Library of Clips

Im fairly new with iMovie so please forgive.
I want to import from the camcorder to iMovie and then save the individual clips as separate files into a directory structure that allows me to organize them in what ever way I want.
However I do not want to lose any quality as I want the clips to be used in multiple projects sometime in the future. I don't always have a need inmediatly for a particular clip, so I want to create a library of them and import them into iMovie or Final Cut Express (when I graduate to it).
I don't want to lose quality or flexibility, and I dont necesarly want them as iMovie projects since they are clips and I have not yet decided what project I will be creating. Think stock raw film clips.
Is this possible?
How I go about saving the individual clips as separate files (remember the camcorder imported a lot of them into the iMovie project and now I want to move each separetly as a separate file. Yes I may remove some of the obviously undesirable frames but other than that no editing will occur at this stage.
Any help would be appreciated

One work around to do this and also not eat up all your drive space with tons of video clips is to import your footage to iMovie, say one tape = one hour at a time, each tape a separate project. Quick method is to do no editing and just insert lots of chapter markers to mark starts of scenes. Now export to iDVD and create a DVD of your footage. Erase project from drive. You now have a DVD that makes a nice index of the tape you imported. Label the DVD the same as the tape. Store tape in cool, dark, dry place. When you need to find useful footage, you can pop in the DVD you made and scan around. The chapter markers will come in handy to allow you to jump forward and backward easily. When you find a scene you want, you only need to jot down a note about which DVD it came from and where in the movie it is. e.g. DVD8 starting at 32:56.
After you have gone through your DVD indexes you should have a nice cheat sheet of scenes. All you have to do now is retrieve the tapes that correspond to the DVDs and fast forward to the scene you want since the DVD time will match the tape time. And import the scenes to your new project.
The slightly more complex version is the same as above but do whatever light editing you feel is necessary such as removing the obvious errors (video taped your shoe accidentally) or overly long scenes (15 seconds of baby hiccupping is great, 234 seconds of it is not!). Now export back onto digital tape then make your DVD. You could export to a new tape effectively making a second backup copy of your tapes (not a bad idea). Just be sure to try and store your original separate from your new copies just in case. Maybe keep a set at work or at a relatives house. If something happens to your house (e.g. fire) and both sets are in the same house...
Not exactly what you were looking for, I know, but an idea that might be close enough for you.

  • Library movie clip not readable

I apologize if this seems like a stupid question, but I've
only been using flash for a month, and I've been teaching myself
how. I'm attempting to make a simple interactive clip where an
onscreen icon performs an action when clicked on. Since it's a
graphic, I created the movie clip in the library. When I go to
reference it in actionscript (AS3), the code doesn't seem to
recognize what I'm doing. The code being used is this:
    function onclick(event:MouseEvent):void{
    gotoAndPlay('Click');
    your_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onclick);
'Click' is the label of the frame I want it to jump to. If
necessary, I could convert it into Actionscript 2. Thanks in
    advanced!

Telling it not to "act" like a button constitutes removing
any button-like actions [e.g. on(click)] and making sure its symbol
behavior in the Library is "Movie clip" and not "Button." However,
if you simply want to remove the hand cursor...
    useHandCursor = false;

  • How can I move clips from one library to another? Clips are still in original drive and not in new drive.

I am using iMovie 10.0.7 on a 1-week old iMac 27" running Yosemite 10.10.2. I migrated from iMovie 9 on a 2008 iMac running Snow Leopard and updated the libraries and events, etc.
I have two external drives connected via USB. I want to move / consolidate the library and clips from one of the external drives to the new iMac's 3TB fusion drive. This is to make room on the external drive to run Time Machine backups.
Apple's instructions on managing libraries and moving/copying clips/events tell me to drag to move between libraries and to Option-drag to copy. However, simply dragging only copies. I find that if I Command-drag the events/clips, I can "move" them. But when I look outside iMovie in the Mac OS X Finder, the event folders and clip files themselves are still sitting in the original drive.
I'm very perplexed as to how to really move the clips and event structure. Should I manually copy the clips and event folder structure outside of iMovie? I worry I will mess up iMovie's internal record keeping and folder structure information.
    Thanks in advance.

Ahh, Ok. I actually had to go to Lynda.com to watch a training video of this highly bassackwards maneuver, but now I have it. In other words, while the intuitive thing is to make a new event to hold the clip you want and then open the old event and drag the clip into it's new event, the only way to accomplish this maneuver is to NOT create a new event, but rather, go to the clip AFTER the one you want to move, select it and then Right-Click on it and select SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP (or go to FILE>SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP). Then you wait a few seconds while the program thinks a bit (no feedback it is doing this - just a pause) and then it automatically creates a new event with the clip you wanted. Now just double-click the new event and name it something meaningful.
    Thanks for your help!

  • A tip how to make iMovie '08 rescan the iPhoto library for video clips

I could not figure out how to easily force iMovie '08 to rescan all iPhoto library video clips. My problem was that my Casio S880 videos had the audio format DVI ADPCM which is not supported by iMovie '08. I made a script which transcoded all my iPhoto library videos' audio track to AAC. But after this was done, the iMovie didn't still show them in iPhoto videos. iMovie checks only for NEW entries in iPhoto Library after last scan.
One simple workaround is to duplicate the transcoded video in iPhoto and then delete the original. But if you have a lot of clips here is a better way to do this:
NOTE: This trick does not reimport already imported clips. This trick is useful only if you want to force iMovie '08 to recheck old iPhoto movie clips if they are now valid for iMovie '08 or not.
    1. Close iMovie '08
    2. Open file HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist with the Property List Editor application (I think the application is part of Apple Developer Tools, I'm not sure if included in default installation). You may want to take a backup of the property file before opening it!
    3. Find "lastiPhotoXMLDate" property and change the date value to be some older date, for example if you want to scan all files just change the year part to 1980 or similar.
    4. Save the property file
    5. Open iMovie '08, it should now check all iPhoto movie clips again if they are valid for iMovie '08.
The same thing can be achieved by just deleting the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist file, but then you lose all your other settings.

I apologize for my confusion on your question.  I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo.  It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer.  If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds.  For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

  • Can't drag clip into movie

I have a library of clips. I've created projects before. I create a new project. I try to drag a clip into the new movie. It fails. The little clip icon just snaps back to the original location of the clip. I try other clips. Same thing.
Something has changed iMovie such that I can't create a new project and drag clips into it.

My bad. Error was between the chair and the keyboard. I was trying to drag whole clips rather than selections of frames.

  • Creating a Video "Library" in Pr

    Hi,
Recently I have decided to make the switch from Final Cut Pro X to premiere pro. This switch is mainly due to the cool dynamic link features in premiere.
I generally edit video mashups/compilations as backdrop visuals for DJs. Some of my videos include clips from over 80 different sources. I'm currently using Final Cut Pro X to do all the editing and now feel I have outgrown it a bit. When I'm editing in FCPX I use my events and key tags as a means of organizing a wide variety of clips. What I like about this system is it allows me to bring in any of my key tagged clips into a current project. In an Ideal world I would have this same type of “library” of clips to pull from in premiere.
    So my two question are:
    1. Is there a way to easily access clips (including metadata)  from previous projects in premiere  so that I can add them to a current project?
    2. Do you have any advice about organizing a massive video library like this?
As an important side note all of the videos I sample are by permission or a commercial Creative Commons license.
I would love to hear a professional opinion on this, Thanks for the help!

oh yeah one more question - any suggestions or links to
something that could automate this - i.e. a javascript or extension
    - where I wouldn't have to do much coding . . . yes lazy I
    know!

  • No audio in events library

When previewing clips using the events library, some clips do not playback their audio. I have audio skimming turned on however about half of my clips in my event do not play audio. If I drag to the timeline they playback fine. There is absolutly no dfference in media between the clips that playback/skim audio and those that do not.
One thing that I have noticed however is that the problem clips (those not skiming audio in the events library) have an "(id)" appended to the end of their file names in the "Orginal Media" folder within the "Final Cut Events" folder. The clips that skim audio have their original file name. Are these two things related? Does anyone know what is happening here?
    Thanks.

Thank you Tom for your reply. Your suggestion to look at the QT inspector prompted me to check the inspector within FCPX as well to try to spot a difference between those clips that were skimming and those that were not.
For some reason the problem clips have a Channel Configuration set to Custom. FCPX apperantly tries to auto-detech the channel config and it seems to have gotten it wrong. Setting the Channel Configuration for these clips to Four Mono has solved the issue (my clips have four channels of mono audio). Thanks for the help.

  • Clip Art for Pages?

This there "Clip Art" in Pages like there is in MS Word? I would like to put some Christmas Clip Art in some documents that I will be creating. I would like for them to be high resolution so they look good when I print them on high quality paper.
Is there a library of clip art in Pages for me to use?
    Kevin Hawkins

Well, yes and no. There is no formal set of clipart for Pages, but I did do a rather large set of themes for Keynote a while back, and many of the elements were graphic image files which work well with Pages.
It was called the twelve Themes of Christmas, included numerous religious images (some unique images of unglazed nativity figures) and velvet themes (complete with gold cords)
Then there was the Gingerbread theme, complete with numerous candy graphics (including Cookies! And several styles of hard candy)
A few of the other themes were simpler, but the most complex was the Wrapping theme, including riibbons, bows, several styles of wrapping paper and such.
All the themes came with special corners, tops, bottoms and sides that would fit seamlessly for slide-slide transitions (box, slide, etc) All of them work rather well in Pages (they are sized for 1024x768 slides) and are 'good enough' for most projects (the corners could be used with the various pieces to create longer items)
I took them off the market due to the size (300M altogether) and a family emergency that turned up. Since then I have directed most of my energies to Pages.
Would they be appropriate for your uses? I'm unsure of how much interest there would be for such a heavy download.

  • Any way to import from another drive and leave clips in place?

    Hi
Is there any way to import from other drives where you can leave your media in place?
Whenever I've imported clips from another drive I had to copy them to the library, while clips on the same drive as the library I could leave in place. Besides getting a bit tired of FCP treating like a kid with Alzheimer's, what would one do, say, when a drive gets full? I could see big projects needing more than a single drive.
    best
    elmer

LIke Russ said, the copy of the entire folder structure is similar to creating a camera archive. This copy or archive is treated just as if it were a camera card - in particular, "leave in place" is not available, and you have the option go import just parts of clips if you want.
so technicay even though they reside in a hard drive this is like importing from camera, as opposed to "import from file".
I Will try to describe how I handle my media. I hope this will help clarify things a bit. I am not saying thus is the way to do things, but it is my way.
I keep archives of the camera cards, which I then erase and reuse.
I import clips from my camera archives which I store as external media (copying to a folder of my choosing instead of into the library). These movie files, plus other files that I get from other sources, can be later imported and used in other libraries using "leave in place".
And all of this of course needs to be regularly backed up.

  • Locking clips, adding slideshows from iphoto to imovie and reverting clips.

I have a few questions about imovie HD 6.
    1. I am working on adding snips of video and pictures to my imovie project. However, I have several small clips that I want to add to a single audio clip. Is there a way to lock several video clips to my audio clip? It seems as though when I try to add another 'lock' the first one disappears. (I thought of maybe splitting the audio clip up. Is there an easier way that i'm not seeing?)
    2. Is there a way to keep the quality from an iphoto slideshow after importing it into imovie. Is it even possible to import an iphoto slideshow into imovie?
    3. I had a large 1 hour clip that I split up into 20 or 25 clips. I then added some effects to some of the clips. If I decide later that I do not want a particular effect and click the 'revert to original' button. Will it revert my entire 'library' of clips that I created back into the 1 hour clip I started with?
    Thanks,
    Elly

    1. The function locks an audio clip to a video clip, not a video clip to an audio clip. So, after locking an audio clip to a video clip, if you then lock the audio clip to another video clip it will unlock the first one. That's why you are observing that the lock disappears. If you lock the audio clip to the first video clip in a series, that will keep the audio clip in place for the entire series when you slide the first clip along the time line, pushing the other video clips ahead of it. I would not split up the audio clip into several pieces, unless you intend to move or change the sequence of the individual video clips.
    2. In iMovie playback, your iPhoto images are displayed in low resolution. Therefore, your iPhoto images always will look worse in iMovie playback. However, the display in your final product DVD will look much clearer than in iMovie playback. Yes, you can export an iPhoto slide show into iMovie. The best way that I have found is to use the iPhoto file menu to export the slideshow to your desk top as a full quality Quicktime Movie (File/Export/Full Quality) and then drag that Quicktime movie into your iMovie project as one long clip. You can also drag it directly into an iDVD project as a movie.
    3. The "revert" function will operate only on the split clip that you select to revert. The remaining split off clips will remain un-reverted. For example, if you split a clip into clips A, B, and C, and then revert clip A back to the original, clip A will revert back to the entire original clip that you had split into A, B, and C. (In your case, that would be the entire one hour clip that you started with, with no effects in it.) So clip A will now also include B and C and all other clips that you may have split from the original clip. But B and C also will still remain untouched as additional separate clips. That leaves you with having to re-edit clip A to avoid having repetitious clips. Rather than using the "revert to original" function to clear an effect from a clip, instead use the "clear" function. Each time that you use the "clear" function on a clip, it will remove the last added effect from the selected clip but will not effect any of the other clips.
I hope that I have answered your questions. I suggest that you set up a small test iMovie project and experiment with the "revert" and "clear" functions.

  • Capturing to a library? (And FCStudio Q)

I´ve tried searching the forum, but didn´t find anything on this. I haven´t bought video editing software yet, I´m wondering if I should go FC Express or FC Studio 2. I´ve done some editing in Premiere, used After Effects a bit, albeit a few versions ago. I´ll mostly do editing for home or internal corporate use, but want to get skills to eventually do bigger stuff.
When I capture, either DV or HDV, I don´t want to capture to a project. I want to capture it to a library of clips I can later use in various projects. For example, for space purposes, I´m thinking one disk for DV and one for HDV. (Got a 2 x 500GB external drive.)
Can I do this in FCP? Or even FCS2? Will such a library be searchable, across more than one disc? Anyone?

When you capture in FCE, the clips are written to your scratch disk location. The default location is a folder called +/Final Cut Express Documents/Capture Scratch.+ Depending on how you want to physically organize your clips on your hard drives, you might only need to set your 2 hard drives as successive FCE scratch disk locations. On the other hand, if you prefer to keep DV on one drive and HDV on the other, all you need to do is Copy your clips to the appropriate hard drive after you capture them.
You will have to have at least 1 FCE Project in order to capture and view clips. Once captured, the clip(s) can be used in ANY project. The Browser pane is quite useful for organizing all of your clips. One of the options in the Browser is to show a thumbnail image of each clip. With the Bin and Folder features in the Browser you have a good deal of power to organize your clips the way you want to.
Neither FCE nor FCStudio are cataloging apps, but you could use 1 Project as your catalog. You can always create more projects and use/reuse your clips in them.
It also might be worth your while to take at look at FootTrack and iDive. They are capture/cataloging applications and can be used in conjunction with FCE. At present both are strictly DV applications but FootTrack has announced they will support HDV in their next release.

  • Clip from in-out selected range

How do you make a clip from an in-out selected range on the storyline in FCPX?

    Thanks Tom...
What I meant by a selected range was basically, when working in the timeline of previous NLE's I've used, sometimes I have a section of the timeline that I'd like to make a standalone clip of...  to keep it in a library of clips that remain online and un-archived for repeated use...
In other NLE's I've been able to create an in-out point to encompass the selection of video I wanted to export to a clip, and then export just that selection between the in and out point on the time line...
In FCPX I only see a way to share the entire storyline, but was hoping for the added functionality to which I am speaking...
Thank you though...  I will have to do a little extra work accomplish this manually I suppose, unless you can share a way for me to change my thinking on how to accomplish this another way in FCPX.  Regards.

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

  • "Would you like to install a Java SE 6 runtime now?" NO!!!

Every 30 minutes or so, the message, To open “java,” you need a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now? pops on my screen no matter what software I am using. I disabled anything Java in my web browsers, looking at the log in the Console, etc. To no avail. Needless to say, I am greatly disinclined to install an application that Apple decided to drop after experts warned about its security, but how can I stop this pesky message?

  • How can I get a preloader to launch a main (external) swf file, and have the main file remove the preloader once it's fully loaded?

    Using Flash MX, ActionScript 2:
I’ve been struggling for several weeks, trying to get a preloader to work on a large (~80 MB) photo portfolio file (using the method where the preloader is on frame 1 of the file, and when loading is completed, it jumps to the content).  I’ve done countless tutorials, and none seem to work on my presentation.  I even tried downloading a trial version of CS4 so I could export every one of the file’s library movie clips and images so that they load on Frame 2 (a feature MX doesn’t have).  It takes about 20 seconds for the .exe to load from a CD, and no matter which preloader construction I use, it always seems to appear in the last few seconds before the movie loads completely.  During the initial wait time, there’s no indication that anything is happening:  no hourglass on the mouse, and not even a blank screen. This is only true for the first time that the file is loaded from the CD; on subsequent loads, the file must already be in RAM, because it loads within a few seconds.
I decided that I’m going to try and make the file which the user clicks on (one named Windows_Portfolio.exe or another called Mac_Portfolio.hqx) the preloader so that it would be tiny, and would load instantly.  I want that file to launch the external huge portfolio file (renamed files.swf), keep track of its loading progress, and cycle through a slideshow (10 thumbnail images that transition into each other over 100 frames) proportionally, based upon the percentage of files.swf that had been loaded.
I assume that there should be a loadMovie() or a loadMovieNum() command on the preloader’s timeline to launch files.swf, and that the initial code of files.swf should have some sort of this._parent._visible=false or other way of deleting the preloader on level0.  Can anyone explain the steps to me, or direct me to a good Flash MX tutorial that explains how to launch another external swf from a preloader .exe, keep track of its load progress, and delete the preloader .exe once the external swf had been loaded?
Also, I’ve read that, using this construction on a CD, every file has to be in the same place, and that I can’t nest files.swf in a folder named “files,” and reference it with files/files.swf.  Is this true?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

If you know JavaScript (ECMA Script) then you might be able to get it done applying a for loop and a random function
to the for loop if you know how to get a page-loaded request into JavaScript.
But an easier solution, if you know ActionScript 3.0, and if your SWF's don't need to be recoded and can load into a "container" SWF would be to create a master FLA file that loads your SWF's in a random fashion using Math.random() as a multiplier, though you won't see much variation if you only have 2-3 SWF's to load--if you had more than that then you would begin to benefit from the random function's capabilities.  In ActionScript 3.0 use the load() method along with addChild() to load the SWF and add it to the stage.  You will be able to search for specifics on how to code the FLA properly by using Flash's Adobe Help tool and also using an internet search.
    -markerline
P.S. Once you have the master FLA coded you can Publish it to an SWF and an HTML and if the container/master SWF needs to be in a page with other content you can simply copy and paste the object and embed tags for the container SWF from the published HTML into any place on your master HTML that you need it to reside.  You can then use CSS to control placement of the SWF object if it is in a div tag.
