Library directory compatibility

Hello all,
I've got a Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7 machine. Sometimes - not always, and I have not been able to detect a pattern here - a user who has previously logged into their NIS-authenticated account on a 10.5 or 10.6 machine can not do so on the 10.7 one. Removal of the users ~/Library directory seems to solve that problem.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Does anyone know what in the ~/Library may be the cause of that incompatibility?
Thanks.
Boris.

Thank you! But I'm afraid that the fstab entry doesn't work. I have changed to an UUID scheme and tried some different options, but with anyone of them I get an unprivileged error like this:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdd1 on /media/Iomega

Misfit138 wrote:Agreed.
Change does not equal progress. The whole *kit debacle can be described like, "How to make something simple into something complex and convoluted in 32,768 easy steps."
I don't know what polkit is, could you point me to some source of info?
Anyway if you as more experienced users try to stay away from it the sensible thing is that I do too, I may end up running mpd under my user to be able to access the files (I'm lucky that I'm the only user of this machine).
Thank you very much for your answers and time.

  • Did you know that the User Library Directory is not Backed Up by TimeMachine unless its visible?

    It is the default both in LION and Mountain LION OSX systems to hide the user's Library Directory from visibility. This actually causes a nasty problem with Time Machine Backups and the inevitable Restore. Because it is invisible, it is never picked up by Time Machine and backed up. Thus if one decides to do a restore from a time machine backup it is a complete fail. You must unhide the directory to back it up to time machine.

    Not exactly.  It is backed up, and if you do a full restore you will get it back (I have done this).  It is just hidden in TM just as it is on your HD.  No worries about the TM backup.  All is backed up.

  • Unable to write to library iPhoto library Check that you have permission to write to the library directory

    I think my iPhoto memory is full. I cannot get in to delete photos.  When I open it I get the Unable to write to library iPhoto libraryCheck that you have permission to write to the library directory" and i can't do anything else. I tried alt/cmd first aid and it didn't work.
    I want to get in and move pics over to a USB stick drive but cannot get past the Unable to write to library..message.

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • "Check that you have permission to write to the library directory." I had this error pop up when trying to access a iPhoto Library from Finder.

    The error, "Check that you have permission to write to the library directory." Displayed after trying to access a iPhoto Library from finder. The file is located on the local hard drive and was accessed not 5 minutes before the error displayed. Upon searching the forums I found a similar problem and the instructions said to check a permission box in the "Get Info" tab. There was no box visible and after clicking the arrow to open the "Open With" tab, the rainbow wheel started to spin and I could no longer access Finder or the desktop. I was deleting files trying to make space on my hard drive and noticed as I was deleting files more data was being added to the iPhoto Library. My question is how can I fix this and how can I prevent this in the future, thank you very much for any help, I would really like to keep these pictures.

    I found a similar problem and the instructions said to check a permission box in the "Get Info" tab.
    This applies only when the Library is on an external drive. You cannot ignore permissions on the system drive.
    I was deleting files trying to make space on my hard drive
    What were you deleting?
    and noticed as I was deleting files more data was being added to the iPhoto Library.
    Hard to see how deleting files can add data to the iPhoto Library. Can you explain why you thought this?
    I would really like to keep these pictures.
    Make a back up now.
    Most Simple Back Up:
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
    Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • IPhoto Library Directory shaded

    Hello All,
    First of all, I finally found how to browse the iPhoto Library directory without having to open iPhoto. This feature I'm hoping to be able to disable.
    Is there a way to browse the directory for when attaching files to an e-mail through gmail? When I was in gmail and went to select pictures, I was not able to get to the pictures because the directory was shaded. I had to manually transfer the selected pictures to an accessible directory and select from there.
    I do not wish to get into the details of why I was using gmail and not Mail to send the pictures.
    Thank you.

    There are lots and lots of ways starting with exporting the photos and using the exported photos or looking under the media section toward the bottom of the source pane on the left in the attach window
    click here for a discussion of the many ways to correctly access your photos -- note that going directly into the iPhoto library is not one of them.

  • Obant reports ORABPEL-00005 (collaxa library directory not found)

    Hi,
    I´m trying to deploy some tasks using obant and several build.xml´s. I´ve done this for dozen times now, but today I got an error message that says:
    build.xml:42: ORABPEL-00005
    Collaxa-Library-Verzeichnis nicht gefunden.
    Das angegebene BPM-Library-Verzeichnis "lib/" wurde nicht gefunden.
    Here a maybe-translation:
    build.xml:42: ORABPEL-00005
    Collaxa-Library-Directory not found
    The indicated BPM-Library-Directory "lib/" was not found
    Well, the funny thing is, that when I´m running "obant" from command-line everything works fine - but when I´m calling the it from another ant-script it fails. The corresponding line in build.xml points to the bpelc-task:
    <target name="main">
    <bpelc input="${basedir}/bpel.xml" rev="${rev}" deploy="${deploy}" />
    </target>
    I´ve inserted an <echo ... /> to get the values of those variables (basedir/rev/deploy) used and everything seems to be in order. Here´s how I call this build.xml.
    main/build.xml:
         <target name="deployBPELServices">
              <property name="deploy" id="deploy" value="testDomain"/>
              <ant dir="services/all" antfile="build.xml" target="all">
                   <reference refid="deploy"/>
              </ant>
         </target>
    main/services/all/build.xml:
    <property name="deploy" id="deploy" value="default"/>
    <property name="rev" value="1.0"/>
         <target name="BpelProcess1">
              <ant dir="${basedir}/../BpelProcess1/"/>
         </target>
    <target name="all" depends="BpelProcess1"/>
    main/services/BpelProcess1/build.xml:
    <target name="main">
    <bpelc input="${basedir}/bpel.xml" rev="${rev}" deploy="${deploy}" />
    </target>
    Usualy I start the deployment by using "obant deployBPELServices", which fails. When I´m using "obant" directly from main/services/all it works flawless.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thnx in advance,
    Max

    Hi Clemens,
    Yes, the sample´s build.xml were my reference on how to set up this whole thing. I did it this the very same procedure for the last year with 26 BPEL-processes and yesterday just added a new process and this happend. Nevertheless, also if I remove the changes made to the main build.xml it doesn´t work (tested on 2 systems). Well at least, obviously this is my fault, not BPEL´s :) Whatever, I succeeed with the following:
    Instead of using
    <target name="deployBPELServices">
    <property name="deploy" id="deploy" value="testDomain"/>
    <ant dir="services/all" antfile="build.xml" target="all">
    <reference refid="deploy"/>
    </ant>
    </target>
    I´m now doing it this way:
    <target name="deployBPELServices">
    <property name="deploy" id="deploy" value="testDomain"/>
    <exec dir="services/all" executable="cmd">
    <arg line="/c ${ORABPEL}/bin/obant.bat -Ddeploy=${deploy}"/>
    </exec>
    </target>
    ${ORABPEL} points to my BPEL installation.
    Thnx anyway :)
    Greetings,
    Max

  • Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory

    I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
    These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right?  Seems like way too many files.
    Can I delete them?
    Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask?  Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
    So, can I delete these?

    I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
    Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Library directory (8.2 ini file/preferences)

    I would like to move the library folders, and I found in the help files the option to change the library directory, but it doesn't show up in the preferences window, and adding anything to labview.ini does nothing.  Is this a problem with the documentation? Or is it just poorly documented?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I think it was possible in 8.0 but I tried it and moved my user.lib...
    It sucked, scared a lot of LabVIEW tools software and I have turned it off. (So has done NI).

  • Why can't I see user /Library directory?

    I wanted to find the filename(s) for the Contacts file on my machine.  I wanted to save off the file, and then start pruning old contacts from it.  I wanted to save the actual file w/out having to rely on TImeMachine.
    I found from other searches that my Contacts list should be in a file called Metadata.  I found this folder (seems to contain each individual contact in a file).
    Get Info says the folder is in /users/<me>/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/.....
    However, when I look at Macintosh HD, there is a /Library directory at the root level, that doesn't have AddressBook under Application Support, but under name /Users/<me>/ , no Library directory is displayed.
    Is there an option I have to set somewhere to make the directory visible?  How do I do it?
    If not, why is it telling me the data is somewhere that doesn't seem to exist?
    Thanks,

  • Library-directory in application.xml

    Will WL pick up all the jars that are specified in the lib directory or the directroy specified in the library-directory element of application.xml ?
    Do the classes all HAVE to be jarred up ? Can I just put a classes directory under lib and get WL to pick it up from there ?
    thanks

    Hi,
    Until we don't try to change the *"library-directory"* through *"application.xml"* file...
    Then By Default An EAR application has *"<EAR_APP>\APP-INF\lib"* directory which is designed to place all the Jar files which we want to be shared by all the modules (war/ejbJar...etc) available inside that EAR Application.
    EAR application has *"<EAR_APP>\APP-INF\classes"* directory which is designed to place all the *.class files which we want to be shared by all the modules (war/ejbJar...etc) available inside that EAR Application.
    The "APP-INF\lib" directory cannot be used to share the *.class files. Similarly "APP-INF\classes" directory cannot be used to share the *.jar files.

  • Netbeans 6.9.1 & J2EE 6 & Shared Library Directory = Classpath errors

    Wohoo,
    starting as a forum newbie....again :s
    Anyway, I've run into some troubles during the setup of my very first J2EE 6 project in Netbeans. I've installed Netbeans 6.9.1 and the included Glassfish v3 server runtime. Then I've created a new J2EE 6 project using Netbeans J2EE project wizard. Said wizard has an option: "Use shared library directory". I ticked this option and specified the shared library directory to be "lib". Then I've added JAR files to it, but somehow this JARs are not added to the classpath of the dependent EJB and Web project. Any time I try to import a class from one of the EAR libraries I get the compile-time ClassNotFound error in the IDE.
    I'm a seasoned Eclipse user, and only recently have switched over to Netbeans (mostly out of curiosity). In Eclipse the ${EarProject}/lib folder was automatically recognized as the EAR's lib folder, and any JAR files added to it where available for all J2EE modules in the EAR project. After consulting the integrated Netbeans help on the topic I was convinced that this should work the same in Netbeans. Can any experienced Netbeans developer assist me in this please?
    PS: I'm sorry if this is the inappropriate forum category, but the old "Netbeans" category from the Sun Forums seems to have disappeared during the forum transition.
    EDIT: on an unrelated note I'd like to bring to your attention that this is the first "real Java question" in this forum :D ("Wohoo this is new" posts don't count)

  • Changing my iTunes library directory

    Hello. I am trying to move my existing music library to a network storage device to free up my computers hard drive. I have tried (without luck):-
    - copying my music files to the storage device and then setting my new folder as the iTunes music folder location
    - copying the existing iTunes library file to the device and setting it to target the new music files also on the device
    I have had no luck. iTunes always wants to refer to my hard drive for the library file, but will happily find and open the music files from the external storage device.
    Any help would be appreciated, I have run out of logical ideas and have thought about removing and reinstalling iTunes, but there must be an easier method to change my library directory.
    PLEASE HELP>
    Many thanks in advance.
    lewis shenton

    Lewis,
    First see this post: Buegie, "Moving Library to new Drive" #1, 02:56pm Oct 12, 2005 CDT
    It will move all the music files to any drive you want. Make sure that the drive is connected and available prior to opening iTunes to play music.
    Also remember to change the music folder location to that networked drive within your Preferences. If the networked drive is down when you open iTunes, it will revert to the default internal drive and change your Preferences automatically.
    iTunes always wants to keep the Library database file in the 'iTunes' folder on the main drive (usually under the '...\My Music\iTunes' folder). This can be changed only by using a special program to redirect the folders in XP.
    See: Buegie, "How do I control location of iTunes Music Library.xml" #2, 12:06am Oct 26, 2005 CDT

  • Library directory hidden?

    Hello,
    I've just realized, that Photoshop is saving configuration files in the Library directory (below user account level). In Finder I cannot see this directory and I even do not see those files, if I search for them with the Finder tool. Is this directory hidden? How can I have access to that?
    I just see a Library directory on the very top level and this does not seem to be the same?
    Thanks for feedback,

  • Where does "Library" directory location belong.

    Where does Library directory location belong.  Had to move things around and not sure it got back in the right place.. /Users/forister/Documents .. forister is the administrator and only user now after trying out profiles.
    Then I wanted to install something and it said to put it in this location, but it isn't working.  Did I screw it up?
    New Mac user.
    thanks.

    "~/Library" refers to a folder (directory) in your home folder, not in /System/ or elsewhere. (The tilde is UNIX shorthand for the current user's home folder.)
    You haven't said which version of OS X you are using but if it is Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or older, ~/Library should be visible in Finder views of your home folder (the one with the house icon). If you are using Lion, you won't see it there but you will see it from the "Go" menu if you hold down the option key when you click on that menu.
    Another way to get to the folder in Finder is to type Command + Shift + G, then type "~/Library/Services" (without the quotes) & press the Go button.
    As the Read Me for QuickFiles says, you may have to create the Services folder in ~/Library/ if it doesn't already exist. To do that, open ~/Library/ & type Command + Shift + N, then type "Services" to name the untitled folder, then press return.
