Library won't copy to external HD.

Library won't copy to my external hard drive, and current library on external HD has disappeared t be replaced by a folder that says "Itunes" -> "Itunes Media" -> "Music" -> nothing. I've always opened my external HD on one half of the screen, and iTunes on the other half, and dragged my music from iTunes to my HD. Now that doesn't work. How can I get my music onto my external HD?

What does this have to do with iTunes?
If the external drive is not being detected by the computer, address that issue.

  • Library won't copy to iPod

Just got my first iPod, all was going along great but when I tried to "sync" my music from iTunes to my iPod, I got an error message, "items in the iTune library were not copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play them on this computer." Only 1 of the 25 songs copied. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks so much!

    Hello,
First, check the iPod's preferences in iTunes... click on the iPod under Devices in the left-hand column. This should display the 'Summary' page (you'll see a picture of the iPod). Click on the Music tab, and make sure it is set to Sync all songs and playlists.
If the preferences are not set that way, change them so that they are, and then click Apply in the lower right-hand column. If they are already set that way, you might want to consider restoring your iPod in iTunes. This article will go over that in detail:

If the restore doesn't help, try changing the iPod drive letter, per this article:

  • Trying move iPhoto library, won't copy to new home

So I'm trying to move my iPhoto library from a newer MacBook Pro to an older Macbook, where there is more space for it, using an external hard drive.
When I try to copy the library from the hard drive to the Macbook, I get a 'not enough space' error, even though there is more than enough space on that Macbook.
From reading up in this forum I thought it might be a permissions issue. This seems to be confirmed bc now when I open iPhoto on the Macbook, I get an error saying 'Unable to write to library "iPhoto Library". Check you have permission to write to the library directory.'. (This didn't happen the first time I opened the library on the MacBook, which I did once the original copy request didn't work.)
When looking at the permissions under 'Get Info' it had my user profile on the MacBook as being able to read and write, and 'staff' and 'everyone' as read only. When I tried to change the permissions to read and write for 'everyone', I got an 'unexpected error has occured' BUT now it is showing that 'everyone' has read and write access.
I just want to have my iPhoto library (which is large, approx. 192 GB) on the MacBook and be able to use it the same way I was using it where it was before. Was I supposed to do something to the permissions before I moved the library onto the external hard drive from the MacBook Pro? Is there something I can do to get the library onto my Macbook despite the 'not enough space' error and resolve the permissions issue?
The external hard drive is formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled) and so is the MacBook's hard drive. I've tried the rebuild etc feature in iPhoto but it won't work because iPhoto says I don't have permission. I've also tried deleting the iPhotolock.data file as suggested in some similar questions in this community, but that didn't help, and tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but that doesn't work because it can't open the iPhoto library due to the permissions error.
I've backed up both machines (2013 MacBook Pro which was the iPhoto library's original home, and an older MacBook (circa 2009) to which I'm trying to move the library) using Time Machine so they reflect the machines prior to moving the iPhoto library off the MacBook Pro). Both are running Mavericks and iPhoto 11.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Iphoto library won't open since external drive unplugged by mistake

    Hi,
my photos are on an external drive, I had iphoto open on my laptop and my husband unplugged the hard drive - he didn't realise.
now when I open the library it is registering no photos, even though the file is 10gb.
is there any way that I can access the photos?
my backups have been waylaid in a house move so currently if I lose this then I've lost all my photos......
    thanks for your help

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it again at the Library on the external. If iPhoto sees a valid library there it will open it.
If it doesn't see one then you have a damaged database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto Library won't copy

    HI
i have my iPhoto Library and all my photos on an external Passport drive and iPhtoo is working fine. However, I want to move to a wireless drI've with more space.
I am trying to move my iPhoto Library back to my MacBook Pro but each time I try to move it, it says that the file already exists in the folder that I'm moving it to. It doesn't exist there so I cant figure this out. It takes about 2 hours each time and when it gets to about 10 minutes left, it throws the error

DOn't put an iPhoto Library on a wireless connection. If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
When you get copying issues like this a useful workaround is to use an app to "back up" the library to the new location, as this will usually deal with the issues for you. The best I've used for the job is chronosync.

  • Files won't copy to external hard drive

I've never had this problem in 20+ years of Mac use.
I have an external 4TB hard drive, which is coming on 80% full.  Sill have about 800 gigs left to go.
I have a DVD with about a dozen old TV shows in AVI format on it.  No copy protection or anything unusual, just plain normal AVIs.
I highlight the content and drag to move the AVIs over to the hard drive.
All the files copy, but just as it's finishing a few of them disappear again.  I try to click and drag just the individual rogue files ... they copy nicely ... then disappear again just as the copying finishes.
Just at random, I created another empty folder withint the target folder on the external drive and dragged the files to the newest folder.  Suddenly it works!
This is unnerving, having some files copy but not others ... and then they DO copy when I create another random folder to put them in.
I just noticed that the external hard drive is Windows NT File System formatted ... which I did not think to reformat to Mac before moving 3TB of data over to it.  I've read that Windows NTFS is buggy with invisible files and files that won't delete and problems like that.
I have another new 4TB drive which I have not used yet.  If I format that one to Mac extended journalled, and then move the 3+TB of data folders over, will I just be importing the same problem with the data?  Or will the transfer to a Mac formatted drive suddenly cure the problem?
    -JOHN

What happens when you try?  Do you get a message?  If so what is it exactly?
How is the external hard drive formatted? Control (right) - click on the drive's icon and select Get Info from the contextual menu.  In the Info window will be the formatting information.

  • ITunes library won't copy to 2nd iPod within household -randomly selects

Hi, we have invested in a 2nd iPod. I have a 160gb classic and my husband now has a 80gb classic. I'm trying to copy all of the iTunes library over to his new iPod but out of 6k songs its randomly selecting 1013. We thought it was the new iPod so took it back to the shop but the replacement version is taking exactly the same details as before.
As far as I can see there is MORE than enough space to take the files so don't think this is the problem.
Now I have to admit that I am a bit of a techno idiot so would appreciate any/all replies to be step by step and idiot proof.
    Thanks in advance

  • How do I copy an iPhoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive?

I'm running out of space on my external hard drive, so I was advised to buy one with triple the amount of space.  So, I need to copy my current iphoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive.  I thought I could just drag and drop it in, but that doesn't seem to be working.

Make sure the external drive is formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and then drag the iPhoto Library to that drive using the Finder.
Then double click the library in its new location to open it in iPhoto. Test it thoroughly, if it is working, before deleting the original library on the internal drive.
To check the format of the drive, see (it says Aperture, but the same applies to iPhoto):  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

  • HT1386 iPhone won't sync with iTunes. It says iTunes can not add songs to iPhone because no songs in iTunes library can be copied to iPhone. Help!!!! What should I do

iPhone won't sync with iTunes and It says iTunes can not add songs to iPhone because no songs in iTunes library can be copied to iPhone. Help!!!! What should I do. I tried everything!
I need to add my music to my iPhone from iTunes but its not working!

First off try and go into your IPhone manually through My Computer and cut photos or anything you can through the device to be able to free space up so that you can continue to do what you want to do with ITunes. This way you will be able to create a backup or do what you have to do to manage your information, photos and texts on your device a little better.

  • Itunes won't copy over some of my podcasts and purchases since I have moved it to an external hardrive

So I Have moved over all my purchases and everything to an external hardrive. I did everything right and my itunes story works perfectly fine. However one of my podcasts (yugioh the abridged series) won't copy over along to the ipod saying its file type is not supported by the ipod. It only does this with the first 8 episodes (if you find it you will see them) one of which (the bbt movie) worked perfectly fine on my ipod before but now for some reason it won't. It also won't work on a few of the tv shows that are in hd and one music album that had american boy in it. I'm wondering what I can do to solve this problem. My itunes and my computer (windows vista operating system) is up to date and I have an ipod classic with plenty of room what should I do.

This doesn't work. The iOS4 upgrade has wiped out synchronization to Outlook to the phone and back. There are many threads on this here, and Apple has yet to address this issue.

  • Itunes won't allow me to add music to library.  Itunes designated to external drive.

I have an external drive connected to my mac mini.  My itunes library is designated to the external drive insted of my internal drive to save space.  When I try to add music to my itunes library it gives me an error stating I do not have permission.  How do I work around this?

    How exactly did you designate?
When did this happen?  From the minute you designated or some time afterward?
The correct answer lies in knowing details not yet provided.  Until then:

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • OSX 10.9.5 won't recognize an external hardrive

I got a new Macbook Air running 10.9.5 that simply won't recognize my external hard drive.... I even tried formatting it with another Macbook Pro not running the latest OSX version. And another device (Smart TV) also recognizes the hard drive so I don't think that's the issue. I also opened disc utility to check whether it would be visible but it's not appearing there either...
    Help please!

Thank you so much!!! This worked for me. I went file>new>library. Then I created a new project in that library, went back to the project in the old library that wouldn't export, I highlighted all of the clips in the timeline and hit cmd-c (copy), then headed back to my new project in new library and pasted the clips there. Then when I hit Share Master File it actually worked! The window popped up as usual and I was able to export. Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you!
