"Library on locked volume" err with DVD or readonly dmg

Not so much a question, but warning to others that you can no longer open any iPhoto Library on read-only media (such as dvd-burned from iPhoto 9.4), or a read only dmg. You get a warning about a "locked volume" and only choice is to quit. True at least since iPhoto'11 (version 9.4.x on 10.8) and with iPhoto 9.5 (on 10.9), even tho the Help and other support docs incorrectly say you can view an iPhoto library on a dvd (as detailed below).
Got a new macbook with 128g SSD, so no room for one huge iPhoto Library that takes 40g. Started a new smaller iPhoto Library as work-around. I was hoping to keep the huge iPhoto-Library read-only: then we could keep a copy on both of the external hard-drives, and no other backup would be needed. But iPhoto actually can no-longer open read-only libraries, such as those burned to a DVD: HT5664 warns you must copy it to your hard drive. Any old info you find saying you can open a read-only library is incorrect: you get a fatal error about a “locked” library. For example, *ALL* the following are absolutely wrong: PH15265 ( iPhoto 9.5: View photo libraries on a CD or DVD), PH2507 (iPhoto '11: View photo libraries on a CD or DVD), and Help in iPhoto 9.5 (10.9) and 9.4 aka iPhoto’11 (10.8). The help incorrectly says: "If you’ve burned an entire iPhoto library to a CD or DVD (using the iPhoto burn function), you can view the library in iPhoto without importing all the photos. You can’t make changes to a photo library you’re viewing on a disc, but you can import (copy) photos and albums from it into the current iPhoto library." (Not!)
Since the 40gig iPhoto Library has to be read-write, will try to keep it on a 64gig usb3-ssd (“ssd-on-a-stick” thumb-drive) such as SDCZ80-064G-GAM46 about $44 currently. Note: this is not flash-storage, it literally uses SSD for storage. Should outlast iPhoto, which Apple is phasing out, replacing it with Photo due in 2015, and iPhoto is already gone from ios8 (Sept 2014).
Usually such usb-sticks are automatically excluded from Time Machine backups, so it would need to be included (by removing from list of excluded items.) And, since Time Machine can fail, for years we’ve also recommended use of an independent backup method called CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). CCC can be scheduled to automatically do a weekly backup the usb3-ssd, when it and the target appear. And CCC can check and warn that iPhoto is not to be run during the backup: this should help prevent corruption of the iPhoto-Library database. The iPhoto-help similarly mentions that Time Machine cannot do a full backup of the library while iPhoto is running.

This is correct and by the way that device is a flash drive. That's what the Amazon page you linked to calls it:

Any large capacity flash drive will do the job but remember that it must be formatted formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled.

I don't know if this will work, but I'd try logging in to an admin account, going to your main library (not user library), opening it, opening Application Support, selecting iPhoto, hold down the command key and press i, click on the lock in the lower left, entering the password and making sure you have Read & Write privileges for System and Admin.

Sessions hangs with library cache lock

Our workflow session yesterday hanged on a particular step the session was waiting on a library cache lock (by using query select event,p1,p2 from v$session where sid=<my_sid>;)

How to detect the object or session in a database with library cache lock

Hi Everyone,
We've been experiencing frequent and high time waits for this event: library cache lock.
- What causes this?
- Is there a way to detect the object being locked?
(this doesnt show up in V$LOCK)
- Is there a way to detect the session that is causing the lock? aka blocking session?
(I can detect the objects being blocked, they show up in v$session)

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

I use an external HD (WD My Passport) to store my iPhoto photos. When I backed these up on another EHD (WD My Passport Ultra), thumbnails, and a lot of the photos did not copy (show "!"). Now 1st HD says its on a locked volume? What happened?

Right before the coping finished (started with a 40 hour copy time (I know it's estimated), and with about 30 minutes left, a window popped up and said there was a name conflict between the two HD. Then it wrapped things up in a minute or so. We had formatted the new EHD for Mac. What happened?

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).

Thank you so much for beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!

Please bear with me as I am very new to this subject.
1: Using a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.5 and it is WiFi connected to a Time Capsule.
2: Overnight I have done a complete back-up. Checked the data files and all correct.
3: I can open the files on the TC except for the iPhoto Library as I want to check visually that they are there. All 2,388.
4: The iPhone Library on the TC will not allow me to look in.
5: the iPhoto Library on the MBA allows me access and I can view etc all the 2,388.
Q1: So why can I not look into the TC's iPhone Library? Or how do I open that library so I can look in?
Q2: how can I export data back from the TC to the MBA if ever I needed to do that?

Couple of things to try:
Restart your mac and try launch iPhoto again.
If that fails:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a file called ‘iPhoto’Lock.data or similar. Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If not: Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it's on an External Disk, what format is that?

"iPhoto Library is locked" error message

I'm trying to move all pictures from one account on my computer to my admin. account so I can delete the other account. I moved iPhoto to the Drop Box on the first account, but then when I go to open it on my Admin account it comes up with an error message : "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." How do I unlock it?
Am I even going about getting the pictures to my Admin account the right way? Please help!!!

Class library is locked, but shouldn't be

I've run into some particularly weird behavior of LabVIEW 2011 SP1:
I have a base class, "Scanner". Child classes will generally have a member VI called "Scan loop.vi", so Scanner has a member method "Scan loop template.vi". This template can be used to make creating a child class easier.
I created a child class, "MCL Fast Scanner". I copied the "Scanner : Scan loop template" member VI, and added it to "MCL Fast Scanner", renamed as "MCL Fast Scanner : Scan loop.vi".
Now, for some strange reason, when I open the project, the "MCL Fast Scanner.lvclass" library appears locked, with LabVIEW indicating that "this LabVIEW class is loaded in multiple application instances". I'm pretty sure it isn't (note: I'm note using any real-time targets).
I found a way to unlock the library: simply open "MCL Fast Scanner : Get scan loop.vi", which happens to contain a Static VI Reference to "MCL Fast Scanner : Scan loop.vi". Opening this VI mysteriously makes the library lock disappear.
I've tried to summarize this in the picture below:

Either it's because I originally messed around with copying this template VI from the base class. This would seem similar to a post from a few years ago, mentioning an eerily similar issue. However, I afterwards tried re-creating "Scan loop.vi" from scratch, and that didn't solve anything.
There's something strange going on with the Static VI Reference.
I created the "MCL Fast Scanner" child class using the LVOOP Assistant; could that have botched something?

Actually, there are more than one CAR related to the auto populating feature opened at the moment
Ealier in the development of his project, Onno ran into some corruption of his project (for reasons only him can give you). He thought he had resolved -most of- them. Thus, the locked library issue he still have at the moment is probably a consequence of a previous corruption. Because of that, I cannot give you a precise CAR reference, but for sure, the R&D is aware of some issue with the auto-populating folder. This one (CAR#347498) is probably intersting to follow though.
