Libraries on separate (internal HD) partition? + bonus rant

Hi. Any opinions on whether having my libraries on their own dedicated partition on my internal HDs (iMac and MBPro) would improve performance? FWIW I am using referenced files, which will continue to live on the boot drive, for now.
Here's the bonus rant:
My A3 experience has gone from elation to frustration to elation almost on a daily basis.
I have followed all the threads here concerning performance and tried to follow all the recommendations. Faces/places off, caches cleaned, previews tweaked, spolight indexing disabled, disks defragged etc, etc, etc and so on and so on... I usually reboot my machines before an Aperture session, and try to make sure that A3 is the only thing running (other than Activity monitor). So much maintenance for a program that's supposed to improve workflow!
I get speedy performance sometimes during adjustments, but sometimes things get so bogged down. I'm talking like 30 seconds to render a sharp view of an adjustment I just made if I am in "zoom" mode, with the infamous "generating thumbnails" activity, which then restarts if I scroll to another part of the photo. Don't even think about making changes to Raw Fine Tuning, NR or sharpening, as those sometimes take up to a minute to render in full zoom view! I'm running the equipment in my sig (not weak machines, but obviously not blinged out Mac Pros with 16-cores and 68GB of ram, which it might take to make this thing render adjustments in real time! (sarcasm alert)
All updates (3.0.1, prokit etc) are done. I am considering going to a witch doctor, or a priest or something to exorcise my machines, as a next step.
If I had to rely on this program to pay my bills, it would have been tossed a while ago. As I am a hobbyist/advanced amateur, I will continue to plug away and hope that somehow Apple figures out how to make this thing more responsive to edits.

I specifically got new drives for this release, I was so excited. Bring on Aperture 3.2 now already. It's not like the images want to stay in Aperture forever, we want and need speedy exports, preview generation, zoom levels etc.
I have the same slow export problem too but I didn't want to mention it for fear of being labeled a whiner

  • Installing windows xp pro on a separate internal hard drive in ntfs

Does anyone here know how to install windows xp professional on a separate internal hard drive in NTFS with bootcamp. In the bootcamp manual it says I can ,but when I reach the list of partitions in xp setup, C: Partition3<BOOTCAMP> {FAT32} Is not on the list. I called support and they told me Apple doesnt support BOOTCAMP on a separate drive and to check the forum though the manual says It can be done.

Rather easy enough to do. People install XP and Vista all the time on 2, 3rd or 4th drive in Mac Pro. I know Vista 64-bit on Mac Pro has best support for addressing RAM and drivers.

  • Same Disc error? (When they are separate internal drives)

Mac G5 with (2) internal drives
    HD #1 - Macintosh HD
    HD #2 - G5 Backup
    Mac OS 10.5.8
I want to backup the Macintosh HD onto the G5 Backup but I'm getting the following error:
    http://powermixx.com/atemp_dir/timemachine/error.png
I've checked the disc usage and it appears I have enough on the G5 Backup to fit everything from Macintosh HD. I'm puzzled why it says the same disc is being used. These are (2) separate drives, not partitions. These images may help illustrate my architecture:

Not easily. To back up everything on the 382 GB used on the Macintosh HD volume at once, Time Machine will add 20% "padding" (workspace and in case the estimate is low), to get 458 GB, which won't fit. You can squeeze a backup onto it only by excluding at least 40 GB (so the added 20% will fit), then removing the exclusions and running another backup. But that's not going to leave much space for future backups of either drive.
I'm puzzled why it says the same disc is being used. These are (2) separate drives, not partitions.
It's probably warning you, as it should, about +G5 Bootable's+ backups being on the same drive as it's backups (when that drive fails, as they all do sooner or later, you risk losing everything). But it will do it, if you click +Use Selected Volume.+
Since you can now get 1 TB external drives for about $100, that's your best bet to back up both internals.

How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?
    Background:
I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
What I've tried that seems to work:
    This seemed to work:
    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Daniel

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

Yes, the two libraries should merge. However, you need to turn on match on one computer and let it finish before adding the second library.
Once you turn march on n your phone then you don't sync it with iTunes, but the merged library will show up on the phone. If you don't turn on match on your phone and continue to sync then all of the music from both libraries should be available to sync to it.
The only bit I can't confirm is what happens if you try to sync music to the phone which isnt actually downloaded into iTunes. Im not in a position to test that, but maybe someone else can help.

    - If the Gmail accounts are IMAP one then if the library is erased and then you use the account old email will be redownload
    - Easing the library on the MacBook does not effect what is on the iMac. On the other hand if you deleted the messages in the Mail app on the MacBook then they will deleted from all devices.

  • HT1449 I want to put different iTunes libraries on separate HD partitions

I want to put iTunes library A on HD partition A and iTunes library B on HD partition B - how do I do this please?

Those files all have different functions.  Your "library" is really everything in the iTunes folder.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management
What are all those iTunes files? - http://www.macworld.com/article/139974/2009/04/itunes_files.html
Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
As for the startup issue you do not change libraries by starting iTunes by clicking on an iTunes file. You must start iTunes from the application icon while holding down the option/alt (not command) key and selecting a library folder or the .itl file..

  • Trying to install vista 64 on a separate internal drive with boot camp

    running into a wall here,
I'm able to install vista x64 when I divide an internal OS X drive that works fine, but I want to load Vista on it's own entire internal disk (bay 4). Bays 1,2, and 3 I use for OS X they are all 1TB drives. When I go through the boot camp assistant and divide a disk 50/50 between OSX and Windows and then boot to the vista install disk, the vista setup screen shows a PARTITION as "disk x partition x BOOT CAMP" and it works to select that partition, format and load windows... No problem. However when you choose the option in Boot Camp to erase an entire extra disk (in my case bay 4) and create a single partition for Windows and then boot to the Vista install disk the disk that was erased of the mac formatting, it doesn't show up with "BOOT CAMP" in the name inside the Vista setup screen, nor will it let you install vista to it, even if you pick the right one and format it inside Vista setup.
I've tried removing all internal disks except the one I want to load vista on and booting directly to the vista set up disc, and formatting with windows command line diskpart inside setup too, unsuccessfully. It simply keeps giving me messages that windows cannot be installed on the volume... I changed it from a GPU type disc using the "clean" command in diskpart but it still won't work! Man!!!
How can I get vista loaded on a separate disk on my mac, boot camp or not? It seems silly that a disk must have an OS X partiton on it before windows will load on it... Is there a way to load Vista x64 on it's own dedicated internal disk? Gratitude for any real help, I'm positive I'm not the first guy to want to load vista on it's own disk LOL!

So I figured this out myself, there was some kind of glitch in boot camp, i bypassed it and formatted the disk with the os x disk utility as a fat 32. pulled all the other drives out, and booted to vista setup. it formatted the disk to NTFS and lets me install vista 64 yahhhooooooooooooo!!!!!

  • How to install windows on separate internal drive?

    Hello,
I've been at this problem for a few days and need some help if anyone has a clue.
I have a late 2008 macbook pro 15". I've taken out my optical drive to install a SSD so that I can run both the existing internal drive and SSD as a DIY Fusion Drive. I'm in need of Windows now and tried to partition the existing fusion drive like I would normally do to install bootcamp. This doesn't seem to work. I then unfused the fusion drive back to two separate hard drives with the OS X Yosemite on the SSD and I want to install Windows on the existing Hard Drive. I've created a bootable Windows USB through the Bootcamp Assistance, but when it comes time to install the Windows install menu does not pop up. I would get a blank black screen which then I would have to restart and boot up into my OS X. In the OS X I can see that a bootcamp drive has been created, but it doesn't show up when I hold Option during the reboot.
If anyone knows what's going one, please let me know!
    Thank you!

  • Can I use a separate internal drive as a back up within the same computer?

    Hello
I am doing a lot of cloning on my drives, and running out of space on my main external back up drive.
Along with my main drive in my G4, I have 2 additional internal western digital dives. So I am wondering if it is safe to use one of these extra drives as a back up drive for the other western digital working drive instead of using a separate external drive.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Anneita

    Hi Tom
My external G Tech hard drive is firewire, so it's bootable. But I'm not using it in this case...just going from one internal drive to another internal drive.
However, as a back up for this G Tech back up drive, I have a w 2T western digital that I have re-formatted as os extended journaled. I am assuming this western digital drive is not bootable since it is a usb drive, correct?
So my question is, since the western digital is not bootable, what is the best way to back up my first G Tech back up drive (which will have 5 partitions from 5 different drives on it) to the western digital? (Another words, the G Tech would be my source drive and the western digital would be my destination drive.)
Could I just drag and drop since the western digital drive is not bootable? What do you think is the best way to go?
FYI, I have also have super duper.
    Thanks for your help.
