Library naming and sorting strategy

Hi all
I am new to Aperture and before I start importing all my pics I am trying to determine my filing strategy. Basically my pictures consists of Holiday Snaps and hobby Portfolio type pics.
I am thinking of creating two libraries. One Snaps and One Portfolio. Then categorising by dates then events within each.
I would be interested in hearing how you guys are organising your pictures so that I can finalise my method.
Thanks Carlo

will help you think through determining your filing strategy. Many things work. Try to define your needs. Make practice Libraries (a few Projects with photos) and use them to test your structure.
I'd put them all in one Library. (What about those great family shots that should be in your portfolio? The ones that you cropped and tweaked -- in which Library? -- and want to re-tweak for something you just thought of?) I would not categorize by date (Ap3 has that built-in). I would settle on a file-naming convention and stick to it rigorously (and I would start every file name with "YYYY-MM-DD_"). The benefits of a referenced Library are more than worth the small set-up cost (in time).
I now keep three root folders in my Library:
• New Imports
• Store & Cure
• Serve
I create a new Project for every shoot.
. Projects stay in the Folder "New Projects" until I have stacked, keyworded, added "Places" information, written a short description in the Project description field (including some text tags I use to track the development of the shots in the Project), and made my initial "selects". Since I am moving tens of thousands of images into Aperture, I find it useful to sequester the Projects which have been imported but not had any "intake" administration done to them or their images.
. Projects are then moved into the "Store & Cure" Folder, under which I have a full hierarchy of Folders which meet my needs. You may have two second-level Folders, "Family" and "Art Shots". This will allow you to quickly search on one, the other, or both. I do adjustments on my "selects" within the "Store & Cure" Folder.
. My third top-level folder does not contain any Projects. It is for output. Here I create albums (Smart or otherwise) for each of the Clients/jobs/sets/projects (small "p") that I have -- essentially, every group of images that is going to be output as a group. I have a Smart Album called "Portfolio" here (based on keyword). I plan on setting up two second-level folders: "Active" and "Archive".
I am, admittedly, overly hierarchical, and wont to expand functionality obsessively. Ap3 gives the user +tremendously useful tools+ for file and image management. I hope my details give you some ideas as to how to best exploit those tools for your needs.

  • How can I save a named filter and sorting for later use?

    I regularly do several different complex filtering and sorting on large tables. I did not find a way to save them for later one-click reuse. So I always have to do it again, which is time-consuming and error-prone. Hoped to get a solution by AppleScript, but filter and sort is not accessible by scripting.
    Is there a way or does Apple have it on it´s agenda for future versions of Numbers?

    Hi Jan,
    filter and sort is not accessible by scripting.
    There is some support for sort (and less for filter) in Numbers 3.
    Table has a filtered property.
    And you can sort.
    A sort example can be found at https://iworkautomation.com/numbers/table-sort.html.
    Not sure if this will be sufficient to handle your needs, but just wanted to point out there is some scripting support.

  • Mixed library - managed and referenced - and not sure what's best

    I've just come back to try iPhoto after a long time away. In the old days I used it exclusively to manage my photo library but wasn't a fan of how it forced all my photos into it's slightly unfriendly folder structure in the Finder and hence sort of force me to only ever use iPhoto to manage them.
    I graduated to learning Photoshop, got a DSLR, ditched iPhoto and maintained my own folder structure on the Finder. I was happy!
    But now I've got iPhoto '08 and I see you can import to iPhoto but NOT copy to the Library. Great! So I've started loading in all my personal 'event' photos as opposed to the more arty stuff that 75% of my photos consist of. It's nice to view them in iPhoto. But now it's getting complex. Now I have some older photos from before that are managed wholesale by the app, and all these others that are allegedly only 'referenced'. So, why is the Library expanding pretty heavily? And why, if I move a photo or even delete it in the Finder, are those changes not reflected whatsoever in iPhoto. What's actually going on in that Library???
    Furthermore, some of these new photos are Adobe RGB and others are sRGB. If I want to print a photobook via iPhoto, do I need to change them all to sRGB to maintain consistent colour in the book? And does that mean deleting all the photos in iPhoto, re-saving the originals as sRGB, then re-importing the referenced files? I ask because like I say, changing the FInder-based files does not seem to reflect in iPhoto.
    So far I'm not liking this. I'm very unwilling to import duplicates into the Library, thereby doubling the space taken up by my images!

    owen-b
    Here's my 2 cents.
    Best option: let iPhoto manage the files.
    2nd best option: You manage them
    Recipe for Disaster: A mixture.
    Here's why: The folder structure in iPhoto is very plain and easy to follow (and has been since v6 - which is also when the ability to reference files came in). A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
    In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
    Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
    (ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
    (iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
    Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
    You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
    Finding files is easy: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    You can set Photoshop or any editor as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
    If you run iPhoto outside the default setting, with referenced files, then you become responsible for all the file management. Importing and deleting are multi-stage operations and migrating to a new disk or Mac can be more complex. To be honest - and always allowing for personal preference - I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
    The problem with the third option - mixed - is that it's far too easy to forget who's managing which file - you or the app - and that way, data loss lies.
    To specific questions:
    And why, if I move a photo or even delete it in the Finder, are those changes not reflected whatsoever in iPhoto.
    iPhoto is a database. Like any database it cannot know about changes you make outside of the application. Think of it this way. You hire a filing clerk, let the clerk loose organising your files. Then the clerk goes home for the day and you go into the filing room and re-arrange things. Next day you complain because the clerk can't find your files?
    If you use iPhoto referencing your files, then deleting is a two stage process. Move the files to the iPhoto trash and empty it removes them from iPhoto. Then remove them from your own filing structure. If iPhoto manages the files, trashing them in iPhoto removes them from the HD as well. Moving files around in the Finder is hiding them from the filing clerk
    So, why is the Library expanding pretty heavily?
    Check out the structure of the library as described above. In the referenced library the Originals is populated with aliases, but the Modifieds does include pics that are flagged for auto rotation.
    I'm very unwilling to import duplicates into the Library, thereby doubling the space taken up by my images!
    Understandable. So don't waste the space. Let iPhoto manage the files and trash your own structure! A big leap, perhaps too big, so think about the referenced format. However, I have to say that a mixed library increases the risk of data loss exponentially.
    I'll leave the questions on color management to those more knowledgeable than me.
    Hope that helps.

  • Library paths and environment variables

    Hello,
    I am using 10g AS 9.0.4 on a Unix system.
    I am trying to convert an old JSP web application to work with 10g. It is not an EAR/WAR file so I am manually trying to set it up under the "default-web-app" folder. It uses a number of java class files which currently reside in $J2EE_HOME/default-web-app/WEB-INF/classes/mystuff.
    These class files require access to a number of libraries. I foolishly believed that they would be accessible if I were to place them in the $J2EE_HOME/default-web-app/WEB-INF/lib folder, but that did not work.
    I read that OC4J uses a "catch all" lib directory at $J2EE_HOME/applib. I copied the library files there and they still did not work.
    Frustrated, I tried to print out the environment variables for the server - only to find that this function is not supported.
    I managed to print out the library path by creating a Java class files which returns the following as a string:
    System.getProperty("java.library.path");
    This (when called from a JSP) prints a number of different library paths, none of which match those found listed in the $J2EE_HOME/config/application.xml file. I placed the library files in one of the paths listed by the "java.library.path" and it worked!
    3 questions:
    1. How do you print the server's environment variables using a JSP? This strikes me as a very useful function for sorting out library and path issues. Do a search on Google for "print environment variables OC4J" or something similar and there are no useful pages suggesting how this can be done.
    2. Why are the default library paths different on the server than to those specified in application.xml?
    3. How do I change the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (or any environment variable for that matter)? I have tried adding the following line to $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Jserv/etc/jserv.properties without success:
    wrapper.env=LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/my/custom/library/path
    Any help you can offer would be most appreciated.

    >
    Thanks very much for a such a comprehensive response
    - it has helped answer a lot of questions, especially
    being able to print out the system properties. That
    will be really useful!
    No worries at all Rob.
    The main hurdle is that the libraries are indeed
    native (*.so) libraries. I hadn't considered that
    until you pointed it out in your message. Can I
    assume, then, that $J2EE_HOME/applib and
    $J2EE_HOME/default-web-app/WEB-INF/lib are only
    designed to handle Java's .JAR librares? That would
    explain why placing the native libraries in there
    didn't work, but is there a way of getting such
    native libraries recognised and bundled up in a
    WAR/EAR file?
    Yep, that's it.
    Our proprietary applib and the servlet specs web-inf/lib are only dealing with Java archives.
    The J2EE specs don't cover how to deal with native libs like this.
    Now I've NEVER EVER tried it, but it's worth a shot of at least trying -- for simplified packaging purposes, what you may be able to do is to distribute the .so's within the web-inf/lib -- and then just set that directory (where's its realized on the server after the app is deployed) to be referenced witihn the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I'd expect our deployment manager will just ignore files it doesn't know about, so arguably you should be able to at least distribute them with the standard archive.
    You'll need to specifically set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH as a separate task outside of the deployment operation though.
    >
    This is where things get a bit weird, and is partly
    my fault during the installation of 10g AS.
    We already had an existing installation of Oracle 10g
    Database (10.1.0) at $ORACLE_HOME under the user
    "oracle". I logged in as the user "oracle" to install
    the Application Server into a different location (In
    this case, "$ORACLE_HOME/../ias10g_9.0.4" - let's
    call this $IAS_HOME). So there is no separate user
    account for Oracle Database and Application Server
    (and hence no separate $LD_LIBRARY_PATH).
    If I log into UNIX as the user "oracle" and echo the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH, I get the following directories:
    $ORACLE_HOME/lib
    /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
    /usr/dt/lib
    /usr/lib
    I use this user to do "opmnctl stopall" and "opmnctl
    startall". If I then print out the library path from
    a JSP using
    "System.getProperty("java.library.path");", I get the
    following paths:
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/sparc/server
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/sparc
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/../lib/sparc
    $IAS_HOME/opmn/lib
    $IAS_HOME/lib
    $IAS_HOME/usr/lib
    Which is totally different to those listed by
    $LD_LIBRARY_PATH at the command line, which means
    they must be coming from somewhere else.
    It gets worse - my application is trying to call a
    native library that is only present in the
    $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 directory (libclntsh.so.10.1), so
    unless I can include this path in the
    "java.library.path" on the Applicaiton Server, then
    my program will not work.
    So, how do I change the "java.library.path" when the
    values aren't coming from $LD_LIBRARY_PATH in the
    first place?
    The utility $IAS_HOME/opmn/bin/opmnctl is actually a shell script.
    It has this section which sets the LD_LIBRARY_PATH:
    if [ -z "$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" ]
    then
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/lib ; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    else LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} ; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    fi
    So if you have an existing LD_LIBRARY_PATH env var set, it should just be putting its paths onto the front of it.
    What you could try as a quick test is to edit the opmnctl script (after taking a backup of course) and either appending the path you need to it, or just add some debug statements to output the LD_LIBRARY_PATH value it ends up setting so you can try and work out what's causing it.
    I expect these other entries:
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/sparc/server
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/sparc
    $IAS_HOME/jdk/jre/../lib/sparc
    are coming from the JRE when it is launched, in probably a similar manner to our opmn entries.
    I really appreciate your help, and I bet if anyone
    can answer these questions, you can! ;-)
    You're very welcome.
    cheers

  • Sort Artist and Sort Album tags don't update

    Having spent a lot of time over the years getting the metadata in my iTunes library just right, I've noticed a frustrating problem when it comes to iTunes Match.
    I make use of 'Sort Artist' and 'Sort Album Artist' tags so that my library is sorted by artist surname (eg. Lennon, John).
    This always worked correctly when I syncronised my music via iTunes, but since switching over to iTunes Match this has become problematic.
    When I initially signed up for iTunes Match, my Library moved over correctly - honouring the sort order tags that I had added. However, When I add NEW music to the library and subsequently change the sort tag, the change does not propegate to iTunes Match (Though it does appear correct in iTunes on my Mac). So the result is now a mixed sort order on my iOS devices - some by first name and some by second.
    Under iOS 5.0 and iTunes 10 I used to be able to get around this with a little forethought - I would turn iTunes Match OFF on the Mac before adding any new songs, then I would edit the tags and then switch Match back on. This would rescan the library and add the new tracks to the cloud complete with correct metadata.
    This workaround no longer works under iOS 6 and iTunes 11.
    I have tried switching iTunes match off on my iPhone and restarting it. This does not work either.
    Does anyone else have this issue or know of a way to 'force' the metadata to be updated?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I also am finding it impossible to convince my iPhone that the Album Sort field exists. This is especially odd considering when I view my Home Shared music from my iPhone, it works exactly correctly. I have verified that the tags are being uploaded to iTunes Match by viewing the songs from another computer that has iTunes Match. So, for some reason, iOS 6 will not sort by the Album Sort field when using iTunes Match music.
    Does anyone have any sort of fix or workaround for this problem? I've submitted Feedback to Apple.

  • How do I update iTunes without loosing my existing library ratings and playlists?

    I am so tired of deleting the songs the program cannot find because I did an update!  with over 7500 songs loaded this takes a while, I loose all my ratings and songs in my playlists.  The songs don't go away I just have to add the file folder again so it can find the songs.  Fine, but then I am left with over 7500 "duplicates" that were originally loaded with ratings and sorted into playlists.  Anyone know about this?

    The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
    Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then say no when asked to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
    In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps and locate the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.
    Or see this post on deduplication.

  • IMovie: Event Library Disappears and Projects are Not Editable...

    Was in the middle of editing an iMovie project when it froze.
    Restarted the application and now there is no list under Project Library, and I can't click on the Event Library.
    I can see that the video is still there because it plays when I hit the spacebar but I can't edit any video components or export it.
    Have tried restarting, installing updates, etc but no luck.

    Delete (trash) iMovie's preference file. First, close iMovie then in Finder go to your user (home) folder Library>Preferences and locate the file named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Drag this file to the Trash. When next opened, iMovie will create a new preference file with the default settings.
    You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference. To do this, in iMovie go to the menu item iMove>Preferences and if desired change any settings under each of the 4 tabs.

  • Changed info and sort won't save in iTunes

    I changed the info and sorting of my songs in the iTunes Library. When I open iTunes the next day, it goes back to sorting the old way. If I open the info and hit "next", it will resort. Obviously, this gets old when done 1700 times. Any thoughts to get it to keep sorting the way I want it to? I am using Windows 7, iTunes 11.3.1.2.

    Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and turn off
    Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
    Share details about your library with Apple
    On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
    Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.

  • IPhoto Questions:  Merge and Sort;  Cropping;  Collage

    Hello,
         I have some iPhoto questions:
         (1)  I have several different photos from different sources of my son's wedding.  I have merged the photos into one album and sorted them by date in iPhoto, but they are still showing all over the place.  How do I merge/sort them so that they all show in chronological/date & time order?
         (2)  I can only crop in square or rectangular shape.  Does iPhoto have a way of cropping using different shapes like heart, circle, triangle, etc?
         (3)  I cannot seem to find a way to create a collage in iPhoto where I can put 2 or more photos in one frame.  Is there a way for iPhoto to do this?
         I am not sure if these are iPhoto limitations or I need an upgrade to a version that can do all these?
    Thanks...

    As it merges the libraries iphoto library manager will ask you what you want to do with duplicates. However, remember files with different sizes are not duplicates. Also importing one library to another is not a good idea. You'll get a mess of different versions of files treated as new imports, so that's no way to merge.

  • Library consolidation and disc space

    Dear Mac community
    When the latest iPhoto 6 update (6.06) was installed, it didn't contain my active iPhoto library. I realized that it was probably because that library a) wasn't named iPhoto Library, and b)wasn't in the "my pictures" folder. The larger problem was that there are multiple libraries in different locations in my HD, some with imported (copied) photos, others originals.
    Solution was to consolidate all libraries into a new one. Bought and tried to use iPhoto library manager, and started merging 2 libraries. After some time, I got a "startup disc nearing capacity" notice, and realized it was copying all my photos to the new library, not moving them. I cancelled the migration with 165mb left on my HD.
    Questions:
    1) What is the best way to consolidate several photo libraries, with a mix of good and probably corrupted files?
    2) When doing that consolidation, how can I keep within the capacity of my HD
    3) What libraries/folders can I then delete without risk of losing my original images?
    Many thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Let’s get the really important stuff out of the way first:
    OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially. Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
    When the latest iPhoto 6 update (6.06) was installed, it didn't contain my active iPhoto library
    Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    1) What is the best way to consolidate several photo libraries, with a mix of good and probably corrupted files?
    As you’ve tried, using iPhoto Library Manager.
    2) When doing that consolidation, how can I keep within the capacity of my HD
    The only way to do this is to make space on the HD.
    3) What libraries/folders can I then delete without risk of losing my original images?
    Once you’ve merged two libraries, it depends: dis you merge Library A into Library B? Then you can trash Library A. Did you merge A and B and into a new Library C? Then trash A and B.

  • Combining bookmarks .html files, and sorting

    Hi,
    (1) I know how to import bookmarks, but, once I import all of my bookmark .html files, (have 6)... than I go to show all bookmarks, I have 6 "unsorted bookmarks" folder tabs, and one "unsorted bookmarks" tab of my current bookmarks. How do I combine all of these into 1 giant .html file? Or is it automatically combined once I imported, to where I can export and it'll have all 6 old .html files and my current bookmarks?
    (2) I know how to sort bookmarks, and I like sorting by "location", but is there a way to export as .html file so it saves the .html book mark file by "location"?
    (3) In the .html file there is some sub description for each bookmark, such as "Twitter is a social networking site, where users tweet to other users blah blah", is there any way to delete this? I'd like it only to display the bookmark name and the URL (usually I'll have to click on the name and it'll open up the website), but I like the website to be typed out.

    -1- <br />Yes all those bookmarks.html files will be merged into Firefox, and when you 'export' from Firefox those 6 files will be in one html file. No those extra 'unsorted bookmarks' folders won't be automatically combined, you need to do that yourself.
    -2-<br />No, 'location' sorting isn't reflected in an exported bookmarks.html file. That type of 'sort' is temporary in the Library view, and doesn't rearrange bookmarks in the places.sqlite file which is what is exported in html format. <br />

    I have prepared a personal budget and sorted the planned expenses by month, but they are out of order. How do I correct?

    David,
    You've got to give us something to go on here. At least post a screen shot so we can see how your data is arranged. I suspect that you may have named the months with text strings rather than as actual Date values, so when you sort they are in alphabetical order rather than date order.

  • WebPart: Display the search result in an spgridview with filter and sort

    hi,
    For explain more in details.
    I need the search result in a table displaying some meta common in the different library.
    I've to have the possibility to filter and sort the grid.
    i'm trying to extend Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls.CoreResultsWebPart
    i can have the result from the textbox search with: SharedQueryManager.GetInstance(this.Page).QueryManager
    My queryManager is populate in the method: CreateChildControls
    I put the sample code i use. and in the populateData method, my querymanager is null while in the createChildContriol, it's correctly populate with : this.queryManager = SharedQueryManager.GetInstance(this.Page).QueryManager;
    using System;
    using System.ComponentModel;
    using System.Web;
    using System.Web.UI;
    using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
    using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.Search.Internal.WebControls;
    using Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query;
    using Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls;
    using System.Data;
    using System.Xml;
    namespace CustomSearchResultWebPart.CustomCoreResultWebPart
    [ToolboxItemAttribute(false)]
    public class CustomCoreResultWebPart : Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls.CoreResultsWebPart
    private ObjectDataSource objDS;
    private const string ObjectDataSourceID = "gridViewDataSource";
    private QueryManager queryManager;
    private SPGridView gridView = new SPGridView();
    protected override void CreateChildControls()
    //here is correctly populate
    this.queryManager = SharedQueryManager.GetInstance(this.Page).QueryManager;
    try
    LoadSearchGrid();
    catch (Exception ex)
    Page.Response.Write(ex.Message + " - " + ex.StackTrace);
    //base.CreateChildControls();
    protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e)
    base.OnInit(e);
    protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e)
    base.OnLoad(e);

    DataSet dtSet = null;
    DataTable dtTable = null;
    //here is my query manager is null
    if (queryManager != null && queryManager.Count > 0)
    XmlDocument xdoc = new XmlDocument(); //We are using XmlDocument
    xdoc = queryManager.GetResults(queryManager[0]);//xml returned by search
    if (xdoc != null)
    XmlReader xmlReader = new XmlNodeReader(xdoc);
    dtSet = new DataSet();
    dtSet.ReadXml(xmlReader);
    if (dtSet.Tables.Count > 1)
    dtTable = dtSet.Tables["Result"];
    return dtTable;
    private void LoadSearchGrid()
    this.objDS = new ObjectDataSource();
    this.objDS.ID = ObjectDataSourceID;
    this.objDS.SelectMethod = "populateData";
    this.objDS.TypeName = this.GetType().AssemblyQualifiedName;
    this.objDS.ObjectCreating += new ObjectDataSourceObjectEventHandler(objDS_ObjectCreating);
    this.Controls.Add(objDS);
    gridView.ID = "_gridView";
    gridView.AutoGenerateColumns = false;
    gridView.Width = new Unit(100, UnitType.Pixel);
    gridView.EnableViewState = false;
    gridView.AllowPaging = true;
    gridView.PageSize = 5;
    gridView.DataSourceID = ObjectDataSourceID;
    this.Controls.Add(gridView);
    void objDS_ObjectCreating(object sender, ObjectDataSourceEventArgs e)
    //e.ObjectInstance = objDS;
    protected void gridView_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
    //throw new NotImplementedException();
    Do you have a sample that i can use or some tutorial?
    thanks for your help

    I added this in my class
    public class CustomResultsDatasource : CoreResultsDatasource
    public CustomResultsDatasource(Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.WebControls.CoreResultsWebPart parentWebPart)
    : base(parentWebPart)
    View = new CustomResultsDatasourceView(this, GetType().Name);
    public class CustomResultsDatasourceView : CoreResultsDatasourceView
    public CustomResultsDatasourceView(SearchResultsBaseDatasource dataSourceOwner, string viewName)
    : base(dataSourceOwner, viewName)
    //make sure we have a value for the datasource
    if (DataSourceOwner == null)
    throw new ArgumentNullException("DataSourceOwner");
    CustomResultsDatasource datasource = this.DataSourceOwner as CustomResultsDatasource;
    this.QueryManager = SharedQueryManager.GetInstance(datasource.ParentWebpart.Page).QueryManager;
    And this in my customSearchResultWebPart
    protected override void CreateDataSource()
    //base.CreateDataSource();
    this.DataSource = new CustomResultsDatasource(this);
    How can i use queryManager in populateData?
    thanks for your help

  • Comparing and sorting raw (NEF) & JPG in LR

    I am interested in importing raw & jpg and then comparing them.
    I want to apply different effects on the raw files to see if I can match or better the jpg files as rendered by the camera
    (I use Nikon).
    Background:
    In the past I have used L:R to view my Nikon NEF files side by side with JPG files from the camera and discovered the amazing versatility of the NEF files at fixing problems in image files and I have therefore always preferred working with RAW files.
    But recently I read a discussion of NikonView (or maybe it was different editing software by Nikon -NX2?) compared to LR wherein several people agreed that Nikon is better at rendering its own NEF files than ADOBE  and they suggested that this was because Nikon engineers know the exact processes (algorithms?) they used to extract & compute the chip data and therefore can better engineer the right editing environment, while Adobe uses a "best guess".  I have no idea whether this is true but it seemed plausible.
    Now I don't own the latest Nikon Software but I wanted to see if I could compare "good" JPGs out of the camera with the image Raw data in LR.
    (Without having to buy the softwareor even open a free trial version)
    The first thing I did was import NEF files and JPG files as separate imports into the same catalog, by changing my import settings.
    It was easy to notice the difference on my screen. (How that translates to print, I dunno.)
    What surprized me was that the JPGs out of the camera immediately looked better than the "Unproessed" NEF files.
    (When properly captured.)  I don't expect them to be as easy to enhance as the raw files though.
    But could I get the Raw file to resemble the JPGS?
    I attempted to set the NEF files to my preferred camera profiles, ( was using portrait setting in camera)
    Even upon eidting my first RAW file I noticed that if I wanted to match the JPGs, I would have to use other adjustments such as contrast, recovery etc.
    I intended to do quick mass-adjustments to the RAW files to see if I could match or beat the JPGs for overall image quality
    I wanted to use Synch to copy those setting to each NEF file.so I set out to sort out the NEF files and JPG files into different groupings and soon discovered I don't know how to do this:
    IS THERE A QUICK WAY TO SORT / GROUP FILE TYPES IN LR?
    Can I select just the RAW file or just the JPG files?
    I know I can sort files by metadata,  but can't figure out how to sort by extension.
    I realize I can do a workaround by removing the entire folder from the catoalgue and sorting them using windows explorer(XP) and then reimporting them separately.
    But I think there should be an easy way to sort them right in LR.  But I fear there  is not.  Am I right?
    Once I sort them I would be able to mass-apply settings (like contrast adjustments) to one set or another and do some side - by - side comparisons between the RAW files and the JPGs and get the most out of my photos.

    To select by file type, go to the metadata panel in the Library filter (if this isn't showing check
    Show filter bar in the view menu). Then click on any of the meta data panels and select file type. Select the file type you want to see.
