Library on SDXC card

I just ordered a new Macbook Pro 15" and shoud be here Friday!  I was wondering if anyone has used the sdxc card slot to contain an entire iPhoto library?
I am thinking of getting a 64GB card and either running iTunes or iPhoto exclusively from the card.  (more than likely iPhoto as I don't use it as much).
The main reason is that I opted for a 128GB SSD for the primary partition and am looking to conserve where possible.
Any thoughts or experiences are greatly appreciated.

What 'slow' means depends on several factors, including what your expectations are. If your MBP's card reader is on the PCIe bus, it may not be so bad.
Read this old review
<http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4258>
to understand how to judge SD performance relative to hard disk (keep in mind they didn't yet have Class 10 or XC on the market back then).
Then read
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553#4>
to see how to check the max speed supported by your card reader.
IMHO, in the end, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Get the fastest, meanest SD card you can afford and test iPhoto Library on it. If performance is acceptable, fine. If not, you'll find other stuff to put there, never worry.
Btw, if you do try, it would be nice if you posted back here what card you got and how it worked out.

  • Sdxc card for iTunes library

Can I place my iTunes library onto a SDXC card and use this on a MacBook Pro 2012?
I read the thread where an iPhoto library on the SDXC card is very slow.
Is the same true for the iTunes library for music and less frequent movie playing?

You might also want to ask your question over at the iTunes forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_mac - someone there may have tried what you're wanting to do and be willing to share their experiences.
As for myself, I stored my iTunes on an external FW400 drive for years and never had a problem. You might want to look at an external drive solution, as well.
    Good luck,

  • Can i use SDXC card as an external hard drive?

I have a mid 2011 macbook air with 4GB of space. I have to constantly delete things off of my mac because i do not have enough space. I see that i have a SDXC card slot on my macbook i was wondering could i buy a 32gb SDXC card and use it like an external hard drive so i wouldn't have to keep worrying about space on my macbook?

I think you are confused. Your 4 GBs of space refers to your RAM or memory. Your SSD is not the same. If you only have 4 GBs left on it, then you need to start transferring data to an external drive. An SDXC card is storage space like the SSD or a hard drive. It does not expand RAM.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Can I access a sdxc card just like an external hd?

I just got a new macbook pro (woot!!) and it has a sdxc card slot.  I was wondering if I can access it just like an external hard drive?  I do a lot of music production work and have a lot of sample libraries, it would be great if I could just use a 128GB sdxc card instead of having to lug around an external.
Is it faster since its solid state memory?  Will this work?
    Thanks
    GW

I'm not sure it will be faster.. it really depends on the speed of the card itself. The highest class rating is 10.. which simply means 10mb/sec read/write speed (I'm pretty sure is 10mb/sec, it may be 15..).. however many cards boast faster performance which is why you'll see 133x 150x 200x 400x even 600x, the price tag will reflect the performance difference. Most of these speeds will be comperable to usb 2.0, but slower than usb 3.0, firewire 800 and thunderbolt. It is flash media.. but it doesn't necessarily mean you will be operating at ssd speeds. If you're using it for your sampling library you should be fine.

  • Run Windows 8.1 Pro on a SDXC card via VMware Fusion

    Hi everyone,
I'm kinda new to the whole Mac story.
Have been using iPhone and iPad from day one, but never could get myself to go off Windows.
    Well, a few weeks ago I bought myself a 13.3" MBP (Mid 2014 - 11.1 model).
It's the retina one with a 256GB SSD in it.
    Now my question is...
I have a license from work for VMware Fusion 7, and I need some programs to run on Windows.
But I don't wan't to partition my drive and run it via bootcamp, I want to keep my Mac clean.
Does anyone have experience or know if I can run this on a SDXC card?
I would use a 128GB SDXC card with 60MB/s write and 80MB/s read.
Can I stick this SD into the slot, install Windows 8.1 Pro via Fusion on this card and let it run on a decent level?
    Thanks in advance,
    And with best regards,
    Sonicje

Thank you for the fast responds.
I took a look into it and you are right.
The read/write speed is much higher and cheaper.
But, like I said, I'm nog willing to share my drive with Windows.
So I'm going to buy a 64GB USB stick (less than 60 euro) and going to install it on that source.
With 64GB I've some extra space for the futher if I need to work with more Windows only programs.
    Thanks again for the advice!

  • How do I use an SDXC card with iPad 2?

Is the inability to recognize an SDXC card a limitation of the camera adapter or something inherent in iOS? Anybody know?

Not a perfect situation, but couldnt you transfer pictures from your camera to the iPad using the USB adapter?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) will not read an SD card in the SDXC card reader. Does anyone know whats going on?

Hi David.  I don't have as modern a Macbook Pro as you, mine is a 2012 model, but perhaps I can help.  I often find that my SD card will not load when I first insert it.  I have to remove it and then put it into the slot again firmly.
You also haven't posted any information about the SD card.  What size is it, do you know how it is formatted, has it worked in that same mac previously, where did it come from, does it currently work in another device (such as your camera)?  This sort of information will help to narrow down the problem.
If you post some more information I'm sure people will try to help you.  In the meantime, if you look at your post again you should see "More Like This" at the bottom of the page and you may find an answer in some of those related posts.
    Hope that helps.

  • Yoga 13 SDXC Card Shutsdown Computer and it cannot restart with card installed

    Hi,
I have read on the forum that people are using the SDXC cards with their Yoga 13's.
I have purchased a Sandisk 64Gb SDXC ExtremePro card but when I put it into the Card Reader a blue screen comes up saying " Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart." It also gives and error with this message saying: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (TosExt.Sys). It cannot restart again until I remove the card, the same thing happens in SAFE MODE also or if I try to start the computer with the card inserted already. The card is brand new and I bought it in a reputable shop. I have tested the card in a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and it works fine. I have also tried to insert a different standard SD card into the Yoga but the same thing happens. I have reinstalled the driver for the reader but the problem still remains. The OS is Windows 8 64 bit. The card is in ex FAT format and I re-formatted it again just to be safe but still no luck.
I was not able to find anything regarding this online but saw that some people here have similar problems.
I would really appreciate if someone could help or at least let me know if there is a way of contacting Lenovo about this problem, I see that they will only accept emails regarding the ThinkPad product line.
Thank you in advance and best regards to all!

I have also problems while inserting a sdcard but not on a Lenovo. I just give here what I observed but I have no direct solution
    1. I bought last year a Samsung chronos and it was impossible to put a sd card. Each time I get the blue screen with the message page_fault_in_non_paged_area (tosExt.sys). When I contacted Samsung they of course do not understand and suggest that I reinitilize completely the computer which I did. At this moment it was possible to insert a sd card without problem but as soon as I have installed my usual sotfwares it came back to the same situation : impossible to put a sd card.
    2. I bought meanwhile a second computer, an Asus Zen book, and got exactly the same problem. Both computer are operated under windows 8 but the upgrade 8.1 does not change anything.
    3. the only way I can read a sd card in both these computers is to use a USB adaptor. In this case there is no problem.
    4. I recently bought a Yoga pro 2 from Lenovo. Surprinsingly with the same kind of sofware installed, I can use directly a sd card.
This seems to be a tricky problem

  • IPad 4 with camera connection kit doesn't work with 64GB SDXC card on iOS 7.1.1

I have an iPad 4 and official Apple camera connection kit. Even though ios 7 was supposed to provide compatibility with SDXC cards there is obviously an issue. I'm using 64GB SDXC and 32GB SD cards - both Sandisck Extreme Pro with RAW Canon 5D Mark III files. The 32GB cards work fine - thumbnails appear quickly and pictures import fine. After inserting the 64GB cards thumbnail holders appear very slowly but the thumbnail images do not appear so I cannot import. I'm a pro photographer and I need this functionality so that I can show pictures to clients on location. Any ideas?

Are the photos on the 64GB card in RAW format? If so, this may apply.

  • SDHC extreme or SDXC card work in Portege R600

Does the R600 support the sandisk "extreme 30 MB" or the SDXC card?
I ask because they seem to the only ones with 64Gb capacity. I need the maximum additional capacity possible
    TIA/gary

    Hi
As far as I know the SD card reader supports the SD card up to 2GB, SDHC up to 16Gb and mini SD card (with adapter) up to 2GB.
I didnt find any details about the usage of bigger SDHC cards and I think you will have to test it yourself. But in my opinion there could be a problem using such cards!

  • Does the MBA 2012 support SDHC and SDXC Cards ?

In the store only SD-cards are mentioned in the tech-specs for the MBA.
In comparison to that : The specs for the MBP are talking about SDXC-card reader.
    Thx for your answers

The MBair supports SDXC cards at least back to 2011.  It's not mentioned in the store but is mentioned in the user manual.
    From the 2011 user manual:

  • Z30 - Music & Neutron App do not see music files in micro SDXC card now and then

I have my Z30 about a week now. So far so good. This morning, all of a sudden the native Music & Neutron App do not see the music files on the 64 GB micro SDXC card. The files are there when I checked with file management. I restarted a few times and the problem went away. I like to know if any one of you out there encountered this problem and how do you resolve it.
    Thanks.

hi i had the same problem i asked an expert and told me the connection between card and phone was not good at the moment took it out and put it back didnt have a problem ever since

  • HT4150 SDXC cards on Mac OS X version 10.5.8 can they be used

Can SDXC cards be used to transfer picture from onto the snow leopard 10.5.8 mini mac?

Just for clarity's sake, Mac OS X 10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is Mac OS X 10.6.x. It's often important, and features and capabilities differ between the two operating system versions.
    Regards.

  • I need to have OS 10.6.5 to read SDXC cards, but will my FCP 6.0.6 still run?

Please help someone with minimal tech knowledge:  Apparently I need to have OS 10.6.5 to read SDXC cards (from my Panasonic GH-2) , but will my Final Cut Studio 6.0.6 still run on the upgraded OS? I paid £1000 for it it only 4 years agao and it would be a real shame to have to buy a new one!
    Many thanks for any help.
    Dan.

Final Cut Studio 2 applications (including FCP 6) will run perfectly well on 10.6.
BTW, just to remind you that neither FCS 2 nor FCS 3 are supported any longer by Apple. So when you get a solid installation of FCS 2 on SL – after having run all your updates – take care good care of it.

  • Sandisk 64gb micro sdxc card works in 701

Following on from user Roveel's post about his use of this sdxc card in the N8 I got one for my new 701. Once formatted to Fat32 in my pc (used the same utility that Roveel used) the card works in the phone.
The phone saves pictures to the card, views them, and also plays back music stored on the card fine. The only bug I can find is that the phone will not format the card, fails with an error message. Formatting the card reduces the capacity a little to 59gb but that is still better than my old 32gb card. See picture attached.
Now running a 701, beautiful phone to handle and use...now that it has stopped sending my personal information to Nokia via 360Panel [rolls eyes]

    64 000 000 000 bytes isn't 64GB
it was some fight some years ago... i believe than we shoud try fight back again becouse
    64 000 000 000 bytes is:
    64 000 000 000 / 1024 = 62 500 000 KB
    62 500 000 / 1024 = 61 035 MB
    61 035 / 1024 = 59.6 GB
that is the reason of 59.4 GB
    i hope that explain
    but resuming it works
and i like this news, at least for my N8
waiting for my 808 PureVision (as soon sells begining)
