Library on two computers, want to pick a best of mix to Ipod

Hi there,
I'm a brandnew user of an Ipod. Since I have a Desktop at home with huge mass storage, my music library is quiet big.
I bought a laptop and I'm using it more often now.
Here is my question: On both Computers I do have different songs an I want to combine them on my Ipod.
Whenever I swap between them, I get the information that my Ipod is configured to another computer. I want to select my songs from both computers to one Ipod.
Sorry for bothering, but I actually didn't find a topic displaying my problem.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. With the iPod in manual mode you can drag the songs you want onto the iPod from either computer:

Syncing iPhoto library on two computers

My wife wants to have access to her VERY LARGE iPhoto '08 library on two computers - the desktop (her preferred) and the laptop (when the boys are doing homework on the desktop).
Rather than try to share the same library (i.e., networked drive), I set up the two to sync the library. Using +Folders Synchronizer 3.6.2+ (which is able to read and sync the package contents), I have the two libraries syncing so there is a duplicate of her library on both computers (also provides a bit of a backup).
The sync seems to be working well - EXCEPT the changes are not showing up in the iPhoto viewer. In other words...
...she added pictures to iPhoto on the desktop and then synced the laptop.
...Looking inside the iPhoto library (show package contents...) on the laptop and the new pictures were copied to the laptop.
...HOWEVER, when she opens iPhoto on the laptop they don't show up in the window.
I'm sure I'm missing something brainless. I thought it might be that the library needed to be updated but can't figure out how?

If you have an external HD connected to the Mac then it's a very easy thing to do. See Apple's KB document on iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users. Trying to get a library in the Shared folder to accept two different users is difficult. There is a site describing how to do that using Access Control Lists in Tiger: Share an iPhoto Library in Tiger Using ACL's. It may not work if you upgrade to Leopard at a later date. By far the easiest way is the external HD method.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Sharing aperture library between two computers in same house

How do I go about sharing the same library between two computers in the same house? I would like to take some or all photos around with me on my laptop and be able to have them also at home for use by my family. Will I have trouble with changes and keeping things in sync? Would I locate the library on a portable drive on our home network? Thanks,

are you wanting to constantly move the external around from machine to machine ??? or are you looking for simultaneous access ???
if you had a library on an external and moved it between computers, it could work ... just be careful to always have the external connected before starting aperture, else it will create a new null library for you ...
you could have db issues if you tried to have two people access it at once ... i dont believe that the aperture db could handle multi access at once ... not robust enough ... no locking of records, etc ...

Can I have same Itunes library in two computers?

I would like to have the same library in two computers.
If I use home share to import the whole library, Does that mean the library will disappear from the "old" computer? or
Will I be able to keep the same library in both computers?
What will happens when I add music to one of the libraries? Will they update? or Do I have to do it manually? Can playlist be imported from home share too? and can I have same playlists in the two computers?

Again without firsthand experience my understanding is iTunes copies (not moves) just the media from the Home Shared drive and adds it to your other library as a new item. It will not affect the original library.
As for syncing idevices, they are intended to sync with just the original library and only one library at a time. Apple deliberately designed it this way, and not so you could plug them into a new computer and transfer the contents from the device to the computer (see exception below). More information:

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

Started Itunes on my home computer and added some CDs that were made from old albums and I had to manually inpt titles..then took a stack on a trip and did the same on my laptop. But when I tried to update my Ipod with the laptop it asked did I want to replace the library.
Can't my Ipod be updated from more than one source?

I have seen the same info in a few different threads, but I'm still confused. My daughter has ITunes on an older computer, and wants to back up all the info for a new computer. I have ITunes on my computer, and tried to save her files on a flash drive (1 GB) and here's what happened: When I save either or both the .xml or .itl files, and tried to import them to my itunes, I got folders but no songs. When I saved the ITunes Music folder, that gave me the songs, but its more than 1 GB, so I guess I need more flash drives. [However, I was able to import a song that had been downloaded from a CD onto my daughter's computer while the drive was in place on my computer, but when the drive was gone, so was the song......is that always the case?] Do I need to copy the entire ITunes folder (including the .xml, .itl and Music) to the flash drive, and then copy that to the hard drive on the new computer? Help!

What is the best way to manage one library on two computers?

My wife and I recently bought Macbook's, switching from our previous Dell desktop. Now that we have two computers we want a way for both of us to be able to access our iTunes library from our respective computers and add music to our iPods. When I add our music into my Library and set my library to share this only seems to allow her to play the songs on her Macbook but not add them to her iPod. Adding our music to her own library raises the problem of new albums I download not appearing in her library unless she manually adds them. I would like a way we can keep all of our music in one folder (on our Time Capsule) but both be able to download music, have it show up on the other persons library, and add songs to our iPods from our own computers.

Correct. You cannot sync an iPod to a playlist provided by iTunes Sharing. The track must be on the computer to which the iPod is being synchronized.

iTunes doesn't have any built-in folder watching capability, so without third-party software help, content added from one computer has to be manually added to iTunes on the other computer. Hazel says it can be set up to add content to iTunes automatically, but I haven't tried it myself.
Alternatively, you can each have your own iTunes library on your own computers and use one of the several third-party utilities to keep the libraries in sync. If that's of interest, post back and I can provide links to the utilities I know of.

I want to be able to sync up my iPhone on both computers, but it keeps telling me I have to resync my entire phone, which is just crazy. How can I sync up itunes? I have .mac to sync my contacts, mail, etc.

Constantly? The MacBook Air is brand new.
Even if you sync iTunes between two computers With something like this -> syncOtunes, you will still get this message if you sync to the other computer. The libraries may be have the same music but they are not the same library.

Sharing a single itunes library between two computers - must be possible!

This is probably a commonly asked question, but I cannot find a step by step guide to doing it (if indeed it is possible).
I have got a copy of itunes running on my media computer/server in my living room. What I want is to connect my laptop over the network and share this library - the effect being that it is like I am using the original computer.
In essence I want to be able to add muscic, edit tracks, update my ipod from either computer and the changes be made in respect of both computers. I suspect that this is done by making sure that the laptop uses the same database information as that created by my main computer but am not really sure where to start.
Could anyone perhaps give me a step by step guide as to how to do this - a single database that can be used by two computers each running itunes. One thing I am pretty sure is not possible is to for two people to be using itunes at the same time, so I would ahve to avoid this.

Ah. Sorry about that, I guess I skimmed over the add music part. Correct, in that the home sharing wouldn't allow you to add music to the media server library. The only thing that I can think of that would give you what you want is to use a shared folder on the network and then map both of the iTunes to that folder. At least that way music would go into the same folder. The only question is about the library on the other computer, if it would get updated when you use the other to add music.

Use same Aperture 3 Library on two computers

Hi folks, haven't found a solid answer on this searching so thought I'd give it a post.
I'm using Aperture 3 as my main workflow/management tool on my 15" MBP. My library is getting large enough that I'm going to be in danger of running out of space soon, and could use the performance boost that a desktop would provide.
My question is: Can I use the same Aperture Library on my MBP on a second Mac? Something along the lines of sharing my Pictures folder from one and pointing Aperture to the library on the second.
That way I keep everything in the same library but still usable on two computers (notebook / desktop).

What you describe is technically possible, and I haven't tried it myself, but I'm almost certain that you'll notice a performance hit working with your library over a network. I could be wrong, though. What I had been doing was to save my Aperture library on an external drive (I have a LaCie Rugged 500GB) that I could plug in to either my MacBook Pro or my iMac and work on it from either machine. Of course, if you're like me, and carry that drive and laptop everywhere, you'll want to make sure you have a current backup of your library that you can fall back on in case the worst happens.
The workflow I'm moving to now, because of Aperture 3's new syncing/merging features, is to have my main library on my iMac at home (on 1TB external drive), and smaller, more manageable libraries that I can use with the laptop, and sync back to the mothership when I get home.

To authorize the computer, it needs to be connected to the internet at some point. After that, you can copy your music to as many computers as you want - But only 5 computers can be authorized at a time.

Synchronize iTunes Library Across Two Computers

I have separate iTunes music libraries on my work and home computers. I would like to keep them synchronized, such that if I add a song, or change the rating/playcount/etc on one computer it is reflected on the other.
I currently use an external HD and a 3rd party sync program (Synchronize X Pro) to keep my work files synchronized between the two computers. I'm wondering if I just include the music folder in the synchronization if that will work.

I have been synchronizing iTunes between two computers by duplicating the following three files/folders from the "source" computer over to the "target" computer:
iTunes Library (file)
iTunes Music Library.xml (file)
iTunes Music (folder)
However, you lastly need to check (with a text editor) the
iTunes Music Library.xml
file because about 5 or 10 lines into it, it has the following line (it's all on one line):
<key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/Users/Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/</string>
If this string does not properly describe the location of the iTunes Music folder (the folder that holds all the music files), you must edit it so that it does. (If both computers store the iTunes stuff in the Apple default location, no changes will be needed.)
With this exception, my manual "synchronization" has worked well and all tags, ratings, playlists, counts etc. have been preserved.

Only two computers authorized but ACC songs won't copy to iPod.

Today I purchased some new music from iTunes. Once I was finished downloading iTunes informed me that I might want to upgrade the software on my iPod. I did. Then when it went to sync everything it came up with the following message.
"Some of the items in the iTunes library including "Say It Ain't So", were not copied to the iPod "Ben's iPod" because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."
I checked online and iTunes say that only 2 computers are authorized, which means I've got 3 to go. The other weird thing is that these new songs and some other protected ACC songs purchased form iTunes were copied and work fine on my iPod. Does anyone know what's going on here. I'm stumped.

1) i have attempted to play one of the aforementioned purchased songs in my itunes library, per your advice (not on my ipod, but on my imac). upon doing so, i get the error message:
"This computer is not authorized to play "______." Would you like to authorize it? The message box displays the Apple ID and asks me for the password.
2) all well and fine, except that the email address which displays in the message box as my Apple ID is old and obsolete--way obsolete. So of course, if I enter my present password, it will not match this old ID.
3) i attempted to change this old ID to my present ID. when I did so, my present ID, which DOES match my present password (and, thus, which i DON'T want to change), showed up as the ID to change.
4) what do i do? at this point i'm stuck.

Sync library between two computers

I want to sync my music libraries so that the songs I uncheck, are unchecked on both computers.
Is this possible?
I have a macbook at home with my physical library.
I use itunes match so I have my music on my work cpu (PC)
When I'm at work, I unchecked the songs I don't want to listen to... and do the same at home, but they are not in sync.

No there's no way to automatically sync two Libraries, and trying to do so will trash one or both of them because no syncing software can parse the iPhoto Library database.
Yes you could have a common Library and keep each other's content separate. Simply keyword the pics 'His' and 'Hers' and use a simple Smart Album to separate them out. You can even - based on those tags - make two master Events - one for her pics and one for his.
