Library/Containers
Hi
I am in the process of consolodating and crosschecking backup data (migrating from one NAS to a different NAS system), the data had been copied down to local external drives ( why = nas was suspect, so I wanted to get the data out in the shortest amount of time, to a temporary 'safe' repository)
In historical copies of docs and library , i.e. periodic copies of the working ~/documents and ~/Libray , the Containers directory is 267GB, with each of the 12 directories within it 22 GB
That each subdirectory is the same size is a bit of a curiosity.
By comparison ~/library/containers on my working MacBookPro ( from which the backups were made pre clean install of Mavericks) is only 593 MB
Other curiosities like com.apple.gamecentre contains documents and libray subdirectories, with the mail subdir at 422MB, and similarly for other subdirectories of ~/library/containers
i.e there is repetrition of library directories under eacm/most of the Contaners sub-directories.
This at first glance would appear to be anomalous, but perhaps it is a residue of some transitional system change...
So can Container directories on backups, be deleted, without affecting the main data e.g. if
containers/com.appl.iphoto is deleted from a backup, is the iphoto library itself, that was also backed up at teh time, affected?
Yes I can test thaht via a copy back etc, but may not spot what is affected...
Links to info would also be appreciated.
The Containers mostly store preferences, but might have other support info unique to the app. It is part of the Sandboxing which gives the app an isolated place to play.
Deleting them might break an app, but I have deleted quite a few without consequence.
However, restoring them is not likely what you want to do, anyway. You'd be copying back gigabytes of stuff that doesn't need to be there.
You should look at the documentation for whatever you are using to back up. It should have a setting to not follow links.

Hello,
I am trying to make it possible for apple configurator to be used on multiple computers so that i can share our VPP codes between them. I am in a K-12 setting and would really like to be able to have the ability to sync devices in multiple locations. Has anyone been able to do this?If you have a server, can I suggest that instead of using Configurator to configure many iDevices you use Profile Manager to do it ? Profile Manager is part of OS X Server and it can be used to enroll and configure many iDevices over the internet, without them needing to be plugged into any particular computer for updates. In addition it can be used to lock or wipe an iPad reported as stolen.
http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#profile-manager
Profile Manager uses the same kind of configurations as Configurator, it just sends them over the internet instead of needing a white wire. -
I'm having an issue trying to add certain photos to my Revel Libraries. I am attempting to upload from the Mac app, but Revel is telling me that some photos are duplicates and can't be added. But when I look through my library, those photos don't show up.
I had attempted to sync from my phone but had issues with Revel taking up a lot of space, so I swtiched to uploading from my computer. Could this be causing some of the issues?Truly happy to help!
So, we'll proceed through a process of elimination. First, I want to clear your Mac's Revel app cache. If that doesn't solve the problem, then we'll turn towards your iOS devices.
On you Mac, since you have no files uploading or syncing down to be backed up on your local hard drive, it is safe to clear the app cache. This will force the app cache to be rebuilt (and may require some time for your Mac to sync the index of your files from the server).
Click on your Mac's Finder menu Go > Go to Folder > and enter:
~/Library/Containers
In the Containers folder, delete the following folder and its contents (this is Revel's app cache):
~/Library/Containers/com.adobe.Carousel.mac
Then launch Revel and sign in again. If you disabled Keep Originals in Revel Settings, you may need to turn this off again. If you had it enabled previously to sync / backup your originals on your Mac, you will not need to download them all again. Whatever originals you had on your Mac already are safely stored in your Adobe Revel Library, in your Pictures folder.
After letting Revel Mac sync up with the server, if you are still blocked from uploading those "duplicate" photos, then we'll turn towards Revel iOS apps. Do you Revel iOS apps say "Up-to-date" in the status area at the bottom of your library view? If you tap the cloud, do you show anything still syncing/uploading from that device? If not, uninstall the app -- this will clear out the iOS app cache. Then reinstall the iOS app and sign in again. Can you upload those photos now?
Let me know how it goes!

IMovie won't open library... spiking processor
I went into the iMovie library though the finder and deleted one of the events folders that wasn't showing up in iMovie
(I did this because iMovie crashed on import and wouldn't recognize that those files were even there)
After I deleted the folder, I restarted iMovie. It shows up in the task bar and even shows as a window, but the interface is blank. See image:
I can see that iMovie is trying to do something, I just have no idea what it is:
My only solution to this at this point would be to delete iMovie and reinstall, but before I go that route, I wanted to see if anyone here had a better option.Although its frequently recommended to re-instal and sometimes solves the problem I'm doubtful whether the imovie application itself gets corrupted very often. Its far more likely that some file it is trying to read is corrupted.
Its not a good idea to change anything in a library with the Finder. If the problem event folder is still in the trash I would select it and right-click "Put back".
Do you have a Time machine backup that you can restore from?
You could also try launching iMovie with the 'alt' key depressed. You should then get a window asking which library you want to open. Either open a different library than the one giving th problem or click on "New" to create a new empty one. Can you now open the problem library?
As a last resort and if you are feeling adventurous you could also try navigating to: /Users/<user name>/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovie backups.localized
Here you will find dated library backups that are created automatically. If there is one with a date before you had the import crash, launchiing by double-clicking on it should restore the library to state it was in at that time.
Don't try this last one unless you have a backup of your exisiting library. It is undocumented and I cannot guarantee that it won't give other problems but I have found that iMovie will launch with an earlier library version this way and that it is still possible after wards to launch the up to date version again. However it is quite possible that iMovie automatically tries these backups when it can't launch th current version.

I find sharing books within my one computer near impossible - not easy as music is. It used to be easier, but now with iBooks and some other changes this has become difficult. Also - I can use the search feature to find the "books" folder, and use "Get Info" to find the supposed address, and then not find that folder location at all using a manual method stepping through Finder. So a second question is: where is this file hiding? It is not under User/Library/Containers.... as claimed by "Get Info". It seems that if I buy a book, the family can use it to put on their iPad.
Part of me understands the need to have purchases protected. I hope this does not get more and more complicated for "within family use". It is nice to buy music and share it with my wife, as we used to do with books prior to the iBooks "upgrade" - which mostly consisted of making it impossible to share books. Thanks though for your response; I was hoping for some luck and that maybe I had missed some simple step. To Apple: lighten up.
Best regards and thanks again for taking the time - -
IPhoto not properly sharing same library between different accounts
I have my iPhoto library installed on a 4GB thunderbird external hard drive, brand LaCie in case that matters. I made sure to select the drive and adjust the permissions as recommended in the Apple tech support article - basically you have to select the option to "ignore ownership on this drive" which I did. I also made sure to indicate that both user accounts could read and write to this drive.
Now, I'm trying to make it so that my wife and I, who each have our own accounts on the same iMac, can share the same iPhoto library and import to the same iPhoto library. The problems seem to be occurring mostly on my wife's side. These are as follows:
1) Many times when she loads up iPhoto, it starts off with the default iPhoto library in her directory and we have to keep manually selecting the iPhoto library on the external hard drive.
2) Some of the pictures in the library viewed through her account have wrong thumbnails - that is to say, pictures within a given event show one set of thumbnails but when clicking you get completely different pictures. The same problem is not seen with the same pictures viewed in my account.
3) When syncing iOS devices through her account, iTunes sometimes fails to see the correct iPhoto library, requiring us to again go into iPhoto and select the correct library on the external hard drive.
I would really appreciate some feedback as to how to fix these problems. I thought I did everything correctly but placing the library file on a shared external hard drive and fixing the permissions, but still this problem is ongoing. How can I get iPhoto to only use the library on the external HD as default in her account as well as mine? And how to fix the thumbnail problem?I would trash the cache and the plist files in the affected account.
The cache file is here
/Users/Your Name/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/Data/Library/Caches
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
Iphoto crashes when importing to library
I can import photos from cameras and iphone no problem but whenever i try to import from a memory stick using 'File - import to library' iphoto crashes. I cannot find 3ivx file/folder on my computer which was suggested may cause the problem. Any ideas? The crash report is below.

How do I get back my most recent iPhoto library?
I have no idea what I did, but I cannot find my iPhoto library that was on my computer yesterday. I recognize the photos that I see, but I haven't seen these photos in years. I believe I have made discs of these and I can't understand how they came back. The most recent photos I am unable to find and I was in the process or organizing them to make discs of them and to delete them. Any ideas where to start to get my most recent photos back would be appreciated.
Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try dragging from the trash to the Events icon again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

Problems while restoring iPhoto library with Time machine
Hello,
I've had some problems in iPhoto 11 for a while. Pics being removed or altered in different ways.
I then decided to restore my iPhoto library to an earlier date using Time machine. I used a one week old backup and after 2 hours or so when it was done, no pictures in the folder anymore! I panicked and restored once again, this time on the whole "Pictures" folder. Now i cannot even open the folder, i get this message - "The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I am the system administrator.. ive checked the "get info" option and made sure that all users can "read and write" in the folder.
When I try to restore the Pictures folder again i get a message telling me that it cannot be restored because the folder is being used... even if i dont use it!
I really need help to solve this... 60Gb pictures are gone
Please help me! What can i do? Is there any way to do a complete system restore for 1 week so i get rid of these problems? Or what would be the best and easiest fix?
Sorry if i placed this thread in the wrong place, but i think there are multiple problems that belong in different areas...First ry the following on the library:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If there's no improvement continue with: Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, and if needed Option #1 and Option #2. -
Move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?
Hi! Is it possible to move the iBooks library from its default location on the boot drive (where the iBooks-application also resides) to a different hard drive?
Currently all my ebooks and PDF’s are kept in the default „Books“-folder in the home-library on the SSD-boot-drive of my Mac where the iBooks application is also kept by default (path: Users/„username“/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBo oks/Books). Space is getting narrow on my SSD-boot-drive so that I would like to free up approximately 20 GB by moving the entire iBooks library to a second internal HDD-drive of my Mac or to an external USB-drive.
I have not been able to find any instructions on the internet on how to move the iBooks library nor have I been successful in any of my experiments to move the „Books“-folder. What I have tried is the following:
1. I moved the original PDF-files away out of the „Books“-folder to a different drive and placed aliases from these files in the „Books“-folder. The result is that the iBooks-application will simply re-create a full size copy of the original PDF file in the „Books“-folder. I.e. no saving of disk space!
2. I copied the „Books“-folder from its default location in the user library on my internal SSD-boot-drive to a second internal HDD-drive, erased the „Books“-folder at the original location and instead placed a hard link at the original location. I verified that the hard link is working and pointing to the right location on the second drive. The result is that the iBooks-application will not recognize/show any of the PDF-files at the new location. Trying to re-import the missing PDF-files into iBooks results in the message „This book is already in your library. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re adding?“. By clicking on „Yes“ the same message returns infinitely often. I.e. no successes!
3. I repeated the same procedure as described above under 2. using the „iBooks“-folder which encloses the „Books“-folder (along with three other folders) with the same results as before. I.e. no successes!
(path: Users/„username“/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks)
Does anyone know how to successfully move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?
Does anyone have links to internet discussions about this problem?
Regards BJBI was in on the Mavericks beta, when iBooks was introduced. You can not believe me if you want but it isn't currently possible to store the iBooks library on external storage at this time. The ebooks must be on the path ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books for iBooks to function properly. Any other method you may find to accomplish what you want will be unapproved and could break at any time.

Hello,
I recently purchased a new Macbook Air, running 10.7.3. I copied my iphoto library through file sharing from my previous MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. I have the photos on the new machine, so they're safe. I went back to delete them on the Pro, since I'll be handing it off to my wife. But iphoto will not open, says "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
Two questions:
1. How do I get the version of iphoto they're requesting? If I have to buy it, I'm sorry but I already purchased it once.
2. Is it possible to reinstall just iphoto in it's previous version instead?
Thanks.Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

I recently received a .zip file via email and when I double clicked to open it, the file showed on my desktop and then disappeared. I found the file in /Users/name/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads In this folder I was able to open the Word docs and other files. I also noticed that this folder contains almost every file I've downloaded over the years from Mail. Is it safe for me to delete these files? I'm running ML but don't see the option to show in products below.
Thanks much. The attachments you open place itself in that folder. You can test one attachment with the folder open. No implications for the actual attachment in Mail.
You have more control on attachments if you save them to wherever you want them by right-clicking (or ctrl-click) the files inside Mail. -

importing photos into iphoto, shows "Photo cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library."

currently only has 2,500 photos in iPhoto
Importing about 500 photos, but cant do it due to the message showed above.
Who knows how to fix it?How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

May I safely delete these zip files in the ~/Library/Caches/ folder?
I have a bunch of zip files large in size that are in the following folder "~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.ARM/"
This has now been moved to
Home/library/Containers...
