When I open itunes, my library is empty. But there is an icon on my desktop that is labeled "i-tunes music library". How do I get it back into my i-tunes

I have the same problem. All of my songs are on the ipod and my computer library is empty. Have you already solved this problem??? If they answer you please let me know.

  • Big time library trouble

Help me out please.....having trouble with my iTunes library
let me give a bit of background....
I just bought a new Samsung laptop....running windows 7. Previously, I was running iTunes on my old HP laptop, running WIndows XP. I backed up my iTunes library manually on an external hard drive by simply copying the entire iTunes folder from "my music" to an external hard drive. Whenever I had to reinstall windows, I then just drop the backed up iTunes folder into the my music folder and all my music, artwork, playlists, play counts, ratings, everythign was all there and it worked beautifully. Never had an issue.
Now these new Samsung laptops have a feature where they are manufactured with a partitioned hard drive. I have 1 500GB hard drive, but it's partitioned into 100GB for drive C, and 350GB for drive D. The intent is that the operating system and upgrades and key software go on C, and your data and other games and programs you install go on D. So I installed iTunes on D, and trid to put my music (the backed up iTunes folder) on D. Well it did not even see the library. SO I started digging and playing...since I had a backup I knew I would not ruin it for good. I first learned that if i put the music in C, even though the program was on D, it worked just like normal. But I want my data on D. So I also went into the XML file where they have all the song data and playlist data, and replaced ever occurance of "C:" with "D:" THis caused my music to be visible, but the playlists and the song counts/ratings were lost, even though they were still listed in the file. Also, it made me reimport the music, wiping out all the dates that they were imported or last played. The artwork disappeared as well.
All I want is the following: I want the program, and all the music on my D drive. And I want to get it from my backup, without losing the artwork or song count/rating data, and without losing playlists or having to start over from scratch. I spent many dozens of hours in front of my computer getting all that stuff right, and while I can just play it off the C drive with no problem, i really want it on D because my music library is the single biggest thing I have on my computer.
ANyone have any ideas? Is there a way from within iTunes to move everything over to the D drive without losing anything?

Your library was on *C:\<some path>\iTunes* and you copied this folder to an external drive, i.e. *X:\<some other path>\iTunes* correct?
If so ALL you needed to do was copy the iTunes folder from X: to D: and then, having installed iTunes used the SHIFT-start method to open the library in its new location.
As long as the main iTunes library folder contains the media folder you can move the whole iTunes folder to a new path or drive and it will work.
There is no need to uninstall & reinstall iTunes - it will not be useful. Simply copy the backed up version of the library file *iTunes Libray.itl* into your iTunes folder on D: (you should probably also copy the *iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb* and sentinel files but it's probably not the end of the world if you don't.) I realise that the backed up library used to look on drive C: for its files, but when it starts up it will notice that the .itl file is on a different path and will attempt to look for the files in the local iTunes Music/iTunes Media folder. If they are there then it will work it all out. You may still need to update the folder location in preferences though it normally updates that automatically.

  • Report Painter Library: troubles with new field in the additional structure

    Hi, ALL!
I'm  creating a new field in the Report Painter table  GLFUNCT. Do do it I created my field in the additional structure GLDBZ  for GLFUNCT and create an row in the T804C table for new field.
Who has expirience in customizing using T804* tables? What tables should be used and how? I have the following troubles:
    - I do not see the new field as characteristic in the library - I don't know the customizing table to set fields from additional structure as characteristic
    - in the generated Report Painter program  my new field exists  but call of filler routine is always disabled

  • IPhoto Library trouble

I am new to the Mac so please bear with me. My issue is this. I have been working diligently in iPhoto (08) since I got my new machine in the fall. Tonight I mistakenly moved the iPhoto library file from one location in my "Pictures" folder into a "Scanned Photos" folder. Now I'm assuming that iPhoto doesn't recognize the location of the iPhoto library folder and when I go to open iPhoto, it shows up empty ("No Photos" is all I get....I should have c.6K photos in 75 events, slideshows, albums, etc, etc). The iPhoto file appears to contain the data (10.8GB) but I cannot open it. If I attempt to move the iPhoto library folder back, do I risk losing the data?
I read the following words on another discussion (TD wrote.....And remember: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss)...... I must say that this gets me very worried.
BTW-a little late but I just ordered an external hard drive.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No - you do not risk losing data by moving the iPhoto Library
you can safely drag the iphoto library back to the pictures folder (if iPhoto has generated a new one move it to the desktop first)
It is very strongly advised NOT to change anything inside the iPhoto library but it is safe to move it

  • Iphoto trouble and library trouble.....plez plez help

Ok here goes I have all my photos stored on an external harddrive. The other day while i was viewing my pictures my external got unplugged and all the pictures suddely turned grey. They continued to do this even when i restarted iphoto and plugged my harddrive back in. Then i decided to import all the pictured again from my external harddrive and somehow it added them all to my labtop making the program slow. So i then just went into iphoto and hit select all and then clicked delete. The photos are still safe on the external. My question is is that i'm trying to make a new library because when the program can't find an iphoto library it asks me to locate it which i want it to do. Its like there is a "hidden" library on my labtop that i can't find. PLez help this is driving me crazy. If you don't understand i'll clarify......

Great! I'm glad the worst didn't happen. One thing you can do to check your library is to move the size slider all the way to the right, then click the down arrow to scroll through your photos. Chances are that if you can see your photos at their largest size, then the database is fine. You can also do some spot checking - double click on some photos to see if they open in edit mode. If so, then iPhoto has not lost the links to your photos.
If you start noticing strange behavior you can do the auto database rebuild. Launch iPhoto while holding Option and Command. Check the first 3 options in the dialog box, then click Rebuild. It can take a while if you have a lot of photos. For more information on the rebuild, read this Apple article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107947

  • IPod songs -- iTunes library trouble

  • I-tunes library trouble

When I open itunes, my library is empty. But there is an icon on my desktop that is labeled "i-tunes music library" and contains my music. How do I get that back into my i-tunes?

Go to File, then Import. Find the folder the library is saved in. It will be the default location which can be found in Edit, Preferences then, Advanced. It will import the last saved library.

  • Huge Library Trouble!!!

I was trying to make some room in my iTunes library to download some new tracks that I just bought because my disc space was low. I must have really messed up because my entire library of over 4 years has completely vanished. Please, please tell me I can somehow retrieve it because I don't have back up for half of my music and I really don't feel like buying hundreds of dollars worth of music that I have already bought. Am I doomed?

System restore is a red herring, it doesn't backup any of your data. As the previous poster asked did you simply delete from the iTunes Library or from the hard drive as well? Assuming the later you can recover tracks stored on an iPod using techniques covered in these forums on a daily basis. If you don't have an iPod or it only held a selection of your library then you need some form of undelete tool. These range in price (from free) & effectiveness. When files are deleted the space they used is simply marked as availible for other data. Provided nothing has overwritten the space the files may still be recovered. Undelete tools work best if called into action as soon as you make the mistake, ideally without any further data being written to the drive. If the drive is your system drive then some loss is probably inevitable but you may still be able to recover a significant portion of your library.

  • Itunes library trouble

Upon opening iTunes, I was asked to pick a library for some reason. I selected the most recent one, but all of my music that I had imported from CD's since the date of the library was gone. I have not yet found a way to get my current library. Any tips?

This Article is useful: No music shows up in iTunes after upgrading
    Perhaps you may
    i still
have the music files on your PC -- but not seen in iTunes.
Check using Windows Explorer in 'My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\...' for folders containing your music (or wherever you keep your music folders). If it is there, we can get iTunes to recognize it. Try one or both of these:
--- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>Advanced tab. Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isn’t already). Click OK to save that setting.
--- In iTunes choose: File==>’Add Folder to Library’ & browse to the music folder in your PC drive. Click OK.
Also check in your Recycle Bin to see if you accidentally deleted it. If so, ‘Restore’ it back to it’s original spot.
Then try running a search using Windows Explorer (or similar) for files with the extensions of: m4a, m4p, MP3,
    i OR
with the partial names of the songs you are missing.
Do all the above before you decide that they have been completely erased from your hard drive.
If your music files are truly gone, and you have some or all of your music files on your iPod, these links will give you
    i several
methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists , ratings, counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you.

  • ITunes library trouble - after adding new external HD

Hi. I was running out of room on an external drive, where I keep all my of my mp3s (my "media folder"). I purchased a new, larger external HD, plugged it in alongside the existing drive, and dragged and dropped everything in the empty new drive. So far, so good.
Now here's where I think I got a little too cute. Since the old ext HD was assigned the letter J:, I figured I could reassign the new drive as J:, and all would be jake --- all existing paths would point in the same direction, and iTunes wouldn't even notice the diff! (Or so I thought.) It actually went like this: reassign existing J: to letter O:; reassign new external (which was born L:) to J:.
When I reopened iTunes after the reassignment surgery, it was a tragic mess: all playlists gone, and the library had resorted to some way earlier version, with the dreaded exclamation points indicating that iTunes couldn't "locate" the music/media files.
I then proceeded to freak out, rapidly and rabidly re-selecting different iTunes library (.itl) files --- previous versions, latest versions --- but nothing was working. I fear all of this activity basically rendered the most recent library file all-but-irretrievable.
I've searched for all library files; I've restarted and rebooted. I'm not concerned about the mp3s themselves; I know where they all are, and can simply drop them all back into iTunes, no prob. What I'm still hoping to do is find that elusive, most recent library file and bring all of my precious, precious organization back.
Any ideas? I fear this is a classic example of (very) limited knowledge being a dangerous thing.
I'm running Windows 7; iTunes 11.1.0.126. MP3 files on an external, but iTunes folder on the C:/User drive, as by default (I think; not 100% sure).
    Many thanks!!

Microsoft's SyncToy utility is ideal for this.  You can set up a "folder pair" consisting of the root iTunes folder on your master disc and the corresponding folder in your backup disc (you have options to sync all changes on both sides or to just echo changes to the master, including deletes, on the backup). Once you've done the initial copy you can run this folder pair in SyncToy to achieve what you want.
Are you using your existing external drive just for media storage or have you set it up as a fully portable library (i.e., your iTunes Library.itl file, Album Artwork folders, etc. are on the same drive as the media)?  If not, take a look at tt2's tutorial on make a split library portable - this will allow you to have everything used by iTunes on the external drive (better for portability as well as being more robust against PC problems).

  • Starting Fresh With iTunes 9.0.1...best way to get music back in/import?

Had some library troubles with iTunes 9, and decided to do a clean install of not only the program, but of Snow Leopard itself. I was waiting on an iTunes update to come out before I decided to re-load my library in, since I didn't want to risk repeat problems (I've always been one of those bleeding edge-ers, and this is the 1st time I've ever had a problem/held back...guess I learned my lesson). 9.0.1 is out and seems to address the problems I'd been having, but I caught the "start fresh" bug and I want to start over with iTunes. No playlists, play counts, etc need to be saved.
I do have a full backup of my previous system (thanks SuperDuper!), and I'm wondering what the best way to get all of my music back into iTunes is.
-Do I use the Finder to simply drag the contents of my old "iTunes Music" folder into the new "iTunes Media" folder?
-Do I drag the whole folder and drop it onto the iTunes window? (I'm worried this method won't put iPhone apps, ringtones, audiobooks and podcasts in the right place).
-Do I use the import function?
Notes: prior to making the backup, I did upgrade to/select iTunes Media Organization
I did see THIS article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 but it says it's old and I wonder if it applies to iTunes 9.
    Thanks for any help!

You might want to check that your certificate that you made has been applied to iTunes.app
    try this code in Terminal"
    codesign -dvvvv /Application/iTunes.app
Does the name on the certificate match the one you created?

  • Aperture won't launch a second time... must restart Mac

I have a huge amount of photos; so many that I had to break the library down into several smaller ones.
Until yesterday, everything worked fine. I could open Aperture by double clicking on any library or switch between them with ease.
Today, however, things aren't working so well.
When I open Aperture for the first time after a fresh restart of my iMac, it works as you would expect. Library opens and it's business as usual. Problem is, if I try to switch between libraries or if I quit Aperture and try to open it again, I get a small dialog box saying:
"Opening Aperture Library" but the library never opens; eventually Aperture stops responding and I have to force quit. The only way to get Aperture to open after this is to restart the iMac.

Here are a few things I have tried:
+ try opening a library from a different user account on the iMac: I am able to open, close, switch, etc... normally
+ connect the external hard drive with my libraries to a different Mac; same as using a different user account, Aperture seems to function normally
This leads me to believe there is something wrong wit my user account on the iMac.
My user account name is "rich"
I went into rich/Library/Application Support/Aperture and trashed everything. Unfortunately I have to reinstall my plug ins now (and all my watermarks, export settings and print settings argggh!), but that seemed only to help for a short time. After using Aperture for a few hours, the problem came back.
    This is immensely frustrating!
    I am using an iMac 27" 2.93GHz i7 with 8GB RAM, OS 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1

While I see the train of thought that led to that theory, you appear don't mention having tried a standard library trouble-shooting step. Have you used the "Aperture Library First Aid tools", as documented here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805 ? If I was experiencing the problems you've described, I'd try the tools on both the Aperture library you work with initially and the one which you fail to be able to swap to later on.
One other thought occurs to me. It might be nothing, can easily be ruled out. Is it possible that this is (still) a disk space issue? And I mean either your boot drive or the external drive containing your libraries. How much space is free on each drive when you've got Aperture up and running? If you don't want to try the First Aid tools, it might be worth trying to remember to check the free disk space while Aperture is running - immediately before you finish with the first library.
I hope these thoughts put you on the road to a solution...

Got it. As xalien suggested, was a library trouble. The WAS jre uses xml.jar. It must be used the Transformer class of the sun jdk...
