Library/StartupItems folder lost security settings

After running DiskWarrior I re-started my computer and up jumped a dialog box with a message about the security settings not being set on the Library/StartupItems folder being set. Here is the System Log message:
Dec 15 12:17:20 Bubbas-Computer /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityFixer.app/Contents/MacOS/SecurityFixer: "/Library/StartupItems" failed security check: permissions
Dec 15 12:17:20 Bubbas-Computer /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityFixer.app/Contents/MacOS/SecurityFixer: "/Library/StartupItems" failed security check: not owned by GID 0
It gave me the opportunity to fix it, but I don't understand how this happened. I have never seen this message before and I didn't do anything unusual.
Thanks, Bill

Tiger's startupItems folder requires permissions that are different from Panther.
Is your computer maintained by anyone other than you? people at work? Something like FileWave, which we use, or Rsync could be changing files in there on you. If it's your own personal computer then it's probably not that.
It's also possible that an installed program may change permissions on an item in that folder to be something other than what Tiger uses. What items are in your /Library/StartupItems/ folder?

    Why I get the notification:
"Items in the Startup Items folder (“/Library/StartupItems/”) have not been started because the folder does not have the proper security settings."
    after starting up,
when I have no items in that  folder?
Removing the folder (as admin) and restart, automatically recreates the folder, (which is fine) but I get the same message about security.
Why,? or rsther how can I make it go away?

  • Latest updates delete System/Library/StartupItems folder

One of the following updates delete the System/Library/StartupItems folder:
Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Snow LEopard 1.0
    Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.1
    Safari 5.1
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.0
    iTunes 10.4
    iWork Update 6 9.1
This is on a MBP 13-inch, Early 2011 running 10.6.8.
It causes the machine to freeze at intermitent periods of times and reports the following error message in the console:
com.apple.launchd [1] (com.apple.SystemStarter) Failed to count the number of files in "/System/Library/StartupItems" : No such file or directory
There have been posts on how to fix this, but why is it being deleted by these updates?

I have the same console mesages repeating ad-nasium as you do. What is interesting is I do have the StartuoItems directory but it is empty. The problem I have is that the log-in window comes up as normal, but I can not type in it for about 5-8 seconds. This has started after the latest updates which you mention. Don't know if this issue is related or not. Have deleted the loginwindows and loginitems preferences to no effect.

  • WRT54G v5 lost security settings

We have two clients who have had WEP-secured routers spontaneously reset to unsecured, rendering info on their peer networks visible to outsiders using wireless computers.
We know security was enabled for a period of time. It's possible there could have been a power event (outage/near lightning strike) that resulted in the loss of settings. Is this a known problem? Is there a way to prevent, predict or check for this kind of security breach using this equipment? Would another mode of encryption be less subject to spontaneous loss of settings?
Short of driving around to all our customer sites periodically with a wireless laptop checking for open connections, I am at a loss...
Thanks in advance for at least sharing our angst.

Since it has happened to two of our customers (but only two that we have been notified of), it is not a common problem -- but in both cases, the router was plugged into a surge suppressor. Also, it did not completely reset -- for example, the default password did not work. We had to push the reset to get into the management console. Neither was "fried" -- they worked after being reconfigured. My latest theory is that they were hacked somehow. But lots of questions remain.
    Inherently insecure. Full stop.

  • Help!! Can someone help me with this message I keep getting before startup, please ?? Here it is: "/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not  have the proper security settings. Help!?!?

    Hello:
I keep getting this message upon startup. Can't figure out how to address it. Here it is.
"/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
    Any suggestions?

There's an invisible one name "Icon" according to the error message.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
First, make invisible files visible. Find the invisible file in that folder and remove it. Please be sure you are looking in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder. There is another one in the /Home/Library/ folder. Be sure you look in the right one.

  • Removing items in my startupitems folder

My own account login items list in my systems preferences window is limited to one item- an istat menus helper app.
But my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder contains two items that I don't recognize and don't think have much to do with starting up the computer.
One is a Qmaster folder and another is named RDUSB00A3Startup.
Each folder contains a few items, including a unix executable file and a plist file.
My mac hd/system/library/StartupItems folder is empty.
Can anyone please advise on whether the items in my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder are necessary and if deleting them could affect my computer? I don't use Qmaster and have no idea what the RDUSB00A3Startup folder is for.
The Mac is a Mac Pro.
    Thanks for any advice.

I would instead see if FCP has an uninstaller. If so use the uninstaller as there may be more than just that startup item to deal with. If FCP doesn't have an uninstaller then see the following for more information.
I don't know for sure what the RDUS item is. The following info may help track down everything properly.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Startupitems folder

I have noticed a slow down in the boot times with my mbp. Everything boots fine until after the os x load screen. Then it takes about 2 minutes for the top menu bar, icon, and dock to load up. I'm thinking that this is a problem with a start up program? I was reading on one of the apple help documents, and located the library/startupitems/ folder. There's one or two things in there, that I don't recognize as being things that I installed. Is it ok to delete items out of the startupitems folder?

The first is installed by Temperature Monitor/Hardware Monitor software.

I do not know what any of these do or how to fix them.  I have run multiple disk permission repairs & disk repairs.  The startup & system extension errors continue to come up.
I even followed the directions to move HP IO & HP Trap Monitor to the trash, run disk permissions repair, put back in folder, then restart - and still am getting error message.

  • Error message: ""/Library/StartupItems/IntegoCommon" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings."

I recently got a new Macbook Pro. I transferred my info from my old mac. Now when I startup my Macbook Pro, I get this error message "“/Library/StartupItems/IntegoCommon” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings." I have run Disk Utility, but nothing has changed.
    Thanks!

Uninstall any Intego junk according to its instructions and ensure that all its components have been completely eradicated from your Mac. You may need to download Intego's installer so that you can run its uninstaller.
Intego will make your Mac run very poorly, unacceptably so. Never install such junk on a Mac.

  • How do I change security settings on items in Startup items folder in Library

I just installed pro tools TEN on my Mac OS X 10.6.8  -When I log in I get a pop up message that says items in the startup items folder in library won't open because of incorrect security settings.  Now it has given me separate pop up windows saying that those items have been disabled.
So my question is:  How do I "Fix" the security settings on the startup items folder so that these items are not disabled.  I don't need them to automatically open every time I log in, but they are obviously part of Pro Tools, and I need them so that Pro Tools performance is not affected.  The items are:
    DigiDesign Loader
    Pace Support
How do I Fix it so that they are not disabled, but that they only open when they need to open, and don't affect pro tools performance?
    Thanks for the help,
    Tristan

It could be that it Reader-enabled. Try: File > Save a Copy
If that's not it, post exactly what it shows for: File > Properties > Security > File Restrictions Summary

  • How do I deal with "StartUpItems if2k" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings?

Whenever I turn on or restart my MBP, a dialog box appears saying --> “/Library/StartupItems/if2k” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
    How can I fix this?
First, I searched online and found a site with a If2k_Remover_V2.zip file, but whenever I try to open the link, a page comes up saying,
    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /w/files/if2k/If2k_Remover_V2.zip on this server.
    Any thoughts on this?
Also, I see the if2k folder in the Library/StartUpItems; is it something I can just drag into the Trash?  Or would that be a bad move?
