LIBRARY MERGING TO EXTERNAL HDD

Hi
I have an iPhoto library of some 340 GB on a MacBook Pro 500 GB.  I use iPhotos as when I first got the Mac I knew nothing about the apps and this was default.  I have it backed up well.  I recently purchgased aperture app.  I want to move the library from iPhotos to Aperture and onto an external HDD not on my MBP.  The photos are show RAW and I need to keep them in TIF.  I have had help on importing them from the card but I now need to sort out my historic mess!
Can anyone tell me how to do this, please in absolutly basic steps!
Many thanks
Jules

From what you say it doesn't matter about the library as it is the same files in Iphoto and Aperture, just what I can do to them changes?
Yes.  Details regarding the differences are at the following two links.  It is worth reading through them, particularly before you go any further:

Many do (myself included) but you will find that you can do _a lot_ of what you currently do in PSCS5 in Aperture, with many important benefits -- primary among them Aperture's non-destructive workflow, and its enormously more efficient storage (more on that in a minute).  In Aperture, you will want to set you External Editor to PSCS5.  When you want to edit an Image that is in Aperture in PS, you select "Edit with Photoshop" and Aperture will create a duplicate of the currently selected Version and open it in PS.  After you are finished, close the file in PS, and your changes will show for the Image in Aperture.
If you are unfamiliar with Aperture's terms, you should carefully read the first seven chapters of the User Manual -- they provide a guide to the interface elements, and a sturdy foundation on which to rest your picture collection.  Here is a concise guide I wrote.

My end state is to have my photo files in tiff on the most robust storage possible (on a minimum of two external HDDs) with my MBP free for the next shoots!
And here is where you come to the first and perhaps highest of the conceptual hurdles you must clear to take advantage of the novel but excellent system around which Aperture is designed.  Using Aperture entails making a shift -- continental, if not tectonic, imho -- from conceiving of the task of software as being file-management to being image-management.  The importance cannot be overstated.  I touch on it in my concise guide.  Here I'll mention just two things I think you'll find helpful:
- In Aperture, your Image is not a file.  It is created on-the-fly from two files: the digital camera file you imported (once imported, called an Original in Aperture-speak), and a text file of instructions detailing changes to make to your Image (Adjustments in Aperture-speak) and changes to the Image's metadata.  When you close Aperture, your Images do not exist.
- Aperture is then best thought of as storing your original digital camera files, and information on how to make new, share-able, image-format files when you need them.  You don't make them until you need them, and you don't store them in Aperture.  You can always make them again.  When you need a TIFF for sending for printing, you make it and send it on.  There is no reason to save this file anywhere on your system.

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • My Macbook Pro 2014 ran out of battery while mid-slideshow. Now the slideshow won't skip through photos and I can't figure out why? Macbook Pro 2014 13-inch Intel i5 8GB RAM 128GB flash, iPhoto library is on external HDD

    Macbook Pro 2014
    13-inch
    Intel i5
    8GB RAM
    128GB flash SSD,
    Integrated Graphics
iPhoto library is on external HDD
I was in a slideshow, with around 1,911 photos in it. About halfway through, my Macbook ran out of battery. Now when I restarted and charged the Macbook and reopened iPhoto, the slideshow won't advance through photos, and I can't figure out any reason why it would do this.
I thought it may be corrupted, so I deleted and reinstalled iPhoto library, iPhoto itself, and disconnected and reconnected my external HDD.
This didn't work, the photos still won't advance.
I don't know any reason why this would be happening, and there is ample space on my internal drive.
I'm happy to provide more information if needed!
    Many Thanks,
    James

Make a few tests, James, to narrow down the problem and find out, if the slideshow is corrupted, your iPhoto Library, or settings in your account.
To test, if only your slideshow has a problem, create a new slideshow, just for testing. Just use "File > New Slideshow" and add a few photos. Does this slideshow play correctly?
If the test slideshow does not play either, create a new iPhoto Library. Use the File menu in iPhoto: File > Switch to library > Create New. Import a few photos and create a slideshow.  Does it play?
If even a new library does not solve the problem, test in a different user account (see this document:  Isolating an issue by using another user account - Apple Support):
This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences.
Use these instructions for OS X Mavericks.
See these instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.
See this video, or these instructions for OS X Lion.
Optional: If you have any specific files you wish to test with, copy (don't move) those items to the /Users/Shared folder in the Finder.
Log out of your current user account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in with the new account you created.
Attempt to reproduce the issue you were seeing in your regular user account.
After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in as your regular account.
After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may want to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.
Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
If you should find, that slideshows only play in a new user account, post back.

  • If i move my iPhoto library to an external hdd, will Time Machine backup these photos as well?

I've moved my iPhoto library to an external HDD, I was wondering if now it has been moved outside of my iMac whether Timemachine will still back up my photos, or do I have to change any timemachine preferences to accomodate such a change, any responses will be welcomed-thankyou!

Thanks, Linc, you are the greatest!
So I moved my iTunes library to my external disk.  When I checked Time Machine's Excluded list it was not there.  Then I entered TM and saw that the library had been backed up from the external disk.  So all is well and apparently the OS guys stopped adding external drives to the Excluded list.

  • Can I store the apps in my iTunes library on an external hdd but keep my music on my mac

can I store the apps in my iTunes library on an external hdd but keep my music on my mac?
    thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • ITunes Library: Keep 2 external HDDs in sync with same music files

I am trying to run iTunes with 2 external HDDs, keeping in sync with each other. One large one for my desktop and a second portable one to take away from home when I need to travel. What is the best way to do this?
What I have done so far is changing the location of my media library via iTunes advanced preferences to the other ext HDD and then consolidating my library, but I noticed that it tries to re-copy the entire library or at least part of it so I end up with music files like:
    Back in Black.mp3
    Back in Black 1.mp3
I'm sure this has been thought of before and an obvious solution should be available, but I've never been able to find one, so I'd be really glad if someone could tell me how to do this!

  • Trying to setup a Belkin N750 between Mac & Win 7 to share Itunes Library on an external HDD

    Hello all,
Please excuse my complicated question. I really cannot fathom out how to resolve this technological nightmare. I have a 50gb Itunes Library stored on an External HDD in MAC format (HFS+) I want to share this library with the Windows 7 Laptop, i have enable home sharing on both computers. Sadly the Windows laptop cannot see the itunes library.
I have a Belkin N750 wireless router which has a USB port and LAN connections on the back. I bought this on the understanding i could plug my HDD into the router and it could then be accessed by both Mac and P.C. Annoyingly the HDD cannot be seen by either laptop! I am assuming this is because of the file format??
Does anyone know of any way i can share my HDD to both Mac and P.C so the Itunes library can be shared and playlists can be made by each user?
    Thanks in advance
Any ideas are welcome as it would stop me throwing the whole lot into the garden and going back to Vinyl and tape decks!
    Ian
P.S: I also have access to my music library via iCloud, i have logged into iCloud on the windows laptop and the Itunes library can be seen but cannot be edited (Playlists added or deleted)
P.P.S: HDD has just died so i have the oppurtunity to buy a new HDD so can format it before adding Itunes Library back to the drive. (Just had to pay to get data back off dead HDD which will come back on DVD's so the assumption is to copy data onto new drive)
Again, thank you for reading and i hope someone has any bright ideas to help me.

    Hello,
The iTunes library is installed and added to my Mac with no issues. I just want to share the whole library with a Windows laptop.
As mentioned the 'Enable home sharing' does not seem to work. I am assuming it is the file format of the HDD which means the home sharing cannot be done on a Mac?
    Thanks

  • ITunes Library access via external HDD w/ AirPort Extreme

Ok wizards...  I've read a number of posts, but can't seem to pull together the answer to my question and hoping someone's able to push me in the right direction.
I've got a Windows 7 PC with my iTunes library stored on an external HDD due to it's size.  My PC is often not at home (i travel for work a lot) and would like to have my library available to my family via my Apple TV when i'm not there.  So... I'm contemplating buying an AirPort Extreme and connecting the HDD.  I have read that the HDD must be formatted to FAT32 for it to function w/ the AirPort extreme (seemingly an arduous step, but surmountable) but can't seem to find a clear answer to the question:
Will I be able to access my Library via the Apple TV via this method?  Obviously any tips / tricks would be greatly appreciated and thanks (in advance) for anyone who can help!

No, at least not directly. You would still need an iTunes "server" to stream the iTunes media to the Apple TV. Typically a iTunes server would be a Mac or PC computer running iTunes.

  • Want to move my library to an external HDD

    Hello all,
Due to space constraints I need to move my iTunes library to a new HDD. What is the "proper" way to do that without losing any settings or data ?
    Thanks !

    Connect your ext disk
In iTunes Preferences point the location where to store file to that external disk
Now "Consolidate Library" and get a coffee or two - all files will be copied to that ext disk
If everything went fine - check that twice - purge those files on your int disk

  • HELP! Library on my External HDD shows up and doesn't show up on another

So I've been working on this project last night (from my external hdd), and completed it halfway before calling it a night.  I just close the laptop and let it sleep.  Now, I'm trying to open my project I don't see my external's library, which is normal sometimes, so I click my "Open library" and select my external hard drive's library.  I get the usual loading bar at the top of the screen, but when it finishes loading, nothing appears!  So I click "Open library" and select my external library again, then I get this message:
I have the latest FCPX 10.1.1 and my project library has already been updated.  The part that I don't understand is that, I also have another external hdd that I use, but it opens the library on that external hard drive just fine.  Is there some sort of preference file I should delete to fix this?? Your help is appreciated!!

@ Tom - I changed everything to Read/write, but still nothing.  So I made a new user and it appeared! But my project folder was empty and the event, for which the project I was working on (titled "Jordan & Kaley Wedding"), was empty as well.  Like this:
It shows that I have no projects in my project folder, but it opened with one of my projects that I had worked on previously on my external, so I don't understand how its working.

  • Aperture - library management and external HDD question

    Hi all.
I have just graduated from a point and shoot to a Panasonic GH2 (love it), and have now begun using Aperture 3 rather than iPhoto on my early 2008 MB Pro to manage my photos going forwards.  Of course, I’ve now discovered that Aperture is quite the resource hog and so it’s upgrade time (darn, “have” to buy a new ‘puter!).  I have a 2011 MB Pro (2.3Ghz i7 with 512GB SSD) on order and 8GB of DDR 3 arriving from Crucial.  Since I have this brand-new-computer opportunity I want to make sure I’m organising things properly before I start transferring things across, and so have a few Aperture-related questions.  (In case it’s relevant, I’m shooting in RAW+JPEG.  So far I’ve been using RAW as master, but have since learnt it might be a good idea to import JPG as master and switch to RAW only when I need to make corrections, so I’ll probably do that going forwards.)
I understand that moving to referenced masters on an external drive might be a good idea and save me precious SSD-space.  To that end, questions are:
    1. Can anyone recommend a companion external HDD for Aperture and the 2011 MBPro?  I guess either FW800 or Thunderbolt are the way to go.  The Lacie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt might be an option but is this overkill for Aperture masters or would FW800 be sufficient.  I’ve also seen the G-Tech G-RAID mini, Lacie Rugged – thoughts welcome.
Key requirements are a) as compact as possible, and b) bus powered.
    2. What kind of performance can I expect if I go down this route?  Is there going to be significant loading/processing delay whenever I switch to a new image?
    3. How will Aperture cope with (eg) syncing photos to iPad / iPhone if the drive containing the masters isn’t connected?  Put another way, are JPG renders saved in the Aperture library (i.e. on my MBP SSD) or with the masters?
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

OWC (an excellent vendor) has the Elite Pro Mini hard drive that meets your specs:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/EliteALmini/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Thiunderbolt drives are not mainstream yet but eSATA and FW800 both work well. The multiple connection methods of OWC drives allow very desirable flexibility when purposing/repurposing drives.
Note too that the MBP optical drive can be replaced with up to a 1-TB hard drive DIY or OWC will do it for you. That is what I am doing with my 17" 2011 MBP.
    2. Is there going to be significant loading/processing delay whenever I switch to a new image?
SSD latency is orders of magnitude less than hard drives. Switching to a new image even fast hard drives with fast connectivity add significant latency delay. To avoid that what I do is leave (Referenced) Masters on the SSD until all editing is complete (which may be a few weeks). Only then do I use Aperture to change the Referenced Masters location from the SSD to a large external drive.
What kind of performance can I expect if I go down this route?
With Masters on the SSD and 8 GB RAM imports/exports are very fast and all Aperture editing is essentially instant. You will be pleased!
Suggested workflow steps for Referenced Masters:
    • Use a FW card reader or MBP slot to copy to a file folder on the SSD (never directly into Aperture or any other images management app). With fast camera cards copy times are quick, but cheap slow cards can slow this step down a lot.
    • Eject and physically disconnect the card reader.
    • Back up that file folder on external drive(s).
    • Only after backup is complete, reformat the camera card in-camera.
    • Import images into Aperture from the file folder on the SSD.

  • How do i move some of the folders in iphoto library ( to an external HDD) without actually having to move the whole library and without affecting the albums i have already created in iPhoto.????

I have been storing my photos separately in folder and importing it in iphoto without actually copying them. Now to free some space in my hdd i want to move some of those folders to an external hdd. How do i do that without affecting my iphoto albums. ????

Well, strictly speaking, you can do this. Two ways. One is tricky:
How are you at editing SQL databases?
    This user found a way:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3216539?tstart=30
But tread very carefully - get it wrong and you'll hose everything. Make a back up first.
    The other is expensive:
Purchase Aperture, and if you have the latest versions of both these apps, then you can open the Library with Aperture, and use the relocate Masters command.
Or, in the end, make a managed Library. A Referenced Library is more work for zero gain.
