Library seems to be corrupted - any hope?

Hi all,
After spending many hours insulting myself for not backing up before upgradting to iPhoto 08, I am now facing all sorts of probolems in my wife's iMac G4 (15"; 800MHz; OS X 10.4.10).
* IPhoto 08 first opened correctly but.... many albums were simply empty. OK, the files should be in the Originals folders, so I shouls spend some hours re-importing them and refilling the albums. But...
* Before trying to rebuild the library or anything else, I tried to duplicate it. No way. I tried to copy the Originals folder to another HD. No way. I get the error -36 warnging: cannot copy beacuse cannot read or write some data in 1.JPG.....
So, what can I do now, besides keepieng the cursing? I have reapaired permissions and checked disks with Disk Utility, and everything seems OK. But should I try with DiskWarrior or any other tool? BatCHMode? Rebuilding the photo library? with iPhoto Library Manager?
The main goal is saveing the pics, indeed. The second one is saving the album structure, so I can refill it manually. The third one is saving time, but the other two are clearly more important. Then in preference it would come saving money, but if I need any commercial app to try anything, it is ok. And the overall goal is saving my marriage ,-)
Amadeu

You may have to start over with a fresh library and import the Originals folder from the old library as follows (you'll still have the old library intact for further repairs):
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Almost my entire itunes music library seems corrupted. Nearly every song (431 albums) displys "the song ...  cannot be used because the original file cannot be found". Is there any way to correct this? Please help!
    thanks,

Select one of the songs in question and right click, then select "Get Info". On the main dialog page you should see where iTunes thinks the file resides. Then use Windows Explorer to see if the file is actually there. If not, find out where your music is stored. If there is not a correlation between iTunes and reality, go into iTunes and delete all of the files which are not found.  Then, in iTunes, select File->Add Folder to Library and select where the music is stored. iTunes will re-add all of the music into your library.

  • My iPad music seems to be corrupt. Can I delete everything including the back up so I can re-load afresh from my iTunes library

My iPad music seems to be corrupt. Can I delete everything including the back up so I can re-load afresh from my iTunes library
In my iTunes library on my Macbook Air everything is OK but whenever I syncronise after an update a back up is made and then re-loaded.
Can I delete this back up somehow and load direct from my iTunes Library ?

Depending upon what problem that you are having with the Music app, have you tried closing the Music app via the iPad's taskbar and seeing if that helps ? From the home screen (i.e. not with the Music app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Music app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't help then you can delete your music from your iPad and re-sync it back to it. A device's backup doesn't contain the contents of the Music and Videos apps, when you do a restore it gets those from your computer's iTunes library and not from within the actual backup, so deleting the backup shouldn't make any difference to that - if you want to delete the iPad's backup from your Mac then go into iTunes > Preferences (command-comma), and on the Devices tab select the iPad backup and click the 'Delete Backup' button.

    Hello All,
Also no answer but am having the same problem.  All my catalogueing via folders is up in smoke and no external HDs (where I would normally directly store raw footage when importing) showing up on the iMovie interface.  It is a pain the arse to go back to the earlier version - why APPLE, pray tell, do you continue to lower expectations user-friendly functions. Shall try the option+open for a library but this too is extremely inconvenient if it works like iPhoto because you have to log out to log in to a new library whereas I just want to be able to see my multiple HDs directly from the iMovie menu and then the folders within folders I have layered in there - to make it easy to FIND STUFF. Wake up Apple, you are NOT meeting your customer's needs or desires.
Thanks to the posters who are helping the rest of us lost in the dark with possible solutions - free fix-its for Apple which they don't deserve.

    Could be.
This may be hard to believe, but I think my problem was that the built-in WiFi adapter on my HP desktop had
gotten flaky. I switched to a Buffalo USB WiFi and the problem immediately disappeared. I never saw any errors, etc. from the Ralink adapter. Strange.  Might try another type of connection to the Internet.

  • Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, the photo comes up for a second, then the picture turns black with a white fuzzy circle inside it and what looks like an explanation mark. Some older, some newer,  no common thread.

Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, they come up for a second, then turn black with a white circle in the middle and what looks like an explanation mark. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the photos that are a problem, some older ones, some newer, some albums have none, some albums have a lot.

time to time (when I have a chance), I will go to Finder, bring up ALL Images and start going through them to label them (before I put a label on them, they are simply listed as 123 jpg, 124 jpg etc.).
You're damaging the Library doing that, and that's the cause of your problem.
Never, ever, ever use the  All Images search and work on items in yoyr iPhoto Library. They must only be accessed via the iPhoto window.
Restroe from abck up or try rebuild the Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Next: You need to learn how to use iPhoto. There's no need to be dragging things to the desktop:

  • Is there any hope of apple adding a 're-link with media folder'-type function to iTunes?

Is there any hope of apple adding a 're-link with media folder'-type function to iTunes?
I have 1000s of broken links after installing the latest version of iTunes and updating some files in my media folder. The location of my itunes library has not changed, and all the files are there (I know because I've just waited several hours for the files to be updated by my ultra-slow computer) - by my logic, there should be some menu option that simply re-synchronises with the media folder, just like itunes would do with an ipod - it can't be that hard can it? The only way I can restore a link is by clicking every song (I have over 28,000) and locating the file in the folder that iTunes claims to use as its media folder - the new version 10 option of then using this location to restore all broken links doesn't work because it only looks in the specific album file, and after a couple of times this dialog box no longer even comes up, so I couldn't ask it to do this even if I wanted to. At the moment the only option I can see is to completely wipe iTunes and re-load all my music from scratch - using my tired and over-worked computer this will realistically take around 15 hours that I don't have, and my computer will melt in the process. I wish I'd never tried to 'tidy up' my iTunes library...
PLEASE Apple, how hard can it be to have a function that searches for and restores broken links by itself????? I've told you where the music is - just flipping look for it yourself instead of getting me to do it!

You don't have to re-rip, re-import or re-download all your content. You can clear the iTunes library, either by selecting all in the libary and pressing the Delete key, saying "no" when it asks if you want to remove the files themselves, and then use the Add To Library command, selecting the iTunes Media folder (or iTunes Music folder, as applicable to your situation), and that will add back all your content. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes; if it does, something may be amiss with your hard drive or the library file is corrupted (in which case just delete the library file and re-do the Add To Library command).
    Regards.

  • All music tracks on my iPod seem to be corrupt after adding podcasts

Ok, I'm desperate here, but I'm pretty sure I know there is nothing I can do. My situation:
I bought a 80GB 5G iPod right when they first came out (six weeks ago?) in preparation for a 6-8 month long trip I am currently on. I loaded my whole music collection onto the iPod (about 50GB worth of music) and all was glorious. Everything worked great. Just before I left to travel across the country, I added a bunch of podcasts as well. All was still glorious. I should add I used WinXP to add the previously mentioned music/podcasts, and that I used iTunes v7.0.1 and had the iPod v1.2 software.
I then departed for my trip across the country and the iPod performed marvellously. I was thrilled with my toy. Four weeks later, I am staying with some friends in California, and I thought it would be a great chance to update my podcasts and maybe add some new ones. So I added a bunch with my friends computer, which is a Mac Powerbook (and iTunes v7.0.1).
Again, everything was working great... all the music and the podcasts. I am now getting ready to leave their house and continue travelling, so I added some more podcasts to my iPod.
So... I went to play some music today, none of my music would play, all the files seem to be corrupt. All my podcast (video and regular) are all functional. I am really devastated since I have no way to get my music library back onto the iPod if I do a restore, since my computer is thousands of miles away in a storage unit.
Any idea what happened? How I can prevent it from happening again? Any remote chance I can salvage anything?
    thanks in advance!
    Christopher

check and see if the files causing this issue are mono audio format (vs. stereo).. if so, convert them to stereo until apple comes out with a fix... (u.u) they should play once you convert them..

  • Aperture library seems to grow on its own

I imported a large number of photos into the Aperture library from an external drive I used to back them up from my PC. I decided to do this instead of referencing them from the external drive. It was about 85G worth of data. When I was done it seemed in Finder that it took up approximately the same space - which made sense. On import Aperture chose its own collection of folders and projects - which is OK - but now that I am reorganizing the library seems to be growing even though I believe I am moving files - not copying them. It was a date structure because that is how it was in windows and I am breaking away from that so there are folders for years, but in each I am making projects for events or subject (then adding projects and folders in those as needed) - by moving them out of their original month project/folder. So I have a folder 2010 and if I highlight it I can see all of my photos from 2010. Under 2010 are projects and if I highlight them, the appropriate photos are shown. I assumed this was correct, but I now believe I have duplicates of all or most photos as when I look in finder properties my Aperture library is now 138.45 GB.
Any ideas on what I might have done? Any ideas how to correct this? I cannot see the photo files in finder as I could in Explorer on the PC, so I do not know which files may be duplicates or how to correct this.
    Thanks -

Assuming you have the back up drive still full of the images, you can simply create a new library by depressing the 'Option' key while launching Aperture > Create New.. button. This would allow you to start over.
You could then import the images and wait a while (this might be a couple of hours depending on the amount of images) for Aperture to build all the previews. Once that is done, you can run the 'Get Info' command on the library package and see what the final size is.
As for moving vs. copying, see this part of the user guide:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=5%26section=14
Aperture uses previews to show you the image data with all current instructions applied to it so you can work with the image. These take up space and result in a larger amount of space because they are in addition to the original files (which are not touched other than to be read by the program to build - or render - the preview you will be working with).
You can control the size of the preview that is built by going to 'Aperture menu > Preferences... > Preview section'. Selecting a resolution size and quality will affect the overall space used by all the previews in Aperture. The default values are: Half Size and Quality = 8. The resolution listed that has an asterisk by it is your monitors resolution (if you have a corresponding monitor size with the list).
Note - I use 1920 x 1920 (my monitor resolution) and Quality = 8, since I can easily change the drives in my machine and therefore space is less of a consideration than say a notebook or iMac.
Deselecting 'New projects automatically generate previews' option in the same section will prevent Aperture from doing so and can keep the size of the library down. You can generate previews manually in the 'Photos > Update Preview (while holding down the 'Option' key ) - turns to 'Generate Preview'.
Thumbnails (which are 1024 x 1024) are always generated and cannot be controlled, but some people are happy to use these for general browsing and just generate a preview when they need it.
Aperture does use space, so you just need to decide how much you want to dedicate to it. The referenced image library scheme keeping the masters on an external drive and the library on the internal drive is used by many to work with space limitations.
Note - you can still view the contents of the Aperture library by Control+Click (right-click) on library package > Show Package Contents command. Beware though, as changing any files in the package can corrupt the library. Just viewing the files in Finder without any changes is okay if you are confident in that type of work on a computer.
Final note - as an example, with a 4 MB JPEG master file in my library, the preview is 733 KB at the settings I use (or about 18% of the original). This means that I could have 5 versions of the same image (plus the original master file) in the library. If I used just OS X and Photoshop, I would only get the original and one copy for the same price in space.

  • Address Book backup file seems to be corrupted

I have a backup Address Book file on and external hard drive that seems to be corrupted. I am getting messages like this when I restore from backup:
    2008-09-26 06:47:11.655 Address Book[296] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
    /Applications/Address Book.app/Contents/Resources/Aqua2RemovePressed.tif
The parser will retry as in 10.2, but the problem should be corrected in the plist.
Error in createMutableDictionaryValue:1012 for property 'Email' 'XML parser error:
Unexpected character 9 at line 1
    Old-style plist parser error:
Unexpected ';' or '=' after key at line 1
I've restored and trash the file twice and the message doesn't point to the same tiff file. I think it has to do with the xml metadata format. I don't know much about metadata repairs or even much about the protocol for it.
Any ideas on how to repair my backup file? (I have over 2,000) contacts and retyping them all would be rather time consuming)

I'm not convinced there's anything wrong with the backup file, since the error message points to a tiff file, and a different one each time you trash it or restore it. But if the file is just an AddressBook.data file, you should be able to copy it from the hard drive to Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (after you rename the one that's already there to AddressBook.bak, and after you quit Address Book). Then restart AddressBook and see if that restores your contacts.

  • Is there any hope for a water damaged ipad mini?

I accidentally spilled some water over my ipad mini. I think the water got into the ipad thru the earphone jack. If spent about two weeks trying to dry it out.
The excess  moisture that was inside the screen has disappeared (after head and rice and all that sort of thing) but it will not switch on.
If I connect to the power, I can hear the audible beep that happens when you plug it in. If I leave it for a while, I can randomly hear Siri saying something like 'Siri cannot operate'(not too sure - I've always been too far away) and 'please connect to Internet'
This makes me feel there is something there but, I still can not turn it on.
    Any help? Any hope?
    Noreen

    there may not be unfortunately.
The water itself doesn't damage the device, but the short circuits the water causes does the damage. Anecdotally, people have reported success drying their device out, but usually the key is to rice it and leave it until it's totally dry. And avoid any power that may cause those short circuits. Since you've turned it on and such what damage there was to do is probably already done.
Just guessing, from what you;'re saying, the wifi part and the backlight/screen light seems to be damaged even though part of the operating system works (since siri can tell you she needs the internet)
You may be to the point of hoping Apple can grant you an out of warranty replacement (they don't have to when it's user damage) or looking for a new device.

  • Any hope for a 5c retrieved from water immediately?

Is there any hope for a iPhone 5c that was dropped in the water?  Put it in rice for 18 hours and it started up.  Shut it down and tried a little later and NOTHING.

Overnight may be enough if it was a splash of water (ie: you left the phone near a sink while washing dishes, forgot to dry your hands before touching it, and some water got in the dock connector/headphone jack), but if it was fully submerged and was powered on at the time, odds are it's been damaged already. It may power on and seem fine after a week, but it's very likely you will need to replace it much sooner than you'd expected.
Apple will replace it for a fee ($269 is the cost listed here for Out-of-Warranty service).

  • Is there still any hope to have virtualization feature for my compaq 620 energy star notebook?

    Dear HP Support,
it looks like that the motherboard of my compaq 620 energy star notebook doesn't support virtualization technology, even though replace the processor with one with virtualization feature, my notebook still can't have virtualization feature. moreover it is said the CPU socket type of notebook is soldiered to the motherboard, so the processor of notebook can't be replaced. if this is the case, it seems that i can't replace the processor of my notebook.
am i correct? is there still any hope to have virtualization feature for my compaq 620 energy star notebook?
    thanks,
    q.s.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The processor can be upgraded; it is socketed. However, virtualization must be implemented in the motherboard and BIOS and without that, upgrading the processor will do no good. Which processor do you have?
    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
See page 120....virtualization is possible on some models but I am going to assume only the models with a Core2 Duo processor. Celeron and Pentium Dual models use a different chipset on the motherboard so even if you put in a Virtualization capable CPU it would not work.

In the past 24 hours I have attempted to download 3 songs from iTunes, but get this message: ""The file seems to be corrupted. To redownload the file, choose ""Check for Purchases'' from the store menu.'' When I do that, the same message comes back again and again. iTunes has already sent me a receipt and charged me for the downloands, yet I haven't actually received them. Any suggestions/explanations?

the same thing has happened to me. i tried to download the same song 2 days ago and i was charged but when i try to download it it gives me that notice. my sister said that happened to her and you have to repurchase the song but its not really fare because you have to purchase the song twice.

  • Lost All SD Card Data Via Create "Disk Image" - Any Hope To Recover?

    Hi All,
Hope this is the right place to post - I run Snow Leopard on a June 210 2.66 i7 UMBP. Please forgive my very limited knowledge but I was following instructions on how to create a "Disk Image" of a SDHC Card to preserver exact data so as to enable easy import of Full HD 60FPS AVCHD/.MTS stuff shot on a Sony DSC-HX9V Camera. (Sony PS Video Mode)
I am basically "Monkey See. Monkey Do" & was having a nightmare trying to figure out why I could not transfer the stuff on the SD Card to iMovie 11/ iMovie HD. I read lots of threads here & elsewhere & the advice seemed to be to make a "Disk Image" of the SD Card via Disk Utility & then import into iMovie from there. I found the following online instructions:
    http://blog.scoopz.com/2008/10/13/ba...to-disk-image/
I followed the exact instructions to the letter but kept getting error messages a few times & the process would not complete. On the last occasion (4th), the process completed very quickly & a "Disk Image was created on my desktop. I noticed that it said that there was pretty much 16GB free out of the 16GB capacity of the card & when I opened it, all I found were folder icons & garbled descriptions with some strange files - The SAME was true of the stuff on the SD Card which I was desperately trying to back up & save. The Card was full of Data when I inserted it.
All the photos & videos in all folders are now missing/gone & I do not know why. I am desperately hoping there might be some way I can get all the stuff back - is there any hope? What, as someone of very limited understanding of these things, do to recover the stuff on the SD Card if at all possible? I have enclosed some pics so you can see what I see. What happened here - where did all my stuff go?
    Many Kind Thanks!

You were on the right track, but now the disk free space doesn't give me much hope you'll recover anything.   The .MTS files are in fact the video files:
    http://www.etinysoft.com/
Total Video Converter can convert these files to MPEG-4 that iMovie, iTunes, iPhone, and iPod can use. First double check that there aren't any .MTS files left with http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/ And if it can't find any, use one of these data recovery tools:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you have it, then you can use Total Video Converter to get it to a format you can use. I have a Sony DSC-HX-100V and it makes the same sort video files.
