Library transfer

I have been using iphoto for a while now and have downloaded the trial aperture version. I imported my entire iphoto library into the aperture library, and now I'd like to delete my iphoto library to free up space. However I've noticed that when I go through the finder and select Iphoto library, it's 13 gigs or so, and when I move down the list to aperture library it's only 7 or so. I don't want to delete the old I photo library and lose images!!
Also, didn't you used to be able to go deeper into the photo libraries for example into the file structure itself? i e, year, date, etc? Now it doesn't seem to let me go any deeper than just the library itself...
Thanks

iPhoto creates a JPEG version of every single RAW file. And when you make edits it can save more JPEGs. So depending on settings, the iPhoto library may be larger. I can't say for sure.
If it were me, i wouldn't delete it. i would save it somewhere external as an archive.
You can see the contents if you right click on the iPhoto library and select "show package contents."

I did a itunes library transfer from my old computer to my new computer. However when I select to play some of the songs from my new computer I get a message saying the file can't be located. This does not haqppen on the old computer. Any suggestions that might fix this problem.
Both computers have Windows OS's and I have the newest versions of I Tunes.

It seems you havent copied the actual music files over.

  • Ipod touch library transfer?

I have a ipod touch. About a month ago my old computer crashed. That was the computer that my I-Tunes with my I-Pod Library was stored. I now have an I-Pad. What will happen when I plug my I-Pod touch into my new I-Pad with the same I-Tunes account? Will the library transfer or will I have to rebuild. Do I have any way of backing up my I-Tunes library from I-Pad?

    Welcome to the discussions,
you need to connect to a computer to sync your device. If you have to sync to a new iTunes library, your device will be erased during the first sync. But you can perform a manual backup to transfer your data and copy your bought apps and media by selecting File->transfer purchases in iTunes.
Disable autosync before you connect in iTunes/Settings/Devices.
Music you did not buy in iTunes will only copy to your computer if you use 3rd party software, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
To back up manually, make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

  • An iTunes Library Transfer Puzzle...Help!

Okay, let me try to be as clear as possible...
I keep my iTunes library on an external firewire drive.
I'm preparing to transfer all operations, including iTunes, to my new Macbook (from my old eMac)
Prepping for this move, I noticed that at some point imported music stopped going to my external drive and started going to my eMac drive.
So now my iTunes library is split between my eMac and an external firewire drive.
    NOW FOR THE PUZZLE:
I want to transfer all the files from the eMac to their rightful home on the external drive.
Is there a simple way to move all these files at once (about 17 GB worth) so that the iTunes browser and my playlists will know to look for the songs on the external drive not the eMac?
Once everything is on the external drive as it should be, I plan to transfer the whole library to the iTunes browser on my Macbook.
My big fear is that the playlists will get screwed up (playlists consist of songs now on the eMac AND on the external drive).
Anyone out there able to help me sort this out?
    Thanks a bunch.

    jsguntzel,
    Welcome to Discussions.
Prepping for this move, I noticed that at some
point imported music stopped going to my external
drive and started going to my eMac drive.
This might have happened when running iTunes with the
    external drive not yet mounted/attached.
iTunes has to have a folder to store the next ripped
CD and will reset the 'iTunes Music folder location'
to the default location (on your internal disk) if it
doesn't find your 'iTunes Music' folder.
I want to transfer all the files from the eMac to
their rightful home on the external drive.
Set the 'iTunes Music folder location'
    (Preferences>Advanced>General) to the folder
containing your music on the external disk.
Then choose 'Consolidate Library...' from the
    Advanced menu in the menubar.
This will copy all music which is not already there,
    to the external disk.
After that is done, you can delete the 'iTunes Music'
    folder on the eMac.
Note: only delete the 'iTunes Music' folder inside
the 'iTunes' folder. Don't delete the library files.
Once everything is on the external drive as it
should be, I plan to transfer the whole library to
the iTunes browser on my Macbook.
Copy the 'iTunes Library' file (in
    /Users/Username/Music/iTunes) to the external disk.
Attach the external disk to the MacBook.
Copy the 'iTunes Library' file from the external disk
    to /Users/Username/Music/iTunes on the MacBook.
Run iTunes on the MacBook. All playlists and songs
    should be there.
To transfer the music from the external to the
MacBook, read the detailed instructions in: iTunes: Moving your iTunes
    Music folder
In short that would mean for your situation:
Reset the 'iTunes Music folder location'
    Consolidate library
At the end, all songs and playlists will be on the
    MacBook.
More information about the library files can be found
here: What are the iTunes library
    files?
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes user library transfer from one account to another on the SAME comptr

Initial information: I have my computer, internet is with SBC Yahoo DSL. It has five sub accounts on it; mine, my wife's and my three children. Each has their own subaccount to make life easy.
I bought my wife an ipod in the August and through ignorance set up the itune to run on my subaccount. So when she wanted to buy a song, she had to go to my subaccount, log on, buy the song, plug in and download to the ipod. No problem.
I then bought my daughter an ipod for her birthday in September. Not knowing any better, she plugged into my subaccount and got all of her mother's stuff. Not a big problem in that they like the same stuff.
December my son gets an ipod. I learned my lesson and set up an itunes account on his subaccount. He therefore buys songs, that go to his ipod only. He wanted some songs from mom's, so I couldn't figure how to get them over. So I read the instructions on this web page. I burned the disk with the 22 songs that he wanted, but when burning the discs, no info (song title, artist, album) came with it, so I manually added the song titles and artists names. He was satisfied.
Now mom and sister want their songs put onto their subaccounts so that they won't have to share, or better, won't have to down load what each other has. I tried burning more discs, but when I got to disc #11, I realized that once again, there are no names or titles, etc to the songs on the burnt discs.
QUESTION: (finally) Is there a way to transfer the songs from dad's itunes, to other subaccounts on the SAME computer. This way not needing to burn lots of CD's without the information that they want.
Final piece of info, in case you don't know how SBC/Yahoo DSL is set up. I have the different subaccount on the computer, but to get from one to another, you need to either log off, or so simply "switch users." For this reason, such functions like "select all" then "copy" then "paste" I don't think can be done. Please make your answers very simple as I am not that computer literate.
    Thank you

I'll try and keep this simple. It gets a bit confusing.
Ok, in the account which you want to transfer songs from, make a playlist of all the songs you wish transferred. After you do so, open the playlist, then go to "File > Export Song List". Put the file in a place that you'll remember. Then, go to the account you want the songs to go to, then go to "File > Import", and find the file you created from the other account and open it. That should import those songs into that iTunes library.

  • IPhoto library transfer 8.1.2 to 9.5.1

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from 8.1.2 to 9.5.1. Old iMac runs iOS 10.6.8 with very limited to upgrade. I've tried rebuilding the library through iPhoto 8.1.2 and then transferring.  Also tried transferring library to 9.5.1 and rebuilding there. Neither worked.  iPhoto 9.5.1 makes it through stating that it needs to upgrade the library, but then throws an error message that the database cannot be read (even though the library is fine on 8.1.2).  Considering iPhoto Library Manager or making room to install iLife 11 on the old machine to upgrade the library before transferring.  Would either of those work or is there something else to try first?
Thank you for any help -

Still not recognizing the EHD iPhoto library  from my old Mac-still showing up gray with slash through it.
Are you seeing something like this?
Right click on the item and select "Show Package Contents" from the Contextual menu.  Display the contents in the list mode, take a screenshot of it and post here.

  • ITunes library transfer from PC Vista to a new MacBook Pro

Hello, I am considering a MacBook Pro and am ready to move forward but have a fairly large music file in my PC (Vista OS) iTunes (authorized to me) file. I am interested in how to easily transfer these files to the mac so that I can stop using the PC iTunes library as my main download site and use the MacBook Pro exclusively. I am new to Apple so be gentle. "iRip" in PC terms has made some back up easier but in the conversion to Apple that is not available.?. What are the options? Thank you for any information.

  • Iphoto library transfer not organized in folders

My Mac book pro HD was full and I wanted a larger 500GB HDD. I had Best Buy swap out the old drive for a new HDD.
I needed to transfer my iphoto collection to my computer ( with the new high capacity HDD ). I used a adaptor to conncect the now externalized HDD to the mac book pro. It was recognized. I was able to then tranfer my photos from the library to the desktop of my mac book pro (all 12000 pictures and videos ). I then dragged this to iphotos and all 12000 pictures transferred sucessfully. The problem is that I had all of these pictures organized by folders with event names and dates. They did not transfer over like this. All 12000 came over into a single event folder arranged in random order.
HELP! Is there a way to fix this. I need all of these 12000 pictures organized like they were ...in about 200 or so event folders.
The externalized HDD is now unreadable! Dont know what happened to it but now when I connect it, the mac book does not recognize it and it is unreadable..maybe this can be fixed and it still has all of my folders on it with my pictures organized.
I still have the photos sitting in my desk top as well ( from the original tranfer as I did save then to the desk top thankfully )
    Any advise is appreciated
    Thank you

You do not provide details of how you transfered the iPhoto library - the correct way is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
You do not transfer photos and you do not import anything - just drag the iPhoto library package accross and open it with iPhoto

  • IPhoto to Aperture Library Transfer Oddity

Or maybe I should have just said iPhoto Library oddity, since Aperture seems fine, and in the end, seems to have done what it should have.
    Let me explain:
A few weekends ago, I started to transfer my entire iPhoto library from iPhoto v7.x (current version) to my Aperture v2 library. I started my iPhoto library over three years ago, using iPhoto v5 and OS X 10.4, later upgrading to iPhoto v6 via iLife ’06 in mid 2006, and finally iPhoto v7 via iLife ’08 last Fall. I then upgraded to Leopard and Aperture v2 this past Spring.
After transferring some 46,000 photos (with most being RAW + Jpeg pairs) from iPhoto to Aperture, I noticed that a there were a large number (approximately 1,800) of stacked photos were one photo was an iPhoto Original RAW photo, and the other was an iPhoto Edited RAW photo. The curious thing is, I didn't edit all of those RAW files in iPhoto, I only edited a select few dozen of them. It should be noted that all of the edited and original Jpegs pairs were also stacked, and the orientation of all of them looked fine.
As it turned out, all of these mysteriously edited photos were shot as verticals, none were horizontals. And when looking at the unstacked pair, the edited photo was properly rotated, but the Original iPhoto RAW photo was not, despite having its orientation listed as portrait. When I rotated an Original iPhoto RAW photo to correct it, the orientation was changed to landscape, even though the photo was displayed in portrait mode.
Upon further digging, it seems that all of the vertical photos that were imported into iPhoto v5 were affected, as were some of the vertical photos that were imported by iPhoto 6, but none of the photos imported be iPhoto v7. I don't remember the exact dates that I imported them and when I upgraded iPhoto, but the timeline seems close.
I also noticed recently when using iPhoto that the info display panel listed some of the RAW photos as “Jpeg (From Nikon RAW)”. I have not spot checked these files yet, but I suspect that these are the photos that resulted the creation of the Original & Edited iPhoto stacked pair in Aperture.
I do realize that iPhoto converts RAW files to Jpegs if you edit them, and I would expect that it does not when you don’t edit them. However, it would appear that iPhoto v5 always did when it rotated them, iPhoto v6 did some times, and iPhoto v7 doesn't.
I’m puzzled as to how these RAW files got edited in the first place.
I can only guess that it happened as either:
    1) The result rebuilding the cache at some point, or
    2) Possible as a result of a conversion process for the iPhoto updates, or
    3) How iPhoto handled RAW files, particularity with iPhoto v5.
But as to why these particular files were affected, and most of the vertical shots were OK, I don't know. Any Ideas?
As for the iPhoto edited RAW photos, I plan to delete them since there doesn't seem to be a point in keeping them, because I have the original RAW file, and the original and edited Jpeg versions. They were easy to find using keyword and Aperture excellent filtering tool.
Incidently, I've also had some problems with the "Black Frames" problem and also the "Unsupported File Format" error with photos that were directly imported into Aperture. I hope that my photos are not corrupted.
Other than that, I'm really liking Aperture2 a lot!

My iPhoto library shrunk drastically when I switched to Aperture, from around 13.8GB it dropped to 9GB. I was worried at first but everything appears to have showed up.
The only things that I can attribute it to is the fact that when an image is imported into iPhoto with auto rotate data, the image is duplicated before it is rotated in Aperture it is not.
iPhoto duplicates the image on virtually every modification.
My iPod photo cache was quite large as well, but Aperture does not import this.
Videos you may have in iPhoto will not be imported into Aperture.
I also get the feeling that preview and tumbnail data is more optimized in Aperture.
If you are unsure backup your iPhoto library to an external drive as a read-only disk image, then if you find any problems with your photos in Aperture you can go to the disk image and get them.

  • IPhoto 08 library transfer

I migrated my photos from iPhoto 6 to my new MacBook Pro with iPhoto 08. I imported the photos using "Import to Library" but noticed that iPhoto 08 reorganizes all the pictures when viewed in the "Events" mode. I have several photos that are duplicated in "Originals" folders as well as some in randomly named folders. I also noticed that some of the photos did not list chronologically and had incorrect dates assigned to them. All in all, I have 30% more items than my original iPhoto 6 library. My photos are now unorganized, duplicated, and take up more hard drive space. Did I do something wrong in the transfer? Anyone else see this?

1- it probably is better to post in the iPhoto '08 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1192&start=0
2 - yes you did do the transfer wrong -- assuming that you still have the intact, working iPhoto 06 Library in iPhoto 06 on your old computer, quit iPhoto '08 on your new MBP, drag the iPhoto Library from the picture folder to the desktop and copy the iPhoto 06 Library from your old computer to the picture folder on your new MBP - then start iPhoto '08 - it will request permission to update the library and after you let it you will have a new library that should match your old library with events replacing rolls
Once you are happy that the transfer is good, delete the iPhoto library from your desktop

  • IPhoto Library Transfer to Smaller Hard Drive

Is it possible to only restore parts of an iPhoto library to a new Air from a Time Machine backup? I recently upgraded to a new Air that has a smaller hard drive size and can't handle all of my photos. Is there a way to transfer part of my photo library over with limited HD space?

You would have to restore the library to an external drive, then open it in iPhoto and delete what you don't want. Nothing is actually deleted until you empty the Trash in iPhoto. When the library is small enough, copy it to the internal drive.

  • IPhoto Library Transfer to PC

I'm trying to transfer the contents of and iPhoto library from a Mac to a PC, about 150 GB of photos and videos.  I know I could probably just copy and paste to a FAT32 or exFAT HDD to make the transfer, but I want to keep as much of the work done in iPhoto as possible, (ie: organization, face tagging, etc.)  I know this may be a long shot, but is any of this possible?

You need to export the photos from iPhoto as no Windows app can parse the Library.
    File -> Export.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue. You can save much of what you've done except face tagging as there is no convention for sharing that info.

  • Songs' library transfer from nano to MacBook Pro

Just bought a macbook pro 13" retina transfering from a 7yr old dell pc realized that only half of the songs in the itunes transfered correctly.  My specific question is:  Is there a best way to transfer all of your songs' library from your ipod nano to the itunes in my macbook pro?   i found similar questions in the forum but date back to 2006 and I would like to have more up to date info..Thanks!!

From your nano to MacBook?  If you still have the Dell, you can also go from Dell  to MacBook...
To answer your question, you cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to your Mac.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the songs files are on your MacBook's drive, you can add them to your iTunes library.
NOTE:  For songs purchased by you from the iTunes Store, you can also re-download them at no cost from the iTunes Store Purchased screen.

  • Library transfer - hasn't retained play counts, ratings etc.

Recently got a new laptop, and tried to transfer my iTunes library to it. I followed a guide to do it and still keep all my play counts and song ratings etc. but it hasn't worked. I've got the xml and library files still, so can anyone tell me what i need to do to fix it?

Assuming you have a default installation of iTunes, you need to backup the iTunes folder in Music with all its sub folders.
But I Assume you will be backing up all your data including the Music folder, so that should get it.
When you get your PC back, install iTunes, then drag the iTunes folder out of music to the desktop. Then copy the iTunes folder from backup into your Music folder so it replaces the one you dragged out.
You may need to adjust the permissions on your iTunes folder so that your account and SYSTEM have full control.

  • Aperture library transfer to iPhoto library

I'm unhappy with Aperture and now that I hear Aperture will be discontinued I want to transfer all of my photo's (20K) from Aperture into an iPhoto library. How can I do this?
And is this even wise considering the new Photos?

If you have the latest version of both Aperture and iPhoto then there is no transfer. iPhoto will just open the Aperture Library.
Both Aperture and iPhoto are discontinued.
The new Photos app will also work from an Aperture library.
