the folders outside of Lightroom and then reconnect (in the folder panel, right-click on a folder and select "Update Folder Location").
Now, you have your files whereever you want them to be. They are stored properly. It makes sense to consolidate your photos on a single drive if possible, and it makes sense to set things up for ease of backup (i.e. all photos in subfolders under a single parent folder) but other storage schemes are fine if they meet your needs.
    Next ... Organization
This is how you set things up so that you can find a specific photo(s) quickly. I strongly recommend that this be done in Lightroom, using keywords, metadata and collections. I strongly dis-recommend that you do this by moving this folder to that location or folder hierarchy to help you be able to find things. I strongly dis-recommend that you do this by renaming photos or folders. Leave them whereever they are (after you have met your storage needs above), and organize via keywords. Assign keywords and metadata religiously to your photos. Keywords give you much more organizational power than folders, because you can have many many keyworkds assigned to a photo, but a photo can be in only a single folder.
I strongly recommend consolidating things into a single catalog. This will enable you to search for any photo, because you have one catalog. If you have multiple catalogs, and catalog A is open, you cannot search for a photo in catalog B.
Once all of this is complete, your photos are where you want them (storage) on your networked drive, your catalog (singular, not plural) is on your fastest disk (storage) and your photos are completely well organized in Lightroom, enabling you to search for them quickly, using the Lightroom filter bar, the keyword panel, or smart collections.

  • Can you use wifi sync with multiple libraries and multiple devices

    Hi all
Does anyone know if you can use wifi sync with 1 computer, 2 libraries and 2 devices?
I have my wife's iPhone synced to 1 library and mine to another library but on the same computer. Will wifi sync work this way or do you need iTunes to be open to the correct library for it to work? As I know you can't have 2 instances of itunes open on the same computer.
    Anyway thanks for any help

I have been looking more and more into this and it appears no.
You need to have iTunes running on the computer to enable it to wifi sync. You can use 2 devices on 1 library but if you don't have all the right options ticked you will then end up with each others stuff on each others device.
To enable wifi sync you need to have your iDevice connected to the same wifi network as your computer and iTunes open on that computer.
With my library open it detected my wife's phone and started to sync. Hasty push of cancel sync button lol.
There is a guide on here somewhere about multiple devices with 1 library which I can't find at the moment that tells you which options to tick so only your stuff stays on your device the the other half's on their device.
Its basically tick 'sync only ticked songs and videos' under summary of your device
Under apps take tick out of 'automatically sync new apps'
Then under edit->preferences click device and click prevent i's from syncing automatically
I think you should then be able to sync both devices to 1 library with mucking them up too much
Hopefully please correct me if I'm wrong
I have tried not doing the last step and asking it to open itunes automatically when phone is connected but this does not work with wifi sync
Have fun hopefully someone else can give us a better answer

  • Balance between hardware, sample libraries and portability

OK, tough one this for me. I have started getting into Logic Pro and I am really enjoying using it alongside light sample libs like GPO4 etc. I have installed numerous loops and stuff from various sites and have not suffered any problems using it on my MacBook Pro 13"
Now, my MBP 13" is latest model with 250gb but only running at 5400 speed. However, it works and with a lot of screen tweaking and a prolific use of kbd shortcuts I am finding it easy to use.
Don't get me wrong - if I use Logic on my Mac Pro with it's 30" cinema display and 2nd monitor it's a lot easier but that's at work and the MBP is my home machine.
Problem is (maybe) is that I want to buy some more major libraries like the EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum and the Choirs and I think I maybe just pushing it too far for my lovely little MBP
I can't afford to buy a stomping great 8 core, 16gb Mac Pro for home - divorce would ensue. And I don't want to anyway - I like linking up the MBP to my midi controller and just messing around. Once done, I crash on the couch with MBP and mix/add effects/mess around with everything - usual stuff
I guess what I am asking for (in a rambling way - apologies) is will I be able to run EWSQL SO Platinum and Choir on my MBP? Forget HD for now - I know the Platinum takes up 200gb - so I may have to go for the Gold Edition
The MBP meets minimum specs so I think it could be OK. However, I am worried I will get massive slow down/crashes once I get past 6 or so tracks through PLAY?
I know I can "freeze" the tracks (whatever that means) and I can obviously bounce say 4 or 5 tracks at a time - maybe keeping the original work in a different project in case I need to come back and tweak it later and then output/import as an audio track into the main project?
I was also wondering - re the HD issues - about getting a FW800 connect external HD for installing the platinum edition? But I guess that would really slow everything down trying to read from one of those instead of the internal SATA drive?
Maybe someone can point me to a 1TB SSD drive for the MBP for under £400/$600 If only! As I reckon that would help!
Oh, the MBP is the base model too with 2.33 processor and 4gb ram, 250GB HD.
What's kind of annoying is when I went to the apple store to buy I had decided on a more expensive 15" machine that had 320gb hd and an i5 processor OR the top of the range MacBook Air with SSD etc - the guy in the store talked me out of it and I agreed the 13" base model would more than meet my needs. He was right - don't get me wrong! But my needs changed within 2 months!! Once I had played with Garage Band I just had to try out Logic and loved it - then I started finding out all this other cool stuff!
Any advice on how I could squeeze usage of libs like EWQL into my little MBP 13"?
I am not a musical pro - just a hobbyist - so have to justify everything financially nowadays!
    Thanks in advance

I have been hitting the credit card recently. Last year I bought a Sony Vaio because I couldn't justify all that money when the new line of MBP's finally came out. Sold it 10 months later - they are meant to be a great build quality? Don't think so!
So, 3 or 4 weeks ago I bought a 13" MBP for browsing and a little mixing with Logic - works nicely - until I start hammering it - but it's good for learning.
Anyway - this new iMac replaced my old 21" 2007 model - wow What a dream!
But you know what I always like, every time I open up one of these boxes? The smell! What is it with Apple? Do they spray something in the box? I think they do!
As for how the migration went - pretty good.
Right now though I still have OS and apps on the 256gb SSD and all the data is now on the 1TB HD. Works so well that I don't know whether there is any point in changing it to be honest. I'm sure I could improve read speed by putting all the logic samples on the SSD but I have over 350gb of them so not sure there's much point!

  • SharePoint 2013 - document libraries and newsfeeds are visible when viewed using Internet Explorer running on the server but not from any other machine

On a single Windows 2012 R2 server I have installed SQL 2012 and SharePoint 2013 SP1 with the latest update roll ups. When I remote desktop to the server using the farm and site collection admin account  and open page http://server_name_here using
Internet Explorer, I'm able to see newsfeeds and document libraries.
If I connected to a separate Windows 7 machine as  the farm and site collection admin account  and open page http://server_name_here using Internet Explorer, I'm able to view the SharePoint pages except I cannot see any newsfeeds or document libraries.
There's just blank space where they should be. I have repeated this process on several other machines that are not the server and get the same result on every machine (I've tried other servers, desktops, adding the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list
in IE, even using firefox). I'm using the same account as I did when I logged onto the server directly. Any thoughts as to what's going on?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the idea, Harsh. What am I looking for?
It is currently set to the default of http://server_name and http://server_name:port_number (the latter is for Central Admin).
When I have access to the server, I have always done so the same way, using http://server_name. This was true when I access it from the desktop of the server itself and when I tried to access it from other desktops and servers (the machines where I had the
issues with the libraries and feeds not showing up). Are there other values I should add?
I have not tried to add http://server_FQDN as we don't plan on using that to access it but if you think it will help I would be happy to add it.

  • I was trying to update my ipod touch and an error occured. Now it says I'm suppose to connect it to itunes and restore it to it's original settings. That's going to make me lose all my pictures and stuff right?

Okay, while I was updating my ipod an unknown error occured. Now It's telling me I need to connect it to itunes, even though it's plugged in already. And when It does connect it shows up as a generic "ipod".  It doesn't even show my ipod anymore. And it wants me to restore it. It said something around the lines of "restore ipod so it can connect to itunes." Isn't that going to delete all my pictures and stuff? I don't think it saved the reboot from when it was updating!I just want all my settings and stuff back! I don't want to lose all my stuff especially my 2,000 pictures on there! Ugh! Help!

Errors when updating leads to corrupt system files and this may be your problem. If you're using windows, connect your device to PC and run any third party app like Syncios. If it detects, you maybe in luck and try to back-up your data if possible. I hope that it won't and if doesn't, there is no other way to recover files. You should be restoring with iTunes and all data will be erased, or else your device may become unusable.

My girlfriend and I both have iTunes account with our own music libraries and we want to combine our two libraries into one icloude accounts so can both then access our one shared libary at anytime in the cloud.  How do we do this?

No it is not possible.  Content purchased from the iTunes Store is permanently tied to the account from which it was originally purchased, and Apple does not provide a way to change it.

Each device only syncs waht you select.

  • Help with Multiple libraries and one storage location for files

I cannot get an answer to this question anywhere and was really hoping that The [H] would be able to help.
Here is my current set up that allows my wife and I to have completely independent libraries and ratings, but use the same files:
-Shared folder with MP3s on a network drive.
-Two PCs, each with it's own Ipod associated to it with individual libraries but all pointing to the same network share for MP3 Files.
-Each PC is using the SAME Itunes account for downloads.
-Each account has it's own library folder also on a network share.
Now to my question(s)/problem with downloaded content:
    (1) Is there any way to have a file that is downloaded from Itunes be automatically placed in a shared location accessible to both Libraries? (Say if I download the latest Jack Johnson album, can it automatically show up in my wife's library and vice versa?)
    (2) Is there any way to share the album artwork versus having two copies of everything(one for each library)?
So my goal is to have two libraries with a central location for ALL files, including anything downloaded from Itunes by each individual user. Is this possible?

Have your wife transfer all purchases from the iPad into iTunes, backup her iPad and then sync with iTunes. Everything ... All media and other content will be available in that iTunes library and she will have a current backup.
Assuming that your son will still be sharing your wife's Apple ID (he is too young to have one of his own) .... When you set up his iPad, restore the iPad from your wife's backup and then select only the content that you want your son to have on his iPad in the iTunes library and then sync that iPad with iTunes.
The game progress is stored in the backup and should transfer onto his device when you restore from your wife's backup. You can always delete any content (apps, movies, music) that you don't want your son to have on the iPad, if you missed it when you synced with iTunes after setting the device up for him.
You can set your sync preferences - any way that you want to - for both devices and still use the same iTunes library for both iPads. So ... Yes you can sync any apps that you want to his iPad and any apps that your wife wants to her iPad. You just need to restore your son's iPad from your wife's backup in order to get his game progress onto his iPad.
    In case you need these....
    Transfer purchases.

Well, yeah.  You want to create separate accounts for each of you, using individual Apple IDs.  I know mothers and daughters like to share clothes, shoes, handbags, etc. but don't share Apple IDs.

  • How can I keep all of my apps and stuff from one ID and move them to another ID without having to buy them all over again?

Me and my mom share an account and I bought all my apps and stuff on their. so I made my own account so that it would just have my stuff and it would charge to my credit card. So I was wondering how you can sink all the apps and stuff from one ID to another or link the accounts so that I don't have to repurchase everything.

You can render the ebook on an instructional application called Zankura. Not only can you control the screen scrolling, but all the students can freely annotate with their stylus. www.zankura.com.

  • Husband and Wife trying to combine music libraries and share between all Apple technologies in the house.

My husband and I both have apple ids which we use to purchase music, movies etc...  We want to combine our libraries and pull from the same.  We've been doing this manually - but wonder if we can use the Cloud to support 2 apple ids or if we have to create a 3rd apple id / email and somehow transfer our individual music to the 3rd apple id / email.  Creating the 3rd email / apple id will be a pain since we will never use this as an email.  We need Help figuring out the best approach.

You can't combine two Apple IDs... I have the same problem I have an iCloud mail account and an Apple ID i use to purchase music with and I'd love a way to combine them. Apple has said in the past their looking into a possible way of doing this but I'm doubtful they will... :/
However, sounds like iTunes Match will probably be the right solution for you http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
