Library corrupted after moving

Hello all,
My situation is quite unusual, I think. So my computer hard drive gave it's last breath a few weeks back. I keep my library, managed, on a external drive. When I bought the new hard drive I wanted to replace the one in the external drive with the new one, since that one was twice as big and space for photos was getting limited. Because I am currently abroad on study and couldn't have a setup of OS X straight away, I used a Windows computer equipped with MacDrive to transfer the Library from one HFS drive to another so that it might be ready when I finally got my OS.
Now that I have my computer finally running again, to my despair, the library seems to be corrupted. At first came, instead of an image, the maroon box with the message "Unsupported image format". I decided to rebuild the library. The images do now appear but with a small orange triangle in the corner. I can't adjust them, export and the loupe doesn't work.
I tried importing some new photo's that I had taken recently, they work fine, and the only difference I can see after poking around in the library is that the folder in the projects ending with .apimportgroup have a underscore (_) instead of a forward slash but changing that on bad libraries doesn't seem to do anything but make the loupe work. Another thing that seems to be missing in the corrupt projects are files with the name <master>.apfile
Anyone have a clue what might be wrong?

If you copied the library to a Windows system, it's likely it made many changes to file names, given neither FAT32 nor NTFS support all the same characters that HFS+ does, and Aperture's naming structure is long and complex.
You could be in real trouble here... I don't know how many files/folders were renamed, and how to rectify it.

  • Help! Library corruption after moving masters

Hi Guys. I hoped never to find myself in this situation.I'll try to be succint
I made a book using images from several projects. I put the book inside a new, empty project, and started working on it. 100 pages. days of work.
Today I wanted to be able to selfcontain the book in its project to export it. So I simply grabbed all the images from the browser section of the book (lamenting for an easy way to differentiate "used" images from "unused" images, but that's another story)
Aperture duly moved all masters in the project containing the book.
unfortunately, this is where the trouble starts! I'm now getting lots of images with the wrong data displayed: mixed up thumbnails, mixed up "previews" in the book layout. One Image uses pixels from image B in the book layout and from image C in the thumbnails... major corruption?
Of course the first thing I did was to rebuild the library, hoping for the best. It didn't cure anything.
I'd use Steve Weller's suggestion to delete the minis etc. but I prefer to have some feedback before i get going!
(you can be direct in your suggestions: i've got a 96,5% ACT certification for Aperture. not boasting just thinking the bases are well covered)
setup= MBpro as in signature. ApLib and referenced masters all in the same external HFS+ extended (journaled) drive (laCie LittleBigDisk 200).
    cheers
    max-pol

If you export a project and that project references masters that are in other projects, then Aperture makes copies of the masters in the exported project for you automatically. This is a nice feature, but can mean that when you import the project again you have duplicate images.
You can alays duplicate your messed up projects and then delete the AP.minis in one copy. If the result is even worse than what you have now, then you still have a pristine original project.

  • Library corruption after moving images from one project to another.

    Hi,
I have Aperture 1.5 running on a PowerMac G5. I'm using an external disk (via FW800) for the library. The disk catalog has no problems.
Today I want to reduce the number of projects and move a few images between projects. There is one project with a few hundred files where I wanted to move a large subset to another project. I selected the images in the source project and dragged them onto the other project. Some processing happened and after a few seconds I got a dialog which said that some problem with the library happened and that I have to quit Aperture and restart Aperture with control-shift-option. There was only an okay button and the next (same dialog) appeared... and again/again... Finally I was able to quit Aperture and restart Aperture.
After restarting Aperture several images in the source project were grey with a question mark and a link icon in the lower left.
Looks like Aperture cannot move images reliably between projects. That would be a huge bug.
    Regards,
    Rainer Joswig

    Hi Rainer,
Have you tried again to rebuild your Library
(Option/CMD on relaunch)? THis might fix the grey
images in the souce location. Where the images which
were dragged to the other Project OK? What hapens if
you make an adjustment on one of the grey images?
    Does it render the thumbnail?
Also, check you task manager to make sure it's still
not trying to render the thumbnails. Though, it's
most likely not the case given the question mark on
    the image.
I did the library rebuild now. The problems seem to have gone.
Then I also copied a few more pictures between projects. So far
the problem has not shown again.
    Best Regards,
    Rainer Joswig

  • Photo in iPhoto Library Corrupted after forced Restart

    Hi,
I'm a switcher. I've decided to switch to mac after contemplating for almost 6 months. I'm glad I've switched, the Mac is an excellent machine and Superb OS!!
Recently, I have encountered a problem while using iPhoto, Photoshop Element 2 and Preview together. (Please note that I did not tempered any files in iPhoto library. I have stored all my photo in My Documents which I do my editing using PSE 2 and Preview a pictures stored on the desktop). While dragging a file from My Document folder to the Trash, the Dock hanged! I quit all the apps and the dock is not responding and I decided to relaunch Finder by going to Force Quit and still no respond. I try restart the system but it hanged and I have to switch off the mac by pressing the button. When I re-sart the system and launch iPhoto, it prompted that "The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto" and I can't start iPhoto at all. It seems that some of my photo in the library are corrupted. Has anybody has the same experience? Would appreciate if anybody can help.
I've been playing my iMac for about 1.5 months already, and the only apps that I'm not comfortable is iPhoto. I've been using Picasa 2 on my Dell notebook to organize my photo and it's much more simpler and user friendly as compare to iPhoto.

    Jonathan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions and the Mac community. First, what I do whenever I have to have a forced restart of my Mac or have a kernel panic (dark gray curtain descends over the screen with a multiple language warning) is to immediately boot into single user mode and run the file system check (fsck). Here's how:
    FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
    1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
**** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
    3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
    4. Press Return.
Now to your problem. It's more than likely that, as you expected, you have a damaged dB file in your iPhoto library folder and I doubt you'll be able to recover but we'll give it our best shot.
First run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions (also recommended after any software installation or update). Make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library folder (select and type Command-D). Now launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. I would only select the option to rebuild the database.
If that brings it back you're on you way and can delete the backup library folder. If not and the rebuilt library is more messed up than the original, delete it.
Your best shot now is to launch iPhoto and when it asks to find a library or create a new one select Create. In the File menu select the Add to Library option. Direct iPhoto to your old iPhoto Library folder and select it for importing. That should get your photos back partially organized but don't know how much. You will lose album, keyword and comment information.

  • Images Corrupted after Moving from Phone Memory to SD Card

Hi, I have a Sony Xperia Z3 16GB version and Recently I had been to a hiking trip and had used my Xperia Z3 on the trip extensively for photos and vidoes. I have taken as much as 600 photos and few videos of size 2.9 GB. Since the phone memory was getting full, i moved the images, videos using the "Move Files to SD Card" option found under "Settings --> Storage". The Transfer finished successfully and the phone memory was relieved. Now after this transfer, i can't open any images moved to SD card. They all were moved to "DCIM --> 100ANDRO" folder.  The photos seem to be corrupted. ALL OF THEM   This is such a mess and I tried a few tools for recovering the images. They didn't help me any. Can anyone of you have any suggestions on how to recover these photos?  These are memories from a Trip which I can do only once in life time  Please help.  Note: The jpeg image properties show up the File Size clearly which means that the content is still there but somehow corrupted

You could try a check disk - So with the card connected open a command prompt then type the drive letter of the card then : so for example K: then hit enter - Then type chkdsk /f then hit enter - When finished check your cards files

  • IPhoto library corruption after 9.6.1 upgrade

I´ve been working with iPhoto for years, and I had a library with 60gb of photos, but after the last update (that I did some minutes ago), the program restarted and asked me to choose a library or to create a new one. I choose the old one, but it appears to have nothing on it! So i went to finder, just to check the size of the file, and it´s only 7,5 mb, so I think something went wrong. What can I do to restore the library?
I also had a time machine backup done, but wen I go to the old files, they are the shame size (7,5mb), so whats wrong with iPhoto? how can I recover my old pictures?
Some time ago, I was an aperture user, so I have another elder copy of the library (but it´s for aperture), and this one has the 60 gb size, so I think that it is something wrong with the update.
Does anyone know how to deal with this?
    Thanks!

I just noticed that I was using an aperture library with iPhoto instead of an iPhoto one, wich is located (as I can see in Time Machine) inside the program folder, not in the images folder (where it is the new iphoto library), so I think that with the update, something deleted it. I will try to restore that old one from Time Machine, but I think that I will happen again if I update iPhoto. Can I convert an aperture library into an iPhoto one?
    Thanks

  • After moving the library, itunes shows less songs than music folder in finder does

         hi all.
after moving my library manually, i have this situation:

    1091 songs in itunes.
all the songs in itunes are regularly matched with the original file in the finder.
now. how to find the 29 files which are not in itunes? i don't care why this happened !!
    thanks to all in advance

in my itunes media folder there are not audio files! they are stored in music folder of the macintosh hd, as you can see from these screenshots. do you have any suggestion?

  • After moving my itunes library from my old WinXP computer to my new Win7 computer, itunes gives a warning that my content on my phone must be removed and re-synced. I want to merge changes/updates on my phone with my itunes library as normal, not erase it

After moving my itunes library from my old WinXP computer to my new Win7 computer, itunes gives a warning that my content on my phone must be removed and re-synced. I want to merge changes/updates on my phone with my itunes library as normal, not erase it & replace it. My updates/changes will be lost.
How do I merge content on my iPhone & content in iTunes together?

Hopefully you still have the original library and can redo the migration...
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • ITunes freezes after moving library

    Hi all,
After moving my iTunes library to an external HD (I followed the instructions...) threre are some music files (not all) making trouble. I can't play or delete them from iTunes. If I try to, iTunes freezes completely. Removing and re-installing doesn't have any effect so far.
Thanks so much for your help!
    Duko

I too moved my music libary to an external HD; however, I cannot see any music in iTunes? Suggestions?

  • Missing album art after moving library

    Hi,
I had to move my iTunes library to my new computer. The music files were then place on the H:-drive instead of the D:-drive. I also copied the iTunes folder from my old computer over to my new compuer's My Music folder - just as it was located on my old computer.
iTunes had no problem locating the music files, but it appears that all the album art is missing. I have checked that my Album Artwork folder is copied as well.
Is there any quickfix to this, or do I have to reload all the album artwork? There were quite a few albums for which I had located the art manually (not using iTunes) so it's a shame if it's all lost
    Any help is appreciated.
    thanks and regards,
    Svein-Helge Lea

    It's solved !!
It was really silly of me not to see this immediately. On my old computer I had the small album art window showing "selected item", but after moving to my new computer it showed "Now playing". And last night I wasn't playing, hence nothing showed up there.
Now evertything is okay and in place.
    Thanks anyway.

After moving my music library from my old mb to the new one, my new mb pro does not play the files evenly. It takes a break for two sec's and starts playback where it stopped. Ideas anyone?

I may have found an answer here:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive
They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

  • ITunes playlist empty after moving music folder

I have recently moved my music folder to a different partition on my PC. After doing that, my entire song list, including playlists, has vanished from iTunes.
I tried changing the media folder location by going to edit -> preferances -> advanced.
I tried holding Shift when starting iTunes and choosing the correct folder.
I tried exporting the playlist from my iPhone and importing back into iTunes (got an error message that the music could not be located).
    None of the above worked...
    What can I do now?
Keep in mind that I don't want to import my entire music directory back into iTunes, since I don't have enought storage space on my phone to sync the whole thing onto it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hold down shift as you start iTunes. You should get a prompt to choose or create a library. Click choose. Browse to the folder for your relocated library and open the file iTunes Library.itl. If it still comes up empty, close iTunes and use the following technique...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Library corrupted or unreadable

Now, I've read quite a few topics on invalid or corrupt libraries, but none of them have answered my problem yet.
I've tried reinstalling iTunes, tried moving the library to my desktop, tried deleting it, deleting all the files, and start > run > chkdsk.
My problem is this: Everytime I open iTunes up my library is gone. It's been like this for a while now and I'm getting tired of it.
I have a lot of music and it gets tiresome to wait each day for it to load it all.
I checked with the xml and the itl file, and both are "corrupted or unreadable," making it so I cannot delete or move them. I'm sure this is the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
      Windows XP

I am having a similar proble. I am running iTunes version 9.1.1.12 and my music folder went corrupt after updating to this. No other folder on my computer is corrupt. Apple does not seem to provide an option to assist with iTunes problems. Anyone have any iDeas?

I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone

  • IPhoto library empty after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6

    HI,
I have noticed this problem mentioned by others numerous times with no solution that has worked for me.  Has a better fix been found other than recopying all of the files in the 'old masters' list into a new library, effectively losing previously created albums, etc.? Is anyone at Apple actually working this issue since it seems to be pretty widespread and apparently directly related to a bug in iPhoto 9.6?.
OK, first, i have no back up iPhoto library.  I had one previously but my secondary external drive got full and I had to wipe it to rearrange a bunch of data.  Had planned on re-backing it up when I opened iPhoto and uploaded some new photos from my phone, but this event happened and now I am out of luck...
My iPhoto library is stored on an external drive (Wester Digital my Passport for Mac) and has worked fine until yesterday when I plugged my iPhone 6+ in to upload photos and sync with iTunes.  Upon booting up iPhoto, I got a notification that I needed to upgrade my library.  I clicked on the upgrade function and was then notified that a mistake was found and a repair was necessary.  The repair was ongoing when iPhoto froze and entire system failed, giving note that startup disk was nearly full.  After doing system restart and opening iPhoto, I found all photos gone from iPhoto window.  iPhoto is using the correct library and after looking at all internal files in iPhoto library, I found all photos had been moved to "old masters, old thumbnails, old previews".  Files are below:

Size of iPhoto library is still over 500 gigs, so data is there apparently.  I immediately backed iPhoto library up, so at least this data has been salvaged, but I still can't access my photos.  I have used iPhoto's rebuild functions sequentially all the way to full rebuild, with no photos being found.  I then used iPhoto library manager app's rebuild function, and it also revealed no photos.
So, what can I do to sort this out?  Needless to say, with 500+ gigs of photos, I am concerned.  I am hesitant to do the manual rebuild using the 'old masters'  option since I will lose all of my previously organized albums.  Is waiting for Apple to issue a fix that will actually restore lost data only a dream or would that feasibly happen? Thanks in advance for any and all help that can be offered.

    and....
Here is the step by step method to recover your photos into a new Library....
Please read the warning below first.....
The current emergency only workaround fix for this issue when the user hasn't made or doesnt have access to  any backups, is as follows....
    Quit iPhoto
    In Finder, Select iPhoto Library
Control Click on iPhoto Library and choose Show Package
Drag Masters or Old Masters folder to either desktop or external HD if not enough space on System Drive
Delete or preferably move iPhoto Library file to new location so at a later date one can recover the library again if needed..
    Restart Mac
Launch iPhoto... (It should then create a new Library automatically...)
Drag and drop the Masters or Old Masters folder(s) onto iPhoto's icon... or use the menu option in iPhoto to import photos and point to the Masters or Old Masters folders saved out previously.
    Be patient............
Photos will then be re-added to iPhoto... and added to the new library...
Note: If you have both Masters and Old Masters folders then add them one at a time, letting iPhoto import and index all the photos from one folder before adding another....
Important Warning!!!: All modifications and folder structures/albums from the original library will be lost.... but at least the original photos are rescued... and a new library is created that should be free of issues with the current iPhoto/Yosemite combination.
