  • IPhoto library Gone! (replaced in just one click w/o ever dragging 2 Trash)

iPhoto library gone / replaced in just one click (w/ o ever dragging anything to the trash)!
I currently own multiple PowerMacs all sharing the same high speed local network. All of them run the latest / Mac OS X.4.9 and have multiple HD’s (both internal and external) as well as iLife’ 06. And all of them also have iChatAV3 and are able to video chat one with the other at will while on the same local high speed network.
This is my very first iPhoto library nightmare since I’ve owned a mac. and yes I’ve always been conditioned to backup everything one wishes to keep. This particular scenario is no different. (altho my back up HD for one of the three G4 computers involved was a bit dated by at least 6 months).
This was essentially triggered via two separate iLife ‘06 apps , namely iPhoto and iChatAV3 (combined with at least an ounce of stupidity on my part). That combined with 2 people not communicating properly / being on the same page (or rather the same Folder) when working on the very same task. Hey... I do NOT claim to be an expert at this particular application even though I have used macs since apple first introduced the Apple IIe decades ago. So this does not stem from lack of experience but rather not thinking things thru entirely in terms of all the possible consequences of simple, yet catastrophic actions when it comes to replacing or authenticating one particular folder containing the entire iPhoto Library simply titled “pictures”.
Starts like this, ichatav is open on 2 of three macs and my teenage daughter asks me to send her a roll of pictures she downloaded into my computer (since it’s twice as fast as her own) from her digital still camera. Now she wants all 12 photos on her computer as well. So I drag all 12 photos to my desktop and place them in a folder titled “Jackies pics”. I drag this folder to her icon on my buddy list and ichat AV simply refuses to allow sending the entire folder and ask me to send them one at a time. That should have been my first clue. Strange I thought. Always worked well in the past. Why not now? So I tell her over ichatav that the app simply won’t allow me to send her the entire folder and that I’ll have to send them one at a time. Please make a new folder on your HD called Jackie’s pics. She agrees and creates a folder on her end called .... (you guessed it) ...... “pictures”...... to which she drags each of the 12 images I sent over our local network.
Little did she realize this newly created folder has the makings of an atomic bomb when it comes to importing the entire folder into iPhoto’s library on her own mac. A dialog box quickly materializes asking that she “authenticate” or hit cancel. So she ask me what to do. I said that’s fine, hit authenticate (assuming she titled it Jackies pics). BIG mistake! She hits authenticate and now she has the 12 images I sent her in iPhoto....BUT .... the 1600 or so originals in the entire iPhoto library quickly vanishes. Her entire iphoto library is now wiped out or rather replaced with this new folder. She asks me, what happened? And in less than 30 seconds she in complete tears. Over 2-3 years of her photos (all 1600 images) gone in the click of a mouse.
Today is father’s day .... and I remembered that I have a complete backup of her HD (even though it is a bit dated). So together, we managed to recover about 90% of the lost images. If anyone reading this knows how I can possibly recover the final 10% (most current photos) then please help us.
Bottom line: We were fortunate. This Father’s Day iPhoto Nightmare ended happily....
    TIA
    (3) G4 PM's/(3) S-Drives/Sony TRV900/Nikons/6FWHD's/PS7/iLife06/FCPHD/DVDSP/etc. Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Just another update .... Today, my daughter was multitasking on her G4 powermac working within iPhoto as well as email account and last but not least the latest iTunes. As she opened this final app (and I mean "final").... her entire hard drive bit the dust after she saw the spinning beachball and hence attempted to force quit. (I should also point out we are having a heat wave in San Diego today ...which also may have contributed to this hardware issue mainly).
This time, I had a complete updated copy of her HD and simply cloned it to a new hard drive. Took me a few hours to troubleshoot, clone and install a new drive in its place. But all is working normally again (sure hope it stays that way this time).
Friendly reminder to those who read this post .....
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP .... ESPECIALLY IN IPHOTO & ITUNES!

For iTunes purchases, see this Apple support document for information on how to redownload it at no cost.

For content imported outside of iTunes, you'll need to re-import it if it's no longer on your computer's HD anywhere.

  • Is the User library gone with the release of Lion?

Is the User library gone with the release of Lion?
Used to have ~/Library and Mac HD/Library.

It's still there, just invisible.  You can find it by holding down option and clicking the Go menu in the Finder (a Library item will appear that goes to your user Library folder).  Or you can run the following command in the Terminal to turn it visible again:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
The Library folder at the root level of your hard drive should still be there and visible.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try connecting phone in mass storage mode and select show all files, look in 'private on E and delete the files listed, has worked for me in the past !
Storage Drives: (Mass storage E, Memory Card F)
    \private\101ffca9\harvesterdbvx_x.dat
    \private\10281e17\[string]mpxvx_x.db
    \private\10281e17\[string]pcvx_x.db
TIP: Connect the device in USB mass storage mode (File Transfer), to locate the private folder from the PC.
TIP: STRING and x_x will change depending on your phone.
After you've done this, then you should be able to re-scan and re-create the Music Library.

  • Library gone. HELP

    Hello
So i used to have an old imac g5 and i backed up the iphone library i had on that imac. Since then i purchased a new imac and started adding pictures to iphoto over time. Today i decided to add all the photos from the old library that i had backed up. I dragged the backed up iphoto library folder into the iphoto icon and it imported all the pictures, however all the new pictures are gone!!
Where are these? my intent was just to copy the old photos into my new iphoto library.
    help!

    1. Never import one Library into another. If you do all you will get is massive duplication, lose all your albums, events, keywords etc.
I dragged the backed up iphoto library folder into the iphoto icon and it imported all the pictures,
I suspect it didn't import anything, What is has done is open the back up Library. That's why you can't see the newer photos. There in another Library.
Try use iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries.
    Regards

  • Entire Library gone after Keychain reset

I'm not exactly sure what happened here. I don't know what a keychain is but I think I may have inadvertently done something to reset it. I lost a lot of saved programs and my entire iTunes library (songs I paid for!) are all now gone. What did i do and how do I get my songs back?

    Thanks for your reply Terence.
I couldn't get the Java chat in Facebook to work, so I figured I would update Java and my Safari to the latest versions. So I used Software Update and installed ONLY those two items.
I restarted and and it didn't help the chat issue, so I figured it was somekind of interuption in service at Facebook and moved on to do some photo editing in iPhoto almost immediately. It just says there are no Photos when I opened it.
I checked the package contents of my library, and all the photos are still there.
My Pictures folder has an alias that points to an external FireWird Hard drive for the Library because it's too big for my MacBook's HD. Same goes for my other iLife Apps. They all have aliases pointing to the external drive.
I decided to install Leopard on another volume and see what would happen.
I used the option to import my account from the newly updated boot volume to the reverted boot volume.
Sure enough all my photos were back, when booting to the boot volume that has the reverted Safari and Java.
Since then I have tried to delete the preferences for iPhoto, update iPhoto, update iLife Support, update Leopard to 10.5.8. Nothing corrects this problem.
Obviously neither the alias or the Library are corrupted because they both work fine when my account is imported to a system with the older software suite.
Having worked for Apple's own IT department, and owned dozens of models for decades, I have encountered stuff like this before many times, and yes it would not surprise me at all that someone has dropped a ball of some kind. As a loyal user of their products, you better believe I hold them to a higher standard than Windows, and I will absolutely make a stink about something as unacceptable as a whole library disappearing.
My data is all backed up, but I can just imaging someone who doesn't having this happen to them and causing a heart attack.

  • Iphoto library gone on my side

My wife and I each have an account on my 1.8 duel G5. When I opened my iphoto 6 tonight my library was completely gone. All my photo books and every roll. Our iphoto folder lives in our shared file. When I go to my wife's side, she still has everthing as it was.
I may have jumped the gun and re-imported my iphoto folder which left me with a big messy 4000 photo library with doubles and out of any kind of chronological order. Completely useless.
How do I get rid of this mess and get my wife's library back to my side?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Hugh

    Hi Hugh,
It seems you have run into the "permissions changing on the library" problem.
I would take look at iPhoto Library Manager and read the documentation page on sharing libraries to see it explained.
There is also another method in Tiger for sharing one library.
(you can go back to sharing the shared library by using one of the next methods and just delete the iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder that is the messed up import)
SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • User/Library Gone After Software Downloaded

Back in May 2012 before I upgraded to Lion, I downloaded this software called ViewOne onto my computer. It is a Java based software to use with Java. Well, apparently it corrupted something on my HD because starting in June 2012 I had no User/Library. The ViewOne software was supposed to be installed in the User/Library folder and was not. Instead it replaced the User/Library folder. Very odd. At least that is what I see occurred through viewing the Time Machine.
I only discovered a problem when I wanted to save my MacJournal files to a CD. The only way I could find the MacJournal files was to go into the preferences for that software and tell it to find the files. When I searched my HD for the User/Library I found it was gone.
Can I restore only the User/Library from Time Machine?
I have saved those MacJournal files onto a CD.
    Found the answer.

Found the answer to my question.

  • Where has my iPhoto library gone?

I have downloaded the update for iphoto 11. When I opened the app, I found that ALL of my photo's had gone Where are they likely to be? Can I get them back? I hope so, because I don't have them backed up (very stupid of me)
I have read and tried some of the various solutions, but so far, nothing has worked. It was suggested that I update my library, but I don't know how to do this.
I think I've messed up somewhere, because now when I open iphoto it says:
To use iphoto ’11, you need to upgrade your photo library.
The upgrade might take several minutes, depending on the number of photos in your library
It then gives you an option to quit or continue. I select continue and then it says:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto.
Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
I select quit and then nothing.
    Help!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto library gone

I tried to post this under iPhoto topic, but the web site kept giving an error message so I am posting it here. I recently purchased a Canon dig camera and loaded the software to download pics. In the Image browser (of the software) there is a topic box with a Pictures folder and Movie folder. In the pictures folder there was an icon for all my iPhoto library pics and also desktop pics etc. I thought that these were probably aliases and since I was not in any of my HD folders (just in the Canon software program) etc I deleted them from the Canon software windows. (I did not want duplicates of all iPhoto pics etc.) Now I cannot find my iPhoto library even after doing a "find" and all my pics are gone. I couldn't believe that they could be deleted from a third party software program since I was not even in any of my libraries or HD, desktop folders. So it looks like I deleted all my pics (still don't understand it). Am I just not looking in the right spot for the missing folder? Sorry for the stupidity.
    Glen

"the web site kept giving an error message"
What did the message state? Which iPhoto forum. There are several? Please report error along w/the above requested info over on the Feedback about Discussions Forums so that it can be taken care of.
For the record, I had no problem getting into any of the iPhoto forums.

  • Photo library gone during copying the file...

I bought a new Mac and wanted to import the library into my new computer. So I started to copy the file onto my external hard drive wth the idea to connect that drive to my new computer and use if from there to imported into my new iPhoto 11.
However, the copying was going to take 256 hours accoring to my G5 because the file was 25 GB big, so I cannceled it to try something else. After canceling, the copied file showed a size of 500 mb and the original file was gone! I checked everywhere, but it seems that I lost my comlete iphoto library. This is rerrible, how can a file dissapear only because I canncels a copy, (not a cut and past).
    Does someone has suggestions?
    André

How did you go about trying to copy the library from the G5 to the EHD? Did you just click and drag it to the EHD?
Or did you use the Move method? That is hold down the Command+Shift key and drag the file from the G5 to the EHD. This method copies the file to the destination and delete it from the source when the copy is done. If you did use the move method and cancelled the "move" when you did it might have deleted the source file and left you with just the partial file on the EHD. The "move" feature was an issue a while back as I recall.

  • Photo library gone!

I had lots of albums in my iphoto library yesterday.  I just went to download some more photos and all of my albums are gone.  The only thing in my library are the photos that I have just downloaded, can anyone help?

Open the library with the Finder
and check inside the Masters (iPHoto 11) or Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) to see if your photo files are in the subfolders.  DO NOT DO ANYTHING BUT LOOK !
If they are there make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Library Gone After Updating to LR 1.2

I'm just starting with this product. Had images in a version 1.1 Library. Got prompted as to availability of version 1.2 for download and did so. To experiment and learn a bit more, I imported one RAW file from my hard drive. Now it's the only image in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen. My former Library of images is gone.
A little more info: I don't keep my images in the default Documents and Settings\My Photos (or whatever it is). In my C:\ drive I have created a folder/directory called Photos. All of my image files reside there and in various sub-folders therein.
But, how can I find my old Library, which I understand is essentially a database holding information and settings for the images in the Library, not the actual images themselves? Thanks.
    Kurt

Thanks, but I did that before posting my message and it only came up with the new one I referred to ... with the single image I imported in version 1.2. And it is located in the My Documents and Settings\My Photos. I could've put the Library from 1.1 there though.
I started with version 1.0 (not the Beta version) and I don't think the term "Catalog" was used then. Was there another extension for files containing the Library back in version 1.0?
Or I wonder if somehow I am inadvertently reduced the view down to one image. I don't have any star or color filters invoked.

  • Whole library gone, again and again

    Hi everybody,
I've a problem with my itunes since a few days ago. When I start itunes, my whole library is gone. I can't find my old library in the itunes-file or music-file. The first time I just went adding all my songs back. My ipod had to 'start over' as well.
But when I shut down my computer and start the next day, the library is gone again! It's really frustrating me.. and haven't found an answer on the internet yet.
Has anyone an idea what the problem is and how it can be solved?
It's really unexpected, because I have not installed new programmes/updates on my computer or something.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to AD!
Vaio users worldwide have been seeing this problem. Some Sony software causes a conflict with iTunes. You need to set the Sony Content Folder Watcher to leave the iTunes folder alone.
Looks like Sony may have put out an update for that in Asia:
    http://www.sony-asia.com/support/faq/300917/productcategory/itpersonalcomputer
Contact Sony to see if they have an update for your model, or configure its software to leave itunes alone.
There is a way to configure the sony software - I don't have a Vaio, but this older topic has directions
