Library upgrade going on 18 hours

Beta 4 was unusable to me, probably because I had 50K images. Fine. So I used Beta 3 until it expired, and waited until V1 came out. Then I upgraded to Beta 4, backed it up, and planned to start a new library for V1, plus transfer my Beta 4 data for use as another library for whenever I needed to go back to old work.
But immediately upon opening V1, it began upgrading my library, and this has been going on for almost 18 hours now. I want to use this *******' program, but I don't know if I should stop the library upgrade (or indeed if it is still "upgrading" or is, in fact, stalled).
The progress bar doesn't seem to be advancing, but it might be going just very, very slow.
Any way to find out if things are still happening, or if it is stalled?
Has anyone had a library upgrade that took THIS LONG??
Dan

When you say "let them write out", what do you mean? I checked the XMP box in prefs, waited a short bit, then closed Beta 4, making a new backup. Just not sure if I was supposed to wait longer for it to do something.
Do I have to select everything, then export XMP sidecars from the Photo Menu. And where do those reside?
I read something that if all I have are TIFFS, JPEGS, and PSDs, then I automatically have a sidecar saved. Is that true? What about Canon RAWS?
Thanks so much.

  • Library Upgrade in Progress (9 hours later)

I have about 80k files in my library. How long did it take you guys to upgrade your libraries?

I did my 9000 files and didn't like the result. I had several shoots in the format, and it collapsed them so there was no longer a hierarchy, they all appeared at the root level. I just started all over, what a waste of time.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • Library upgrade Question - To reprocess or not to reprocess

so after the library upgrade finally goes through, and the images are adjusted to be used with the new sets of brushes and presets, Is it really necessary to reprocess masters? This is what destroyed my library two days ago and caused me to have to do this 10 hour process all over...I selected all photos in my 70,000+ image library and selected reprocess...
is there a noticeable difference in the RAW tuning between 2.1.4 and 3.0?

There is a beneficial difference (especially with 5d2 and 7d files), but for me it is not necessary to do on old images.
Only images I am working with now, or plan to re-export in the future will get reprocessed. I was happy with the old ones when I finished those projects.

  • Network timeout only for library upgrade items

I purchased an upgrade of my library, which totals 430 songs. The purchase went through fine, but when I would try to "check for downloads" so I could download the items, I kept getting "network timeout" errors. I ran the diagnostics, and after sending a support request, I was told it was probably my third-party firewall (even though it was properly configured and I had always been able to download without a problem).
I uninstalled the firewall and related security software, and when I continued to have trouble I was advised to disable all startup items. I did that, and even disabled Windows Firewall (which also was properly configured for iTunes), and I continued to get the same result.
I re-enabled the startup items and the Windows Firewall, and, just as an experiment, I tried purchasing an album from the store. The purchase went through and the album immediately downloaded without a problem. After that, I tried again to "check for available downloads." (Incidentally, iTunes shows there are 430 downloads available.) I again got the same error.
It seems clear, at this point, that I am able to connect and download, but there is something wrong on the other end of this deal that is preventing me from downloading the music I paid for. I am getting extremely frustrated, because by now I have spent hours and hours trying to get the music I paid for.
Anyone else experience anything like this, where the "update library" purchases seem to be the only thing you can't get to?

I was finally able to have the issue bumped up to a Senior Tech, who was able to help me. According to him, some ISPs have a problem with very large downloads. Over the course of several days, we broke the library upgrade into smaller chunks, with him placing the songs into the queue.
We did have a further problem at one point where some of the "upgraded" songs were duplicates of the m4p files (rather than the unprotected files). We never figured out the problem there, but he re-placed all 430 of the upgraded songs in my download queue, and this time the whole set of 430 downloaded.
So I'm not sure why it would work that time, if it was my ISP causing the difficulty, but whatever. It only took about three weeks of work and a hundred bucks or so, but I now have the items able to be upgraded.
I have to give a big thumbs-up to the techs I finally dealt with when I took matters into my own hands and called AppleCare--going through the ExpressLane was useless and a waste of time. Notody even reads the emails--all you get are form replies telling you to do what you already say you have done.

  • My iPhoto library won't open because "it first needs to be prepared," but running the iPhoto Library Upgrader does not change anything.  What gives?

I'll try to be as detailed as I can:
I have a mid-2010 iMac.  I backed-up and then wiped my Mountain Lion hard drive so that I could have a clean install of Mavericks.  I am now in the process of importing my backed-up files, like iTunes and documents, from my external back-up to my new Mavericks machine.  Everything in this process has worked so far.  I moved the iPhoto library over from the external back-up to the proper location (Users->Pictures->iPhoto Library).  Two hours later when the transfer was complete, rather than having a normol iPhoto Library icon (stack of pictures with a photo of a flower), the library appeared as a folder with a half done progress bar and an "x" close button in the corner.
This library would not open so I deleted it and started the whole thing over.  Two hours later, same thing.  I then restarted my machine and got a regularl looking iPhoto Library icon, but now when I try to open it I get a prompt that says "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first nees to be prepared: to prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader avaliable from Apple."  I downloaded the iPhoto Library Upgrader from Apple, ran it, and it says that the library has been updated and can now be used.  But when I try to open iPhoto, I hit the same problem, iPhoto doesn't open and I instead get a prompt saying that the library needs to be prepared.
One more thing, when I run the iPhoto Library Upgrader, there is a un-progressing progress bar (a sideways barber shop poll) that says the program is building thumbnails, but then Upgrader gives me a prompt that the library has been upgraded (even though the progress bar is still cranking along).  PLEASE HELP.

What version of iPhoto were you running prior to Mavericks?  First boot into Revovery volume (boot with the Command  + R keys held down) and repair the disk and disk permissions.  Then reboot back into Mavericks.
Two hours later when the transfer was complete, rather than having a normol iPhoto Library icon (stack of pictures with a photo of a flower), the library appeared as a folder with a half done progress bar and an "x" close button in the corner.
There was a problem with copying the older iPhoto library from the backup.  Delete the library and drag it once again from the backup drive to the Pictures folder.  Run the upgrader again. Is this what you see when your first launch the upgrader?

  • IPhoto Library seems to be empty after running the iPhoto Library Upgrader

    Hi,
I just transfered my account from a previous Mac Pro running 10.8.5 to a new MacBook Pro running 10.9.   I tried to open my iPhoto Library and it suggested me to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader, so I did, and upgraded the iPhoto Library, but now, there aren't any photos on my Library, the iPhoto Library weight is 32 GB, so I don't really know what's going on with it.   Please some help, all the pictures from my 2 year old daughter are there

Drag the library that is not working to the desktop on the new  Mac and then drag the library from the old Mac o the pictures folder on the new Mac and launch iPhoto
You should not need the library upgrader. It is only for iPhoto 5 and earlier. iPhoto should simply do any required upgrades and you are on your way
Once you have a working  library trash the one on the desk top

  • Library Upgrade in Progress...

I upgraded from Beta 4 to LR 1 and was not really intimidated when LR told me that this might take "a few minutes".
Twelve hours later, with LR using up 2/3 of my RAM and up to 98 of my CPU, I stopped this via the task manager.
I then rebooted my PC and tried to open Lightroom again. Now "Library upgrade is in progress" again...
This was about 8 hours ago.
Admittedly, the photographs indexed (many are high resolution scans of slides) take about a terabyte disk storage, but the database itself should be much smaller.
Anything, I can do to speed up the process?
Or will the new lightroom just not run on my system?
    Laurenz

OK, I just returned to my PC after a good night's sleep.
Library Upgrade is still "in Progress", about 1 % of the progress bar is blue.
To me this looks as though LR was really having a problem with the library Beta 4 created.
If there is no other way then re-importing everything, I'd even do that, but there's no way I could do anything like this from within the application (as it won't open).
Is there anyway, I could do this from outside?
One thing: I did not install Lightroom at the default location - I have a special drive for all programmes and used the option to install it there.
Worked fine with beta 4 - might this be part of the problem, or is it just the number of pictures referenced?

  • Is there a way to speed up my iPhoto library upgrade?

I'm moving from iPhoto 8.2 to 9.1.3 - the upgrade to my iPhoto Library is literally taking sixteen hours! It's 40 gigs worth of photos, but ...

Thanks! I was scrolling through and found that answer. I'm trying it now.

  • Where is iPhoto library upgrader

I read all of the forum posts.  Iphoto library upgrader is NOT in the utilities folder of my applications folder.  I am not a dummy. I looked.  It is not there.  I also ran a search of my entire drive and it is not there.  I have, ostensibly, downloaded the new iphoto after being not told that would be necessary after upgrading the OS. If it is not already in the folder (the library upgrader) where is allegedly is supposed to be, does that mean iphoto did not properly install.  I have the icon.  When I double click it pulls the app up, directing me I need to upgrade my library and then gives me the spinning wheel and closes the program all together.  This is BS.  Thanks for any assistance.

TD:  Thank you for your reply. Given the number of posts you both have, and the fact that this is on the apple site, and as this as more or less the only support apple has, I assumed this was subsidized, etc., by apple.  If you are all just people sitting at home, thank you.  I will say though, that the comments on the app store are fairly valid.  Apple dumps a bunch of "stuff" out there (as you don't like language only unsitable for anyone under 18)  requires an upgrade, and then waits for the users to sort it out and fix their problems.  "Enabling" comes to mind, given how many post you and some of your well intended friends have debugging problems apple should fix for itself.
So again, thank you very much for your time and assistance.  I, however, do not have time to waste on this BS (not you, this product)   Could I spend 5 hours doing it and fix it.  Probably.  But my time is more important so I will take my machine to my IT guy and let him figure it out.
You might consider, having drunk as deeply from the Kool-aide apple is serving up, that Apple given its market cap could easily handle and resolve all of this itself.  You are, for ulturistic and likely technologically religous reasons, are doing something that would be unheard of in any other context and in so doing perpetuating Apple's arrogance in releasing such a messed up product.    It would be like my dad, who loves fords, voluteering all of his free time to fix defects in new fords trucks instead of ford properly fixing its own problems.  If ford new current owners would fix all of the problems with new trucks, they would just send them all out defective knowing they will be fixed for free.  I could go on, but I suspect you get my point.
So again, on a personal level: thank you, thank you, thank you. Truly thank you .   But I do respectfully suggest 'you,' not you personally but this whole process of apple offshoring its repsonsibility to user driven chat, is an enormous part of the problem.

  • Fix for Incredibly Long Sync...? Going on 4 hours now...

I hear some of you in here complaining about your 5 minute iPhone sync, or how your backup takes 10 minutes alone. Well... my backup, alone, is going on 4 hours as I write this, AND ITS ONLY HALF WAY!
I have some apps I just purcahsed from the app store from my computer and need them synced over. I backed-up my iPhone last night (around an 8 hour process I guess...) and when I go plugging it in now, it has to have another 8 hour back-up?
*This is a pathetic excuse Apple... I think I'd rather NOT have a back-up if its going to take 8 hours.* On the other hand, I have yet to find a way to skip it, and just sync the few, new apps I've downloaded.
I have to leave in about 3 hours... out of town, and I won't be able to sync my iPhone, and I really need the apps I paid for!
Please, please, please, please, please!! I spend all this money on my iPhone that acts like its got 64K of RAM on it...? I need help, shorting my 8-hour back-up, so I can sync my few apps over!

I am no expert, but none of my syncing/backup has ever taken longer than 10 minutes. Before I bought my 3G, I learned about the 3G by reading this forum. This is probably why I have yet to select Automatically Sync when phone is connected, or ever selected Sync Only Checked Songs and Videos. I was (and still am) nervous about long sync times.
So far, I only select Manually Manage Music and Videos. (I also have MobileMe which auto syncs my calendar, address book, and bookmarks--which by the way is terrific--for me). The capacity of my iphone is 14.64 GB, Audio is at 3.29 GB, Video at 5.34 GB, Photos at 37.5 MB, Other is 224.1 MB, and Free Space is at 5.76 GB. So far I have 5 free apps on my Iphone. All of the music I synch are in Playlists and all of the podcasts I synch are in Playlists. Last night I wanted to add to my Iphone a movie I created in Imovie and had published to Itunes and wanted to add a new app I had downloaded to Itunes. I had checked Manually sync on the first screen. It seems that my Iphone prefers if I sync Music first (that does the Playlists of music and podcasts), sync Videos second, which syncs my selected TV shows and Movies (and seems to also synch my photos). I never sync podcasts (because they are in Music playlists, and don't have any checks in this category). Last I sync apps.
When I select sync Music I get msg "All existing content on the Iphone will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your ITunes library." (My tv shows disappeared from my Iphone.) When I select sync Video, I get msg "All existing songs, movies and TV shows on the Iphone will be removed and replaced with TV shows from your Itunes library. (TV shows were put back on my Iphone, and all my playlists of songs and podcasts were still there. Also, received my iMovie). Last I synced Apps and the new app came onto my Iphone. It took less than 10 minutes.
If I am doing something incorrectly, or short changing myself with above process, please let me know. I do only have 5 apps so far and I don't know how many apps you have.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 won't launch. iPhoto Library Upgrader doesn't help.

    I am going around in circles trying to get iPhoto 9.4.3 to launch. When I try to launch it I get the following message;
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.
Clicking on the Learn More button takes me to this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5037
After downloading the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool and launching it from the Utilities folder it simply hangs (greys out) and I have to force quit as it says that iPhoto is not reponding.
When the updater starts it says it is preparing photos from iPhoto 7. I never/rarely use iPhoto but I need it to select images for another application (iWeb).
Any idea how to get iPhoto to work? Can I just remove all the files in the iPhoto Library?
    Thx

    Hi Larry,
    As I said; I already tried the option/command procedure [holding down both keys simultaneously] and I get the same notice;
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.
Thanks for your suggestions but it appears you haven't read my original post where I state that I have already downloaded and tried the iPhoto Library Manager and iphoto just hangs so that I need to force quit the application.
Is there anything else that can be tried?
    Thx

  • I updated my MAC to Mavericks and purchased iPhoto 9.5.  Installed new version of iPhoto and installed using iPhoto Library Upgrade as directed.  Each time I try open iPhoto I receive the same message.

I updated my MAC to Mavericks and purchased iPhoto 9.5.  Installed iPhoto; however when I try to open iPhoto I receive The folling, "To open your library with this version of  iPhoto, it first must be prepared.  To prepare use iPhoto Library Upgrade".  I have have downloaded and installed the upgrader, with no success.
I need to add that I am a senior and am not as computer savey as I should be.  Therefore, i really need step by step help.

After you download the upgrader, you will need to go to your Applications folder and find the Utilities folder.
In there will be the iPhoto Library Upgrader (version 1.1). Open the application and follow the instructions. Should get you going.

  • I recently upgraded to iphoto11 and now cannot open my iphoto.  I get a messageto first prepare iphoto with library upgrader.  downloaded upgrader, but nothing changes.  I don't know what to do

I recently successfully upgraded my mid-2007 mac desktop to OS X 10.9        I tried to purchase a print from my iphoto and it told me that I could not do this unless I upgraded to Iphoto version 9.5 which I then did.  When I attempted to open my iphoto library following the upgrade, I got the message "To open library with this version of Iphoto, it firsts needs to prepare"   I was then prompted to use the Iphoto library upgrader.  I downloaded the upgrader as it suggested.  However, nothing different happens.  I still get the same prompt each time I attempt to open the iphoto (telling me the I need to prepare with the library upgrader.)  I have no idea what to do next.  I am not finding any help in my online searches.  Can  someone please offer suggestions?  Keep in mind that I am not a computer expert, so simple terms/instructions would be most helpful.  Thank you!

Yes, I purchased the upgrade through the apple website, downloaded successfully.  When I clicked on the iphoto icon, that's when I got the prompt that said I needed to prepare my library using the library upgrader.  I got this from apple website as well.  It downloaded, then appeared on my desktop screen as a 'library upgrader'    I don't know what to do next?  When I click it, it just keeps repeating the download process.

Vicious circle.  Please, help!  Just trying to recover about 3 years worth of photos...

    Hi!  Thanks for responding!
I have iPhoto 9.5.1, I am on OS X Version 10.9.5 on a MacBook Pro with 2.66 GHz
My current "iPhoto Library" file is OK (I can open it with iPhoto), however I cannot access the old one from iPhoto 6 titled Library.iPhoto
I tried right clicking and choosing the application, it did not work.
"exactly how did you "I got to my files and backed them up"" - I showed the contents of my Pictures folder, and it opened up the folders in Finder and I copied them to an external hard drive.  In my Picture folder I have several folders of Photos plus the iPhoto Library files (old & current)
I do have old back ups, but they are from April, and I recently imported 5 months of photos from my iPhone, so the iPhoto Library I copied after showing contents is the one I need.
