Library on External HD, how to play music without locating?

I have an external hard drive that I keep all my music on to clear up space on my hard drive as well as having my music on the go.
But when I want to do things like update my iPod or even play music on my computer(with the external connected, of course), I have to go and locate each song every time I want to play/use it.
Is there a way for itunes to sync up with my external so I don't have to locate each song every time.

I unchecked the box that says create a copy in itunes, however i created a playlist, dragged the files to it and played them. When i deleted the playlist, the songs were still listed in my main library, they wont play....b/c the files not there, so why is even listed and how do i prevent that from happening in the future?????

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

First, a brand new drive is likely formatted for use with Windows. You need to reformat it for use with Mac.

Second, you are better off moving the whole iTunes library to the external drive, not just the media.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

I just updated my iPhone 4 and now can't figure out how to play music or videos on my apple tv

iPhone 4 can AirPlay audio just fine, I'd forgotten that it can't do screen mirroring. It's been so long since I had my iPhone 4 but I'm certain that some apps will allow video output over AirPlay (which is not the same as screen mirroring). The stock iOS Photo and Video apps could stream pictures and video to ATV, but true mirroring of everything you see on the screen is not supported on iPhone 4. It isn't iOS 7 that took away this capability, it is a capability that has always been limited with iPhone 4 (and earlier).
If you are sure that your old 3G can output video over AirPlay, which specific apps? Those same apps should work on the iPhone 4, even with iOS 7.

I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence .... but just in case anyone hasn't yet figured it out, here's how to play music from your iPod on a computer that does not have iTunes installed:
On your computer, connect the iPod to iTunes and click on it's name. Then under the general tab, check "allow disk use". Your iPod will then act as a USB hard drive and will then show up as a drive in My Computer. Now all you need to do is to create a Music folder on it and then copy all your music to it!
Your iPod's USB hard drive should show up under My Computer on most Windows computers. Therefore providing the computer has Windows Media Player installed, you will be able to play all your music on it! This saves you having to bother with portable/travel speakers, some of which sound terrible anyway!

Mains lead for the computer is a bit of a problem on the bus though!

Not sure what you mean by this? If you've downloaded a Movie, then it will be installed on your iPad (if downloaded to your iPad of course) and it will play from the iPad as is.
If this doesn't help, please provide more info about what you are trying to do.

Really strange problem you have there. I have a few questions though.
Please try again and try to make the phone as a new without restoringen with you iCloud-data or backup-data from iTunes. Maybe it is something wrong with the data (strange).
Anyway, i think you should call Apple Support or visit an Apple Store, don't forgot to make a Genius Bar reservation.

I have an extensive collection of fine music on CDs and DVD. How do I play music on my iMac 27" with Mavericks without having to buy more unneeded discs from iTunes? Find nothing in Apple "help" not my book on Mavericks. Apple doesn't have as much interest in selling fine computing equipment as it does selling goods from the iTunes store.

Not true, personally I have never purchased any music from the iTunes Store and have over a 160GB of music from my CD collection in iTunes.

You can easily Import your CD collection into iTunes.
If you have a newer iMac that does not have a built-in Superdrive, you can use most any USB External Optical DVD Drive to Import your CDs into iTunes.
You may even be able to use your PCs drive, see > DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc
Or move the music from your PC, see > Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac

I was trying to see if the music feature will play my songs or if I can import downloaded files from the net to itunes and if that will play in the background. I have an audio program that can send sound files to email and was trying to figure out how, similarly, to get this play in the background while I do things too. The only way to get content into the Music app is via iTunes store downloads or syncing with itunes on a computer. You will need to find a third party media player such as VLC (whick integrates with DropBox and GoogleDrive, if that appeals to you).

The situation is this: I can play music in Ryhthmbox that is on my hard disk (copied over from other distro) and am listening to jazz as I write this), but I can not put a CD into my dvd drive and play a music CD. I would like to rip it to disk using Rhythmbox as I have done in the past but it seems impossible in Arch. I am using Xfce4.
If I insert a music CD just now, Totem starts up and then tells me that there is no media in drive for device '/dev/sr0'. Well, how did it know I inserted a CD in the drive for crying out loud?
Any ideas out there?

The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0
(Or just set the fader manually in MS)
