Library on an external hard disk

I have my itunes music on an external hard disk and I want to install itunes on a new laptop and view the existing itunes library that is on the external hard disk.
I have installed itunes on the new laptop and changed the default location of the itunes library to the path of the external hard disk and clicked on consolidate library but it will not show the music on the external hard disk.
Is there something else I need to do to view the library?

When using ext HD's for my iTunes I find it easier to keep the iTunes Library File and .xml on the external drive.
I also re-name the library file - ie: iTunes Master Library. So I would have a path of HD>iTunes>Master Library> Then the library files, art work etc>iTunes Music which is where the music folders reside. I use the 'keep' and 'copy' features enabled in iTunes prefs.
I rename the library file to differentiate each library from another.

  • I have transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files.

I transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files. Itunes created new ones but I lost all the playlists.
How can I copy the playlists presents on the Iphone directly on Itunes ?
If I want to syncronise now, I lost all playlists datas.

    Hi,
I did the same XP to Windows 7 upgrade about 18 months ago.   I decided to keep iTunes permanently on the external drive than the c drive to save c: drive space.
ITunes database has pointers to MP3 files located in Artist's directories.  If you want to use a different location than the default C:\ drive for iTunes, then you need to recreate the Itunes database by deleting all songs in iTunes, then change the default location for iTunes files to your external drive.  Then import the MP3 files from the external drive into the empty iTunes database through the iTunes import facility.
If you screw up the timing of the import and find you have multiple iTunes directories (instead of just the default location), then iTunes has a new feature to consolidate all iTunes MP3 files back into the central default location.  In iTunes, FILE, LIBRARY, ORGANIZE LIBRARY, then CONSOLIDATE FILES.
To change the default directory for MP3 files, in Tunes go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED and then CHANGE the location to where you want the Itunes MP3 files to be located (including the iTunes subdirectory under which all the artist directories are held.  Mine are on the F: drive or whatever your computer states is your drive assignment for the external drive.
Note iTunes 10.5 has many problems that Apple hopefully are working on....we seem to have gone backwards on working components in this iCloud based release.  So maybe keep on using old computer until 10.6 is released.

  • Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk

I have a Network Drive where I'm used to putted all my iMovie08 files.
I'm start using iMovie09 and i'm no longer able to have my *files/library in a network drive*. Did apple remove this functionality? If this is true this is unbelievable because now a days everything goes to network storage. On iTunes i can have my library virtually anywhere. I need to have the same behavior when i'm using iMovie.
    Can someone help me?
    with my best regards,
    Paulo

Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk
If you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk, you can move your stored video in your Event Library to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer with a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
You can also copy Events to another hard disk. You might do this, for example, if you want to create a duplicate copy of your video library or an Event on a friend’s hard disk.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    - If i understood correctly, the solution you propose will replace completely my hard disk library with NAS location.
    - What i need (because when i'm travelling i dont have my NAS) is to have both. My hard disk library and the ability to copy/move (drag & drop within iMovies09 ) events and projects to my NAS at my description as i use to do on iMovies08.
And yes all my NAS locations appears with and yellow flag on iMovies09.
    best regards,

  • If I put my I tunes library in my external hard disk can I still share it with all the accounts of my Mac?

If I put my I tunes library in my external hard disk can I still share it with all the accounts of my Mac?

    Hello there, Gnorra.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews how to share your music in iTunes with multiple users on the same computer:
iTunes: How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203
If you're using Mac OS X, follow these steps:
    Quit iTunes.
Go to your iTunes Media folder. By default, it's in ~/Music/iTunes. (This folder may be named iTunes Music if you created your iTunes library in iTunes 9 or earlier.)
Note: "~" represents your Home folder. Other users on your computer can't access these locations.
Drag the iTunes Media folder to a public location. For example, you could move it to the Public folder in your Home folder (~/Public) or to a location outside your Home folder that other users can access (/Users/Shared).
Important: Don't move the iTunes folder, the iTunes library file, or the iTunes library.xml file.
    Open iTunes.
    Choose iTunes > Preferences.
    Click Advanced.
    Click the Change button.
In the window that opens, go to your iTunes Media folder.
    Click Choose or Open.
Repeat these steps for each user that you want to share music with. If multiple users on your computer are storing music in the same public folder, duplicate song files may appear if a user imports music from a CD that another user already imported.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

    Pedro.

  • Can I store my Aperture library on an external Hard Disk?

I have a MacBook Pro with very few free space on its internal hard drive. My Aperture library is getting very heavy and i would like to move my Aperture library to an external HD. I know that you can keep files where they are and see them in your aperture library, but the thing i'm trying to do is to STORE AND OPEN MY APERTURE LIBRARY (.APLIBRARY FILE) FROM AN EXTERNAL HARD DISK. Is this possible?

It is possible to put the Aperture library on an external HD as long as the HD is formatted correctly see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
However keep in mind that depending on the HD type and the way it is connected to your Mac performance may be an issue. For the best possible outcome the external drive should have a large cache, high RPM and be connected via firewire.
The other option to explore is to put the masters on an external drive and keep the library on the internal. This will give you relatively good performance using a standard USB drive.

  • Hi there, My Hard Disk space on the Mac Book is running low, I found about 105gigs in Back Ups, after I moved my ballooning Aperture Library to an external hard disk.  Can you help?

Just checked on Lion - somehow I have over 100gigs in Back Ups, but much less in pictures.  I moved Itunes, Aperture Libraries to my external hard Disk.  Still running low on the 250 gigs space.  Any tips on how I can free this are much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Did you actually move / delete the data on your HDD?
When you click and drag to an external drive, it automatically copies instead of moves.
What are these backups & their location?
You could try and app similar to WhatSize.

  • How do I import an old iphoto library from an external hard disk while keeping my editing and organization in tact?

I am running iPhoto '08 on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel C2D (MacBook Pro 3,1). I backed up my hard drive contents onto an external hard drive, then formatted my computer and installed Mountain Lion. I then re-installed iPhoto '08 and ran all the updates. Now, I would like to import my old library from the external disk onto my computer without losing my editing and organization; however, when I select "import to library" from iPhoto, the old iPhoto library is not a selectable option.
I know how to "show package contents" and import directly from the Original and Modified folders, but I don't want to lose my organization. Can I simply drag the content of those folders into my new Original and Modified folders? Will iPhoto read that correctly?
I tried to open the old library from the external disk, thinking to export them all to a folder and import from there, but that just opened my new library and none of the old photos were imported or available.
I'm running out of ideas and would appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!!

    You don't import it.
Just drag the iphoto Library from the external to the Pictures Folder.
    Then open it:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Photos app in my mac is not able to open the iPhoto library from my external hard disk.

I am using iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) OS 10.10.3. i have 2 iPhoto library one on my Mac HD and the other on my External HD which i primarily use and which has all the latest photos in it. Now with the new update to photos app in Mac i am not able to open the iPhoto library from my external HD. I get the following error message please help.

i am not able to open the iPhoto library from my external HD
How is the external HD formatted? Is the filesystem MAcOS Extended (Journaled) as necessary?
Is theHD directly connected or by a networked connection?
Have you tried to set the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag?
See how to prepare the drive for storing an iPhoto Library on it in this document: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
Which version of iPhoto created the library? If it was iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, download and run the iPhoto Library upgrader.

  • Problems with iPhoto after exporting library to external hard disk

    Hello all,
I am using iPhoto 8 on an iBook G4. I recently attempted to back up my iPhoto library to an external hard disk. I did this by dragging the iPhoto library to the external hard disk. I did not delete the library on my own computer. Since I've done this, iPhoto has not been problematic. For instance, when I attempt to open an event on my computer, I can not see the thumbnails of all the photo's in the event - iPhoto will display each individual photo in sequence. If I want to print a picture, I have to export the entire event - I can't just drag the thumbnail to my desktop. Also, when I attempt to upload new pictures from my camera it produces an error.
Does anyone know what might be going on? I need to be able to access my photo's, so can anyone give me some advice on how to fix whatever I've done?
Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

    Gina2008
iPhoto will display each individual photo in sequence.
There's a slider lower right of the iPhoto Window - drag it left.
Why are you exporting to Print?
when I attempt to upload new pictures from my camera it produces an error.
    What does the error say?
    As for accessing your pics:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Moving a music library from one external hard drive  / disk to another

My music library is already on an external hard drive and I want to move it to another external hard drive (along with the music filkes). I have follwed the standard setps of chaning the itunes folder location, keeping my itunes folder organised etc. When I come to consolidate my library it doesnt find anything or copy anything accross? Is it just looking on my MAC drive do you think? How can I get it to look on my 1st external hard disk?
Getting fed up with this now - must be the 4th time I've had to move libraries from one machine / disk to another and each time I always end up having to re rate music, or have lots of duplicates etc.

  • Itunes library on external hard disk

I have my itunes library on an external hard disk and use two laptops to access the library. It works fine but when I add new music it only shows on the laptop I used to add the music. The only way I can view it on both laptops is by using the add folder command within itunes.
Is there anyway of getting the library to update itself on both laptops to ensure both laptops view the same music all the time?

Why not move your itunes library ITL file onto the exHD?
Then when you add music to it, the actual music file plus the database itunes uses will be available to each laptop.
For example, say laptop #2 has the most recent additions. Close itunes. Find the ITL file, on XP the default path is
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Drag that over to your exHD.
Now start itunes again, but press *and hold* the shift key. Choose the exHD copy of the ITL when prompted. Now close itunes, connect the exHD t laptop #2 and open itunes again using that shift method.

  • Itunes for window on an external hard disk

I have my itunes library on an external hard disk and it is working fine but I am about to get a new computer. What is the easiset way to get my new installation of itunes to view the library on the external hard disk.
If anybody knows the answer can they please reply to this, thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

    - Save the following files from the old PC:
-- 1) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
-- 2) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    - Copy these files to your new PC somewhere safe
    - Install iTunes on the new PC
    - Configure your ExHD to attach to the new PC as the same drive letter as on the old PC
    - Attach the ExHD to the new PC
    - Copy the two saved database files (XML & ITL) into the 'My Music\iTunes' folder of the new PC - replace the smaller, new files that are there
    - Open iTunes
Your new PC's Library should be a clone of the old PC's. These are high-level instructions. If you feel you need more, post back.

  • Restoring aperture library from an external hard drive?

I have a major issue with my aperture library. It crashed completely and it turns out that the back up I have on my time machine was corrupted because of a hard disk error. I found this out after buying a new mac and while trying to migrate the old library to the new mac. I kept getting error message -36.
The situation is now as follows:
    - I have the full Aperture library on an external hard disk that I recovered from my crashed mac
    - I can acces and copy the indivial pictures via the master folder, but cannot copy the entire library. If I try this it give me an error (-36)
    - I can see the individual photo files via (click, 'view content'), and can copy them in groups, but not as a whole. It turns out that If I try to copy the master folder, there are some corrupt images there and the copy exercise then quits automatically. It does not allow me to delete the corrupt images.
    - when i try to restore the the library via aperture (so opening it with aperture) it keeps saying that my 'permissions' are not set correctly.
Does anyone have an idea to copy the library (24gb worth of photos) without having to go in and copy group by group eliminating the corrupt files?
There must be some way to rebuild the library on my new mac, from the hard disk, as I can see and access the individual pictures?
    Thanks!
    Alco
    - My old mac ran on Snow Leopard.

+the problem is this, almost every time i start my imac, launch itunes and then play a track purchased from an old itunes account, it keeps asking me to authorize that account. even though i have had previous macs containing itunes content on this old account, it has always played with no issues at all. now then... to try and remedy this, i first of all uninstalled itunes COMPLETELY and reinstalled. this seemed to do the trick but after a few days, it all started again.+
Did you unauthorize your old Mac and authorize this one? You only get a maximum of 5 machines, so maybe you're past that or haven't authorized the new one - to do that, open iTunes, click on Store in Menu. Now, there should be two options: authorize or de-authorize this computer. Click on authorize and report back with whatever message you get.
+on to my second issue, Aperture. the app works fine except, like itunes it constantly asks me to enter the serial number from the box. please note that this is a legitimate copy purchased from the apple online store and i used it for about a year on my old macbook pro with only having to enter the serial during the initial installation.+
The Aperture SLA states that you can install it on two computers - a desktop and a laptop. I don't know if there is any protection embedded in the DVD (if you've already had it installed twice), but if the issue persists, I'd contact the Apple store (since you said that is where you bought it) and ask - or, if you're covered by warranty, simply call Apple. Or, if not, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar and get answers there. It is perfectly legal to install it again as long as it no longer exists on the old machine - and I don't think it has anything to do with hardware, sounds more like a glitch. Oh, and have you tried to install it fresh, enter the serial, open it to see if it works and then copy over the library?

  • External Hard Disk disconnected while rendering, project disappeared now with a yellow exclamation sign triangle. Is there a way to recover it?

    Hello,
I was working on a project located at a library in an external hard disk. The external hard disk was disconnected while FCPX was rendering. Once it was connected back there's no project in the event, I can't find it in Finder nor anywhere else and I get a yellow triangular exclamation sign icon. Has the project disappeared? Is there a way to find it? I have no backup
Recovering this is quite important for me.
I'd greatly appreciate any help or tips.
