Library on hard drive - dissapeared images...

Hey all
Have been using iphoto for some time and started to run out of space on my powerbook - so bought a portable hard drive and moved library on there.
Worked perfectly for 6 months, but a week ago created a second library on my powerbook for when i don't have the drive. Different name. Swapping between them using the option key on loading up - again perfect.
But in the last few days when i go to switch back to the hard drive version, I select the file - see that it is 40gb, click to open, BUT NONE OF THE PICTURES OR ALBUMS APPEAR...
I have a backup, but will have lost some current work in progress. Any ideas??
No error message, but it has said that thumbs needed updating which i said fine to...
Cheers

Why might that have happened in the first place?
A damaged database file occurs when the app is interrupted while writing to the db. A crash, a force quit, minor hard disk issues... any of these can cause the problem.
Is it alright having two libraries?
Perfectly, iPhoto Library Manager makes managing this very easy - including moving pics/albums/events between the Libraries.
do you personally use Aperture - as the reason behind all of this is that i am currently swapping between the two programs.
I use Aperture, but my family prefer iPhoto for the simplicity. So I process my own RAW's in Aperture then output the jpegs for the iPhoto Library.
Were it not for the others in the house I would have migrated over completely by now. Aperture can do everything that Aperture can, and then a whole lot more.
I have a backup from 2 weeks ago, but have done at least 15 shoots since then - if i take the file to overwrite from the backup - what will happen to the images from this period?
If you overwrite the db file then iPhoto will simply not know about those other shoots. So drag the event folders from the iPhoto Package File to the desktop and re-import them.
If I take the opportunity now to migrate everything to Aperture - can i do that whilst keeping all the originals and modified intact
Yes, use the Import iPhoto Library command.

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

  • I accidentally made my hard drive an image of Mac OS X 10.6.3

I accidentally made my hard drive an image of Mac OS X 10.6.3, and I cant erase the hard drive anymore. Please tell me there is a way to be able to erase the image on the hard drive and put it back to the original settings?

    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You will have to restore your deleted files from a backup. If you don't have a backup, then they are lost.

  • Is there a way to recover library following hard drive replacement. No backup

Is there a way to recover library following hard drive replacement? No back up.

vazandrew pretty much laid it out for you. At least you've got 8GB of your library on your ipod, so it's not all gone - depends how much you want what is on there, whether you feel like buying a 3rd party ipod manager program.
Sounds like a hard lesson in making backups. : (

  • Restoring iTunes library after hard drive crash

The hard drive on my Macbook pro (mid-2009) crashed. I took it to the genius bar for a diagnostic. The drive was physically fine so they wiped it and reinstalled Mavericks, which is now running 10.9.4. I am restoring user files from Time Machine individually to keep things clean. Hooray!
I'm now running iTunes 10.3.1. Years ago, I placed the iTunes library in Users>Shared on the hard drive, so my wife could access the files when she logged in. We don't need to do that now, so today I dragged all the music files from Time Machine to the "Music" section on the iTunes window.
They seem to have installed and indexed fine, but I lost some of the original data--like date added and numbers of plays--which would be nice to have. (Then all now read as installed today with zero plays.) My playlists are all gone as well; I'd like to have them back.
Is there any way to restore the music so those things stay intact, by basically making my library the way it was?
I considered dragging the entire set of folders over from the Shared section of Time Machine, but was afraid the music would not index, and the folder structure and nomenclature was different (for example, it had iTunes Music instead of iTunes media and there were a couple other anomalies). I imagine this is because the Shared library was set up under a different version of iTunes.
I hope this doesn't further complicate things but my user name was changed at the genius bar (from what it was prior to crash); they added my last name to my user name. I didn't notice till I got home. So far I have had no trouble accessing the files I have dragged in (Numbers, Word, etc), but don't know if the permissions on the music files might be affected.
    All help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Trying to locate/reload my ringtones after hard drive re-imaged

My hard drive was recently re-imaged. Prior to this, I copied my entire music folder to an external hard drive.
After reinstalling iTunes, I recreated my iTunes Library, and my music was back. I also sync'd my iPhone to Outlook and was able to recreate my calendar, contacts, etc. However, my ringtones did not appear in iTunes. They were still on my phone.
I tried to transfer purchases, but the ringtones didn't transfer. Then I tried to sync it with the iPhone. (MISTAKE) and now the ringtones are gone from the iPhone.
Can I get these back somehow? Where in the library are the ringtones located? I have a few database files still on my external hard drive, and I'm hoping one of these has the ringtones I'm missing. But, I'm afraid to recreate the Library again, causing something else to be overwritten or disappear.
It's probably better to just re-create and re-pay for the ringtones since there were only 3 of them.
I also keep getting the error that the iPhone is currently sync'd to another library. (the old one from before the pc was re-imaged??)
    Thanks.

Are you referring to the serial number? If so make sure you're entering it correctly. Given the length of the serial number and the similarities between O and 0 and 1 and l it's easy to make a mistake.
See Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and if that doesn't help try Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers for a way to get a new number.
    good luck

  • How to get pics from iphone to iphoto library on hard drive

Hi there. I saved my photo library to an EHD. I pointed iphoto to open the library from EHD. Normally when I connect my iphone to my macbook pro, iphoto just pops up asking to import the pics from my phone. But now it doesn't do that and it doesn't show my phone on the left pane of i photo. How do I get my pics and videos from my iphone into the iphoto library i saved on my ehd? Thanks!

    Greetings,
Make sure your external hard drive is Mac formated and has a reasonable amount of space available.
--- Side note:  If you haven't already, you should tell TimeMachine to backup that external hard drive as Time Machine only backs up your internal hard drive by default.
    Try:
    1. Install all software updates for both your computer and your iPhone and turn both on and off and re-plug the cable between them.
    2. Try importing your pictures and movies using Image Capture found in Macintosh HD > Applications.
-- If Image Capture sees your iPhone when iPhoto does not, try creating a new iPhoto library on your internal drive to see if that library can see your iPhone.  This is done by launching iPhoto while holding down the option key.
If those steps do not help, follow this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3195
    Cheers.

  • Backing up iphoto library from hard drive to external

When backing up my iphoto library from my mac to an external hard drive I always seem to have to copy the enitre library.  The way I go about it is I open a Finder window from my mac and then open a finder window for the external hard drive. Then I click and drag the iphoto library from my mac to the hard drive window.
Is there a way to just copy the most recent events?
Thanks for your time with advice.

    Greetings,
The iPhoto Library is a package file so the computer treats it as one single file. It has no way to tell that "X" images are different between the library on your computer and the one on your external as they are all part of one large file.
What you are looking for is called an "incremental backup".  You have a system for doing just this built into your computer, called Time Machine.  Read more about Time Machine here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
-- Note: Time Machine will (unless you tell it otherwise), backup everything on your computer, not just your iPhoto Library (which is generally a good idea anyways).
    Cheers.

  • Restore saved iPhoto library after hard drive repair

My hard drive crashed and Apple were kind enough to repair it although it happened 1 week after the extended warranty expired. I was able to save the hard drive files to an external drive just before it died, but now when I try and import the iPhoto library back into the newly repaired computer one of 2 things happen: The photos begin to transfer and then the application (iPhoto) unexpectedly quits, or, the blue bar at the bottom says Working and nothing happens for as long as 10 minutes.
I would really appreciate some help as I no longer have covered support. One of the photo text files may be corrupted. How do I identify the problem file?
    Thanks very much,
    Colin Sieff

That's because importing from another iPhoto Library folder isn't the way to restore an iPhoto Library. I'm surprised you were able to do it without a bunch of warning dialogs.
If you still have the original iPhoto Library folder intact, the thing to do is restore it as I've described earlier. If you have sufficient disk space, quit iPhoto and drag the existing iPhoto Library folder from Pictures to the desktop. Then drag your backup iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, and the only thing left to do is to start iPhoto. If all's well, move the desktop copy of the iPhoto Library folder to the trash, then empty the trash.

  • Restore Library after hard drive format

I had to reformat my Windows hard drive and, of course, then I had to restore my Itunes Library. My music files are stored in a different HD so, I didnt have to back them up. I restored my library using the method described in this page article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313.
It worked fine, but now all my play counts are gone. How can I have them back? I have all my playlists, even the song ratings, but no play counts. Did I do something wrong? I haven't sync'ed my iPod yet, som I still have my play counts in it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I tunes library / external hard drive / apple tv

I have copied my itunes library on to an external hard drive as the library is to large for my macbook.(I am adding my dvd collection to itunes to 'tidy up').
I have connected to apple tv no problem at all.
My problem is that if i want to watch a film from the library on the extarnal drive i have to copy the file into itunes on my hard drive. I dont want to keep doing this.
Is there a way that I can make apple tv or itunes see itunes on the external drive rather than on the hard drive?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tegbert

I posted an issue about this very same thing.  My iTunes media is on an external drive as well and it seems like all the trouble started to happen right after I upgraded to iTunes 10.4. I have a case open with Apple on it right now and it has gone all the way up to the engineer level.
I have replaced my external drive along with the USB cable and even plugged the drive into a different USB port.
If I copy one of the movies to the internal drive I do not have an issue so...  it seems like the trouble has to do with the content being on an external drive.  Apple does support this because they even have an article explaining how to do it properly: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
My entire Mac locks up when this happens so I have to hold the power button and restart the entire system.

  • Restoring iTunes Library after hard drive failure.

So a few days ago I had to re partition my hard drive (erase all the data) because I received an unfixable problem from Finder error 10810. The problem created overlapping files on my hard drive which was able to be solved by doing a repair disk from Disk Utility. So I made sure I had a backup of all my information on my iMac, and erased the hard drive and re-installed Snow Leopard. After the installation was complete I began restoring all the files I had from Time Machine, but when I got to my iTunes library I received the error message saying that "You cannot access the iTunes folder because you are not authorized". So if anyone can help me out with this that would be great, I tried calling Apple but i'm not willing to pay the ridiculous $50 fee to speak to a human being.

I'm trying it file by file, because I don't need everything back on my hard drive but things like my iTunes Library I want. And I did use a different username when doing the setup assistant, but I thought about that and went back and re-named my current account and then went into my backup files and set all the sharing permissions to Read and Write for all accounts.

  • How to restore library after hard drive reformat?

Hello, I am going to reformat my Mac Pro's boot drive, and I want to make sure my iTunes library remains intact (I'm using iTunes 12).
I keep my iTunes music files on a 2nd internal hard drive, in a folder that I titled "iTunes Folder". I also plan to reformat this internal hard drive.
I have backups of both drives on an external hard drive. I'm assuming that in order to restore my iTunes library, playlists, etc., to their current state, I simply need to a) restore the user/Music/iTunes folder to its current state and b) restore the "iTunes Folder" to my 2nd internal drive. Is that correct? Or is there a different way that it should be done?
    Thanks.

  • Restoring iPhoto library after hard-drive crash

I lost my entire hard drive on my iMac and had to physically replace it. I recovered all my files from Carbonite, but didn't notice until it was too late that there were errors restoring my iPhoto library. When I open iPhoto '11, the iPhoto library doesn't show any of the 43,000 photos (that includes thumbnails, "faces" files, etc. that were on my old library).
If I search my "Macintosh HD" drive for all ".jpg" files, I can see them all. They are all in a file path that is "Pictures/iPhotoLibrary/Masters."
But when I open iPhoto and select "import to library" and then search for the photos or the Masters folder, it doesn't see it. When I try to do a work-around by selecting the files individually and telling the computer to use iPhoto to open them, it says that I can't open the files because they're already part of the library.
I can't seem to find a solution to this exact question. Any ideas out there?

You can try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
But if this fails you'll need to accept that your back up is faulty and you'll need to make a new Library and start over from scratch.

    TD
