Library file permissions after update

I just updated to iTunes 8 and was having a problem with permissions for the library files. I was not listed as having access, and additionally is an account named "wheel" that I've never heard of that has access. The icon for this account shows the outline of two people.
I also noticed this issue with an album I recently transferred into iTunes that would not play after I deleted it and transferred it back in. I'm not really sure what's with this. Does anyone have any clues? I'm deleting this "wheel" account from access, but I'm hesitant to do that w/o knowing what it is. Please help. Thanks.

Also, there's another account for "system" that was set to "read & write", but none of my other files or folders have this on them.
Every other file/folder just has my account, "staff", and "everyone". Could someone also please direct me to more information about permissions and these various account? Thanks.

  • ITunes library file corrupt after updating?

Just the other day I updated to the latest iTunes software. This is the first time I've tried to use it and it keeps freezing (the swirly rainbow icon) until I eventually have to give up and force quit. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive which has admittedly been taking longer and longer to boot up each time I connect it, I don't know if this is related.
After doing some research on here I created a new test iTunes library on my hard drive and it worked perfectly, so it must be a corrupt library file? I followed the advice on an old thread and replaced the corrupt library file with an older one from December.
It worked....but here's the complication. Since that last backup in December I started using iTunes Match. When I opened the older library file, I saw that iTunes Match wasn't turned on, so I turned it on and it was saying that none of my library had been uploaded to iCloud except for iTunes purchases. I quickly exited, because frankly I couldn't bear the thought of all my library having to be uploaded to iCloud again (it took days and days...and days!). The music is still on the iCloud, but if I open that older version of my iTunes library it doesn't seem to think that it is.
Any idea what I should do?
    Thanks for your help

hmmmm. perhaps try running a chkdsk over the drive on which your iTunes library file is stored:

  • Keynote files deleting after update to 10.8.4

I performed a small edit to a Keynote file today after updating to 10.8.4 last night (used the combo updater).  The file crashed during a presentation and I though "no big deal, I'll just re-open it."  When I went to find it, it was completely gone.  Vanished.
I booted up Time Machine back at the office, restored the file, and chalked it up to some fluke.  Then I edited a different Keynote file.  It kept popping error messages about not being able to locate media files and I eventually closed it.  Again, I went to find the orginal file to re-open and it too has dissappeared.  This time, Time Machine wouldn't even let me restore it from a backup.
I ran disk utility and it found minor errors in the volume bitmap and free space remaining.  So I booted to the recorvery partition and repaired successfully.
I'm up and running again, but my Keynote file is still missing.  I'm afraid to open Keynote again for fear of this happening again.
Is there any known issue with 10.8.4 corrupting the file system, particulary when opening and editing Keynote files?
(15 " Retina MBP, latest model with 768 GB)

    GordonGecko9:
    - First, make sure you back up all remaining Keynote presentations. Hopefully, you have a backup of the one that got deleted.  I had to get a copy from another folder. Once the file was deleted, Time Machine suddenly thought it was never there in the first place too.  That's right, the deleted file was also deleted from Time Machine--even months back.
    - Once you have backups of your files, run Disk Utility and see if there are any errors.  I had a few, so booted into the Recovery partition and repaired.
    - Remove all your Keynote .plist files from the directory: /Users/your username/Library/Preferences.  Your Library folder will be hidden unless you hold the OPTION key and then select the GO menu at the top.  You can just move these files out of that folder and keep them elsewhere if you want them again.
    - Check your console log to see if any errors were reported about the time of the crash.  I had some message about Flip4Mac confilciting with another video codec, so I deleted Flip4Mac.  Not sure if it mattered, but I didnt' really need it anyway.
    - Since you have backups of your files now, you can start playing around with Keynote again to see if your problem is solved.  Here is what I found:
    > After deleting the .plist files, I sill had issues after editing presenations.  The changes would take, but then when I went to save the file, I got an error message that the location couldn't be found.  When I chose "Save As" isntead, Keynote crashed.  However, when I rellaunced Keyonte, the file was saved in its orginal location. (Before I deleted the .plist files, the presenation was gone after Keynote crashed).
    > Subsequent edits and saves worked normally on the same file.  As I opened other presenations from the same folder in the finder, I got the same errors (crashing and file not saving).  But then, upon relaunch everything seemed fine.
It seems that something with 10.8.4 is causing directory errors with Keynote files.  When you go to save an edited presenation, it gets confused about where to put it and the file gets deleted instead.
Please keep me posted on if the above "fix" works for you and if you notice anything else.

  • HT1198 Shared iPhoto library file permissions are corrupted.

I am using the alternative option mentioned in the technote.  The iPhoto library is located in /Users/Shared.
When my wife adds photos to iPhoto from her account, the files have a permission set of 640 (rw-------) on the file system.
When I add photos from my account, the files have a 666 (rw-rw-rw-) permission set.
I found that by using the iPhoto 'Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions' process it fixes the issue..although I'd really like to find the main cause of her files have a 640 permission set.

It may be too early to be confident, however I changed the permissions as follows: Note: the iPhoto Libray resides on iMac A.
    old
iMac A: Users/Shared/Pictures  me: Read & Write, staff: Read Only, everyone: no access
    new
iMac A: Users/Shared/Pictures  me: Read & Write, staff: Read & Write, everyone: Read & Write
    I have successfully:
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account, then
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my account, then
iMac B: Opened the iPhoto Library under my account on another Mac on our network and made library modifications, then
iMac A: Opened the iPhoto Library under my wife's account.
In each case, iPhoto did not go into "examining the Library, nor did it need to repair permissions". The Library and iPhoto closed promptly without errors or inconsistencies.
I will keep my fingers crossed since it is hard to confidently trouble shoot without a higher level of understanding of Unix permissions and the details of the iPhoto Library.

  • After clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.5 no Gate Keeper and a ton a long list of differences in verify disk permissions after updating to Itunes 12.1

    HI everybody.
    I have a MacBopok Prop 15" from mid 2012, 2.6Ghz, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM 1 TB SSD.
As my Mac was running as fast as possible it  was getting slower down during start and shutdown, from 2 secopnds to 15 secconds during start and shutdown . Apps were crashing sometimes a freeze, total crash which made me go directly to Recovery HD and not my log in page after all the tricks I know I took it to service center where they zeroed my SSD HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Strangly enough Gate keeper was not in my preferences and a old version of Itunes 10.4 if I recall. The Mac is still slow while I reinstall all apps from App store and one for one documents and folders from my latest TM back up.
Updated the Security update, and other updates had the same problem as many updating Iphoto 9.4.3 error 102, still have not been able.
But running verify disk permissions there is a massive list of Itunes differences while I have not  even added one song. At least 60 to 70 differences. I know a lot of these differences are nothing to worry about but a clean install without Gate keeper and an old Itunes which after update to 12.1 has so many disk differences, this can not as it should be also as I have not added anything from my Itunes library. Any feedback or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Greetings
    Matt

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • Am I the only one getting calls from 253-802-0308 about malicious file downloads after updating FIREFOX?

After updating Firefox I start getting calls from 253-802-0308 (International Telcom in Auburn Washington, found using 411.com). The report that they are getting messages that my Windows PC is reporting the downloading of malicious files. I don't think that there is a connection with Mozilla but it only started after I ran the last 2 or 3 updates to Firefox. Searches on Google and other search engines don't show logical connections to the phone calls and the problem being reported to me. None of my anti-virus programs, Ccleaner, DEFENDER & AVG pickup and malicious files. I'm curious about who they may be because when I question them during the calls they end up hanging up on me. Just wondering if similar problems are being reported.

That is a reported scammer set-up. Read some of the following from actual phone customers. It is not related to your Firefox updates. I have gotten a few of these types of calls on my '''''unlisted '''''home phone number over the past several years. They use a dialer, usually automatic and sequential number dialing. Get a loud whistle to blow into the phone mouth piece or one of those loud air horns from the hardware/sporting good store; this kind of trash deserves broken ear drums.

  • Media files hidden after update 10.6.8 to Mavericks.

    Hello world,
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an iMac 21.5" from 2010: 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB DDR3, 500GB.
My problem came about when I updated from 10.6.8 to Mavericks. I downloaded Mavericks from the app store. When I tried to install it, it wouldn't let me because it said my internal HD was being used for Time Machine (even though I had Time Machine switched off). So I plugged in my WD USB 3.0 external drive and installed it with that. After the update, it had me create a new default user account, which I did. But now all my media files are hidden and I can't open my media folders on my Macintosh HD. I used Disk Utility to verify and repair disk on my WD external and on the iMac's HD.
Question is, where did all my files go? I believe they're still on my HD, I just can't access them? I was under the impression that after updating to Mavericks that I could just use my old login and all my files would be there, but they aren't. I'm seeing some symbols on my folders, which I can change to have permission to open them, but the files still aren't there.
I also tried the dummy account trick, but to no avail. I could have made a mistake in trying that one though.
Any help for me to see my hidden media files would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Itunes library has disappeared after update.

    Hi all,
I have just updated my itunes to the new 11.1.5 version and it has lost all my playlists and library bar a few albums I have purchased on the store! I'm distraught.
My iTunes library is in a folder on my desktop. My last 'Previous itunes library' was from Oct last year so I'm really hoping someone has a better suggestion than just using that file.
All my music is still within the itunes>music folder.
    Why? Why? Why?
Could I delete itunes and download an older version hoping it just falls back in line?
I run my library by 'date added' so it's imperrative I fix this and don't just re-upload all the music.
    Someone please help!!!!

Putting on an older version of iTunes won't help and is a very involved process.
I think "date added" is uniquely stored in the library.itl version of the library file.  If you don't have that file then date added is lost back to your most recent version of that file.
I haven't updated iTunes since 2007 so I am not familir with what it does when updating but I thought it would create a new version of the library file and put the old version in your previous libraries folder.  It apparently hasn't so unless you have a backup copy somewhere you will have to go back to an earlier version of the file and add anything put into the library since then as brand new items.
Tip: Always back up your computer before doing software updates.  This shouldn't have happened but each computer is unique and yours is one of the few on which it has.  With a backup you'd be able to restore the old version in minutes and ready to have another go.

  • My iTunes library has disappeared after updating, how do I get it back?

Upon opening iTunes it pops up with "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file..."
I've saved my iTunes library on an external hard drive and have been accessing it fine until recently. Now when I open it it pops up with that and when I open itunes all my music is gone.
    How do i fix this?

    1) You're missing all the Photoshop updates
    2) You're missing required plugins - all of them.
Looks like something went wrong with your install -- uninstall, then reinstall and make sure you get all the updates.

  • ITunes Library in disarray after update!

Okay, so I've noticed that while more than a few of us are having problems with iTunes after the new OS/iTunes updates, no one has really been having my issue. It seems that my iTunes library across the board (Music, Movies, TV shows, etc.) has lost all the content that isn't iTunes store content. All my playlists are gone as well.
What does show up in my library are all my itunes store purchases, however they don't seem to recognize that all this content is on my hard drive since the icloud button is beside each song/episode/movie.
Going to my iTunes music folder shows me that all my content (even the stuff that's supposedly missing within iTunes) is still there so why does iTunes keep ignoring all the content in that folder? Why are the tv shows and movies still on my HD reading like they're just in icloud? Why the heck are the songs I ripped from CDs not showing in my Library? Where did my playlists go? Is anyone else having this issue?

Davis, I really appreciate the quick response to my problem.
Unfortunately neither of the links provided addressed my issue. I just had to suck it up and re-add everything to my Library, which was still a pain but not overly difficult seeing as all my content was still in my iTunes Music folder.
I did have to spend an hour or so re-naming and sorting files that weren't from the iTunes Store which got annoying pretty fast. Luckily iTunes Match stored my playlists so once I got everything in my Library squared away I turned on Match and playlists came back.
I still have no idea why updating Mavericks/iTunes made such a huge mess of my media files this time around. Nothing like this has ever happened to my iTunes content before.
